Unity: First black president to skip second black president’s speech

posted at 10:29 pm on August 26, 2008 by Allahpundit

I don’t believe it for a minute; it’s simply too petulant, even for him, and too dangerous a signal to the PUMAs for party bigwigs to let him get away with it. But how unspeakably awesome is it that this is what the top of Drudge looks like as Her Majesty is taking the stage at the convention?

The exit question I never, ever thought I’d ask: We owe him one, don’t we?

Megyn Kelly just said that outside of the convention hall the disgruntled Hillary supporters said that if the call doesn’t go one for one, state by state, there will be hell to pay. Also, apparently, via Kelly, Hillary will not cut it short, as “that is not her job”.

Entelechy on August 26, 2008 at 10:32 PM

She also said that many of those Hillary supporters didn’t make it into the hall and are not happy. They are the ones with the “Vote for McCain” signs.

Entelechy on August 26, 2008 at 10:33 PM

Love the irony in the title. One’s not black and the other’s not president.

baldilocks on August 26, 2008 at 10:35 PM

Allah,

Isn’t the more important question, “Why Bill?”

I’m sure many on the Left will claim that the Clintons are selfish or are otherwise taking Obama’s nomination as a personal insult against their attempted political dynasty, but I think there is more to it. Bill obviously thinks Obama is a fake, and he showed no remorse for attacking the DNC’s new poster child with such claims during the primaries.

So, will Dean and Co. make sure the Clintons are punished for refusing to bow before the new hard-Left juggernaut, or is a Democratic Party without the Clintons too far away from the Center of politics to be a strong contender in national affairs?

Oh well, this is great drama, so I’ll enjoy it.

If someone made a a comedy movie of this, it would be panned as too unrealistic. “No political couple would ever really do this…”

Tonight’s going to be a great night for the dems. Montana’s governor gave a knock out speech. Yeah, it had a bunch of mischaraterizations, but it is a convention. Plus all the shots of Bill looking really happy and now Hillary’s speech… After a wasted night one, the bump in the polls starts tomorrow.

BadgerHawk on August 26, 2008 at 10:42 PM

I was always against impeaching him.

Me too, but mostly because I thought it would turn out to be a big waste of time and money, not because I thought he didn’t deserve it.

Skip the speech Bill. That arrogant little poseur stole your woman’s place in history. Don’t let him get away with disrespecting you.

I’m glad they got dirty. It lets McCain’s camp do the same.

I have to get up at 5:30 for work, but Clinton is speaking and I just can’t put down the beer. I love this time of year.

BadgerHawk on August 26, 2008 at 10:44 PM

I think all this media frenzy about possible controversy is nothing more than a hoax to drive more viewers to the convention broadcast. In the end, she’ll bow to The One and there will be no controversy.

Texas Rainmaker on August 26, 2008 at 10:47 PM

I am always entranced by Megyn Kelly. Not so much by Hillary. I heard the Crocodile Woman was not going to mention Comrade Pencil-Neck by name, but missed the first bit (had to clean up dog doo-doo). Has she endorsed (or even mentioned) him yet?

I often wonder why the Left loves Clinton. If success means: losing the House majority; getting impeached; failing to protect the United States from terrorist attacks at home and abroad, and letting many of the perpetrators go unpunished; failing to capture/kill Bin Laden due to lack of will vice opportunity; and getting caught in an affair, then I guess he’s your guy.

Send_Me on August 26, 2008 at 11:38 PM

The explanation from a Clinton insider was that Bill supposedly is still irate over the way he was painted as a racist following his post-South Carolina primary remarks. I actually believe this, since he’s acting in such a petulant way where a little Clinton fakery for a couple of hours Thursday night would go a long way towards maintaining his viability as a superstar within the party.

It’s still not in either Clintons’ best interest for Obama to win, because Hillary’s presidential hopes are then over forever and Bill’s chances of regaining his status as Alpha Male within the party are also finished. But he’s ignoring the Kennedy mantra of “Don’t Get Mad, Get Even” here to the point that even if Obama does lose, Bill’s making it so obvious he doesn’t want him to win that he’ll never win back the type of love he had from the party faithful prior to this year.

They loved him (and Hillary) because Republicans hated him (and Hillary), and their joy in seeing GOP leaders, pundits and radio talk show hosts get mad outweighed in their minds anything that actually was happening in Congress or elsewhere in the political world. It just took their own infatuation with electing the first African-American president to break the bonds of that love affair among at least half of the party’s core voters.

If I’m Bubba and asked about it, I say that I don’t want to be a distraction.

Karl on August 26, 2008 at 11:46 PM

CNN is digging deep trying to cover up the anxiety of the PUMA’s. They are now trying to replay the “Unity” theme. I think they have been shocked by what they have been hearing from delegates. It is hilarious.
If Bubba doesn’t attend BO’s speech CNN will never utter his name again…

d1carter on August 26, 2008 at 11:51 PM

CNN was shocked that their first interview after the speech was a Clinton delegate that was crying and said that BO did not speak to her. That her speech was presidential. Malveaux and Cooper were almost speechless. It was hilarious….

d1carter on August 26, 2008 at 11:55 PM

This is too much. Too much. Bill’s refusal to embrace Obama. What next? Bill campaigning with John McCain in swing states?

Karl beat me to it. I think Obama would be happy for Bill not to be there. Just imagine the cameras cutting away from The One to look around the crowd, and lighting on Bill’s furrowed brow and slight frown.

If ever there was a distraction Obama could do without, I’m guessing Bill’s presence is it. He can gain nothing by Bill being there…..the Dems are ticked off at him (both Barack & Hillary supporters, for different reasons) and it would make Obama sleep better to sweep Bill under the rug (which is surprisingly roomy under there, mainly because most people have been shunted under the bus.)

meep on August 27, 2008 at 5:22 AM

Reason number 12,458 as to why I HATE AND LOATHE Bill and Hill. The fact that Dims don’t see how destructive these 2 are demonstrates just how stooopid someone has to be to join that party. He’s the single biggest narcissist ever to walk the planet, and in time, he and his “wife” will destroy that party. Good riddance.

Gartrip on August 27, 2008 at 6:38 AM

It would not surprise me if Bill skipped it, or threatened to. He can be a real prick when he is pissed off. The Big Dog, still thinks that the Democratic party is his party.

I do believe that any lingering hopes B.O. had left of seeing his beloved Democratic Party become an unstoppable unified juggernaut that will carry him easily to victory in November just went singing down the drain. This whole convention chaos thing just keeps getting better and better.

pilamaye on August 27, 2008 at 7:21 AM

Clinton’s don’t want to lose their power in the party. HRC will do no more to support BO than this speech. It was just words, but Bill’s actions are the heart of the Clintons. I swore I saw HRC crossing her fingers behind her back during segments of the speech. BO’s defeat in November will mean the Clinton’s are still the power couple of the dem party.

jbh45 on August 27, 2008 at 8:00 AM

I hate to say it, but I really do like Bill Clinton. I was young (and stupid) when I first voted for him, and have since seen the light to become a strong Republican. But I still have a soft spot for him. I think its because Bill Clinton didn’t base his entire case on being President on the fact that he grew up poor. With the help of James Carville, he developed a actual message that was rooted in the principles developed by the Democratic Leadership Council, which is a pro-business group; hence, the passage of NAFTA. While Obama is definately (to use a phrase uttered by Hugh Hewitt) “anti-American Exceptionalism,” as opposed to anti-American, Bill Clinton was never anything but pro American Greatness.

RedSoxNation on August 27, 2008 at 9:11 AM

True, we owe Clinton for the balanced budgets and the pointless wars he dodged.

The balanced budget, proposed by a GOP Congress (before they mutated into Repiglicans), that Mr. Bill (Oh, noooo!) vetoed several times, before finally getting the increased spending that he wanted.

Pointless wars that he dodged? You mean like the war against Serbia, which like Iraq never attacked us? Oh wait, he didn’t dodge that one, did he?

Yeah, I know. Milosevic, genocide against Kosovars, blah, blah. Kosovars dead from Milosevic: Between 2000 and 4000, far below the “tens of thousands”. Kurds dead from Saddam: At least 100,000. If humanitarian concerns made the war over Kosovo not pointless, then the same is true for Iraq.

Bigfoot on August 27, 2008 at 9:11 AM

Let’s see…My Vikings are playing the Cowboys or I can watch this dillweed? Whatever! The Clinton’s just made Obama give both of them a big ole’ Monica!

sabbott on August 27, 2008 at 9:12 AM

Oooops, I left something out. “Tens of thousands” was Clinton’s claimed number of dead Kosovars, before he started bombing Serbia.

Bigfoot on August 27, 2008 at 9:13 AM

But they may never regain their place in the hearts of most of their favorite constituents. Obama has their allegiance now.

It don’t mean nothin. Traditionally on nomination night former presidents do not share the limelite with the new nominee.
