Democratic convention, night four: Eschaton to be immanentized in Denver

posted at 7:05 pm on August 28, 2008 by Allahpundit

We’re fully three hours away from Zeus’s descent from Olympus, but the festivities at the temple have begun so here’s your thread to snark. The schedule’s thin until 8:30 p.m. ET or so, when Gore the Baptist comes forth to herald the arrival of The One. Hotline has a few unexceptional excerpts from an advance copy of the speech and the AP has a bit more. Surely this will be the first time in history that a classical Greek setting serves as backdrop for a catchphrase based on the title of an old sitcom.

I doubt I’ll watch, but video will be here later. In the meantime, two quotes for you to meditate on. Number one: “Here we were eating lunch, and it was like the clouds parted and the sun was shining in.” And number two: “At the CNN bar, where the voice of Wolf Blitzer just said everyone will remember where they were when Obama made his speech.” Exit question: A Stonehenge set would have been awesome, wouldn’t it?

Update: Here’s something meatier to chew on. Is there going to be a convention in Minneapolis next week?

Update: The gauntlet is tossed in the comments. Was “Eight Is Enough” a sitcom — or a dramedy? Let the debate rage!

Update: Here’s the transcript of Obama’s speech. Money line from the nominee of the party that’s trumpeted every last setback and downplayed every last gain in Iraq for the past three years: “I’ve got news for you, John McCain. We all put our country first.” That makes twice now during a momentous speech that he’s rewritten his own side’s history. See his 2004 convention keynote, arguing that “there is not a Black America and a White America and Latino America and Asian America” to a party sick to its core with identity politics, for the other.

Yes. You can go to any Bush rally. There’ll be only pre-screened people there.

fossten on August 28, 2008 at 11:55 PM

Shoot – I’d hate to see a thread go to 2000 without me.

Very divided response from pundits. Odd that people like Kristol and Krauthammer seemed impressed, while others on the sane side of MSNBC, thought it verged on suicidal politically.

CK MacLeod on August 28, 2008 at 11:55 PM

Freevillage,
I used to help organize Bush rallies. The only screening we did was to make sure no one was carrying a gun.

Pat Buchannon is saying on MSNBC that is was the greatest speach he ever witnessed. wtf

pappy on August 28, 2008 at 11:56 PM

What?

He’s 14, for starters so, no, he hasn’t filled out a 1040 yet. The point is that a “progressive” tax punishes achievement, and he was able to figure that out using logic, common sense, and the most elementary math skills.

But hey, maybe you can tell us:

What’s the point of working harder to earn more if you end up with less at the end?

Yeah, ok, then he don’t have to understand how it works. Yo on the other hand should, and I though you would explain it to him.

Disclaimer: I’m OPPOSED to capital gains taxes. I SUPPORT flat income tax. I’m merely responding to an obviously uninformed comment made by your kid which you for some reason unknown to me are very proud of (the comment, not the kid).

People who have 250,001 pay the same taxes on their first 250,000. The extra 1 dollar is taxed progressively higher.

That Krauthammer found it to be so good threw me off, I am still trying to decipher his analysis. And not that I find it odd because liberals are incapable of making a good speech or two, but this one wasn’t all that good, he almost said what seemed to sound like drug instead of drivers (completely stopping). He then, somewhere in the speech, lost that annoying baritone voice that everyone likes so much and slipped into scrappy kid from Hawaii on his surfboard. You know the one, it sounds like hes asking a girl out for the first time, but whiny and disbelieving. So just on delivery alone it was sub par.

Jennifer Rubin summed up Rove’s reaction as follows:

Jennifer Rubin – 08.28.2008 – 11:37 PM

Karl Rove had three observations: it was old school attack politics, it invited a debate on specifics (”Okay, what programs would you cut?”) and it skated through problematic cultural issues like guns.

I think you’ll like JPod’s reaction, also at the CONTENTIONS blog:

The discussion was about capital gains taxes. If you realize capital gains and the capital gains tax rate is twice as much if you earn more than $250,000 then you are better off earning less than the $250,000 threshold.

Upon minimal analysis of tonight’s speech, it’s easy to discover that there’s nothing fresh and new about Obama and his recycled policies. When it comes down to it, he’s just the same old politician. Just because he’s young and black, it doesn’t make what he says unique.

Kinda reminds me of the newly packaged eggrolls i bought last night: New look, same flavor!

George Bush. Poor assembly line workers. Free college. George Bush. Plant closings. Free preschool. Free fish (ignore that rod and reel over there). George Bush. Debate me now (steps behind Steve Wilcos). If you can find the time, maybe think about parenting, if you can try it, perhaps. This all will cost money, I will pay for it by taxing the corporations (you know, the ones that are ravaged by the highest tax rates in the world and close plants, enabling me to use their employees in circus freak fashion to gain red state votes).

Who the hell plagarizes Calvin Coolidge? WTF? At least Deval Patrick was recent.
Guys, that’s from the Bible. “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18

Krauthammer overstated, in my opinion, what he called the “genius” of Obama further pursuing, in this speech, a strategy of reducing himself to a generic Dem in a year that Dems are supposed to win. This strategy was in fact the obvious avenue for Obama to pursue as soon as he started losing primaries to Hillary, and was already made clear in the dizzying series of flip-flops from June to July and the selection of Biden, and confirmed in the failed attempts to renew the charisma campaign amidst the success of the McCain attempts to subvert it.

Maybe the conservative pundits think they’ll look petty and small if they don’t kiss his ___. It’s the only explanation I can come up with.

Some sort of subliminal white guilt maybe? That or maybe they’re honoring the old rule of “if you can’t say something nice”…

I refuse to believe these guys honestly liked a blatant attack speech like that.

This all will cost money, I will pay for it by taxing the corporations (you know, the ones that are ravaged by the highest tax rates in the world and close plants, enabling me to use their employees in circus freak fashion to gain red state votes).

you should run for prez.

Steele’s questions resonate. How can you do all this?

BHO does not know economics, thermodynamics, strategy, or geopolitics. His bad ideas flounder on the shoals of reality.

I’m going out and getting me a H & K USC. It will be a bumpy ride to Agincourt.

Nastia is more attractive anyway.

eski502 on August 29, 2008 at 12:01 AM

I’m partial to Alicia Sacramone personally, but still, Shawn was so cute. What a shame.

fossten on August 29, 2008 at 12:02 AM

I would agree, Sacramone is the hottest of the 3… but she’s also the one who choked. I also agree that Nastia is hotter than Shawn…. and not only that, but Nastia Liukin and Alicia Sacramone are both legal.

The Fox crew is absolutely pathetic in their attempt to whore themselves for the big man Bill O’reilly. The desperation to woo The Messiah to appear on the factor has become an excersie in prostitution. Bill is the FNC Olberdouche.

Thank you!

I look to Karl often to compare and contrast my own opinion. Politically, it was awful–that’s where the “debate on specifics” especially comes in. Lots of fodder for campaign commercials and McCain’s own speech.
