McCain VP rollout on Friday

Expect the news of John McCain’s running mate selection on Friday morning, and not by text message, e-mail, or semaphore. Politico reports that McCain will introduce his VP nominee in the battleground states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Missouri starting at noon ET on the day after Barack Obama speaks from the Temple of O at Invesco Field. The rallies will demonstrate Republican unity as a refreshing change from the Democratic drama in Denver:
John McCain is planning to rollout his vice-presidential nominee in three battleground states this weekend, with large-scale rallies planned for Ohio, Pennsylvania and Missouri, according to aides and advisers.
The GOP nominee-in-waiting will move to immediately change the campaign conversation from Barack Obama’s football stadium acceptance speech Thursday to the new Republican ticket, to be revealed at a noontime Friday rally in a Dayton, Ohio, basketball arena. McCain and his running mate will then travel by bus to Pennsylvania, where they’ll hold an outdoor event at a minor league baseball stadium in Washington County, just southwest of Pittsburgh. On Sunday, the duo will head to suburban St. Louis for another event to be held at a minor league baseball stadium, this one in O’Fallon, Mo.
The Missouri rally is being billed to local Republicans as something of a unity rally, since it will feature McCain, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee — the GOP presidential finalists who effectively divided the vote three ways in the Show Me State’s Super Tuesday primary. A McCain aide warned not to read too much into McCain’s planned guests, however.
Having Huckabee and Romney on the same stage would certainly raise more than a few eyebrows. Huckabee has continued his criticism of Romney all the way to this week, after suggesting that Romney should have defied the Massachusetts Supreme Court on gay marriage. McCain has apparently demanded that the swords be sheathed, but Huckabee’s slap will give these rallies a little more curiosity than they might otherwise have had.
According to Jonathan Martin, we can expect a “safe” pick. The football analogy from his sources is that a handoff up the middle is better when you’re ahead, and that more bad things than good can happen when you put the ball in the air. That seems to eliminate the Joe Lieberman pick, which should cheer the base, but may also mean that Sarah Palin is off the table, too. Having scheduled both Huckabee and Romney for these rallies would hint that McCain didn’t choose either of them — which strongly hints at Pawlenty, although Martin’s sources also said not to read too much into the guest list for the events.
McCain has made the right choice on tactical timing. Some wondered whether McCain would try to steal Obama’s thunder in Denver by announcing his running-mate pick today or tomorrow. That would have been a mistake, for two reasons. First, it seems more likely that the festivities in Denver would have stepped on McCain’s announcement rather than the other way around. Second, with Obama constructing a Greek temple from which to orate at Invesco Field, McCain probably wants as many people focused on this demonstration of Obama’s ego as possible.
A Friday morning pick will step on media coverage of Obama’s speech and give McCain good weekend momentum rolling into the Republican convention. It will also demonstrate a great deal more competency when compared to the botched Biden announcement of last week by Team Obama.

Romney or Palin would be fine with me. If he picks Palin, the one will really be trashed by the Hillarites.

It’s been that for months. Huck can’t be a team player and shut his disparaging trap. He might as well join the Obama camp as one of their attack dogs. That’s all he’s been doing.

Fred! Or Romney, or anyone who isn’t Huckabee.
Palin would rock, especially since Obama just wasn’t progressive enough to pick anyone but a rich white man.

I like Cantor, but he’s not right for VP. At the GOP press conference yesterday, he came across as very bland, and definitely did not seem ready for the national stage. Not to mention that most Americans, and plenty of Virginians, have no clue who he is.

I think McCain has an embarrassment of riches to choose a VP from. Personally, I like the Romney pick the best, since it has the possible effect of swinging Michigan on its own. In the end, I don’t think it will be that close, but better safe than slaves to Apollo.

I would hope for Fred!, but even McCain knows better than to have two elderly guys on the ticket… the MSM poking at their seperate and combined ages would be endless. Thus, here’s hoping for someone equally good like Mitt Romney or Sarah Palin! The more I see and hear Huckabee the more detested I am with the man. An arrogant jackass of the highest degree and his consistent attacks on Romney -along with Mitt’s own refusal to get involved in discussing them; rightly so- only solidify him as a top-notch jerk off. If he’s the VP, McCain is doomed.

As far as I know, there’s only one person on the shortest short-list that has no anti-McCain quotes to pull out and put in an Obama ad. They’ve been in McCain’s corner from the start. I’ll let you figure out who that is, but it’s obviously not Mitt Romney. If it’s a close call, that might be the deciding factor.

McCain needs to crack some skulls (Huckabee’s against the wall) to show he is a strong force to be reconned (sp) with. That would be a stark contrast to Obama who hides behind Michelle’s skirts and hopes Hillary will do the heavy lifting for him.

Buy Danish on August 27, 2008 at 10:44 AM
Pawlenty is more of a conservative than his record suggests. He’s always been in the position of fighting Minnesota’s Left to a stalemate–holding back the flood. That’s a valuable thing to do, and takes a lot of skill, but it’s not a good situation for pursuing your own agenda.
RBMN on August 27, 2008 at 10:46 AM

backwoods conservative on August 27, 2008 at 10:47 AM
I just don’t thyink Fred is “hungry” enough. Romney is hungry and wants to be President. Unlike Hillary, I think he is gracious enough to work for/with McCain and set his sights on the future (Romney/Palin 2012).
Romney said on talk radio the other day that on the “big issues” he is with McCain all the way. There would be some “elitist” ads from the Dems to counter, but Romney can easily do that with his family and I bet he has a good track record for “charity” work.
Mr_Magoo on August 27, 2008 at 10:47 AM
The libs have a meme already built if Mitt is the pick; they’ll talk about the “richest” ticket in American History…
Better to have team Mav rubs their face in their phony identity politics stuff by really being the party of inclusion, and selection based on merit, BY PICKING PALIN !!!
That would draw the Hillarites like a moth to a flame; and flame lord Obamus’ presidential aspirations!
The only thing better would be if Mav pulled off a coup and got General Powell to be his veep…
It would be delicious to watch the media tear at their garments over that kind of development; and it would nullify any race card playing by Glibama !

Huck is looking to the future. He can’t afford to have Mitt as the VP selection, and have the McCain/Romney ticket win. That would put a major kink in his future aspirations for a run at POTUS.
His hits on Mitt are all about Huck, not about what is best for the GOP, nor is it about ideological differences.

I still think an Obama-blunting move would be to pick a J.C. Watts type person. Imagine, a good looking, articulate and CLEAN A-A who is a conservative! What would that do to the Jesses and Als as well as the MSM? It might show the members of the black population that there is anther way of viewing the world and actually capture some votes for the GOP.
It’s all good.
FOWG on August 27, 2008 at 10:57 AM
JC Watts has hinted he will vote for Obama. Please don’t pick him, McCain.
Romney is the smart pick. The only way it wouldn’t be him is if McCain lets his penchant for holding grudges get in the way of his desire to win the presidency.

Beautiful contrast. Compare Obama’s Mile High Stadium extravaganza in the *temple* to a “basketball arena”, a “minor league baseball stadium”, and another “minor league baseball stadium”.
Is this a McCain going to the venues of the common man as a purposeful poke in the eye, or a symbolic ‘driving of the money changers from the temple’?

The MSM will all be doing stand-up “reprise” pieces in front of Osama Obama’s
mosqueGreek temple come Friday morning. McCain’s veep selection will be a footnote at best.I’m saddened to see so many Repubs playing the “identity politics” game with Palin, Jindal, etc. They are falling into the same trap as the Dems: picking someone before they are ripe in order to appease a bloc.
Whoever McCain picks — my guess is Romney — they will still be better (safer for America, too) than The Twerp and his shoot-from-the-lip attack dog.
MrScribbler on August 27, 2008 at 11:06 AM
What is wrong with you people concerning Huckabee?
Most of you are bashing Huckabee for bashing. Huckabee isn’t bashing. He’s answering leading questions. I bet those on here bashing Huckabee didn’t even see what the poster’s said about what he said about Mitt.
It’s hilarious that the posters here ‘don’t want Hucakbee to mess up the unity’. . . but they don’t get that they are essentially kicking him and all his supporters out. Not very ‘unity-e’ from those accusing him.
Huckabee didn’t go nearly as negative during the campaign as Mitt – NOBODY did.
Hatred of Huckabee is really unhealthy for people on this board. I wouldn’t have voted for him, but he mentioned during this interview many different Mormons that he supported and would have voted for without a problem. He said that religion didn’t matter as much as their positions. Mitt certainly has his fair share of positions that are at best questionable.
But hey, it’s fun to HATE isn’t it? The only thing is that I haven’t seen Huckabee hating. I’ve definitely seen posters here hating.

And, unlike Biden, Romney actually was an excellent scholar. (Seeing how Biden likes to think he’s quite the intellectual.) Mitt had a perfect SAT score, graduated Valedictorian at BYU, and graduated from Harvard with a Juris Doctor degree and a Master of Business Administration degree.
So, Biden, let’s be clear — Mitt graduated summa cum laude as an undergraduate at BYU (That means No. 1 in his graduating class). And at Harvard he earned an MBA, graduating Top 5% in his class — a Baker Scholar, and earned a pesky JD degree, graduating cum laude no less.

Two wo quick points: 1) Many people did not like Huck’s use of Christianity as a political tool in the primary, whether to promote himself or to diss Romney. That is not what being a Christian is about. 2) In case you do not remember the primary, Mitt was the candidate everyone else attacked.
