Video: Time for the daily “Olbermann antagonizes another colleague” clip

posted at 11:40 am on August 27, 2008 by Allahpundit

First Shovelgate, now this. In Kayo’s defense, I think this is less a case of him calling Matthews a bigmouth than Matthews’s sensitivity to being called a bigmouth leading him to take offense where none was intended. Note that Olby doesn’t say Chris was running off at the mouth; he says both of them were (“us”), self-deprecatingly, whereupon Matthews explodes — and not for the first time yesterday, either. Then again, Olbermann’s never been above smearing his enemies by running segments imputing unconscious intent to the otherwise innocent things they say, so let’s go ahead and return the favor by assuming that even if he didn’t know he meant to insult Matthews, he actually did mean to. Just because.

Either way, this isn’t remotely the most insulting thing he said last night. Exit question: What kind of cretin equates Democrats who work for Fox News with wartime enemy propagandists? Exit answer: The same kind of cretin who thinks Fox News is worse than Al Qaeda.

This right here is why Chrissy is a Democrat. One word: FEELINGS. These people are still children even as they slip into old age.

D0WNT0WN on August 27, 2008 at 11:47 AM

I agree. He will eventually say something to the wrong person and he will get what he deserves. It’s hard to fathom why MSNBC is not clamping down on him. Oh well, I guess it makes for good comedy.

Note that Olby doesn’t say Chris was running off at the mouth; he says both of them were (“us”), self-deprecatingly, whereupon Matthews explodes

That’s how it looked to me when watching the video. I think that when Matthews said ‘I’ll wrap it up’, that was in response to the producer in his ear telling him to quickly end his point so they could move on. It’s interesting that he got P/Oed with Keith.

…. as someone else said already, ‘must be hell on them with their terrible ratings and stocked full of d* heads.’ It’s like a pressure cooker. If the low ratings and the d* heads continue to chafe, then there will be some really awesome nastiness on MSNBC.

Epic.

jake-the-goose on August 27, 2008 at 11:50 AM

The fact that a bullying blowhard like Olbermann can rise so far in the ranks doesn’t speak well of MSNBC as an organization. What on earth is the management thinking? Is this just a tax write-off or something?

Slublog on August 27, 2008 at 11:51 AM

MSNBC has a real problem on its hand. When Chris Matthews starts snapping at Olbermann, things aren’t going well.

MSNBC has giving Olbermann too much power for short term gains. Long term his tenure at MSNBC is going to destroy the channel.

Rupert Murdoch fired Olberman because he thought he was crazy. I think the MSNBC chief should really consider wether having Olbermann on board is worth the cost. The other employees are suspicious and on edge. It’s not exactly a recipe for long term success.

coolrepublica on August 27, 2008 at 11:51 AM

I understand how they would go off on Joe, because he doesn’t follow in lockstep with them. But it’s bizarre to see Olby and Matthews get into their little lover’s spat like this. Who knows. Maybe Olbermann likes to joke with Matthews’ ‘thrill up my leg’ comment off air and it’s beginning to show. But then again, I’ve learned to never attribute a complicated explanation to something that can easily be explained by the petty and unprofessional behaviors of these two worthless mouthpieces for the democrats.

I know that everyone here hates KO — but you all have to understand that he is a ratings powerhouse at MSNBC. Whether or not the management likes what he says/does is irrelevant because he sells advertiser time.

After all gang, it’s not about the politics or the prose — it’s about the money. Apparently, Keith appeals to an audience that will buy the same crap that Fox and CNN viewers will buy.

It’s the inevitable hangover from the Kool-Aid binge. After the sugar’s gone, the bully starts pinching and kicking the littler kids. Then the squalling for mommy begins. In the real world, the grown-ups come in and cooler heads prevail. The scary thing is, at this party the biggest bully is in charge. It’s gonna get real ugly. And it’s gonna be fun as hell to watch.

I think Olby is wearing VERY thin on his comrades. He already ran one of them out on a rail, the rest can’t be feeling too comfortable either, and when he went off the other day with the “shovel” comment it seemed to really piss Matthews off. You can see it in the body language that Olby’s co-hosts seem to have had enough.

I’m surprised at how pretty much everyone at the NBC-MSBNC conglomerate gets awfully bad along with each other. Scarborough hates Olbermann and Shuster. Olbermann hates Scarborough back. Matthews envies and therefore hates Olbermann, much as he envied poor Tim Russert, may he RIP. What a mess. Very unprofessional, even beyond the bias issue. Does make for fun clips though

I think there is a wrong perception about Fox.
Remember Bush’s DUI during 2000 election? Well, Fox chose to reveal it (refusing to delay 15 minutes Bushies asked) even after AP & ABC dissed the story at first.

Now, Fox’s James Rosen seems to have the tape of Bill Ayers, Fox is NOT releasing yet while refusing to air the Ad criticizing Obama’s association with him. Looks strange to me.

pilamaye on August 27, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Olby seems to have great sway over the talking heads at MSNBC. One minute Matthews is Walter Mitty-ing himself into believing he can dethrone Arlen Specter and the next he is faced with the reality that if he falls into disfavor with Olby he could be tossed from MSNBC.

Olby’s sway — btw — is because GE is giddy with excitement that they actually have a tool on the payroll with no shame or integrity. He will do anything they say, to include being a whore for the Democrat party.

I’m sorry but Olbermann is an absolute embarrassment to “political commentary.” And I’m not saying this because he’s a leftist. There are people who are respectable political analysts on the left, that’s not the problem. However, Keith has no credibility. He told Scott McClellan his book is a “primary document in history”! What an absolute joke. The man is an emotional reactionary and has no business that requires critical thinking.

Independent Conservative on August 27, 2008 at 12:46 PM

And now I feel compelled to talk about the Who, or Roxy Music or anything but the topic at hand.

Obviously the Who are by far the more important band with regards to music history. Part of this is due to the fact that (much like the Beatles) the Who’s music was driven by two highly creative minds, Roger Daltry and Pete Townshend.

Townshend (in my view) gets too much credit sometimes, but the fact is his musical vision dominated two of their three most important contributions to Rock ‘n’ Roll: “Tommy” and “Quadrophenia.”

Outside of those themed albums, The Who were a heavily “singles” band, cranking out plenty of top 10 hits (in the UK if not always in the US). Daltry’s flexibility was critical for this music. And as he has pointed out himself, even Townshend’s music sounds best when Daltry does the singing.

The Who rose to fame in the United Kingdom with a pioneering instrument destruction stage show, as well as a series of top ten hit singles (including the celebrated “My Generation”) and top five albums, beginning in 1965 with “I Can’t Explain”. They first hit the top ten in the USA in 1967 with “I Can See for Miles”. The 1969 release of Tommy was the first in a series of top five albums for the group in the USA, followed by Live at Leeds (1970), Who’s Next (1971), Quadrophenia (1973), and Who Are You (1978) among others. — quoting Wikipedia.

I’ll save part 2-6 on the Who before starting on Roxy, assuming we keep seeing posts on this particular topic.

I actually used to respect Matthews as a journalist. I know he’s a big lib, but his enthusiasm for politics was always infectious.

Now, however, I can’t stand to see his face, much less hear his voice. Why? Because he willingly sits there next to Olby and lets his own reputation go down the toilet. If Matthews had 1/10 the integrity I once thought he had, he’d protest Olby’s place at MSNBC and stage a walkout. He’s smart enough to find another job (CNN, FOX, ABC…), but he’s apparently NOT smart enough to recognize that his reputation has been forever stained by the taint of Olby’s own rectal droppings.

MSNBC has giving Olbermann too much power for short term gains. Long term his tenure at MSNBC is going to destroy the channel.

coolrepublica on August 27, 2008 at 11:51 AM

That’s exactly right. They are getting short term (albeit still third place overall) gains from Olbermann. But in the long run they are absolutely destroying their credibility, not only with conservatives but with Clinton-Dems. And the irony is that it’s Olbermann who despises O’Reilly for his partisanship and Fox for their lack of being fair and balanced, but MSNBC is doing that exact same thing on the liberal side twice as intensely. It’s been like that on the channel now for quite some time, but this convention coverage – and I use the term “coverage” lightly – has taken it to whole new extremes, the way that Olbermann (the anchor, not the commentator) has slobbered all over himself with Obama-partisanship and sychophantism.

terryannonline on August 27, 2008 at 12:32 PM

I’m with you on Olbermann being an embarrassment to political commentary, and a complete lightweight. And “emotional reactionary” is a perfect description.

But I’ve seen very few journalists capable of even reasonable thought, much less critical thinking. So the contrast between Olbermann and others is not as sharp as it should be.

Basically, he’s an airhead among airheads. The only way he can hold up his end of an argument is to control the microphone. And then I wouldn’t count on it.

Wasn’t he the other idiot with Matthews that attacked Michelle Malkin over the “Swift Boat Vets” ads? They agreed she was “self-loathing” since she had defended to a degree the Japanese internment of World War 2, but was herself “Asian.” The boy geniuses didn’t seem to realize that Michelle Malkin was from the Philippines, which was horribly mistreated by the Japanese during World War 2, so there was no particular reason to expect her to identify with the Japanese. Apparently they figured that all “Asians” are a single ethnic group: a rather racist world view, frankly. It would have been interesting to confront them with their own racism, if you could have made them realize it.

That was right before the last Republican Convention, and led to Zell Miller’s famous telling off of Matthews.
