Recreate 68? They’re on their way

Forty years ago, the nation looked on in horror as protestors and police tangled in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention — and drove voters to Richard Nixon. For some reason, some Democrats got nostalgic for this result and pledged to “Recreate ’68″. Tonight, they have succeeded in at least getting pepper-sprayed by the police after rioting at Denver’s Civic Center:
Riot police have forced a couple of hundred protesters out of Civic Center and then blocked them before they could reach the 16th Street Mall.
Police had the protesters surrounded between Court Street and Cleveland along 15th Street and moved up reinforcements, including an Aurora armored vehicle. They have made at least one arrest. …
Protesters and police had lined up across from one another in front of City and County Building about 7 p.m., the police wearing their full riot gear and holding batons, chanting “move back, move back.”
At least one protester was sprayed with pepper spray before the mass of marchers moved back across the park and were cut off by police behind the Sheraton.

And hey, this is just the first night! LGF has more information on this, including a correspondent who has gotten pepper-sprayed herself. An earlier attempt at starting trouble fizzled, despite the inclusion of Ward Churchill, apparently taking a night off from teaching the little Eichmanns in Colorado.
So far, the protesters have managed to recreate ’68 in at least one way … reminding the nation to vote Republican.

Man,these Denver cops are behaving way too well. Just a few weeks ago, we had the clip of a New York cop knocking the cr*p out of a bicyclist; apparently didn’t like the cut of his jib or something. Here we have dozens of cops with riot batons you could pacify a frat party with, surrounded by smelly hippies with the intellectual couth of Keith Olbermann in high dudgeon, and all we get is a pepper spraying? They’ve been encouraged to recreate what their various professors nostalgically view as their defining moment in the continuum of American history. Unfortunately, the phony “issues” they complain about lack the efficacy of some of the social struggles of the 60′s (and I’m not talking about the anti-war commies either!).
The biggest change from ’68 will be this; don’t look for busloads of union hardhats swooping in to deliver a good ole blue-collar beat-down on the neo-hippies. They’re too busy inside the convention buying and rubber-stamping the Oba-messiah…
But I do wonder whether we’ll see the police delivering wooden shampoos to the great unwashed on film this time around…

At the Chicago convention in ’68, for the first couple days the police were ordered not to react. The police got cursed at, spit at, and worse for two days, and the demonstrators got the impression that those were the permanent rules. Well, the rules got changed by Mayor Daley, and two days of police frustration got released in about an hour. It was like pulling the safety plug on a pressure cooker.

Like I said, it just isn’t the halcyon days of liberal rage any longer. They used to hitchhike across the country to get to their marches and sit-ins, sharing doobs and sleeping in roach-infested hostels. Now they charter air-conditioned tour buses and call momma once a day just to check in and make sure the VISA isn’t cancelled.
I think I’m going to cry over this nostalgia.
