McCain on owning eight houses: I didn’t have a house for five years as a POW; Update: Romney fades as houses meme takes off?

The left’s been hammering him for awhile for using his Vietnam experience as an all-purpose excuse but it was Maureen Dowd — bestower of the original Absolute Moral Authority laurel wreath upon Cindy Sheehan three years ago — who broke the idea big on Sunday. I take his basic point, that we shouldn’t begrudge a man who had his limbs broken for his country a nice house or eight, but Team Maverick has been, shall we say, inartful in fully articulating that argument, using it to shut down scrutiny the way Silky uses family misfortune. His POW heroism is his most valuable political asset; as with any asset, the greater the supply, the less valuable it is. Why he’d feel obliged to supply it here instead of borrowing Obama’s “distraction” rhetoric or mentioning Kerry’s houses to deflate the charge of plutocracy, I simply don’t know. But the worst thing the campaign could do, much worse than even overusing the POW meme, is to use it in circumstances that make it seem ridiculous. Especially since ridicule is what McCain himself has used so effectively to knock Obama’s own, very different sort of halo clean off.

Update: Lowry noted this morning in his Huckabee post that McCain’s going to have problems now adding another guy with several mansions to his name to the ticket. Advantage: Pawlenty.

Sources close to Romney tell us that his camp has not had vice presidential talks and dealings for a while, leading them to believe that the other running mate topping McCain’s list has edged him out. Of concern is the likelihood that the Democrats would dub a McCain-Romney ticket the richest ever. In fact, at a breakfast today, when I asked Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow if the Romney name would help in the industrial state once governed by his dad, she turned the question to Romney’s wealth. She even added up the number of houses Romney and McCain have, coming to a total of 12.

This whole house meme is idiotic. Don’t we want people to be successful? Don’t we want people to have as many houses as they want?

Instead of using the POW defense (which is a valid point in my opinion) he should target the premise of this line of attack. I’m tired of Republicans accepting the whole “let’s hate the rich” thing that Democrats keep spewing.

In a perfect world everyone would be rich and have 10 homes.

Yes, but recirculating it? I’d like to hunt that one down for a little personal recreation.

eaglesdontflock on August 26, 2008 at 7:24 PM

Now I am more convinced than ever that the house thing is a deliberate attempt to scare McCain away from picking Romney. Obama’s team must have some bad-ass poll numbers in Michigan, Nevada, Colordao, and New Hampshire with Romney on the ticket. Too bad if McCain falls for it.

McCain has an easy way to explain whoever he picks, and this is how I hope he really does make he decision. If I had not run for President, who would I have endorsed, or who would I have encouraged to run who did not run? If he would not have endorsed Mitt Romney, he shouldn’t choose him as his running mate.

rockmom on August 26, 2008 at 7:26 PM

But the worst thing the campaign could do

Is let the msm tell us who is appropriate for a vp and who isn’t. McCain and Romney have however many houses they have because thier families worked hard to be successful, met challenges head, took risks and achieved goals. We start eliminating people as possible candidates for the republican party because they personify the American Dream we might as well hang it up. How about running adds about how the leading demofascists have enriched themselves at the public expense? If the democrats want to play that way how about campaign ads featuring millionaires clinton, gore, shumer, pelosi, feinstein and all the connections they used to make thier millions.

I’m really starting to believe there are no conservatives holding public office, it’s just a smoke screen to fool us.

peacenprosperity on August 26, 2008 at 7:30 PM

all the connections they used to make thier millions.

Through thier government positions.

peacenprosperity on August 26, 2008 at 7:31 PM

Uh, no. John McCain owns zero houses.

The liberals are terrified of Romney. That’s why they worked so hard, with their partners in media, to make McCain the GOP Presidential nominee.

They must find a way to keep Romney off the ticket. A McCain/Romney ticket is a disater for Obama/Biden.

Is that why Markos Moulitsas told his lemming followers at his website to vote for Romney, “because if Mitt wins, Democrats win.”

I’m not convinced that anyone other than republicans voted for McCain. And in the interests of full disclosure, I would rather see McCain win than Obama, and I voted for Romney when the republican primary came to my state. And McCain clinched it a few states later. Again, I would rather see Mitt Romney be the republican nominee, not McCain. For the same reason that I wish that Bob Dole wasn’t the primary winner and ended up against Clinton. But McCain’s numbers are very promising this far out.

wise_man on August 26, 2008 at 8:03 PM

Romney was brutal against Obama today…going after him for Rezko, Ayers, infanticide. He’s the attack dog McCain needs on the ticket.

I wonder how a Romney / Biden debate would look like.

Does this fossil answer EVERY question with “I spent 5 years in a prison cell”? Yeah yeah yeah…and now you own 8 houses you and you’ve been raping the taxpayer for decades too. Juan McShame, you’re a joke! Enjoy your pity party with some of “God’s Children”.

DanKenton on August 26, 2008 at 8:24 PM

Back when Kos said that, it made the rounds on all of the conservative sites, which was obviously the goal. Exit polling did not reflect any such activity taking place.

DanKenton on August 26, 2008 at 8:24 PM

According to democrats who are going to ignore the issues and attempt to use this as a wedge issue to clobber McCain while they weren’t the least bit upset when John Kerry did similar things 4 years earlier. Yeah, you could say.

wise_man on August 26, 2008 at 8:32 PM

Do the Dem baiters think that we are playing Monopoly with all of their attention to how many houses the McCains own?

I guess so, in that the Dems are planning to spend us into social programs with Monopoly money.

onlineanalyst on August 26, 2008 at 8:33 PM

I think the Democrats have found a real winning issue here, the evils of property ownership.

(Now, away with this illegals distraction because that is not the point of this thread.)

Romney is the pick….

“He (Romney) received millions of votes, yet he wasn’t on the ticket… Is John McCain afraid of the truth.”

And he’s going to pick Pawlenty who received NO votes? At least biden got .00003% of Iowa.

I just hope he lives in the White House soon!!!

I saw a clip of Mitt today taking it to Obama … wow … I’d forgotten how good he was on his feet.

He’d beat the cr@p out of Joe Bribe’em.

Mitt!

ex-Democrat on August 26, 2008 at 10:01 PM

If McCain drops Romney then there is a belief that Pawlenty has the chops to get it done.
From what I have seen on video, I have severe doubts.
The “house” gambit is a bluff that goes nowhere due to BO’s shady Rezko house deal.
Their bluffing with a pair of 3’s McCain- don’t go wobbly now!

If you can’t handle exposure to the sunlight low life’s like that then make sure to keep your blinders tightly fixed on the sides of your head. If they don’t get exposed its all just conjecture and I only posted the first paragraph if I truly wanted shock value it could have been worse, that wasn’t the intent.

Also keep in mind that the proprietor of this site, Michelle Malkin is very capable of addressing any issue here she cares too. You might even read some of the hate mail she receives, that she posts.

She would quickly make it obvious if I go over the line.

Hmmm… it occurred to me that I had head a lot about the disparity imposed by rich people and how they don’t care about what poor people have to deal with every day.

But where was it?

Oh, I remember:

“That’s not the Reverend Wright I knew…”

So why does your campaign sound exactly like his sermon, Obama?

There is not one single argument in that whole list for McCain becoming President. Why is that? Oh, never mind, I know already.

MB4 on August 27, 2008 at 3:05 AM

I think the real question is whether McCain can spare a house for Barack Obama’s half-brother in Kenya. Poor guy — if only he had inflated his tires.
