Video: Matthews ticked off as Olbermann steps on his lines? Update: “Let’s wrap him up, all right?”

posted at 10:23 pm on August 27, 2008 by Allahpundit

The question mark’s there because it’s impossible to tell what happened to put that snarling grimace on Matthews’s face. Did Olby cut in too soon? Was there dead air in Chris’s earpiece? Could the teleprompter have failed? Did a producer out of frame break wind? The possibilities are endless. But since only one of them fits the congealing narrative of a news network in turmoil from clashing egos — “The situation at our channel is about to blow up” — let’s assume the worst. Way to kneecap a colleague, Kayo!

Exit question: Are there any savvy freelance political advisors out there willing and able to work to defeat Chris Matthews should he run for Senate? Oh, yes, you there, Mr. Wolfson! Step right up! Click the image to watch.

Update: Even better than the first clip: Watch what happens in a preciously rare instance when Olby has to deal with a pundit who isn’t programmed to give him the precise answers he’s looking for. “Let’s wrap him up, all right?”

Update: An excellent point made in Headlines. If they’re this unhinged this week, what will they be like next week in Minneapolis?

Mike Murphy, the Republican representative on MSNBC, is getting Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews and the crowd all worked up. They were on the verge of losing it. Olbermann wanted to cut Murphy’s camera time. They can’t take even the slightest opposing view against Obama and the Democrats. I mean Harold Ford Jr. showed more composure and objectivity than the rest of the MSNBC crew and crowd.

Murphy said MSNBC is so in the tank that they should be filming this on a submarine.

He also said the Clintons will quietly vote for McCain in the voting booth.

Thank you, AP. That made my night.

Weight of Glory on August 27, 2008 at 10:27 PM

I am beginning to see Olbermann in his own separate level of obnoxious arrogant behavior. BDS made this guy popular, but what a loser.

Spirit of 1776 on August 27, 2008 at 10:30 PM

You know what, after spending the entire evening packing up the “important stuff” and preparing in the event I need to evacuate New Orleans on Friday….. I really don’t care about these two liberal idiots. Now more than ever.

On the plus side Bobby Jindal is doing an awesome job preparing for potential problems (as compared to Ray Nagin who only reluctantly left the DNC convention to return to the city).

gumble on August 27, 2008 at 10:26 PM

Yeah, I was watching when Murphy made the comment about how the Clintons would vote McCain, and the crowd booed while Olbermann and Mathews sat there, speechless.

MSNBC would make a fantastic reality show! MTV or VH1 should consider bidding on the network and turning it into a 24/7 drama.

Melchiz on August 27, 2008 at 10:32 PM

It looks like Chris Matthews may have realized how stupid his lines were – “…first African American nominated for President…in almost any major country…”

Then Keith butted in and Chris got annoyed as well.

fossten on August 27, 2008 at 10:34 PM

What’s this? Is KO setting setting his sights on Brokaw?

Nah…I think Matthews really did get a crappy line and was disgusted by that. I do want to see those two go into the octagon though.

hot-heir on August 27, 2008 at 10:36 PM

It was a just a thrill running down… I mean up Matthews leg.

coldshot on August 27, 2008 at 10:36 PM

This is all Rove’s fault. Rove is to blame.

Just think next week they will be where the RNC meets. (I am sorry I can not call it reporting.)

We have so much to look forward to.

I am sure MSNBC is meeting tonight to plan on how to help Obama.

fossten on August 27, 2008 at 10:34 PM

I read the same basic comment on News Busters and agree. I think his brain had just caught up with his mouth and he’d realized that whoever wrote his copy was a braindead idiot. “…African-American…in almost any major country.” Kinda gotta be from America to be African-American. I don’t think that was a good tingle he was feeling there.

mauioriginal on August 27, 2008 at 10:41 PM

*tingle should be thrill.

mauioriginal on August 27, 2008 at 10:41 PM

I’m not denying Olby’s obnoxiousness and dickishness. But, it seems like this makes more sense on this one:

Some readers have suggested that Matthews wasn’t miffed by Olbermann but by the illogic of the line he had been given to read: that Obama was the first African-American to be nominated for president in almost any major country. Too true: few Americans of any color get nominated for president in other countries.

malan89 on August 27, 2008 at 10:45 PM

It looked as if Olby cut him off!

Kinda like Chris would be saying to Olby,

I wasn’t F#$#$^kin finished yet you as$@#$#%$%&le!!haha.

canopfor on August 27, 2008 at 10:46 PM

Ratings ploy, anyone?

SouthernGent on August 27, 2008 at 10:35 PM

Heh. I don’t think Olby’s very concerned with ratings, just “ideological purity”. If he were concerned simply about ratings, he wouldn’t be stacking the lineup of the network with liberal talking point parrots.

malan89 on August 27, 2008 at 10:47 PM

Yep, I think it’s scripted to push ratings.

Blake on August 27, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Bottom line: for Fox News to be the conservative version of MSNBC they would have Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity anchoring their convention coverage, but they aren’t. Sure Fox leans conservative on a lot of things, but they still have ethics unlike the Peacock.

Tim Russert is spinning in his grave.

Jim-Rose on August 27, 2008 at 10:51 PM

This is all Rove’s fault. Rove is so EVIL.

Just imagine how much fun this will be next week and the RNC.

Save the drama for Obama.

Seriously, though, I think what we’re seeing here is the beginning of the end for Olbermann TV. With Tim Russert’s passing, egos are no longer held in check, and it’s only a matter of time before Tweety and Bathtub Boy finally push each other’s buttons one time too many.

first African American nominated for President…in almost any major country…”

The first African American nominated to run for President of all 57 states of America also.

Yes Matthews line was stupid, but then again,so is he.
This being said,he is implying that America is the first country to nominate a black man to lead.

(I know it is not a country, but I guess the UN is not so important all of a sudden,Kofi Annan anyone)

This kind of blows away all the yelling and whinnying from
Europe and other countries about how terrible and racist America is doesn’t it.

Europeans and democrats are going to start running out of things to blame on America and might actually have to start
cleaning up their own back yard.

I think the only reason MSNBC is still in business is because of conservative viewers just looking for something to get riled about.

But I’m not sure this tiff was completely staged. The liberal media are just as split as the rest of the Democrat Party on the whole “Give Hillery her due” vs. “Thou Shalt Have No God Before Obama” camps. What we saw on the screen was just a microcosm of what’s going on in the convention.

Yeah sorta but Chrissy and Keef are both orgasm for Barry types….I dunno I think if we could just harness the gravitational vortex that must occur when the density of their two egos orbit one another we’d have San Fran Nan’s new energy source….well that or the unicorn flatula she runs her SUV on.

sven10077 on August 27, 2008 at 11:57 PM

first African American nominated for President…in almost any major country

(1) It’s stupid to use “African-American” when “Black” does just as well and “Black American” can be used if you need to be more specific. I know white Africans and black non-Africans. Say what you mean.

(2) Do blacks not get nominated for President in African countries? Oh right, “major country.” So not only did they flub the black/African distinction, they just insulted all the black-majority countries of Africa.

(3) Obama is as white as he is black. What is this, the “one drop” nonsense from Showboat?

Mark Jaquith on August 28, 2008 at 12:24 AM

Did a producer out of frame break wind?

No that would be Matthews and Olbermann opening their mouths.

Kini on August 28, 2008 at 12:32 AM

I agree with several of the commenters above like malan89 and fosten. I don’t think he was mad at Olberman. I think he realized the line was absurd, and was mad at whoever wrote that line.

p40tiger on August 28, 2008 at 1:02 AM

“Dueling douchery” is not as fun to watch as I thought it might be. I just get the feeling that their respective parents, living or not, are wondering if they held them enough.

Jaibones on August 27, 2008 at 11:55 PM

Matthews barber is a Flo-bee guided with Visions by Pyrex. He learned the sacred technique from Judy Woodruff.

Should Chrissy whine “He pulled my hair!” upon return from station break we’ll know their MS-LSD make-up is completely cracking.

viking01 on August 28, 2008 at 2:10 AM

I know it’s already been mentioned but….

“MSNBC does not have an ideology,” Griffin said. “We hire smart people who are passionate about their love of politics and love of news.”

Someone get me a bottle of Jack. I’m going to need to down the whole thing to digest that one.

Hawkins1701 on August 28, 2008 at 2:11 AM

These two are truly deranged. Hopefully they both snap and do something stupid soon, stupid enough that we’ll never have to see them on television again.

As for this…

MATTHEWS: I want to ask this question, Mike. You say the audience out there is biased. Where would you find an audience in sane America who would agree with you?

Is this really the first time Matthews has heard someone assert that Hillary wants McCain to win so she can run in 2012? Really, you’d never heard that Chrissy? Dick Morris has been saying it ever since Obama wrapped up the nomination… and Bill’s actions and comments over the past few months have offered good evidence to support the theory that Morris continues to assert. Hillary will do what she has to (pretend to be supporting Obama), while Bill continues to say and do things “in private” to undermine him.

This truly is a management failure that these two characters are able to be in this position to blow up. The stories after the election is over will be more entertaining, if that is possible.

Matthews is a nasty drunk it appears. Don’t they have people to brush his hair before the camera comes on?

Hening on August 28, 2008 at 7:51 AM

As much of a moron hack Mathews has become, I can laugh at him. OTOH olbermutant makes my blood boil. I absolutely despise him.

How about we all get in touch with the NFL AND INSIST THAT TAKE THIS UGLY, DEVISIVE, POLITCAL HACK OFF THEIR GAMES AS A COMMENATOR.

I don’t want to see his ugly face and oubt you do either.

lisalj on August 28, 2008 at 8:27 AM

MSNBC is rapidly going from bad to worse. With the exception of a few people, they have gotten so bad it is amazing NBC stands for it.

If all of this nonsense caused ratings to go up that’s one thing. Whenever I see a new rating’s chart, they are in the tank.

My opinion is if you take KO out of the equation, you would think that MSNBC would return to it’s original state of being a far left network without all of this foolishness.

If NBC honestly thinks that by keeping a total fool on the air for a slight ratings boost, they in all likely will end up in the same place MSNBC will, at the bottom of the commode!

tazmebro on August 28, 2008 at 8:31 AM

Gold, baby….comedy gold!

I’m thinking MSDNC might not pair Olby up with anyone at the GOP convention. Put Matthews and Scarborough on the floor, keep Keith up in the booth.

Olby should have a shirt that says “Does not play well with others” on it.

It’s only a matter of time until Olbergoebbels is wearing a new white sports jacket with the sleeves tied in the back. He’s always been nuts, but now has fallen over the cliff. BTW, the image of the two of these “journalists” wearing clown costumes and bouncing up and down on fart pillows still has me laughing….Classic!!!!!!!!!!!

adamsmith on August 28, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Matthews is a classic leftist liberal…Olby, if out of a job, would beg Fox to take him on as a conservative pundit. Olby is what he is because he panders to the Kos crowd, but to make a living he would pander to anyone.

right2bright on August 28, 2008 at 10:30 AM

Being in TV prodcution, I can tell you it was probably a prompter issue however Chrissy was still upset he was upstage by bathtub boy. Interesting how these two gigantic egos are racing for approval from Russert who is basically an intern. These guys are sooo pathetic and you find them all over the broadcasting field.

RobCon on August 28, 2008 at 1:25 PM

The shenanigans over at MSNBC are appalling, but I think the televised convention coverage has been horrible across the board. If I want to see something live on TV, I try CSPAN, but coverage there can be spotty, too. (Who are the idiots who call into their question lines, for goodness sake?)

What shocked me the most this morning was to realize as I was flipping through channels that I found CNN’s morning coverage to be fairly reasonable, much better than either MSNBC’s slanted coverage or Fox’s frenetic and sophomoric Fox & Friends. Unfortunately, Fox has really lost it in terms of news coverage. They barely covered the Republican congressional oil speeches and seem to be more concerned with marketing personality-driven programming (like O’Reilly), than with with developing quality news & analysis like Special Report with Brit Hume. Although it is still true that Fox is vastly superior to either MSNBC or CNN in terms of having legitimate spokespeople from both ends of the political spectrum giving their opinions, the news reporting at Fox has really deteriorated. It’s a sad day when I find myself preferring CNN over Fox.

Man, I wish Rush would form a new TV network instead of buying a football team!
