Democratic convention, night four: Eschaton to be immanentized in Denver

We’re fully three hours away from Zeus’s descent from Olympus, but the festivities at the temple have begun so here’s your thread to snark. The schedule’s thin until 8:30 p.m. ET or so, when Gore the Baptist comes forth to herald the arrival of The One. Hotline has a few unexceptional excerpts from an advance copy of the speech and the AP has a bit more. Surely this will be the first time in history that a classical Greek setting serves as backdrop for a catchphrase based on the title of an old sitcom.
I doubt I’ll watch, but video will be here later. In the meantime, two quotes for you to meditate on. Number one: “Here we were eating lunch, and it was like the clouds parted and the sun was shining in.” And number two: “At the CNN bar, where the voice of Wolf Blitzer just said everyone will remember where they were when Obama made his speech.” Exit question: A Stonehenge set would have been awesome, wouldn’t it?
Update: Here’s something meatier to chew on. Is there going to be a convention in Minneapolis next week?
Update: The gauntlet is tossed in the comments. Was “Eight Is Enough” a sitcom — or a dramedy? Let the debate rage!
Update: Here’s the transcript of Obama’s speech. Money line from the nominee of the party that’s trumpeted every last setback and downplayed every last gain in Iraq for the past three years: “I’ve got news for you, John McCain. We all put our country first.” That makes twice now during a momentous speech that he’s rewritten his own side’s history. See his 2004 convention keynote, arguing that “there is not a Black America and a White America and Latino America and Asian America” to a party sick to its core with identity politics, for the other.

Guy on Fox is hawking his book now. One hour after Speech O’Splat began, they’ve already changed the subject!
RushBaby on August 28, 2008 at 11:13 PM
What is more unwatchable – the speech or the afterglow? The commentary is reaching here, they look desperate and pathetic.

trailortrash on August 28, 2008 at 11:13 PM
The speech was too long, too many words devoted to energy independence. The “American Promise” is a horrible slogan. Much of the speech was good, calls for tax cut pledge and fiscal responsibility was interesting. He did a good job at dissecting McCain. Americanizing his background was an excellent way to start it. Didn’t quite live up to the hype, crowd noise could have been louder for the TV audience, but not in an Indianapolis Colts type of way. In four hours Keith Olberman will probably have to call his doctor.

Easy to promise when America primarily buys its oil from Canada, Mexico, and Venezuela.

Kristol is a neo-conservative who is now going back to his democratic roots, apparently.

coyoterex on August 28, 2008 at 11:15 PM
To reiterate – here is Obama plagarizing the very conservative Calvin Coolidge:
That’s right – one of the most liberal guys ever to run for President plagarizes one of the most conservative Presidents in the history of the US.
As Allah would say, “Nuance.”
fiatboomer on August 28, 2008 at 11:15 PM
I’m just glad that McCain managed to hide his VP pick at least until sometime after the speech ended. Let’s be honest, we all knew it would be a well-spoken speech. That’s what Obama does.

Kristol is a weak twat. He pushed McCain on us, and has even recently pushed the amazingly stupid Lieberman VP gambit.
It’s no wonder that phony conservatives like Brooks and Kristol are on the NYT payroll.

Wow. 1500+ comments. I can hardly wait for election night when the HA server melts down into a puddle much like the one underneath Olby and Matthews right now.
A typical liberal boilerplate speech, devoid of almost any connection to reality. However, the average voter is pretty much uninformed and Obama is pretty. You never know how this will turn out. I’ve got an uneasy feeling that with the MSM proclaiming this the greatest speech in all of recorded history that it will probably end up being a net positive for The One. And that’s a bad thing for this country.
Physics Geek on August 28, 2008 at 11:16 PM
He’s just doing an O’Reilly…throwing out a contrarian reaction so he can claim he’s fair and balanced. O’Reilly does it all the time to deflect the conservative label.

Chris Wallace and Bill Kristol loved the speech.
Juan Williams and Nina Easton didn’t love the speech.
I expect to see about a 3 more point bump (6 today, per Gallup) in the polls tomorrow and it will fade over the weekend after people digest this silliness.

jimmy the notable on August 28, 2008 at 11:19 PM
Wow.
How many times did Obama just insult my intelligence in that last speech of his?
He’s a typical nanny-state liberal who – as evidenced by his comments about boot straps – thinks personal responsibility is out dated, yet preached “individual responsibility is the foundation of America.”
He talked about McCain being in Washington 26 years, yet fails to mention Biden has been there even longer.
He castigated McCain for his support of the Iraq war, yet would invade Pakistan at the drop of a hat.
He brings out the same old slogans related to businesses shipping jobs overseas – yet doesn’t understand that they wouldn’t be shipping them overseas if Democrats/liberals didn’t treat corporate America like the enemy, taxing them out the wazoo.
Did I forget anything?
Ryan Gandy on August 28, 2008 at 11:20 PM
Yep, that has nothing to do with the fact that it wasn’t a great speech.
jimmy the notable on August 28, 2008 at 11:20 PM
And what does he think he’s talking about going into Pakastain for the love of god they are a nation just like Iraq was and Bush is EVIL how??

I’m needing to see some healthy skepticism among some independent voters to calm me down and give me hope for the future. All these crying, tingling, worshipping, mindless sheep Democrats are making me want to vomit. They’re so damn emotional! It’s politics, people! You’re supposed to be using your brains and making an informed choice, not looking for your savior and crying about it every night!

This was beyond an excellent speech. I don’t care in terms of I still don’t support higher taxes and limits on trade. So he couldn’t and didn’t convert me. But the guy is an outstanding speaker, and the deliverance was magnificent.

I switched over and listened to FOX for a while and concluded that they have also become one of Obama’s shills. Are any of these so called “news” agencies capable of critically analyzing what that dolt said. People . . . he wants to tax you to death and quell the initiative of our most wealthy individuals and companies. Just keep it up media and you’ll soon have the communist state you’ve been hoping for. Sick!
