Recreate 68? They’re on their way

posted at 10:35 pm on August 25, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Forty years ago, the nation looked on in horror as protestors and police tangled in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention — and drove voters to Richard Nixon.  For some reason, some Democrats got nostalgic for this result and pledged to “Recreate ’68″.  Tonight, they have succeeded in at least getting pepper-sprayed by the police after rioting at Denver’s Civic Center:

Riot police have forced a couple of hundred protesters out of Civic Center and then blocked them before they could reach the 16th Street Mall.

Police had the protesters surrounded between Court Street and Cleveland along 15th Street and moved up reinforcements, including an Aurora armored vehicle. They have made at least one arrest. …

Protesters and police had lined up across from one another in front of City and County Building about 7 p.m., the police wearing their full riot gear and holding batons, chanting “move back, move back.”

At least one protester was sprayed with pepper spray before the mass of marchers moved back across the park and were cut off by police behind the Sheraton.

Here’s the live video from the Denver Post:

And hey, this is just the first night! LGF has more information on this, including a correspondent who has gotten pepper-sprayed herself. An earlier attempt at starting trouble fizzled, despite the inclusion of Ward Churchill, apparently taking a night off from teaching the little Eichmanns in Colorado.

So far, the protesters have managed to recreate ’68 in at least one way … reminding the nation to vote Republican.

Blowback

… and two days of police frustration got released in about an hour. – RB

Wow, imagine gettin’ PAID to beat up hippies? Man, I’d do that for FREE!

Tony737 on August 25, 2008 at 11:53 PM

I would pay them just to be able to beat up hippies , if you hit them hard enough do joints fall out of them

On Charlie Rose, heard a great term I’d never heard before: “Conservagentsia” Something to aspire to.

anyone else lose sound?

DaveC on August 26, 2008 at 12:05 AM

Is it just me, or have these protesters gotten really wimpy over the years.

I was on the pro-life protest side of Operation Rescue in San Jose, CA in the 80′s when they shipped in leftist counterprotesters from San Francisco. Those lefties had as much body jewelry as kids today and it was long before that was in vogue, and looked like something out of Dante’s Hell. At least they looked evil.

Not anymore. Today’s leftists are so ssssssoooooo soft. Alex looks like he might have won the Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest. At least in 68 it was a REAL riot and the rioters’ had some blood spilled. I guess closing a Starbucks just doesn’t get the blood going as much as back then.

Note to City of Denver:
Resume enforcement of pot laws! I was born in ’69 so I missed out on the fun the first time around. Take away their bongs! I want to see what hippies look like when they’re really PO’d!

Oh please, as much as I hate to admit how old I am…I was in Chicago in ’68 and this is pathetic. You could smell the tear gas fumes for blocks on Michigan Avenue. There were thousands of National Guard and police everywhere. And the stupid Yippies in Lincoln Park were all stoned. And they pretty much tore up both parks. The police did get out of hand, but I think it was because they weren’t allowed to do anything at first, so the tension built and the dumb protesters got too bold.

At any rate, the is no 1968 Recreated…at least not yet.

I hope we get to hear how loud Jones can scream don’t taze me bro!

Nothing would please him more.

Alex Jones is a CIA agent leading a controlled opposition operation.

The really ironic part about Jones ranting and raving about Michelle’s book is that she wrote another book about people exactly like him. It’s called “Unhinged.”

JinxMcHue on August 26, 2008 at 1:02 AM

Why was this a good idea again?

That’s an easy one. The independents have forgotten who holds the chains of the Democrat Party… its important every now and then to let them see the sausage being made as it were.

Oh, that’s why it was a good idea for Conservatives to sit back with the popcorn in hand and watch, silently thinking encouragement for these idjits…

If you were asking why those involved might think it was a good idea?

Perhaps because they aren’t capable of recognizing good ideas? I’ve seen a lot of their plans and proposals; and I think this is a pretty accurate assessment of their abilities in this area. When was the last time this crowd had a halfway plausible or reasonable (much less good) idea?

Old George Carlin joke:

Carlin is at his doctor for a physical exam.

Doctor: Well, you’re getting a bit older… have you had any problem with your joints?

Carlin: Nooo… not a bit.

Sorry folks, this ain’t ’68. To begin with they’re missing some 80,000 people for the first night. There were 300,000 on Wednesday the big night. There’s no SDS and Yippies (How could anyone take them seriously). We’ve here VVAW and wannabes with some somnabulist droning on about MLK. Wanna see a Gitmo cell? they’ve mocked one up….less than impressed. Saw a handful of hippies with backpacks that must have been the excitement later tonight. Two dozen vs two thousand….pathetic.

Met a few Hillary diehards and verbally offered support. My flight in from Phoenix had many of her delegates but seeing Obama stymied on the first ballot doesn’t seem likely.

Got interviewed by DenverPost, it won’t print and photo’d with Channel 9 (TaRhonda a beauty) but it won’t air.

Trying to balance my week’s schedule with the goings on here, the call of hot springs and the chance to meet the Boss. AMUSE ME!

Go to hand it to Alex Jones, free advertisement is free advertisement. Gotta be worth another 3 or 4 book sales at least.

It’s not entertaining unless someone’s getting tazed or the cops go to “hats and bats”.

These bozos said they “learned from Seattle” and “had people with training”. Only thing I remember about these goofs from Seattle was some effeminant jerkweed screeching like a little girl “IT BURNS! IT BURNS!” while some hippy chick fruit fly dabbed at his eyes with a makeshift washcloth. So they “learned” what in Seattle? That pepper spray burns? That what they did there is the reason the Denver PD won’t hesitate a second to start busting heads if they try the same crap in Denver?

Wake me when Ward Churchill gets tazed or Medea Benjamin gets maced or vice-versa.

THAT’S good TV!

I would vote for Michelle giving that schmuck Jones a swift kick in the nards, but he’s probably already neutered and Michelle has too much class for that. As for the anarchy movement; they will never get anywhere until they get some strong leadership and guidance.

Alex Jones thinks MM is a criminal because she advanced arguments for positions he disagrees with. He shouldn’t scream so much. The louder he is, the more people will know what an idiot he is.

Good point. You remind me of an old saying about those who cannot raise the level of their argument, raise the volume.

SKYFOX on August 26, 2008 at 5:52 AM

Great story, Ed. ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN online as well as Drudge feel it is does not meet their journalistic standards. They do feel it important to tell me about Andy Dick not being charged with sexual battery and a two headed turtle somewhere in the South. Britney’s new hairdo is also seen as more worthy of coverage.

snaggletoothie on August 26, 2008 at 6:10 AM

My only regret is that they didn’t OC the hippies.

Did anyone see that picture Zombie had of Ward Churchill over at LGF? With his beret and sunglasses on? Is he asking people to call him ‘Commander’ too? I’d really love to hit that guy..just one time. What an annoying pretentious old SOB.

austinnelly on August 26, 2008 at 10:06 AM

I have to agree with those who think these protesters are too soft. At first glance I thought some of them had pepper spray but it turned out to be Axe Body Spray.

At least now that the Soviet Union is reforming we can bank on some badass Russians infiltrating these groups and bring back some good old thuggery.
