Awesomely awesome: Clinton asks crowd, why vote for a guy you agree with if he can’t get things done?

posted at 2:52 pm on August 26, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

Just an innocent hypothetical, totally unrelated to anything in the news about a disgruntled bloc trying to decide between an ineffectual neophyte with whose policies they agree and an effective veteran with crossover appeal.

And to think, Politico accused him this morning of not being over the primary.

Bill Clinton appeared to undermine Sen. Barack Obama again Tuesday.

The former president, speaking in Denver, posed a hypothetical question in which he seemed to suggest that that the Democratic Party was making a mistake in choosing Obama as its presidential nominee.

He said: “Suppose you’re a voter, and you’ve got candidate X and candidate Y. Candidate X agrees with you on everything, but you don’t think that candidate can deliver on anything at all. Candidate Y you agree with on about half the issues, but he can deliver. Which candidate are you going to vote for?”

Then, perhaps mindful of how his off-the-cuff remarks might be taken, Clinton added after a pause: “This has nothing to do with what’s going on now.”

Quoth a panicky Paul Begala when questioned by The Hill, repeating his point as if trying to convince himself, “He’s totally for Barack. He’s totally for Barack.” Exit question: What does the media do with this ahead of tonight’s speech? Bill’s gaffes earned instant saturation coverage during the primary, but that was back when covering them helped Obama. This one hurts him as a juicy subplot undermining the sincerity of Her Majesty’s speech tonight, which is precisely why, I’m guessing, it’ll be downplayed. Drudge has it buried in a crowd of other teasers at the top of the Report right now, making it safely ignorable by the press. Will he go nuclear by fronting it and force their hand? Or will he remain safely hip-deep in the tank? Stay tuned!

Are those Chicago Annenberg Challenge papers out yet? You know, the ones that detail the one and only executive job Obama ever held, where he wasted tens of millions of donated dollars and accomplished absolutely nothing?

Of course not, it’s about some other election, some other year in some other country.

Bill is slowly becoming a better ex-President.

I’ll go back to despising him once he’s campaigning for his wife’s 2012 run.

crazy_legs on August 26, 2008 at 3:08 PM

Actually, that’s why I’m voting for Obama over McCain. I’m afraid that McCain would manage to get the Carbon Cap and Trade bill through congress, using his old friends of course, and destroy out economy. I doubt that Obama could. I am convinced that McCain would get his Amnesty Bill through, and Obama couldn’t. I’m certain that McCain can’t get his drilling plan through congress, and with Iraq now demanding that our troops be out, all of our troops out of Iraq before the end of 2011, the war in Iraq is almost Moot.

So that leaves the Court, and I doubt that McCain is going to pick a rock ribbed Conservative, so that means that there is little difference in the two. Better to pick Obama, and accomplish less destruction of the nation, over McCain and complete destruction.

Count me among those who seldom go to Drudge’s website any more. Maybe he simply got caught up in the novelty of Obambi’s earlier months though that still makes me question Drudge quitting radio.

In light of his apparent support of Obambi, short term or not, the thought of Drudge Radio fielding call after phone call from an audience base having now completely opposite views would have been a quick downward spiral for his ratings and credibility.

No, I’m actually quite serious. Do you think McCain can get his carbon cap and trade bill through Congress? It’s a Democratically approved policy, which means that the Democrats would vote for it. So would many Republicans, out of Party unity right?

Do you think Obama could get it through? Our resistance, the Republicans, would make it tough, if we could turn several of the “Blue Dog” Democrats, we could block it in Congress, thus preventing the destruction of the economy.

In that scenario, victory for a Conservative Republican Principal, free market capitalism, doesn’t happen by electing a Republican for President.

Chakra, do you think we can fight a tax increase in the Congress? Do you think we can manage to keep the Republicans in line, and even convince enough Blue Dog Democrats like John Barrow to vote against a tax increase?

I think we can. However if McCain gets in, do you think we can stop Carbon Cap and Trade? I don’t. Party Unity and all that. Do you think we can stop Amnesty for Illegal Aliens? I don’t McCain’s signature legislation.

I think we can fight the battles if we lose the opener. I think we lost the war if we elect McCain. Higher taxes will happen if McCain is elected, because the Bush Tax Cuts will expire, and there is no way Reid and Pelosi are going to let them come to a vote. The taxes will go up with McCain in the White House, guaranteed.

He won’t have to sign it, it won’t matter. It will go up, and we’ll be running GHW Bush for his second term again. We can fight a Carter in four years, or defend a GHW Bush’s “No new taxes” pledge again.

Haah, haah. Gotta love that guy!

But I sort of agree with BJ’s point in a strange way: I was chastised earlier for my rather explicit thoughts on Oblahblah’s likely effectiveness, but it’s true, he’s unlikely to get anything done. So maybe it’s better to vote for a flaccid egomaniac than it is to vote for somebody with whom you disagree, and who might actually get some of what you disagree with done.

But the risk that Oblahblah will sign crappy legislation from a Democrap Congress (think fairness doctrine) I think out-weighs this concern.

mr.blacksheep on August 26, 2008 at 3:26 PM

FACT The Bush tax cuts are going to expire in 2010. So that means we have to get a tax cut bill through Congress with Reid and Pelosi in charge. What are the odds of that happening? How about No way in hell. If McCain is President, there is still no way our taxes aren’t going up. They will go up, when the tax cuts expire. We’ll get blamed for it by the press, and the average citizens who don’t pay enough attention to the details, and we Republicans will be blamed.

FACT. John McCain wants Carbon Cap and trade, which has been labeled by business leaders as detrimental to the economy, several having called it disastrous. Anyone here think McCain can’t get it through Congress?

These are FACTS, from McCain’s website, and the Tax Policy website. Opinion is mixed in, but here’s the deal folks, the truth follows fact like a trailer follows a truck.

I’m from Europe, and believe me: You DON’T want the government to completely take over health care. It doesn’t get more humane, only much more inefficient and expensive. It can bankrupt the nation within generations.
