DNC shifts nomination vote to the hotels; Update: Business as usual

posted at 2:40 pm on August 27, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Expect to see a roll-call vote at the Democratic convention tonight?  Be prepared for disappointment, as Hillary Clinton’s delegates will have to do.  Instead of a normal floor vote, the tallies will be taken before delegates arrive at the Pepsi Center:

Delegates to the Democratic National Convention are casting ballots for the party’s presidential nominee at their hotels this morning.

The vote, negotiated by the campaigns for presumptive nominee Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, is expected to speed proceedings from the floor of the Pepsi Center tonight, when totals will be read from the floor as part of a roll call vote.

But it is also leaving many delegates perplexed.

Some delegates were confused because Sen. Clinton was not expected to release her delegates until the afternoon.

“It doesn’t make any sense to me,” said Mary Sullivan, a Clinton delegate from Albany, N.Y. “I’m gonna vote for Hillary. I’m a Clinton delegate and she hasn’t released me yet.”

What happened?  Why has the DNCC suddenly decided to cast these votes away from the cameras and the television audiences?  It’s almost as if someone expects people to cause problems for the smooth and unifying election of Barack Obama as the party’s presidential nominee.

Think this shows unity?  Some of Hillary’s delegates want outside observers to ensure that the vote isn’t rigged:

Some of the Clinton supporters in the delegation raised questions about how the process would work and said they wanted an observer there to ensure that the ballots were counted accurately.

“I think it sucks,” said Blanche Darley, a Clinton delegate from El Paso.

Yeah, maybe they could have ACORN provide disinterested observers.  Or if Jimmy Carter hasn’t left, he could lend his expertise in monitoring banana-republic elections.  And after the Democrats go to all this trouble to hide the voting process, they can then explain their support for card-check legislation.

Flashback: Most unified party in 30 years?  Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Update: Politico now reports that the process is a muddle, but they’re trying to conduct this in a traditional manner:

Barack Obama’s campaign has reverted to plans for a traditional roll call on the convention floor, and the Denver Post reports that delegates are voting this morning in their hotels.

There’s a bit of confusion about the plans for a roll call, and some Democrats say they’re dissatisfied by a process that has them voting in private, by state. But that’s the old-fashioned way, says my colleague Andy Glass, who’s covered these for years. The roll call is a roll call of states, not of delegates, and there was never the prospect of a one-by-one show of hands on the convention floor.

If this is business as usual, as Ben Smith now reports, is Politico retracting its earlier story?  And why were Hillary delegates so upset by the earlier change?

Blowback

Classic, that way when they literally strongarm the delegates they won’t be filmed.

Well….Saddam Hussein would feel right at home in the DFL.

Look! Obama got 99% of the vote, just like Saddam!

Its the Cabal of Super Delegates ensuring they have the votes to get Obama selected (not elected).

Expect strong arming of Super Dels…

Question, since when do the Candidates run the selection process? Do not the Dems have rules about this that they need to follow?

Since most classy hotels now have phones next to the potty, Democrat delegates can call in their votes from the appropriate postion in which to pay appropriate tribute to their craptacular candidate.

As that Democratic hero Stalin once said, It doesn’t matter who votes, what matters is who counts the votes.

No matter what the actual vote total is, this guarentees that Obama will win, and win by a sizeable margin.

PUMAPAC said last night on their internet radio broadcast they were trying to stop this… they needed 300 signatures, and they got over 400, and the DNC shifted rules and then said they needed 20% of Hillary’s delegation which would have been 800.

PUMA people also think Hillary had a secret message to them in her speech last night. She mentioned the sisterhood of the traveling pants suit–a phrase created by a PUMA member–and Harriet Tubman’s advice on “Keep Going.”

FUN.

Bishop on August 27, 2008 at 2:57 PM

Not only does this show there is no unity in the Democratic Party, it clearly makes obvious that Democrats can’t run the government.

Steve Tsouloufis on August 27, 2008 at 2:57 PM

This is surprising, but what an opportunity for the Republicans! In St. Paul, every vote, every state should announce their pick in primetime. No hidden Stalin-style election.
More proof that there may be something to the rumor that the Dems are playing to lose, so that they can continue to throw rotten cabbage at the White House from the ‘moral high ground’. If they have the White House, they might have to be responsible for their actions.

Doug on August 27, 2008 at 2:57 PM

Okay, in all seriousness, if I had been sent to Denver as a Democrat delegate representing a state that overwhelmingly went to Hillary, I would walk out. Now. And take as many other Hillary delegates with me as I could persuade. I’d find the nearest news cameras and start talking very loudly about my grievances. This stuff is totally not right. Obama will still get the nomination if there’s a televised roll call.

HOWEVER, it should be noted that this is playing into Hillary’s hands by making Obama look even more like an egotistical totalitarian thug who can’t handle any public display of disloyalty at all. It’s further upsetting her supporters with the appearance of further mistreatment by the party and Obama, not to mention a whiff of disenfranchisement. And it’s allowing us Republicans to laugh at the DNC some more. They should just grit their teeth, allow the public roll call, and try to move past it as quickly as possible.

I can’t believe that a circus of a campaign like Obama’s beat the Clinton juggernaut in the first place. I just can’t believe it. He’s going down, if it’s the last thing Hillary Clinton does.

Romeo13 on August 27, 2008 at 2:43 PM

Especially a candidate who doesn’t have the election locked down with commited delegates from primaries and (blech) caucuses?

This is a travesty, and as far as I’m concerned, it is vote-rigging of the most obvious kind. Obama couldn’t win at the ballot box, so he’s doing what his mentors have taught him to do.

Say, can Hillary get a receipt for this stolen election?

NeighborhoodCatLady on August 27, 2008 at 2:57 PM

How does it feel, lefties?

How does it feel when the official LOSER of your election can’t keep her BIG MOUTH SHUT and keeps subtly implying that even though she LOST, in some sense she ACTUALLY WON.

You heard her last night: “it’s time for my 18 million voters who voted for me and not Barack Obama, it’s time for all of us disenfranchised Democrats to stand behind the man who received fewer votes, that man who claims victory in the primary nomination, let’s have a round of applause for Barack Hussein Obama!”

That’s what Algor did, shameful bastard, after the 2000 election that he LOST. “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you do something else.” Har-de-har-har you big phony.

Pretty simple…if Obama wins, Hillary is out for 2012…if he loses she is in for 2012.
Hardly anything more needs to be said. You can count on almost every foolish move that Obama makes having Hillary’s people fingerprints on it.
I wouldn’t doubt for a moment that her people suggested a “secret” ballot to “help” Obama. Knowing full well the media would have a field day with this.
You can bet that Obama is surrounded by Hillary spies, helping undermine him. He probably feels like the little dictators that are facing a coup…he just doesn’t know who is on his side, and who isn’t.
This is Hillary’s future, the Clinton’s future, everything they have worked for. Stolen because she got the popular vote, stolen because Edwards lied and stole delegates and votes, stolen because race trumps gender.
She will not allow her future, her path to being president, taken from her…and Bill won’t allow it.
McCain won’t win…Obama will lose.

Actually, they might use the ballots as any entry ticket —only delegates that vote for Obama may leave their hotel rooms (or enter the convention) tonight. Reveals the thinking behind the non-secret voting for the unions and Obama’s successful effort to have all his competition removed from the ballot in Illinois. The only way to gurantee victory is cheat and force your opponents off the ballot. The Democrats want to make sure their candidate is selected not elected.

This group of Democrats is loudly and freely tossing around the word “corruption” to refer to the DNC, and calling the forthcoming roll call vote, whatever ultimate weird form it may take, as “definitely rigged” and “dishonest”, which you can see in this blog post here. The Denver Group promises ongoing action against the DNC beyond the convention :) I continue to be astonished at how the DNC has ticked off, and continues to tick off, so many of its partisans.

This election was supposed to be the Powerball Lottery for the Democrats, but it looks like Obama’s winning ticket just flew out the window over the bridge to nowhere.

Just a tragedy.

If they could do this in the General Election, they would! They did it in Chicago in 1960 and tried it again in Florida in 2000.

I heard that the Obama campaign is filing suit to hold floors 7-16 of the Marriott open an extra couple of hours.

If Osama Obama can’t stand to go through the open voting process that the Dems have screamed about for years in general elections, he’s more of a moral coward than I thought.

Add that to all his other flaws, and he’s not a suitable candidate to run for high school president, much less any position of responsibility.

Man up, wimp.

Looking forward to RNC commercials about this!

We now have one of the two major US parties being run by thugs and lunatics.

Was there actually a time when the Democrat Party wasn’t run by thugs and lunatics?

When was it, between 2:10 p.m. and 3:03 p.m. on February 3rd, 1946?
