Hope and change: McCain leads by two in Gallup, Obama down three days in a row in Rasmussen; Update: Polls are underestimating him, insists Pelosi

Joementum!

It’s official: Barack Obama has received no bounce in voter support out of his selection of Sen. Joe Biden to be his vice presidential running mate.

Gallup Poll Daily tracking from Aug. 23-25, the first three-day period falling entirely after Obama’s Saturday morning vice presidential announcement, shows 46% of national registered voters backing John McCain and 44% supporting Obama, not appreciably different from the previous week’s standing for both candidates. This is the first time since Obama clinched the nomination in early June, though, that McCain has held any kind of advantage over Obama in Gallup Poll Daily tracking.

Meanwhile, the Freepers are passing the new Rasmussen around as evidence that the convention’s a bust because it includes data collected last night. Eh. It’s a three-day rolling average and Michelle O’s speech aired late enough that surely they didn’t bother polling the eastern half of the country afterwards. If she did as well with the public as she did with pundits (even conservatives) we should see be a bump tomorrow. Believe it or not, spouse speeches do matter.

But in the meantime, consider the dull thud of the Biden pick confirmed:

Obama is supported by 78% of Democrats while McCain gets the vote from 85% of Republicans. The GOP hopeful also has a slight advantage among unaffiliated voters…

Today’s results are the first based entirely upon interviews conducted since Joe Biden was named to be Obama’s running mate.

Obama’s support has declined in each of the last three individual nights of polling. This may be either statistical noise or a reaction to the selection of Biden. If it’s the latter, it probably has less to do with Biden than Hillary Clinton. Forty-seven percent (47%) of Democratic women say Clinton should have been picked and 21% of them say they’ll vote for McCain.

Here’s Carville on CNN last night arguing that day one was, in fact, a big ol’ bust. This is a dream come true for Hillary, no? She gets her big moment tonight with two major national polls pointing squarely at the idea that she should have been named VP and that she, perhaps, alone can deliver the election to the Dems by rallying the PUMAs. Exit quotation: “She can do it, but that doesn’t mean we have to do it.”

Update: Madam Speaker spins like a gyroscope. Link via Ed who wonders what her logic could possibly be. A reverse Bradley effect? A late surge among young voters? Wishful thinking sparked by looming disaster in an otherwise gimme election?

Nope. Sample error!

The speaker said Obama and the other Democratic presidential candidates “have attracted millions of more voters — first-voters voters and many more voters who haven’t voted in a long time.

“Many of them are not even reachable by these pollsters,” Pelosi said. “These are polls of likely voters. Likely voters are people who have voted in the last two elections, and they are likely to vote again. They are not the universe of people who will vote on Nov. 4.”…

“We will own the ground Election Day,” she said.

If she did as well with the public as she did with pundits (even conservatives) we should see be a bump tomorrow.

Even conservative pundits have been taken in by the Obamas and the political correctness of the moment. There are still lots of those pundits who call Obama a “great speaker” or “electrifying” – which any cursory view of his speeches would quickly put an end to. The public is past the pundits on this one.

Barry better break out his tire gague to check and make sure the “bounce” has enough air not to “dip”….

It’s a long way down for Barack Obama. It’s our job to make sure he doesn’t just lose the election, but that his career on the national stage is over, his credibility lost.

indythinker on August 26, 2008 at 1:25 PM

Don’t pop the champagne yet. We have two months yet to go, and if the Dem Convention doesn’t inspire much ‘bounce’ for Obama, the Dems will open up the BIG mud cannons, and it will get pretty nasty pretty quick. Desperate times, desperate tactics. Look for events to occur during the Republican Convention which will attempt to cancel out any McCain ‘bounce’.

Get ready. The Dems are going to go negative fast and hard.

Obviously this poll is racist and bitter and is a distraction that does nothing for Michelle’s children. And Republicans are mean and evil and engage in smear tactics unlike the Democrats who are good and pure and never say a mean word about their horrible Neanderthal opponents.

Meh, it’s still Obama’s to lose. McCain needs to get as many people involved with his campaign as possible. He needs to send people like Newt and Huckabee to campaign for him. Obama talks more about the right things(community, social capital, innovation, unity, etc), but has the wrong prescription. McCain needs to hijack that and he isn’t.

It really drives me nuts when people go on and on and on about what a “great speaker” “electrifying orator” and “soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo eloquent” he is.

He isn’t.

He says nothing of substance. Take him off script and he melts into a puddle of um’s, ah’s, and I-I-I-I’s. That does not a “great speaker” make.

Its all downhill from here. Without a bounce from the convention, and a sizable one at that, McCain will start to pull in front, this of course is dependent on him choosing a proper running mate that won’t undo all the goodwill in the base built up over the last month.

I keep watching some of these pundits in utter disbelief. … But, I guess they might call anyone who gets the stage at a rock concert a “great speaker”, too?

NoDonkey on August 26, 2008 at 1:36 PM

Oh McCain is going to go down, rest assured. McCain’s campaign is expecting a 15 point drop, offering historical analysis for comparison. I expect 5 to 10 (at most) bounce by Obama after his speech. Things will probably look worse when Bush speaks at the Republican convention (which will probably take their campaign down to the predicted 15 points), then maybe a more even playing field again after McCain does his thing.

Hopefully the Republican convention is full of lights and explosions, and wows the pants off the public (An upside, it will probably turn that 85% support from Republicans to more into the 90% territory). The best thing that could happen for the Republicans is for some HRC chaos at the Democratic Convention to happen, yet I doubt it, sad face.

Whomever in Senator Obama’s campaign thought selecting Senator Biden would be a boost in Obama’s poll numbers must be an idiot. Hopefully, with this golden opportunity, whomever Senator McCain selects will assure all conservatives once and for all that McCain is the better choice for President than Obama.

Morgan on August 26, 2008 at 1:37 PM

I’d still expect Obama to get some sort of bounce out of Thursday’s speech, which may or may not be mitigated by McCain picking his VP the following day. Doesn’t mean all that much either way, because whatever changes in the polls either convention creates will be superseded later on by their performances at the three national debates, which is really when the bulk of the public starts paying attention (though McCain can grab the football fans next week, since his speech will start after the conclusion of the NFL regular season opener between the Giants and Redskins. Eli Manning beats Al Gore as the lead-in for the acceptance speech any day of the week, and if you have to watch a Washington-based Clinton before McCain talks, better it be Clinton Portis than Bill or Hillary).

I know that this is completely anecdotal, but my wife converted last night. After TOTALLY being in the tank for Obama since those early primary wins over Clinton, and I mean totally in the tank, she was absolutely disgusted with Michelle’s brother 45 minute speech, Michelle’s speech and then the over the top video of Barack beamed onto the podium. And what is incredible she like Michelle before because she was a tough lady. She agreed with the analyst’s that Michelle needed to connect with the women over 40 – she was not moved by the constant “you see”’s. That’s talking down, you see?

This is a canary in a mine moment. I just knew it was going to be a tough election cycle with my spouse (who is proudly independent) where this time we would be polar opposites. I guess I saw the bullshit earlier and the “over the top” bias displayed by the print, cable and major tv networks. Journalism school really needs to take a step backward and reclaim their profession. This is where they really interfered with an election that was all but won for the democrats for obvious reasons after 2 Bush terms.

It’s a little early to get too excited about these polling numbers. On the other hand, the Hillary campaign must be loving it. She’s not out of the running yet. Remember, the Democrats use that ludicrous “Super Delegate” system.

Why they even have a primary is beyond me. Seems like a total waste of money that can go to pork. The delegates aren’t committed and can still change their minds at the last moment. Of course if they vote against the will of the people, that will really disenfranchise the voters.

Must see TV indeed.

A house of cards, built from a deck of Jokers, collapses.

Excellent. I love it.

Think she came back to her dressing room and there was a bouquet of American flags with the note:

“Kindest Michelle-

We appreciate you repeatedly pretending how much you love this rotten stinkhole of capitalist fascism tonight. It is all in the interest of a greater good. Please find this arrangement of American flags to ignite, wear as an undergarment, step on or soil in the manner of your choice. All the smiling you we able to manage was an unexpected and welcomed touch. I hope you are not sore tomorrow as a result!

Yours,
Comrade H. Dean”

Obama’s new campaign song?

Hey DEMS you can still change your mind! It’s not too late.

Hillary should challenge Obama during Roll-Call.

He did get a bounce, it was just down. OK, I guess you can’t really call that a bounce, can you?

Maybe this is the kind of “change” we’ve been hearing so much about- up is down, down is up. Infanticide is compassionate, having a baby is punishment…

By a man’s finger-nails, by his coat-sleeve, by his boots, by his trouser-knees, by the callosities of his forefinger and thumb, by his expression, by his shirt-cuff – by each of these things a man’s calling is plainly revealed. That all united should fail to enlighten the competent inquirer in any case is almost inconceivable.

Hopefully the Republican convention is full of lights and explosions, and wows the pants off the public

I don’t know, I think that that monstrous set, all of the MTV-like megatrons and sound effects takes away from the seriousness of what is going on. I’ve never supported Obama, but I consider myself an independent voter, and I’m definitely turned off by the excessive show biz quality of this convention.

It seems more like an awards show than a convention.

Of the many things we have to blame Hillary for perhaps the worst of them is that we now think a person’s spouse is in some way qualified to be in politics.

Hillary’s sole qualification for being a senator was that she may have at one time slept with a president (this is not at all a given). She had even less qualification for being a New Yorker but we in the South consider this our revenge for Sherman’s march to the sea. Frankly, I think we got the better of that one. And no, we won’t give you a do-over.
