Huckabee to Limbaugh: You know who’ll cause problems on the ticket? Mitt Romney

posted at 5:45 pm on August 27, 2008 by Allahpundit

Um, what’s Huck doing on Rush’s show? Isn’t their relationship rather highly nuanced?

His logic here isn’t indefensible, but since he now bizarrely appears to occupy number two on the list of politicians most loathed by Hot Air readers (behind only the Messiah himself) I expect nothing less than a full-blown meltdown in the comments.

“During the primary, Romney attacked McCain. He attacked me,” the one-time presidential hopeful said today on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show. “One of the problems McCain would have if he picked Romney was that it takes the Joe Biden issue off the table where Biden is saying great things about McCain and terrible things about Obama. They’ll be running those tapes back over and over during the debates when Romney was attacking McCain and saying, ‘Which time do we trust you? Then or now?’”

Limbaugh responded he didn’t think the primary infighting among Republicans would make much of a difference in the general election.

“That’s true for both parties, and McCain’s running ads right now featuring Hillary endorsing him,” Limbaugh said. “There is a gold mine of Hillary audio and video that McCain can make an ad of. Those things happen in primaries.”

Huckabee said he would still support McCain even if Romney is selected as running mate, citing his opposition to abortion rights.

As I recall, McCain was a lot nastier to Romney than Romney was to McCain, but that’s beside the point here. Limbaugh’s right that you’ll run into this problem to some extent no matter who the pick is (well, not if it’s Pawlenty), but Huck’s right to worry that the DNC will get plenty of mileage out of a Maverick/Mitt ticket. McCain’s ad goofing on Biden for his anti-Obama statements during the primary was effective, but those statements lack the bitterness of the McCain/Romney feud and, I suspect, will be dismissed by most of the public as Biden engaging in strategic gamesmanship at the time. The ads using Hillary against Obama are sharper because the bitterness was obviously there, but (a) she’s not on the ticket, of course, and (b) last night’s hyper-high profile speech will undo some of the damage. The left’s already used the stupid houses thing fairly successfully to try to make McCain seem ridiculous (another subject on which Romney is uniquely exposed); running ads of him bickering with his own VP will make it worse.

Romney actually anticipated this argument yesterday at the “Not Ready” event in Denver, though. Skip ahead to 4:15 and pay attention to his point about how Hillary’s attacks on Obama differ in one critical respect from his attacks on McCain. Quite right. I wonder if they can sell it.

It was funny though. Huck’s ranting to Rush about how McCain’s people weren’t the ones helping him bash Romney, “it was the Paul people”.

Ten minutes later a caller calls in and says “Rush, that guy lied to you.”

Rush said he’d look into it… so eagerly awaiting tomorrow’s show.

while i agree that flip-flopping on abortion is bad, and myself have some questions about some of the more ‘unorthodox’ mormon teachings and ‘history’, i would have to say that huck’s goading about ‘jesus and satan are brothers’ seems a little like bigotry.

maybe if mitt was a tv mormon preacher AND running for pres it would make more sense. but mitt’s religion isn’t on trial, his politics are.

i still say the “no vote for mormon because of mormon alone” is bigoted, because being mormon doesn’t conflict with the constitution (which is islam COULD be a barrier, because of sharia law).

and this comes from a guy that does NOT want Romney in, precisely because so many don’t want romney. Romney is a $100 million electoral BUST…. $100 million and what do you win? 3 counties in California!

I went to Rush’s website and apparently Huck NOW wanted to contradict the allegation that he was opposed to Mitt because of Mormonism. Well, that’s all well and good except that he’s about five months late in wanting to get the point across.

It might suggest, however, that Mitt is the veep candidate and McCain told Huck to do whatever he needed to do to get this point needed to get cleared up.

BigD on August 27, 2008 at 6:05 PM

I don’t hate Huckabee the way 99% of posters here do, but I think that enough is enough when it comes to badmouthing Romney (even though I think choosing Romney would be a huge mistake for McCain to make, partially for the reasons Huckabee spells out). This is not the laid back, goofy bass-playing guy we saw during the primaries. This seems more of a real vindictive streak that is unbecoming to him as a “Christian leader” which I read reports of from some of the people who worked closely with him in Arkansas. The only good thing in this whole Huckabee mess is that he seems to have drawn fire off of John McCain from the posters here, which is a relief.

Bleed_thelizard on August 27, 2008 at 6:11 PM

Romney has conducted himself with more dignity and class throughout this campaign season than Huck could ever hope to have. And I for one am really sick of the class warfare/politics of envy argument currently being waged against him.

Since when is it a crime to be successful? At least Mitt attained his wealth through intelligence and hard work. Many other Americans achieve great success in the same way, regardless of their socio-economic background. Is the electorate to assume that Barbara Boxer, Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, and Hillary Clinton are paupers? Why is it only a crime to be rich if you’re a Republican? How come nobody condemns the government for the “windfall profits” they make off the backs of hard-working taxpayers?

Dariaanne on August 27, 2008 at 6:11 PM

While Huckster has certainly been milking his 15 minutes as much as possible (who can blame him really since he’s got nothing better to do) he had a point on this one. Lots of people have been making the same point since the McCain ads with Hillary and Biden came out.

I was concerned about it as well, until I saw Romney address the issue with Combs last night. He shut Alan down, which never happens.

Hick needs to make his pundit cash before November. After that, he’ll be moving in with Obama’s brother in Kenya.

Damiano on August 27, 2008 at 6:14 PM

Rush let Huckabee get away with so much spin. The West Virginia primary fiasco was all the Ron Paul people’s fault. What?! No one at the time blamed Ron Paul. Wish Rush had pinned him on that.

Then blaming Romney for attack ads when his were more contrasting then attack. How about the ad stunt Huckabee pulled showing his own attack ad to free media and the press and McCain’s phony ad. Those were personal attacks. Personal attacks are beneath a real statesmen. But to criticize a position, a policy, a record, a vote, a resume. Those types of pieces are justified, but not belittling personal qualities. Huckabee needs to grow up and stop whining about fairplay in politics and blaming Romney for his misfortune. He has only himself to blame for offering so much fodder in corruption, commutations, spending projects, speaking gaffes, and religious divisions.

Lori on August 27, 2008 at 6:17 PM

I wonder if he was nicer when he was fat? Maybe starving himself has turned him into a vindictive, nasty prick.

TheBigOldDog on August 27, 2008 at 6:17 PM

I was opposed to Mitt getting the nomination, and think McCain could do better than Romney for a VP candidate though he wouldn’t be a terrible choice (not nearly as bad as Lieberman for example).

However, I’m a nobody typing anonymously on the Internet. For the Huckster to make multiple public appearances to talk smack about Mitt when he’s being considered for the VP slot shows that Huck is the petty, opportunistic, vindictive, bigotted, self-aggrandizing little weasel that most of us view him as.

Mitt needs to work on his conservative credentials before I view him as ready for the presidency, but no matter what Huck does from this point on I wouldn’t vote for him to be assistant dogcatcher.

tl;dr: Shut up, Huck. Go away. Don’t come back.

Mormon Doc on August 27, 2008 at 6:20 PM

If Huck claimed that it was Ron Paul that sunk Romney in west virginia instead of his own supporters, the man just broke one of the ten commandments by lying.

For that is what it was–a lie. That little stunt cost Romney West Virginia (barely–Romney had just about as many votes as both McCain and Huck together) and that helped give McCain momentum.

So Huck killed his presidential campaign to sink Romney’s. He REALLY hates Romney, and I don’t know why.

Why does Huck hate Mitt so much? Romney barely acknowledges the man. I can only see some options:

1) Romney did something to him personally. But no one seems to know what that could be. Romney also seems to not be the kind to do anything personal–he’ll methodically kill you, but politely and fairly.

2) Religious bigotry. Huck swears that’s not it, but this certainly seems a possibility, since the majority of Huck’s supporters are rabidly anti-Mormon and given Huck’s history.

3) Just plain envy, jealousy, other form of “Wah! Romney’s better than me, and I hate that!”

Is there any other reason why Huck seems to dwell on Romney so much? Not even his supporters can justify this constant drumbeat of focus on Romney. Even if Huck is trying to tear down a VP rival, Romney’s certainly not the only one in the race. Where’s Hucks diatribe against Pawlenty or Palin?

I don’t get it. Does anyone else?

” …but since he now bizarrely appears to occupy number two on the list of politicians most loathed by Hot Air readers”

Um, can you really blame us at this point? It seems that Huck’s only purpose in life anymore is to classlessly bash Mitt Romney and nothing more. Mitt graciously bowed out when it was clear he wasn’t going to get the nomination … while Huck hung on well after it was mathematically impossible. And who was he running against that whole time? Mitt, of course.

But to keep going on and on and on about Mitt like this well after both are out of the race is just utterly pathetic, and it shows him to be a classless, graceless, piece of shinola.

Huck has more than earned his loathing from not only HotAir readers, but conservatives and republicans in general.

BJ on August 27, 2008 at 6:33 PM

If Huck claimed that it was Ron Paul that sunk Romney in west virginia instead of his own supporters, the man just broke one of the ten commandments by lying.

He calls himself a Christian pastor and wraps himself in Christianity while acting in the most unchristian like manner imaginable. He’s personifies the wolf in sheep’s clothing. He grins to your face while he stabs you in the back. He puts out bigoted libels while claiming he wasn’t in the same breath. He makes attack ads that he claims his morals won’t allow him to do, while he shows them to the media for broadcasting. In short, hes a two-face lying con-man who has killed any chances he had to be a real leader.

If McCain did choose Romney as his VP the Huckster would probably sign on to be Obama’s chief attack dog.

I really don’t know that much about Huckabee, but when I see him on TV I can’t help but think I’m looking at Jimmy Swaggart(sp?) without the piano or personality.

I’ll leave the psychoanalysis to collie.

My collie says:

For AllahPundit, Huckabee is the new Rosie. Rosie never failed us. We could always count on her to give the mental disorders suffered by left-wing loons a high-profile voice. Her exhibitionism was exploited by the mass media — making the disease of liberalism plain for all to see. Similarly, Mike never fails to open his mouth and enuciate yet another utterance what that AP can not use it as vindication for how he feels about people of faith.

So, AP. Do you refute the accusation and deny the allegation? Or is collie smarter than the average dog?

Huckabee is nothing but jealous over Romney.

For some reason, Huckabee thinks he’s this great comedian. Rush asked him a serious question about the hurricane approaching New Orleans and Huckabee made a joke about getting Pat Robertson to pray it away from N.O.

For Huckabee’s sake, I think Rush was holding back. Rush sounded shocked when Huck denied what really happened in West Virginia.

He is not more a liberal, Mormon basher than anyone else on this board.

Well that’s a glowing endorsement of someone’s character if ever I’ve heard one!

“On illegal immigration, Huckabee makes George Bush sound like Rep. Tom Tancredo (R.-Colo.). Huckabee has compared illegal aliens to slaves brought here in chains from Africa, saying, ‘I think, frankly, the Lord is giving us a second chance to do better than we did before.’

“Toward that end, when an Arkansas legislator introduced a bill that would prevent illegal aliens from voting and receiving state benefits, Huckabee denounced the bill, saying it would rile up ‘those who are racist and bigots.’

“He also made the insane point that companies such as Toyota would not invest in Arkansas if the state didn’t allow non-citizens to vote, because it would ‘send the message that, essentially, “If you don’t look like us, talk like us and speak like us, we don’t want you.”‘

“Like all the (other) Democratic candidates for President, he supports a federal law to ban smoking – unless you’re an illegal alien smoking at a Toyota plant.” Source: Ann Coulter, Human Events, 10/15/07, p. 6

“If Huckabee does get some traction, The Boston Globe’s Susan Milligan has details of a little-remembered aspect of his record as governor: when he paroled convicted rapist Wayne Dumond, Milligan writes, ‘Huckabee, whose self-deprecating humor and easy candor have charmed many on the campaign trail, bristles when asked about the case, in which Dumond – now dead – was paroled from an Arkansas prison, with then-governor Huckabee’s endorsement, only to sexually assault and kill a woman in Missouri… . If Huckabee, who is creeping upward in the polls, gains more momentum, the case is certain to become an issue.’” Source: http://abcnews.go.com, 10/15/07

“Dumond’s case is notorious in Arkansas. In 1984, he raped a 17-year-old girl. While awaiting trial at his home, he was castrated by, he said, masked intruders. Later, after Dumond went to prison for life, some people in Arkansas saw the sentence as excessive, especially given his mutilation.

“Huckabee was one, and, after becoming governor in 1996, he announced his desire to commute Dumond’s sentence. Dumond’s rape victim, Ashley Stevens, saw it differently.

“Stevens, now 40 and living in the western United States, said she tried to persuade Huckabee not to shorten the sentence for Dumond.

“‘I told [Huckabee]: If you ever let him out, he’s going to do it again,’ she said in an interview.”

I can do this ALL DAY boys. The man is a never-ending well of telling moments that out just how much of a theocratic populist the dude really is.

Does anyone put any truck in what the Florida Round Boye says; since he predicted how badly Hillary was going to lose the election for Senator in New York…?

Oh, and now that I think about it; how well his little “operation chaos” [lower case] worked out…?

Ding, Ding, Ding…!

I don’t think AP feels that Huck represents “people of faith.” Thus, I think your collie is wrong on this point, CyberCipher.

Enough of the people who have represented faith here have condemned Huck to show that outside of a very few, there’s widespread disgust with Huck and his tactics.

And for an Atheist, Allah knows a lot about the Bible, et al. He’s handy with an obscure quote. So I think he knows quite a lot, really. And he’d know that many people really are quietly faithful.

I still like Huckabee.

keepinitreal on August 27, 2008 at 6:40 PM

Please think for yourselves and listen to what Huckabee says in all context.

It’s not just what he says, it’s the fact that he can’t let single say go by without saying it. Can’t you notice Huck is the ONLY one who thinks the primaries have not ended? Can you imagine Bill Richardson sniping day after day at Biden? Only in Hucks world can this be acceptable.

hanzblinx on August 27, 2008 at 6:42 PM

I want Huck to shut the HUCK up. It’s just that simple. He’s a sore loser.

Oink on August 27, 2008 at 6:44 PM

I still like Huckabee.

keepinitreal on August 27, 2008 at 6:40 PM

Given that he:

1) Doesn’t stand for conservative values when it actually counts

2) Doesn’t see any separation between the roles of an individual Christian and the state

3) Uses his faith as a marketing tool like some cheap televangelist looking to make a buck off a rube

I can’t see why.

TheUnrepentantGeek on August 27, 2008 at 6:44 PM

And the Huckster continues to insult the intelligence of everyone. Next please.
