Catholic House Republicans respond to Pelosi’s abortion lies

On Sunday, Nancy Pelosi told several lies about the Catholic Church’s teaching and historical perspective on abortion and the fundamental sanctity of human life throughout its development. Ten House Republicans have responded respectfully but forcefully to refute Pelosi’s deliberate deceptions:
Dear Speaker Pelosi,
On the Sunday, August 24th, broadcast of NBC’s Meet the Press, you stated “as an ardent, practicing Catholic, [abortion] is an issue that I have studied for a long time.” As fellow Catholics and legislators, we wish you would have made a more honest effort to lay out the authentic position of the Church on this core moral issue before attempting to address it with authority.
Your subsequent remarks mangle Catholic Church doctrine regarding the inherent sanctity and dignity of human life; therefore, we are compelled to refute your error.
In the interview, Tom Brokaw reminded you that the Church professes the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. As stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Since it must be treated from conception as a person, the embryo must be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed, as far as possible, like any other human being” (2274).
To this, you responded, “I understand. And this is like maybe 50 years or something like that. So again, over the history of the Church, this is an issue of controversy.” Unfortunately, your statement demonstrates a lack of understanding of Catholic teaching and belief regarding abortion.
From the Apostles of the first century to Pope John Paul the Great “the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law” (Catechism 2271).
Thus, your erroneous claim about the history of the Church’s opposition to abortion is false and denigrates our common Faith. For example, during the reign of Pope Innocent XI in 1679, the Church unequivocally stated it is an error for Catholics to believe fetuses do not have a soul; and confirmed the teaching that abortion constitutes homicide.
To reduce the scandal and consternation caused amongst the faithful by your remarks, we necessarily write you to correct the public record and affirm the Church’s actual and historical teaching that defends the sanctity of human life. We hope that you will rectify your errant claims and apologize for misrepresenting the Church’s doctrine and misleading fellow Catholics.
Respectfully,
Hon. Thaddeus G. McCotter (MI)
Hon. Steve Chabot (OH)
Hon. Virginia Foxx (NC)
Hon. Phil Gingrey (GA)
Hon. Peter King (NY)
Hon. Steve King (IA)
Hon. Daniel Lungren (CA)
Hon. Devin Nunes (CA)
Hon. John Sullivan (OK)
Hon. Patrick Tiberi (OH)
This list may grow; one source says that John Boehner, the House Minority Leader, has already added his signature. As more join this list, I’ll update this post with the additions.

Wait a minute, I thought we were all in favor of separation of church and state. I guess Catholics just can’t pass up an opportunity to condemn or damn someone to hell. . . especially if it is a Catholic.
Again I ask where does the Catholic Church stand on capital punishment? Is there going to be a strongly worded letter of the ‘good’ Catholics concerning support for such a practice that the Catholic Church unequivocally condemns?
No, not likely, it’s just fun to point fingers at other people while ignoring your own flaws. Oh what fun:) Pelosi’s going to hell. . . Pelosi’s going to hell. . . isn’t this fun.

The writers are ignoring a lot of Catholic church history. Abortion has not always been equated with murder in church teachings, and abortions were accepted, at various points, for fetuses as old as 116 days after conception. Either the writers of this letter don’t know what they are talking about, or are intentionally misleading their readers.

Every single time Nancy Pelosi opens her mouth, something so grandiosely stupid comes flying out that, in terms of its sheer stupidity, it almost borders somewhere between magnificence and majesty.
It is like for one to imagine the dumbest, most moronic thing anyone could possibly say or do, and Nancy Pelosi will seek with the insane out of control zeal of one being on a quest of sheer epic proportion to outdo it.
It leads one to honestly ask how someone of this caliber of intelligence, which starts at a range below -0, was able to stumble and bumble her way just through ordinary life, much less get herself elected to Congress.
It also leads one to seriously question whether the people who actually voted her into office, and continue to vote to keep her there, are even remotely able with their obviously limited cranial capacity to navigate themselves across a busy city street, much less they should even be allowed to walk the street to begin with.
pilamaye on August 26, 2008 at 2:16 PM
I guess you never bother reading the responses to your rants.
Once more into the fray.
How does a desire to excommunicate someone who violates basic Church doctrine violate Church and State boundaries?
This was answered the last time you asked. The Catholic Church accepts that sometimes capital punishment is necessary.
I see you are as ignorant of Church doctrine as you are of almost every other subject.
MarkTheGreat on August 26, 2008 at 2:17 PM

The abortion issue is one of murder, not whether or not the church thinks it is a sin. This confrontation brings the Church into a legal matter in which it does not belong.
But I guess since I am not a Catholic I’m going to hell anyway so why would Catholics care.

A CLARIFICATION FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE CHURCH
IN NORTHERN COLORADO
To Catholics of the Archdiocese of Denver:
(In part):
“Destruction of the embryo in the mother’s womb is a violation of the right to live which God has bestowed on this nascent life. To raise the question whether we are here concerned already with a human being or not is merely to confuse the issue. The simple fact is that God certainly intended to create a human being and that this nascent human being has been deliberately deprived of his life. And that is nothing but murder.”

The RCC teaches that life is to be respected from conception (Catechism of the Catholic Church #2271) to natural death – (CCC #2267, et seq). Natural death is seen as contrary to / in contrast with the death penalty, assisted suicide, euthanasia, cloning embryonic stem cell research as they are all viewed as not protecting human life. But where as inmates on death row have appeals and legal/court protections, the most defenseless of all do not have recourse other than those willing to be proactive for them.
I think for many the aborted child is “innocent” and through no fault of their own are being condemned to death whereas there was some fault of either commission or omission to be placed under a death sentence. I know that for myself this is a dichotomy I find difficult to reconcile, but if you’re pro-life you should be that regardless of the perceived innocence of the person or not. We’re getting into the “judge not, lest you be judged” area.

Seixon,
Being for abortion or against abortion should have nothing to do with whether the person believes in God. As pro-lifers, our arguments against abortion (should) rest entirely on reason and natural law, just as we don’t need to invoke God to argue that homicide is a cruel act of wrongdoing. Hence, there ARE atheists who are against abortion, even though they are in the minority.
So far, I have not read a passage from the Bible that specifically condemns abortion (if there is such a passage, someone please point it out to me), so it’s deceptive for the Left to portray our stance against abortion as faith-based.
P.S.
This goes for gay marriage also.
MedSchoolCatholic on August 26, 2008 at 2:49 PM
I must have missed the part where the Vatican said that natural abortion was OK. If we were to take the word as given above, shouldn’t Catholics in fact intervene to ensure that no miscarriages take place?
I refer to “Since it must be treated from conception as a person, the embryo must be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed, as far as possible, like any other human being” when I say that.

Well, whatever. While the Catholic church has always considered abortion as some kind of sin, the seriousness of that sin has been open to interpretation over the years, so the teaching has changed. As late as 140 years ago, the church did not consider abortion of an “unanimated” fetus to be the equivalent of murder.

Well, see that’s just the thing. Atheists have no reason to argue that a clump of cells are anything more than a clump of cells, while Catholics will argue that it’s a human being. Thus if it is just a clump of cells, not yet a human, there is no reason why one cannot get rid of it.
Also, what about the reasoning of not bringing kids into a world which does not want it? When you masturbate, you kill millions of potential human beings. So what?
Atheists know the dirty little secret that religious folks won’t admit: life isn’t precious. Life is easy to create, so easy in fact, that it’s become quite a problem for us, and will continue to do so into the future.
Just like with the death penalty, there are always good reasons to kill humans, or tiny clumps of cells. You can’t take “thou shalt not kill” literally and then execute someone for raping a kid. If you’re going to take it literally, you can’t go willy-nilly making exceptions. If you make exceptions for the death penalty, why not abortion?
Shorter version: atheists have no reason to view an embryo as anything other than an embryo, and as happens naturally, these embryos can be killed, and it doesn’t really matter.
There, now I’m off to get lynched by the rest of the Hot Air commenters. Have a nice day. :)
