McCain on owning eight houses: I didn’t have a house for five years as a POW; Update: Romney fades as houses meme takes off?

The left’s been hammering him for awhile for using his Vietnam experience as an all-purpose excuse but it was Maureen Dowd — bestower of the original Absolute Moral Authority laurel wreath upon Cindy Sheehan three years ago — who broke the idea big on Sunday. I take his basic point, that we shouldn’t begrudge a man who had his limbs broken for his country a nice house or eight, but Team Maverick has been, shall we say, inartful in fully articulating that argument, using it to shut down scrutiny the way Silky uses family misfortune. His POW heroism is his most valuable political asset; as with any asset, the greater the supply, the less valuable it is. Why he’d feel obliged to supply it here instead of borrowing Obama’s “distraction” rhetoric or mentioning Kerry’s houses to deflate the charge of plutocracy, I simply don’t know. But the worst thing the campaign could do, much worse than even overusing the POW meme, is to use it in circumstances that make it seem ridiculous. Especially since ridicule is what McCain himself has used so effectively to knock Obama’s own, very different sort of halo clean off.

Update: Lowry noted this morning in his Huckabee post that McCain’s going to have problems now adding another guy with several mansions to his name to the ticket. Advantage: Pawlenty.

Sources close to Romney tell us that his camp has not had vice presidential talks and dealings for a while, leading them to believe that the other running mate topping McCain’s list has edged him out. Of concern is the likelihood that the Democrats would dub a McCain-Romney ticket the richest ever. In fact, at a breakfast today, when I asked Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow if the Romney name would help in the industrial state once governed by his dad, she turned the question to Romney’s wealth. She even added up the number of houses Romney and McCain have, coming to a total of 12.

It’s very clear many on here are tired of McCain’s POW references.

What I’m hoping is that the general public will listen and think “what sacrifice, or for that matter what service, has Osama Obama performed for his country?”

It may have been years ago, but as long as McCain bears the scars, he’s entitled to the stars.

Patriotism has no expiration date.

Lies, inexperience, questionable associations and Messiah complexes do. In fact. I’d say Obama is already well past his sell-by date.

I agree with you, but for the fact that a couple of Justices will be nominated in the next 4 years.

There’s also something just wrong with a guy who pals around with terrorists sitting at the desk in the oval office.

Wow.

The POW card is getting a bit tattered from being played so much. McCain’s military service is impressive and obviously above any criticism. It has never been nor will it ever be an issue in this campaign.

It’s his attempts to portray himself a regular guy when he lives the extravagant lifestyle of a very rich person that is worthy of mockery.

Dave Rywall on August 26, 2008 at 4:26 PM

Between the liberal fix moderator and Joe Biden, Pawlenty will be eaten alive in debates, the liberal media will then negate any gains McCain may make against Obama just like the liberal media did with Dan Quayle.

Romney as compared with Biden is not only a good match but evangelicals will run from the abortionator Biden so fast even a Mormon might look good to them, not to mention Romney might just bring out Conservatives to participate if the opportunity to see Biden get his comeuppance presents itself.

How is it when a man who serviced his time to his country and then through his own merits owns a few houses, didn’t take hand outs or bail outs to get them and is ridiculed for it? This to me is wrong. This should be an example, not seen as a fault. I thought that is what the AMERICAN dream is about.

This entire house thing is stupid. It should have no bearing on his VP pick. McCain’s numbers continue to improve as the Dems keep counting houses. Reagan had no supreme court justices. Also Obama will have Reid and Pelosi. Obama will be able to get 60 votes on all his legislation.

There are 4 conservatives on the supreme court if Obama is elected there will be a liberal court forever.

Obama also wants to stop any border construction and tear down the fence because of enviornmental concerns. McCain wants to build the fence.

The demographics are far different now than in 1980. The youth vote is very liberal. 4 years from now there will be less older voters and more liberal young voters.

The demographics make it completely different from 1980. It is going to be harder and harder to elect a republican with the demographic changes. 4 more years of open borders under Obama will just change the demographics more.

There are 6 justices over 70 on the supreme court. Do you want Obama replacing Scalia with some left wing extremist.

Carter didn’t pick any supreme court justices. Obama in his first four years would pick several.

Also how did the Clinton argument work out. Clinton was stronger in 96 than 92.

It is much easier to win with incumbency.

With the demographic changes McCain could be the last time to ever elect a republican.

At least if McCain wins we will have a conservative supreme court the rest of our lives to fight against a dem congress and future dem presidents.

If McCain loses the dems with the demographic changes will own the three branches forever.

McCain campaign is not hitting Obama on Rezko in the right ways.

Obama bought that strip of land from Rezko while he was under federal investigation for influence peddling. Fitzgerald who the dems loved at the time was investigating Rezko. Two weeks after it was reported he was under federal investigation Obama buys a strip of land from Rezko.

The 1/6th strip of land sale from Rezko was doing Obama a big favor because it devalued the rest of the lot.

Obama then on Good Morning America two years later on January 23, 2008 said no one could have known there were any problems with Rezko.

Obama was lying on GMA he had earlier admitted he knew about the federal investigation on Rezko for influence peddling.

Obama then this march admitted he had also called Rezko that previous March about Rezko illegally having a minority front contractor to get jobs at an airport.

So Obama lied on CBS and GMA in the height of the dem primaries before South Carolina saying there was on inkling of trouble for rezko and no sign of any problems.

Dems love the jingling of the keys for McCain. Mabye in St Paul there should be buttons how I didn’t buy land for my home from someone under federal investigation.

How about buttons about how Michelle Obama said the $600 rebate checks would be good for earrings.

MB4:

Who are you to decide what McCain’s limit is on anything?

You have said that all McCain did was get shot down and beat up. That sounds exactly like the kind of offhand, anti military crap we hear from the left every day. It seems you only respect a man’s service if he is your mirror image.

McCain did a lot more than get shot down and get beat up. He was fighting for his country at a time when a lot of other people were burning flags. And the getting shot down part is something that happens even to good pilots, if they are in a war zone.

So, now that we have decided being rich is a bad thing, I guess that not only cuts out Romney, it would in retrospect cut out Ronald Reagan. He was not exactly a pauper when he ran for president.

You just don’t want McCain to win because of the issue of immigration.

Terrye on August 26, 2008 at 4:48 PM

McCain is becoming a broken record on his P.O.W. status, much the same way Kerry was during 2004 with his military record, and the way Guiliani is now with 9/11.

Between that, and the “my friends” quip, I’m going insane.

To MB4:

McCain never brings up the fact that his sons are in the military. His 19 year old son just returned from Iraq.

Obama’s campaign admitted they are planning the early part of October around Biden’s son deployment to milk it for all its worth.

McCain refuses to use his sons service. When McCain was in Iraq and taking hits for a visit he didn’t bring up the fact he had lunch with his son there.

McCain has to live with those injuries the rest of his life.

McCain can’t lift up his arms to comb his hair. McCain can’t play golf in Hawaii like Obama. McCain can’t go bodysurfing like Obama. McCain can’t play basketball like Obama.

McCain was left disabled because of those injuries.

Enough already. McCain should be angry. Obama called McCain elitist because his father was an admiral.

McCain wasn’t rich growing up or was his admiral father. They moved all over the country from rental home to rental home.

ryandan on August 26, 2008 at 4:53 PM

Obama made $4M last year and just got back from a vacation on a private beach in Hawaii. His wife makes $370k a year at a hospital.

Kerry married uber rich. The Clintons are millionaires. The Kennedy clan is uber rich. Who the hell cares about their income? If Romney joins the ticket he brings his billions raised the American way to the mix. Nothing wrong with that. Obama is in no position to complain about wealth.

cannonball on August 26, 2008 at 4:53 PM

Gotta agree with the comment about Rezko.

McCain’s answer shoulda been “yeah we have some houses, but Cindy bought them with her own money, not with the help of a CONVICTED FELON like Tony Rezko”

YellowDawg on August 26, 2008 at 4:54 PM

McCain was probably caught off-guard by the original question about the houses. He needs to look into the issue, then clearly state (to anyone who asks) how many houses HE owns, and how many Cindy owns, and point out that Cindy’s relatives are living in some of them, and all the charity work that Cindy does. There’s nothing wrong with being rich if you share the wealth!

Then, as others have suggested here, state that all houses were bought legally, without any help from convicted felons!

Maybe a little ad about how much money Obama made from “Dreams From My Father” glorifying his African family, and how little he has helped them (compared to the McCains adopting a handicapped girl from Bangladesh) could defuse this for good.

They are trying to put the POW line to the same level as the Rudy 9/11 line. It’s not the same thing, and it won’t work. One was used repeatedly in interviews and the primary debates, the other is used as a defense mechanism. You can say McCain is unfair to use it in a defense, yet you can’t say it’s mockable to the degree the Rudy meme was.

DanStark on August 26, 2008 at 4:56 PM

When I said that, the guards, who were all in the room—about 10 of them—really laid into me. They bounced me from pillar to post, kicking and laughing and scratching. After a few hours of that, ropes were put on me and I sat that night bound with ropes. Then I was taken to a small room. For punishment they would almost always take you to another room where you didn’t have a mosquito net or a bed or any clothes. For the next four days, I was beaten every two to three hours by different guards. My left arm was broken again and my ribs were cracked.

http://www.usnews.com/articles/news/2008/01/28/john-mccain-prisoner-of-war-a-first-person-account.html?PageNr=7

“The Rabbit” and the others worked on Dick Stratton very hard. He’s got huge rope scars on his arms where they were infected. They really wrung him out, because they were going to get a confession that he had bombed Hanoi—this was to be living proof. They also peeled his thumbnails back and burned him with cigarettes.

Ernie was a civilian pilot who was shot down over Laos. He had just come from 31/2 years’ living in a bamboo cage in the jungle with his feet in stocks, and an iron collar around his neck with a rope tied to it. He had nearly lost use of his legs. He escaped three times, and after the third time he was buried in the ground up to his neck.

Give it a shot, you won’t have a problem not talking about it so much, right after.

Speakup on August 26, 2008 at 4:56 PM

I think the house meme came be overcome. It is inherently stupid, and I don’t think it actually resonates that well in the first place with a population that is smarter than we give them credit for. Just because the pundits won’t shut up about it and just because Obama is running ads doesn’t mean that it is actually effective.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but hasn’t McCain GAINED in most polls since the houses gaffe?

DaveS on August 26, 2008 at 4:57 PM

McCain didn’t have the televison crews televise his son’s return from Iraq or his sons deployment for Iraq. McCain’s 19 year old son is a marine who was on the front lines in anbar. He found out his father won New Hampshire by digging himself out of a ditch.

The Obama campaign admitted they will make a huge event out of Biden’s son going to Iraq. It is scheduled for October 3 the day after the vice president debate. That is all you will hear about.

McCain would never use his sons service to milk it for publicity.

McCain has shown honor not using his sons service while the Obama campaign says they will milk Biden’s son’s service for all its worth.

If he doesn’t select Mitt because Mitt owns several properties, then that will really p me off.

Wealth is to be celebrated. That means someone got an education of some sort, applied that knowledge to make something of themselves, and reap the rewards of risk and hard work. There is something wrong with this?

cjs1943 on August 26, 2008 at 4:59 PM

If someone has a link to a list of the “McCain family residences,” please provide it.

McCain has nobody to blame but himself for this meme. That said, given the numbers–and more important, given the various owners, interests, and uses of the residences–I can somewhat understand McCain’s initially fumbling the question. Especially given that McCain uses only three of them. I fault his campaign for not IMMMEDIATELY compiling and releasing a list of the residences, the legal title owners, and the users of each residence. McCain could have had the press jeering at him about three residences and, instead, he’s being crucified for eight. Every time I think the idiots in his campaign know what they’re doing, they screw up bullsh*t like this.

Now, count along. (1) McCain uses a DC residence, which his wife (or more likely her revocable trust) owns. I’m sure that many longtime members of Congress own a residence in DC. At a minimum, O is renting a place because he sure ain’t flying home to Chicago every night. (2) McCain uses an AZ residence where Cindy and their youngest daughter live. Cindy (or more likely her revocable trust) owns that residence. McCain needs to maintain a residence in his home state. Only Rep. Wexler (D-FL) has been trying to avoid that requirement. (3) McCain uses a vacation home in Sedona, which Cindy (or more likely her revocable trust) owns. So far as I know, those are the only homes in which McCain resides.

Now, (4) Cindy, her revocable trust, an irrevocable trust she created, or a trust created under her parents’ estate plan owns an AZ condo in which Cindy’s aunt resides. So McCain is to be bludgeoned because Cindy decided to provide a condo to an elderly relative? (5) Cindy, her revocable trust, an irrevocable trust she created, or a trust created under her parents’ estate plan owns another AZ condo in which their adult daughter lives. So McCain is to be bludgeoned because they decided to provide for a young adult daughter? What wealthy couple wouldn’t? (6) Cindy, her revocable trust, an irrevocable trust she created, or a trust created under her parents’ estate plan owns a condo in La Jolla, CA. I believe Cindy purchased it when she lived there temporarily while rehabbing from a stroke. If you have the dough, why not buy rather than rent? I’ll bet she’s holding on to it because the market is in the crapper. Anyway, are she and McCain breaking bread in that residence?

I don’t know anything about (7) and (8). But from the six I know about, I see that he uses only three, while he’s taking a beating for three others that really have nothing to do with him or this meme that his campaign has allowed to get out of control. Morons.

Anyone else?

The Big Old Dog:

He probably has a Quotianary. I have one of those things and it is full of all kinds of quotes about just about everything. Comes in handy when you can’t think of anything original to say.

Just kiddin.

Really? hmmm. Other than the fact that McCain is the antiChrist what could it be???

Terrye on August 26, 2008 at 5:01 PM

Ohh please if you can’t debate Joe Biden who was wrong on every single foreign policy issue he has ever spoken on, you should not fit to run a used Hugo dealership, never mind the country.

Borislav on August 26, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Do not underestimate Joe Biden unless you have a desire to lose.
He’s a liberal it doesn’t matter if he’s wrong, he only has to twist the facts and lie well and Biden is damn good at that.

ryandan: great post. I bet none of Obama’s supporters who were so impressed by his basketball skills stopped to think that McCain’s physically unable to play basketball due to his POW injuries.

Yossarian on August 26, 2008 at 5:04 PM

RoPa:

lie number one: McCain did not conspire with anyone on the Keating issue and was in fact cleared.

I think the thing that is interesting, is that when Tom Delay {who hates McCain} was indicted his supporters just assumed it was all political. And it may have been, some of the charges have already been reduced or thrown out. But when McCain was even remotely involved in something for which he was ultimately cleared a lot of those same people will just assume McCain is a crook, whatever the truth might be.

Are you a Paulbot? If so, that explains a lot.

Michelle Malkin is a disgruntled nigresslike azn bitch who spends her time “exposing” the liberal media and sucking off fat, white conservatives in exchange for an undeserved syndication like the good AIDS-ridden Thai whore she is. Like Ann Coulter, she is an IRL troll as well. She is known for her ability to queef ping-pong balls.

McCain does not own any houses. His wife does. Some of them are investment properties, and some are homes lived in by family members.

Terrye on August 26, 2008 at 5:09 PM

Good answer by McCain. Even if people think he’s pimping the POW thing, you still have to like his demeanor. The house meme is bogus, it’s going no where. If the house meme is the thing that stops a Romney VP pick, McCain has a lot more problems than houses or picking a VP.

Romney just a few minutes ago on FOX with Cavuto answered the house number question, saying, “I have one less than John Kerry.”

Disturb the Universe on August 26, 2008 at 5:19 PM

Excellent! With Romney out, McCain will be able to win.

Romney needs to go back home and rest up.

Maybe if Obama were more successful and had more houses he could give one to his poor brother George who lives in a shack in Kenya.

Disturb the Universe on August 26, 2008 at 5:23 PM

Cavuto had Mitt on and Mitt said he was asked today how many homes he had and Mitt replied, “One less than John Kerry and it didn’t seem to bother Dems in 04.”

Since socialists took over the Media and the Democrat Party.

TheBigOldDog on August 26, 2008 at 5:26 PM

I must have missed it – was wealth an issue on the Kerry – Edwards ticket?

stenwin77 on August 26, 2008 at 5:27 PM

This is beyond ridiculous. Now the GOP is going to let the democrats pull the “yeah, but you’re richer” game?

Here’s an idea. McCain has 7 homes. Together he and Romney have 12. So what.

Heck, let’s go one step further. Let’s have a square footage race – dems vs. reps.

We can begin with John Edwards 26,000 sq ft home, and move on to Gores mansion, Obama’s, etc.

I can not believe the GOP is going to permit wealth and prosperity to become a bad thing, especially after McCains “I want everyone to be rich” comment at Saddleback.

Hell, even JFK flaunted his wealth and status. People strive everyday to prosper, and hope to one day be wealthy.

Virginia Shanahan on August 26, 2008 at 5:32 PM

Well, for sure this is why the country is in such dire shape. People are selected for political reasons, not preparation or ability or experience in key areas.

For once, I’d like to see a pick for skill and ability at solving problems and leadership thought,

That would be Romney. Just in case he’s needed.

Disturb the Universe on August 26, 2008 at 5:23 PM

All Obama would have to do is send his brother 12 dollars a year and he would have twice as much money to get by on.

I don’t understand the bias against Romney. Pawlenty brings nothing useful to the table. A long time lawyer and politician? What value does that provide? Romney brings true economic understanding as well as legitimate business leadership and success. We need a Veep that can fill in the voids of McCain’s resume. Pawlenty is a nice guy, but he doesn’t do anything for the party.

cannonball on August 26, 2008 at 5:40 PM

Oh no, the richest ever. Who cares? What’s richness got to do with it? Kerry anyone? If McCain gives up on Romney just because of that, then he deserved to get f’ed in the a.

Seixon on August 26, 2008 at 5:43 PM

I asked Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow if the Romney name would help in the industrial state once governed by his dad, she turned the question to Romney’s wealth. She even added up the number of houses Romney and McCain have, coming to a total of 12.

Why on earth should I care what flipping Democrat Senator spins? Wasn’t it just yesterday that Hot Air posted a poll which showed that a McCain/Romney ticket beats Obama/Biden in Michigan?

thecountofincognito on August 26, 2008 at 5:48 PM

Ha! Perhaps it’s not a good idea to mention houses, Sen. Stabenow, since your husband is involved with houses of prostitution:

In 2003, Stabenow married Tom Athans, now the executive vice president of Air America…On April 2, 2008, the Detroit Free Press reported that Athans had been implicated in a prostitution sting

Question: If McCain or Romney had only one home each versus their current multiple home status, would that one home make either of them more qualified to be president and vice president?

My kitty says:

OH! I know the answer to that rhetorical question!

Answer: I think not. Number of homes has nothing to do with qualifications for running the country. Get off of it already. This is a time wasting distraction planted by the Obamanation. McCain should know better than to fall for this stuff. The less we talk about this the more time we can spend investigating what crap Obama has been up to lately and put the criticism back on him.
