Huckabee to Limbaugh: You know who’ll cause problems on the ticket? Mitt Romney

posted at 5:45 pm on August 27, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Um, what’s Huck doing on Rush’s show? Isn’t their relationship rather highly nuanced?

His logic here isn’t indefensible, but since he now bizarrely appears to occupy number two on the list of politicians most loathed by Hot Air readers (behind only the Messiah himself) I expect nothing less than a full-blown meltdown in the comments.

“During the primary, Romney attacked McCain. He attacked me,” the one-time presidential hopeful said today on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show. “One of the problems McCain would have if he picked Romney was that it takes the Joe Biden issue off the table where Biden is saying great things about McCain and terrible things about Obama. They’ll be running those tapes back over and over during the debates when Romney was attacking McCain and saying, ‘Which time do we trust you? Then or now?’”

Limbaugh responded he didn’t think the primary infighting among Republicans would make much of a difference in the general election.

“That’s true for both parties, and McCain’s running ads right now featuring Hillary endorsing him,” Limbaugh said. “There is a gold mine of Hillary audio and video that McCain can make an ad of. Those things happen in primaries.”

Huckabee said he would still support McCain even if Romney is selected as running mate, citing his opposition to abortion rights.

As I recall, McCain was a lot nastier to Romney than Romney was to McCain, but that’s beside the point here. Limbaugh’s right that you’ll run into this problem to some extent no matter who the pick is (well, not if it’s Pawlenty), but Huck’s right to worry that the DNC will get plenty of mileage out of a Maverick/Mitt ticket. McCain’s ad goofing on Biden for his anti-Obama statements during the primary was effective, but those statements lack the bitterness of the McCain/Romney feud and, I suspect, will be dismissed by most of the public as Biden engaging in strategic gamesmanship at the time. The ads using Hillary against Obama are sharper because the bitterness was obviously there, but (a) she’s not on the ticket, of course, and (b) last night’s hyper-high profile speech will undo some of the damage. The left’s already used the stupid houses thing fairly successfully to try to make McCain seem ridiculous (another subject on which Romney is uniquely exposed); running ads of him bickering with his own VP will make it worse.

Romney actually anticipated this argument yesterday at the “Not Ready” event in Denver, though. Skip ahead to 4:15 and pay attention to his point about how Hillary’s attacks on Obama differ in one critical respect from his attacks on McCain. Quite right. I wonder if they can sell it.

Almost nothing is more aggravating on a board like this than posters who expect the other posters to 1) remember all their previous posts 2) follow all their links or 3) do research to prove points the reading posters never even asserted.

Am I the only one sensing a large segment of seminar posters today?

I detest Huckaphoney. As a born again Southern Baptist I fought the Huckster when he tried to impose a “moderate” leader on the SBC. He failed then. Now he has imposed a “moderate” on the GOP. Comrade Obama, the only one who could, has talked me into voting for McCain. If McCain puts the Kluckabaloney on the ticket or even announces that he will be in the cabinet, then I will flip a coin. Heads I stay home, tails I vote Obama. I am praying for Palin, followed by a fatal heart attack next summer.

You know huck cannot be a real Christian because of his hatred and his vengeance. What exactly did God say – something like “vengeance is mine, saith the Lord.”
Think of this little man who continually goes after Mitt and is completely ignored by Mitt. That must make him so angry. Just think, to be ignored! Oh, the inhumanity!

Vanceone, Point well taken. But, No one had any problems with people going after John McCain for going after “ourside”. Only when Mitt gets attacked does anyone get upset.

Tim Burton on August 27, 2008 at 7:12 PM

Razorsully, I think that there is a difference. There’s plenty of people who don’t like the McCain versus “true conservatives” wars on either side.

But that’s something different. The nominee is supposed to be discussed.

But Huckabee never targeted McCain–only Romney. You’re new here, but when the primaries were going on, Huck pulled some sleazy tricks–proclaiming he was the bestest, cleanest politician while his campaign was the dirtiest.

It’d be one thing if this attack on Romney was isolated. But I don’t think there has been a single bit of news out of Huck the last 5 months that are anything other than “Huck attacks Romney.”

So Huck is getting the backlash of being a sleazebucket. Conservatives expect that stuff from the Democrats. Huck claims to be the best Republican of them all, though. And we don’t want that in our party.

Vanceone on August 27, 2008 at 7:13 PM

apacalyps on August 27, 2008 at 7:16 PM

Huckabee does seem obsessed with Romney and seems to hold a particularly pointed grudge against his, I guess, ideological antagonist.

All I can think of as motivation for this compulsion to bash Romney, if bigotry is not it, is Huckabee’s desire to supersede Romney as a top GOP player. If McCain fails, Romney may well become more viable for the next Presidential election. Huckabee probably figures he’d be in the running too and is trying to knock his competition off now and as often as possible.

Whatever the case, Huckabee looks to be a very small, dishonest man.

he leads in the VP polls. HMMMMMMMM????

The point is, if you look at all the VP polls you will see Romney leads 70% of them or more. Perhaps you would like to comment on the Florida poll that came out today? Romney was twice as popular as Crist in Florida. Or the michigan poll showing Romney gives +9 points to McCain there? No, you wont comment on anything but a couple you Cherry pick from April and July.

More importantly, this isn’t about polls. It about Hucks attitude of tearing down Romney who has said nothing in return. He simple turns the other cheek.

I haven’t heard the interview yet, but maybe Rush realizes deep down he made a mistake NOT supporting Mike. We all saw through Rush’s transparent and ridiculous arguments against Governor Huckabee. He can’t be that stupid, he HAS to know what he was spewing was unadulterated lies. Obviously he can’t, or won’t, come out and just say this so this maybe this is his way of beginning to make ammends. If so, this would be a great first step back into credibilty and out of faux-news.

“Other people have problems too!” is not a defense of the Huckster so much as an admission of his problems. And those problems are, IMO, more egregious for his abuse of the faith.

“[Huckabee] also has had a running feud with the Club for Growth – which he calls ‘the Club for Greed’ – which ran ads attacking him for raising taxes to improve schools.”

“And the Dumond case is likely to reemerge, dredging up not only the gruesome details of the attacks but the complicated political connections. Stevens, the rape victim, is a distant cousin of Bill Clinton. When he was Arkansas governor, Clinton refused requests to reduce Dumond’s sentence. But while Clinton was off campaigning for president in 1992, his lieutenant governor, Jim Guy Tucker, commuted Dumond’s sentence to 39½ years, making Dumond eligible for parole.” Source: Susan Milligan, The Boston Globe, 10/14/07

he leads in the VP polls. HMMMMMMMM????

No appropriate context. alpacalips and many of the Hucklyites think it is proper to take some written words that support their case, lift them from the context that provides meaning and truth, and put it forth as a statement of fact. In many ways it reminds me of the taking of the Bible literally, word for word, without understanding contextual nuance and import.

trailboss on August 27, 2008 at 7:36 PM

Oh, give me a break, apacalyps. I’d surely like the glasses you are always looking through, or maybe the drink you have concocted.
Rush doesn’t make the money he does because he is stupid!

Bambi on August 27, 2008 at 7:37 PM

I don’t get to listen to Rush very often, but based on the times I have listened to him (and from the transcripts on his website), it seemed like the person he’s excited about (for the future of the party) is Jindal. In terms of the other candidates early on, I think he liked Fred Thompson well enough but didn’t like the way he ran his campaign (and Rush was right).
I really doubt Rush has changed his mind about Huckabee. My guess is that this appearance was either requested by McCain or encouraged by McCain to try to patch up the rift and take away some potentially damaging ammo from the dems.

Not only that, Hollowpoint, but when apacalyps says that we all saw that Rush was lying about Huckabee–really? From what I can tell, Rush had Huck pegged pretty well.

Seriously, you Huckabee supporters who cannot admit Huck has any problems are creepy. It’s like talking to an Obama supporter on the DailyKos.

Look, I support Romney. But Romney is not perfect. He’s the best choice, I think, but Romney could have done things differently. Some things he could have emphasized more, maybe stood up to the Dems in Mass. more. I’d have preferred he was anti-abortion from the beginning. But thems the breaks.

I wonder if you can go to hell for hating one individual as much as Mike Huckabee hates Mitt Romney. I will pray for Mike’s salvation.

paulsur on August 27, 2008 at 8:10 PM

My nomination for one of the best Hot Air stories of all-time.

In a quiet, brief, but passionate speech, Weyrich essentially confessed that he and the other leaders should have backed Huckabee, a candidate who shared their values more fully than any other candidate in a generation. He agreed with Farris that many conservative leaders had blown it. By chasing other candidates with greater visibility, they failed to see what many of their supporters in the trenches saw clearly: Huckabee was their guy.

Get a clue. Just because they have delusions of persecution and a fanatical devotion to the (squirrel)Pope, doesn’t mean there not much we agree on – we need them as much as they need us.

peski on August 27, 2008 at 8:10 PM

This is as an attack on God

This all fits into the scenario of the last days.

Hope it takes, otherwise he might run for president of Hell and if he loses they’ll have to create a whole new circle of Hell where the very worst people have to listen to him prattle eternally about his former opponent.

thecountofincognito on August 27, 2008 at 8:12 PM

Okay, I’m late to this, but all I can say is, wow, Mitt was so good in that vid. He’s always seemed the most prepared, the most articulate and he knows how to deliver and sell a persuasive argument.

I sure hope he gets the call.

Huckabee, a candidate who shared their values more fully than any other candidate in a generation.

apacalyps on August 27, 2008 at 8:10 PM

Which values are those? Corruption? Open borders? Amnesty for illegals? Higher taxes? Parole or clemency for murderers and rapists?

Oh yeah – he’s a Christian, so he must be the best candidate.

peski on August 27, 2008 at 8:15 PM

No, but Huckly and you minions have been trying to get him to accept the nomination.

Barack will win because the neocons and crew demonized Huckabee who is a true conservative in the Republican primaries. I mean, the fact they say he’s not a true conservatives speaks volumes about their motives.

apacalyps on August 27, 2008 at 8:18 PM

Truth is, Conservatives know that all Republicans are not Conservative. Mike knows only too well.

apoc, none of the adds that Mitt ran were dishonest.

apacalyps on August 27, 2008 at 8:18 PM

I am sure that their motives must be those of the Satan Himself. Or at least His brothers in Evil, The Mormons.

MB4 on August 27, 2008 at 8:21 PM

With all the attacks on a religion different from that of the posters, I could not but help think of some words written many years ago. A wise man wrote, “There are few things that are good or bad in themselves. They derive their powers to curse or to bless from what we make of them. Consider, for example, the matter of religion itself. The word comes from a root that means ‘to bind together,’ and we should think of religion as a cohesive force helping people to feel closer to one another. Too often in history, however, religion has been a divisive influence, promoting intolerance and hatred and setting people against one anothr. Too many people have just enough religion to hate those who differ, but not enough to love them.” Rabbi Sidney Greenberg, Say Yes to Life, 1982, 70.

Since Romney dropped out of the race in February how many times has he attacked Huckabee? 0

Since Romney dropped out of the race in February how many times has Huckabee attacked him?

“I Wouldn’t Need Acting Lessons to Endorse McCain”, “He could have stopped it, and should have stopped it.”, “I think that there are better choices for Sen. McCain that will have the approval of value voters.” To name a few.

By their fruits ye shall know them.

chansen9 on August 27, 2008 at 8:24 PM

“Barack will win because the neocons and crew demonized Huckabee who is a true conservative in the Republican primaries. I mean, the fact they say he’s not a true conservatives speaks volumes about their motives.”

Are you serious?

How is Huckabee different than the other republicans other than the fact that he is dishonest. I mean seriously. How are his positions different from the so called neo-cons who “demonised” him.

I mean, if you say that Chuck Badlwin is a real conservative, or if you bring up Patrick J. Buchanan, or even Ron Paul i can see how you can make a point of these people being different from the republican party line, but Hucksterbee? Come on…

What in the world are you talking about?

Borislav on August 27, 2008 at 8:24 PM

Huckabee is a Christian like I am a Hindu.

Please…

Borislav on August 27, 2008 at 8:25 PM

Nobody is questioning that Huckabee is truly pro-life. However, there is more to being a conservative than that single issue, and that’s where Huck falls off the wagon. He latched onto the Fair Tax right before the Ames Straw Poll so he could use their organization to come in second, he barely seemed to understand it himself. He doesn’t have a lot of other conservative stances on the issues. He decided he opposed open border policies around November of last year, a lot more recently than Mitt’s 2005 pro-life conversion.

thecountofincognito on August 27, 2008 at 8:26 PM

apacalyps on August 27, 2008 at 6:55 PM

That’s right folks, the Huckabots are sick of thorazine and they’re not gonna take it anymore!

SuperCool on August 27, 2008 at 8:27 PM

Rush doesn’t make the money he does because he is stupid!

Bambi on August 27, 2008 at 7:37 PM

And here we agree. Rush has been accused of being an “indulgant” elite only worried about his pocketbooks. Remember his requests for deeper analysis of Huckabee, when he wasn’t doing the same with other candidates? He is entitled to his opinion, but there are times when he must think his audience are mindless zombies.

apacalyps on August 27, 2008 at 8:28 PM

Huckabee is a man of faith and is a Christian leader, and he is not a person to hide his faith. He wears it openly and honestly. This is as an attack on God, whether people admit it or not, not Mike Huckabee. Jesus predicted that the hate against Christians would be irrational, that’s because it is satanically inspired. Jesus said, “If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you” (John 15:19). “Ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake” (Matthew 10:2). This all fits into the scenario of the last days.

apacalyps on August 27, 2008 at 7:47 PM

Jesus also predicted that there would be many false prophets. Huckabeen raised a son who tortured a dog to death (the Bible says: By their fruits you shall know them); Huck is on Judicial Watch’s list of TOP TEN MOST CORRUPT POLITICIANS of 2007, Huck and his band plays music about getting drunk and laid by hookers and divorcees. Huck shows extreme hatred and jealousy — that is un-Christian behavior. Huck made comments such as “if you don’t like it, you know where you can stick the flagpole” and a joke about the assassination of the Dem’s messiah Obama. This is the short list, okay! Wake up–HuckaBEEN is a deceitful and charlatan wolf in sheep’s skin!

Shelby on August 27, 2008 at 8:29 PM

Is there any other reason why Huck seems to dwell on Romney so much?

Vanceone on August 27, 2008 at 6:21 PM

He has a small winkie?

jnelchef on August 27, 2008 at 8:31 PM

Limbaugh’s right that you’ll run into this problem to some extent no matter who the pick is (well, not if it’s Pawlenty), but Huck’s right to worry that the DNC will get plenty of mileage out of a Maverick/Mitt ticket.

The fact that McCain sparred with Romney in the primaries, yet is willing to team up with him for the general will speak volumes, contrasted to the Obama and Clinton situation, and will trump the argument.

Vashta.Nerada on August 27, 2008 at 8:31 PM

I’ll take “Quite Mad” for 400 Alex.

ronsfi on August 27, 2008 at 8:14 PM

Remember to answer in the form of a question.

Screw Huckabum!

Jerk!

madmonkphotog on August 27, 2008 at 8:33 PM

His logic here isn’t indefensible, but since he now bizarrely appears to occupy number two on the list of politicians most loathed by Hot Air readers (behind only the Messiah himself) I expect nothing less than a full-blown meltdown in the comments.

Mission accomplished.

Slublog on August 27, 2008 at 8:34 PM

Truth is, Conservatives know that all Republicans are not Conservative. Mike knows only too well.

apacalyps on August 27, 2008 at 8:20 PM

The reason he knows this is because he himself is not, in fact, a conservative on anything other than the old lefty mantra stereo-type of “Guns, God, and Gays”.

The guy’s a walking, talking lib characiture of people of faith.

Like so many of his supporters around here…
