Democratic convention, night four: Eschaton to be immanentized in Denver

We’re fully three hours away from Zeus’s descent from Olympus, but the festivities at the temple have begun so here’s your thread to snark. The schedule’s thin until 8:30 p.m. ET or so, when Gore the Baptist comes forth to herald the arrival of The One. Hotline has a few unexceptional excerpts from an advance copy of the speech and the AP has a bit more. Surely this will be the first time in history that a classical Greek setting serves as backdrop for a catchphrase based on the title of an old sitcom.

I doubt I’ll watch, but video will be here later. In the meantime, two quotes for you to meditate on. Number one: “Here we were eating lunch, and it was like the clouds parted and the sun was shining in.” And number two: “At the CNN bar, where the voice of Wolf Blitzer just said everyone will remember where they were when Obama made his speech.” Exit question: A Stonehenge set would have been awesome, wouldn’t it?

Update: Here’s something meatier to chew on. Is there going to be a convention in Minneapolis next week?

Update: The gauntlet is tossed in the comments. Was “Eight Is Enough” a sitcom — or a dramedy? Let the debate rage!

Update: Here’s the transcript of Obama’s speech. Money line from the nominee of the party that’s trumpeted every last setback and downplayed every last gain in Iraq for the past three years: “I’ve got news for you, John McCain. We all put our country first.” That makes twice now during a momentous speech that he’s rewritten his own side’s history. See his 2004 convention keynote, arguing that “there is not a Black America and a White America and Latino America and Asian America” to a party sick to its core with identity politics, for the other.

CK,
I hope you are right.

Texan,

Obama is Omnipresent. Did you forget?

kyarnes on August 29, 2008 at 12:41 AM

Chris Matthews to Rev Jesse: “Can we break through the color bar?”

So if he loses, we are still a racist country. Pathetic

.

But here’s the bigger picture: If Obama wins, then watch the MSM prop him up like no other president before him; because it would be a setback for civil rights if the 1st black president proved to be a miserable failure.

how sad is it that I’d rather here Greta talking about “missing girl of the week”, than this crap still?

RightWinged on August 29, 2008 at 12:42 AM

Obama’s “follow Bin Laden to the cave in which he lives” to “get” him remark impresses Olby and Maddow as tough stuff rebuking Bush and Cheny.

So, Obama knows the exact location of Bin Laden? Care to share that, Barry? Been in contact, have you?

Texan on August 29, 2008 at 12:38 AM

He’s in Pakistan .. and Obama has no clue as to the complications associated with invading an ‘ally’ who’s sitting on nukes.

He also said that he wouldn’t let him go once in the crosshairs. I’m wondering if he knows that Bill Clinton did just that … if he does, he’s taken a real shot at the old idiot, and if he doesn’t .. well .. he’s a young idiot.

cgoode777 on August 29, 2008 at 12:42 AM

Keep up those NRA memberships – Since Heller, the other side is fired up! The One is a huge gun grabber and if he get elected they will try to drag the nation the way of the UK, Australia and the UN.

How many more on these one liners do we need to get to 3000? I am in CA and the night is young.

I will help the thread count. I didn’t see a minute of the speech, but Fox just showed a clip of Barry entering the stage. Biden looked unimpressed. I am glad someone thought to put American flags on the stage.

How many of the 70,000 are undergoing “post-coitus” depression right about now?

Mallard T. Drake on August 29, 2008 at 12:46 AM

That’s why Bill got so enraged at ABC for airing that mini-series showing how he had Osama in his crosshairs.

Seven Percent Solution on August 29, 2008 at 12:46 AM

I’m leaving it to you Mountain and West Coasters…it’s quarter to midnight and I have a job to go to in the morning. Oh no! Obama sez I don’t and I’m miserable! Guess I’ll just have to sneak in quietly and try not to get noticed.

TexasJew on August 29, 2008 at 12:50 AM

Did Barry carry on about how bad the economy is? On the day they released the 2nd quarter numbers and 3.3% growth. Still haven’t a recession yet.

BTW, Mrs. Biden is pretty good looking. They just showed her on Fox.

Mallard T. Drake on August 29, 2008 at 12:50 AM

I wrote the following back on March 1st and I still agree with myself.

Senator Obama is the likely Democratic nominee, and his siren song continues to captivate many Americans. Hillary has been unable to attack the Barack machine effectively, and his campaign battalion is eager to equate valid scrutiny with dirty politics or bigotry, an ad hominem tactic that boils down to shameful squid ink. The Senator is promising lofty ideals that he as a human being is incapable of delivering and there are plenty of “change” pitfalls to expose before the general election. Examine Senator Obama’s record and realize that not only are his promises empty, they are dangerous.

The best way to combat the Obama cult frenzy is to calmly show your friends and neighbors who the man really is, a charming down-the-line Liberal Democrat who in actuality is just a shiny radical iteration of what he is condemning. Americans should not be looking up to a solitary human being to cure the types of ills that Senator Obama preaches about, bottom line. The very fact that his flock is so dreamy-eyed raises serious questions about their emotion:logic ratio and suggests a greedy euphoria over the prospect of blaming personal failures and low self-esteem on a previous governmental administration.

The amount of freedom and opportunity we ALL have in our laps right this second is remarkable, and to act as if we are fundamentally a broken, soulless impoverished populace is disrespectful to our Creator and so many people of the world who do not have things anywhere near as good as we do. Supporting big government socialism, victimization mentality, class warfare and open borders is not the answer. Instead, implement and advocate personal responsibility, self-reflection, diligent budgeting, hard work and watch your need for a Barack Obama figure fade right away.

o/t but this reminds me of a point Drudge made a couple years ago when Meet the Fockers opened and Barbara Streisand (one of the stars) was complaining on her blog about the economy collapsing (while it was booming, btw), and a point I made when the new Batman movie shattered all records. If everything is as terrible as we’re told by the media and the Dems, how the hell can people be shelling out $10 for a movie (plus overpriced snacks) to a point where we’re breaking records? I’ll add to that – how could all of The Messiah’s followers spend the money to travel and see him in Denver?

I talked with an office colleague today. She is agog over Barry. I asked her if infanticide was a family value. She had no idea about Barry’s voting record in the Illinois Senate on the born alive bills. When I explained it to her, there was a little glimmer of disappointment. But then she said there had to be more to the story than that. I assured her that there wasn’t and Barry was lying to cover his record. Hopefully, a seed of discontent with “The One” has been planted, and she will start to reconsider her support.

Mallard T. Drake on August 29, 2008 at 12:54 AM

How does Keith Olbermann view pre-Obama America? Apparently akin to the Soviet Union, and South Africa under apartheid. Here was his statement from the top of tonight’s DNC coverage.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: It is an iconic night in history: we’ll all remember this night as long as we live. This is the night that the first Western government, the first Western political power, or party, has nominated an African-American, someone of African heritage, to lead the country. It’s something that took a long time to happen, almost like an old Polaroid film developing. But here it is. It happened officially last night, and tonight it is crowned, this achievement. And it’s going to happen at a football field.

KEITH OLBERMANN: And it happens as suddenly in some respects as the Soviet Union crumbled or apartheid was beaten in South Africa. These seemingly invincible hurdles that could never be overcome and within a short period in our historical timespan, suddenly they’re gone. And almost nobody saw it coming. Certainly no one at all saw it coming more than four years ago.

And if they are … when Obama kills their employers with his hideous tax schemes, why shouldn’t their bosses just can the stupid bastards and give them the “change” they deserve and even seem to crave?

cgoode777 on August 29, 2008 at 12:53 AM

Well, if you know the page it’s on, you can do a “ctrl+f” and then type a word or phrase you know was contained in the comment.

Otherwise, if it’s old enough to be listed in the search engines (which happens in hours on a popular site like this) you can search a word (or “phrase with quotes”) and hotair on Yahoo! or Google.

Or did you actually mean posts by Allah or Ed… rather than comments? I see you said “posts”, but I was assuming you meant comments.

I just did 2 cans of Mt. Dew. I can stick around.

I can’t believe BO said AK47. Thats the same crap that J Jackson was pushing back in 93.

An AK47 is a Full-Auto Assault Rifle (not an assault weapon).

The 1994 AWB had nothing to do with full-auto guns. (only semi-auto)

I convinced that all the popular support for the AWB is base on this “bait and switch” because people thought that it was a ban on machine guns like the ones they see in the movies.

The HA posting monster ate up a post of mine about Luckenbach before, by the way…

With the Senate, Congress and the Presidency firmly in their hands, and with their leftwing in ascendency, these will be some very dark days for this country.

These stupid Obamaite college kids are brainwashed and largely unemployable. Wait until the economy tanks from all the taxes, carbon credits and other burdens on business.
The little bastards will really feel some pain..

TexasJew on August 29, 2008 at 1:05 AM

:-) Haven’t seen much of him in the last week or two. Saw mixed reviews of his book; don’t know if it’s selling as much as anticipated.

Last I heard it was a bestseller. Think it’s doing well.

I read it .. damaging stuff in there. You’ll never be able to listen to Obama talk about his past without getting nauseous again.

He’s been called kooky .. had his feet held to the flame over some off-the-wall comments .. but I saw him interviewed, and he did a very credible job of explaining himself and setting the record straight on the 9/11 ‘truther’ stuff and some other things.

Long post short — good book, well-written, impeccably sourced, and very eye-opening .. if you can get through it without getting so mad you pass out.

That is some reporting! Isn’t there a big Air Force base in Dayton? I dated a girl years ago whose dad was the top general there…

TexasJew on August 29, 2008 at 1:11 AM

And that’s what makes the McCain “Congratulations” ad prior to Obama’s acceptance speech all the more effective:

Think of it as two competitors in a tournament completing their semi-final match and advancing to the finals. They both step up to the podium for the announcement of the tournament final match-up. McCain extends his hand and says “May the best man win.” to which Obama’s reply is a punch in the teeth.

Makes Obama look like a jerk and poor sport. It may also be just the burr to force Team Barry to make a mistake on the day of McCain’s acceptance speech, like say, airing one of the Dems pattened “can’t miss-this’ll kill ‘em-oh crap, the folks hated it-made us look petty” attack ads.

Well played, Johnny. Well played.

BTW, based on your experience with your secretary, I trust you enjoyed Hannity (who isn’t always that quick or bright) wasting the Dems in a couple of Luntz’s focus groups by asking them to name an accomplishment. I think the best answer he got was that he’s black.

TexasJew on August 29, 2008 at 1:16 AM

Haha… Really I was just sort of on a George Strait kick for a bit earlier, as I had to look up a song I’ve been hearing on the radio. I’m not a big one for “message” in a song, I just like the way things sound or I don’t, and I dig the sound of this song (in addition to a lot of George Strait stuff, which I have):

Apologies to TXJew – Keep looking for the wonder resource.

I had to take a relief break and put the recovering puppy to bed for the night.

BTW, we can all blame Barry for the health crisis in the country, as I couldn’t maintain my smoking quit after listening to 15 minutes of his speech tonight.

Speaking of evil oil – Did everyone see the History Chan’s Modern Marvels on oil? Surely something we must “get off of” in our lifetime!

We’ll know tomorrow.

Only Fred could make my leg tingle.

They taught us in law school that a voting booth I.Q. requirement would be unconstitutional.

There’s gotta’ be some way around that.

cgoode777 on August 29, 2008 at 1:13 AM

That’s true!
I knew someone who had two profoundly retarded cousins who loved to vote, and who never missed an opportunity.
It was like going to the circus..
They lived outside of Chicago, by the way, in Highland Park.
I’ll leave it at that…

A THESAURUS FOR LIBERAL CODE SPEAK

“Equal pay for equal work” = Government Bureaucracy sets wages rather than a free labor market.

“Card Check” = Working men and women lose their right to a secret ballot and intimidating thugs can intimidate anyone who doesn’t buy in to the line big labor is pushing down their throat.

“I will not pay for missile defense systems that do not work” = I will make sure no missile defense system is deployed regardless of external threat

“Tax cuts for 95% of the people” = Since I am proposing to increase spending by 600 billion annually for the other programs I’ve proposed, and we already have a 500 billion dollar a year projected deficit and my middle class tax cut will cost 150 billion dollars; the top 5% will have to pay an extra 1.25 trillion dollars a year in order for me not to raise taxes on anyone below the top 5%. And who would work or invest if they have to pay the tax rate to cover the 40% of taxes the top 5% already pay plus another 1.25 trillion? HA HA GUESS I WILL HAVE TO TAX ALL YOU MIDDLE CLASS FOLK JUST LIKE BILL CLINTON DID.

“No tax breaks for businesses that move jobs abroad” = We’ve set business tax rates so much higher than the rest of the world, the only way a business can get new investment and survive is if we give them a break; so if you do not do what I Obama want, I will take away any breaks, you will suffer the full tax rate and my buddies that do what I tell them will put you out of business. HA HA

New chapters later but bedtime calls.

Considering the Left’s view of America, why aren’t there boat loads of em moving to Europe where life is apparently idyllic?

InTheBellyoftheBeast on August 29, 2008 at 12:58 AM

What, and desert the suffering masses left behind? What kind of true blue Americans would they be?

No, their self-appointed life mission is apparently too sacred for that. They won’t rest until they’ve brought Marxism to every American hamlet, alley and street corner. Why should America be deprived of The Best the World Community Has to Offer?

Ah, ambition…

InTheBellyoftheBeast on August 29, 2008 at 1:20 AM

I have the old 1995 Modern Marvel show on oil downloaded.
It has one of the great legends of geologist oilmen, Michel Halbouty from Houston (who died a couple of years ago at 95, still working every day – he was born right near Spindletop in Beaumont, just a couple of years after it came in at over 100,000 barrels of oil per day).
He exuded such excitement about smelling the oil in a core pulled out of a well, “just sticking your face up to it and smaelling that oil”, that I bought it to show my 8 year-old daughter.
Like Halbouty said “there’s nothing like it, nothing in the world!”

OK, one more

I will be forcing my eighth graders to watch the new one. They all come from uberlib parents and need to discover the wonder that is crude oil. I am thinking the follow up assignment will be to imagine a day without oil and derivative products.

And yes, there is nothing like it….

THEME OF THE RNC: VICTORY!!

As declared by Senator Obama on this most historical night of nights, on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s speech, “I have a dream,” it is with great pleasure that he concedes that the Iraqi government is in agreement with the Commander in Chief and the Military Leadership to start withdrawing combat troops from Iraq!! They are READY!!

Congratulations to all the men and women in uniform who sacrificed so dearly, thank you for WINNING THIS WAR! We are so proud of you all, and when we get you safely back home, we’re going to make sure your sacrifices and honor are never forgotten, and never mistreated!! USA! USA! USA!

Congratulations to our American Olympians!!! To all of you who dedicated yourself to endless hours of training and sacrifice! Thank you for representing the best of American Values and Sportsmanship to win 38 GOLD medals, and 110 TOTAL Olympic medals!!! USA!! USA!! USA!!

Thank you to all the Sam’s Club Republicans!! It is your grassroots efforts that have led us all the way here to Minneapolis to nominate a true American Hero, a post-partisan candidate who will bridge the divide between stalemate parties to make America greater, stronger, greener and SAFER!!!

Here he is, our next President, John McCain!!!!! USA! USA! USA!

Single Chicago attorney, 36, seeks Palin look-a-like for dating, marriage, children. Please respond with photo, copy of voter registration card.

Must share views on voting booth I.Q. requirements.

Only 810 more to go to reach 3000. I think it will require some early morning east coasters to complete this.

It’s good to have a goal. If I was a democrat, I’d apply for thread assistance so that I wouldn’t have to keep posting.
