Democratic convention, night four: Eschaton to be immanentized in Denver

posted at 7:05 pm on August 28, 2008 by Allahpundit

We’re fully three hours away from Zeus’s descent from Olympus, but the festivities at the temple have begun so here’s your thread to snark. The schedule’s thin until 8:30 p.m. ET or so, when Gore the Baptist comes forth to herald the arrival of The One. Hotline has a few unexceptional excerpts from an advance copy of the speech and the AP has a bit more. Surely this will be the first time in history that a classical Greek setting serves as backdrop for a catchphrase based on the title of an old sitcom.

I doubt I’ll watch, but video will be here later. In the meantime, two quotes for you to meditate on. Number one: “Here we were eating lunch, and it was like the clouds parted and the sun was shining in.” And number two: “At the CNN bar, where the voice of Wolf Blitzer just said everyone will remember where they were when Obama made his speech.” Exit question: A Stonehenge set would have been awesome, wouldn’t it?

Update: Here’s something meatier to chew on. Is there going to be a convention in Minneapolis next week?

Update: The gauntlet is tossed in the comments. Was “Eight Is Enough” a sitcom — or a dramedy? Let the debate rage!

Update: Here’s the transcript of Obama’s speech. Money line from the nominee of the party that’s trumpeted every last setback and downplayed every last gain in Iraq for the past three years: “I’ve got news for you, John McCain. We all put our country first.” That makes twice now during a momentous speech that he’s rewritten his own side’s history. See his 2004 convention keynote, arguing that “there is not a Black America and a White America and Latino America and Asian America” to a party sick to its core with identity politics, for the other.

All kinds of plagiarism going on-now Olby stealing lines of Cartman of South Park.
Olberman was just heard to say when he thought the mike was off- “Ew-Chris Matthews spooge!”

I was thinking along the same lines…. i’d like to hear a quote/paraphrase from one of the people who liked it, what it being such a great speech and all.

All I remember is the “ENOUGH”, because it was only like 2mins in and my thought was “Funny you should say that, I was just thinking the same thing!”

The Fox crew is absolutely pathetic in their attempt to whore themselves for the big man Bill O’reilly. The desperation to woo The Messiah to appear on the factor has become an excersie in prostitution. Bill is the FNC Olberdouche.

Yes, she’s 18. Shawn Johnson is 16, and Alicia Sacramone is 20.

ReubenJCogburn on August 29, 2008 at 12:06 AM

OK. I feel better. Was that really Shawn at the convention? I don’t get athletes as liberals. It seems, of all people, that they would identify with the personal sacrifice, hard work, and individualism of conservatives. Oh well, I think Shawn’s a nice little hobbit. I was a liberal when I was her age too. There’s still er…hope that she will umm…change.

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

That’s funny… I know why he chose those words (look to the future) But that scripture is meaningless in the context of that speech.

you want a quote that’s meaningful in context?

That JPod link is devastating. “Dreadful” speech, indeed.

What bothers me the most, though, is that this will be historically embarassing. So little for such an historic occasion.

People who have 250,001 pay the same taxes on their first 250,000. The extra 1 dollar is taxed progressively higher.

freevillage on August 28, 2008 at 11:57 PM

The discussion was about capital gains taxes. If you realize capital gains and the capital gains tax rate is twice as much if you earn more than $250,000 then you are better off earning less than the $250,000 threshold.

We’ll all have to wait & see whether the American People, whoever the hell they are, are swayed by this speech and/or by the media swooning.

If they are, there will be a lot of disappointed folks out there four years hence. Maybe enough, even, to decide not to allow Ted Stevens to run again.

If they are not, then it’s Maverick time.

Okay, you’ve noticed. This post has nothing original to say. That’s because, you dolt, I’m simply trying to help us all make this, in the words of one early poster, the longest post evah.

Yes… Nastia and Alicia can both be ogled at… I’m not sure who told Shawn it was a good idea to be political, but that was really stupid. She probably lost lots of potential fans in the red states… Really dumb. Who the hell is that girls agent??

BTW, I do know that Bela and Marta Karolyi vote Republican and I wouldn’t surprise me if Mama and Papa Liukin do the same. Not sure about Alicia… but girl had a bad Olympics and is probably in desperate need of some hook-ups.

Ah, well, we’ve all been dealing with abysmal historical embarrassment ever since BO first sent a thrill up Matthews’ leg.

If you think of this campaign as kind of a mistake – BO wasn’t supposed to be propelled forward this quickly – then you can look, hopefully, to this speech as the climax. In other words, we’ve all indulged just enough in affirmative action to frighten ourselves, made it clear that we really are ready to bend over backwards to give a person of color a chance he doesn’t deserve. The ugly ending will reveal what’s wrong with that way of thinking – an object lesson. I want to believe that’s what BO really meant when he shouted “ENOUGH!” It’ll be inexpressibly sad if instead we have to experience the object lesson in the form of an actual BO presidency.

I live in Chicago.

As an attorney, and a Chicago resident, and someone who’s always thought the Chicago gun ban was about the most unconstitutional law on the books, I watched the D.C. case go up to the Supreme Court with much interest.

Lo and behold, they struck down an identical ban in D.C. as unconstitutional.

Does that mean I can go get a gun?

Nope.

Daley says that the ruling does not apply to us here in Illinois, because D.C. is a district, and not a state.

Guy just makes it up as he goes along.

A couple of years ago, I listened to Ted Kennedy go on and on about how horrible the NRA is, and I immediately went right online and got a Lifetime NRA Membership.
He sold me!

TexasJew on August 29, 2008 at 12:31 AM

I am not a lifetime member, but I do keep my membership each year.

eski502 and Cardiganfox:
Sarah Palin would be great.
Shawn may have been there for the concert.
Krauthammer may be reading a telepromter.
The speech was self centered.

Cantor is on Larry King. He is great.

Obama’s “follow Bin Laden to the cave in which he lives” to “get” him remark impresses Olby and Maddow as tough stuff rebuking Bush and Cheny.

So, Obama knows the exact location of Bin Laden? Care to share that, Barry? Been in contact, have you?

A compilation of pictures from the speech, illustrate the angry Barack Obama acceptance speech.

Actually, it was that expat New Yorker, Austin’s Jerry Jeff Walker, who put Luckenbach on the map, back in 1973. He recorded an album there (the town was owned by Hondo Crouch) and Ann Richards – an unknown local county commissioner back then – was in the audience, drunk as a coot.

I heard George Strait in a rock cover band down in San Marcos, years before he got famous, by the way. Great singer!

I don’t know what this has to do with Obama, but I’m sick of hearing about that worthless little lying bastard.

cgoode777, I live in Cook just a squeak outside the city limits the south side. Just remember what Obama brings to our table:

- Ban all handguns
- Ban all semi-autos
- Federal CCW ban
- Ban all gun shops within 5 miles of any school or park
- Local bans OK
- One gun purchase per month (direct assault on shows)
- Ban all “assault weapons”
- Piece by piece bans on magazines, cartridges
- Ban “armor piercing” ammunition (direct assault on scoped rifles)
- Trigger locks

And guns are not even on my top 5 of issues to vote on. Wake up, sheeple.

MarcusBrody on August 29, 2008 at 12:39 AM

Oh wow, anyone watching Larry King Live? Larry has Republicans like Ben Stein on to respond to the Obama speech. Usually King just asks questions and doesn’t get into arguments but now he’s giving rebuttals trying to defend Obama and the Democrats. This is the most combative I’ve ever seen him. He’s also repeatably saying he’s an independent!

haha….

I heard that. My old roommate (I had when living in Nashville) is down there in Dallas now… actually, some little place called Springtown I think. Only been in the Houston airport myself.
