U.S. News and World Report: Romney’s out; Update: Rove tried to talk Lieberman out of joining the ticket

Any reason to place more stock in this rumor than every other rumor over the past three weeks? Just the timing: Drudge is red-fonting the claim that McCain’s settled on a nominee as I write this, which jibes with Byron York’s sources telling him this afternoon that the inner circle held their final meeting today about the pick. Like York, I’m nervous that the name’s going to leak tomorrow and it’s going to be both swallowed up by Pericles’s oration at the Parthenon and also perceived as an ungracious attempt to step on his spotlight. But McCain’s stuck. He said the nominee would be revealed on the 29th, so they have to start moving on it now to get the logistics in order.
Still in the running, according to U.S. News: Hutchison (groan), Meg Whitman (groan), and … Joementum (groooooan), although NBC speculates that the timing of the rollout means Lieberman’s not the pick since it would force him to campaign on the Jewish sabbath. Exit question: If it’s true that Mitt’s out, what finished him off? Was Huck right about there being too many antagonistic soundbites floating around out there or is it a case of there simply being too much money on the ticket in light of the attack on McCain’s houses? If the latter, bear this fun fact in mind: Whitman, the former CEO of eBay, is worth a cool $1.4 bil.
Update: Here’s Politico’s report claiming that the nominee will be told tomorrow. Note well: There seems to be no Saturday event on the schedule. Joementum?
The GOP nominee-in-waiting will move to immediately change the campaign conversation from Barack Obama’s football stadium acceptance speech Thursday to the new Republican ticket, to be revealed at a noontime Friday rally in a Dayton, Ohio, basketball arena. McCain and his running mate will then travel by bus to Pennsylvania, where they’ll hold an outdoor event at a minor league baseball stadium in Washington County, just southwest of Pittsburgh. On Sunday, the duo will head to suburban St. Louis for another event to be held at a minor league baseball stadium, this one in O’Fallon, Mo.
Update: Bob Novak claims Lieberman tried to talk McCain out of putting him on the ticket, now Politico claims he did no such thing — but was asked to by none other than Karl Rove. I’ve got a baaad feeling about this.
Republican strategist Karl Rove called Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) late last week and urged him to contact Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to withdraw his name from vice presidential consideration, according to three sources familiar with the conversation.
Lieberman dismissed the request, these sources agreed.
Lieberman “laughed at the suggestion and certainly did not call [McCain] on it,” said one source familiar with the details…
“Rove is pushing Romney so aggressively some folks are beginning to wonder what’s going on,” grumbled one veteran Republican strategist.
I’m assuming three sources aren’t coordinating to feed Politico a lie, which means Novak’s piece is probably wrong and was circulated to try to torpedo Lieberman’s chances by making it look like even he’s against the idea. Is Maverick actually going to drop Joementum on us on Friday?
Update: Say, who are the guys with earpieces following Romney around?

I’m pretty sure McCain’s camp has vetted him by now. Also, he’s on his second term as governor.
Hollowpoint on August 27, 2008 at 10:41 PM
Lookin’ like it’ll probably be Whitman. US News isn’t the only outlet reporting this. Not my first pick, but not unacceptable either. I’ve always said I’d like him to pick someone with private sector experience (as long as it’s not Fiorina, not a fan of her). McCain’s big weakness is the economy and technology (he admits that he doesn’t use a computer, something that bothers me for someone trying to become POTUS in 2009). Plus, it makes a legitimate play for the Hillary people without putting up a liberal. Good job, Mac (I hope I’m not speaking too soon). I would’ve prefered teh Palin!1! or, of course, my man Roms, but Whitman’s an awesome choice.
My own question:
Is all of this just one big head fake (Whitman, Joementum, etc) to make the Mitt pick look more exciting? If he were to pick Mitt when everybody said he would pick Mitt, he’d be chastised for not picking someone exciting. If he pulls the spotlight off of Mitt for a full news cycle before he picks him, it seems a bit more exciting…right?
malan89 on August 27, 2008 at 10:41 PM
That McCain/Pawlenty website would be the ultimate headfake of all headfakes though

It’s Huck.
You all know that, right?
When did Mccain get his boost in the polls?
After the saddleback debate.
Who went with him and coached him on what to say?
Mike Huckabee!
Of course, I didn’t believe Mccain for a minute when he said “at the moment of conception”…but if he puts Huck on the ticket, he gets my vote!

OMIGOD – ROMNEY’S GAY???!????!
WHO KNEW!
Dave Rywall on August 27, 2008 at 10:47 PM
Boy scout?
Terrye on August 27, 2008 at 10:48 PM
winemkr on August 27, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Don’t denigrate the scouts. McCain is all about McCain. If he has any brief moment of clarity, he’ll concede a little and go smart. If not, then please, don’t stay at home….go write in or study up on a more palatable 3rd party. We got a lot of under card to worry about. Especially in CA. Dems and socialists love to sneak things in through propositions.
Cold Steel on August 27, 2008 at 10:48 PM
Someone suggested J. C. Watts.
Fine…’cept for the fact that J. C. has endorsed Obama.

Good point. I didn’t even look at that.
hot-heir on August 27, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Hey Dave, speaking of gay… just how close are Obama and Ayers?
Terrye on August 27, 2008 at 10:49 PM
You and me both and quite a few people I know. A pro-abortion running mate would be the biggest waste of advantage ever and show McCain is an idiot who has no business running anything, much less the country. My only decision will be stay home or third party protest vote.
I’m not that big on Romney, myself. He came a little late to the Pro-life party and while I’m happy to have him, his timing makes his sincerity a little suspect. Plus, from what I can tell, the healthcare program he signed on to in Mass. is not impressive (not even including the $50 dollar abortions). Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think I might be a single issue voter. And I’m alright with that.
Don’t blow it, McCain.
pannw on August 27, 2008 at 10:49 PM
you and the other five Huckadoodle backers will give Juan Queeg a huge boost.
sven10077 on August 27, 2008 at 10:50 PM
I’m referring strictly to the liberal MSM…that’s all. I’m sure McCains people have done their vetting, but something tells me their sources aren’t quite as good as the wolfpack press. That’s my point.
hot-heir on August 27, 2008 at 10:50 PM
Romney is a safe choice… McCain is definitely not going to win by being “safe;” the fact that it’s a dead heat is remarkable. He either needs a woman to grab all those PUMAS out there or someone like Joe! to demonstrate to the PUMAs that he’s going to only do one turn.
I know that the base will be disappointed, but this isn’t a base election. Unless you want higher taxes, ultra-liberal judges, and appeasement, McCain is the best choice that you’ve got. I know that sitting on one’s hands and waiting for New! Reagan! is popular with some, but if you do this, you’ll have to explain to me why I have to pay higher taxes and am unable to make ends meet. (I have to rely a bit on Mom and Dad now; I don’t want to see what it is like when I’m paying the Messiah’s taxes).

Cold Steel on August 27, 2008 at 10:56 PM
Mac, all the Democratic insults in the world won’t damage you as much as the harm you’ll do to your own campaign if you drop Romney. I’ll predict right now that — if this is true — Obama backs into a White House victory with less than 40% of the vote… you’ll finish with less than 35%… and Bob Barr taking most of the rest.
Just as Bush 41 lost to Clinton by 6% — because 19% of his votes went to Ross Perot — all of Barr’s votes will come from abandoned GOPers trying to “Rebuild the Right”… YOUR votes, that you disenfranchised with a bone-headed #2 pick.
Say it so, Mac.
VastRightWingConspirator on August 27, 2008 at 10:56 PM
Cold Steel:
Right, sure. If only Bush1 had been a man it would not have been necessary to vote for Mighty Mouse, I mean Ross Perot. Of course Ross had not a snow ball’s chance of winning, but never mind, the idea was to send a message, and that message was named Bill Clinton and he was married to another message named Hillary and the rest was history.

True. And Rudy to (though I doubt him). My preference out of everyone would be Jindal or Palin. The rich argument works on neither, and they are both real conservatives.

No, I’m not even going to let myself consider the chance for Fred. My heart has already been broken once.
My father can not stand McCain and said he was just going to stay home for the first time in I couldn’t tell you how many years. The man is 76. But after hearing Fred speak at the NRLC conference, he changed his mind and decided he would make the effort and vote for McCain. I’m not sure if it was Fred reassuring on McCain, or frightening with Obama, since I haven’t seen the speech and haven’t really gone into the whole thing with my father, but whatever Fred said, it was convincing.
Of course, if anyone actually takes the time to listen to Fred, he is convincing. Durn fire in the belly!
No…I’m not even going to let myself hope!

malan89 on August 27, 2008 at 11:18 PM
The “rich” argument is a Red Herring. The amount of rich Dems is very high — especially if we’re talking about the Senate. The Senate isn’t called the millionaires’ club for nothing…

Put the blame where it should be Terrye. The only reason Perot had the opening to steal the votes he did, is George H. W Bush gave his party the finger and made a tax deal with the Democrats. That’s what should happen when you screw your party. Your a** gets pitched out. McCain will get away with all his betrayals because of how far left he’s reaching. Lucky you. Backdoor John will likely be elected and the planet will be saved. Not looking forward to the butchers bill…

Yeah, but with McCain, do you think Rove’s suggestions move those ideas along? I think it’s on the contrary. I don’t think McCain listens to Rove…if anything he’d do the opposite. But maybe I have a distorted view of the Rove/McCain campaign relationship.

fiatboomer on August 27, 2008 at 11:21 PM
Me too. The fact that Rove felt it was getting so close to Joe that he needed to personally step in and try to stop it, shows that the previous theories of McCain floating Lieberman as a head fake for Mitt, or to superficially show independents that he really wants a fusion ticket, were wrong. It seems as though McCain really wants Lieberman.

You know, McCain is an old fart (not being dissy here) and there is a strong element of truth in the old adage about teaching old dogs new tricks. JM’s tricks on the GOP have always brought surprise and dismay. I’d be really quite surprised if he cared a whit about what anyone, ’specially Republicans, thought about his VEEP pick.
I often wonder if he cares more about actually becoming Prez or about giving the party a final stick in eye.
