Panic: Obama and Hillary work to cut off roll call vote before things turn embarrassing

What was it I was saying earlier about her phony “lift every voice” enfranchisement rhetoric? Oh well. Nothing says unity and catharsis like a vote that has to be suspended halfway through lest the margin of victory not turn out the way The One has foreordained. Chicago politics fever — catch it!
Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama are working on a deal to give her some votes in the roll call for the Democratic presidential nomination, but quickly end the divided balloting in unanimous consent for Obama.
Democratic officials involved in the negotiations said Monday the idea is that at the start of the state-by-state vote for the presidential nomination Wednesday night, delegates would cast their votes for Clinton or Obama.
But the voting would be cut off after a couple of states, the officials said, perhaps ending with New York, when Clinton herself would call for unanimous backing for Obama from the convention floor. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity while the deal was being finalized.
This is Hillary’s dream come true, isn’t it? She gets to play the good soldier, ostensibly, even while her fanatic supporters strike fear in the hearts of Team Barry. But then, how good a soldier are you if you’re oh so casually reminding reporters that you got the same number of votes as the nominee did and politely declining to interfere with your delegates’ very “personal decision” by asking them to vote for the other guy? Be sure to follow that last link, too, and note the enthusiasm of the New York delegation when asked whether they’re ready to elect a president. Exit quotation: “I’m thoroughly disgusted with the Democratic Party… I believe the real magic of Barack Obama was his ability to turn lifelong Democrats like us into McCain supporters overnight.”

Deep in my heart, a little part of me wants Hillary to come out of this with the nomination. It won’t happen, but it’s something nice to dream about.

heh she is proving me right…she can be good cop or bad cop but her PUMAs will not let her try a middle road.
Hillary will make a judgement call by midnight on whether her having the PUMAs fall on their sword will hurt in 2012…if so she will do the minimum if not she will be a good politico operative.
sven10077 on August 25, 2008 at 4:57 PM
Watch Bill Clinton turn his assigned-topic speech (something about world security) back to what he wants to talk about – HIS ECONOMY !!
It will go something like, “you can’t have security in the world if the American economy is bad… this is how I-I-I-I did it…
This convention is going to be the best evah .
stenwin77 on August 25, 2008 at 4:57 PM
Does Team McCain actually think he’s going to be able to appeal to those disaffected voters without emphasizing some of his mavericky policies or actually changing some of his polices? He needs to show that he’s actually listening to them and not just trying to pick scaps across the aisle.
ninjapirate on August 25, 2008 at 4:57 PM
Whoa!
Obama is a bigger stooge than i thought he was.
Chakra Hammer on August 25, 2008 at 4:57 PM
They have to stop the roll call?
And this is supposed to convince disaffected Hillary supporters to support Obama?
If I were a Hillary supporter, I would be more convinced then ever that Hillary could win, if given the chance, and the party is bound and determined to not give her that chance.
That’s going to motivate me to stand in a long line to vote for Barry. NOT.

As things “turned ugly” Hillary Clinton appeared before MSNBC news cameras with a surprising “angelic glow”! This was soon, however, turned to horror as MSNBC hosts Keith Olberman and Chris Mathews, while interviewing Hillary, both on public TV ( and to the horror of viewers) each pulled down their trow…bend over and stuffed their heads up their asses…
The cameras then panned to a smiling Hillary who said she “completely supported the decision of the DNC convention in Denver…Muwhahahahahah!!!!!”
sabbott on August 25, 2008 at 4:59 PM
Dang, talk about the cliched “pimp slap“.
So let me understand this in all its messianic goodness:
Obama wants a roll call to stop after a couple of states b/c if he allows it to go all the way through, the facts are that Hillary would win. And Hillary doesnt want to just rip it out from under Obama b/c then she looks like the bad person in all this. Does that about sum it up?
“Backtracking, we can belive in!”

Here’s the thing: Hillary, as well as many, many logical people, realize that Obama will not win except with her on the ticket. BUT she does not want to be VP. How frustrating would it be for a VP to go 4-8 years behind an arrogant, affirmative-action, activist a**hole knowing that he is oblivious to all things that have a relationship to a CLUE?

Wineaholic on August 25, 2008 at 5:08 PM
First they establish a system to pick a nominee, then override it with superdelegates to makes sure the right candidate is selected. Then they only count half of MI and FL votes in the primaries (which if fully counted Hill would have won, right?) then they give them full voting rights in the name of unity at the convention. Then they will allow a roll call, but now will cut it off so it goes the way they want.
The pattern seems to be: “We’ll give you peasants a chance to vote the right way, and if you don’t, we’ll take over and make sure it gets done right, thank you very much.”

I think Senator Obama has a great idea, here. Very efficient. And I think we should use Senator Obama’s approach to democracy for the general Presidential election as well. We can stop counting the votes right after the states beginning with “A.” Alabama, Alaska, Arizona & Arkansas.

Don’t the states usually jocky for position by “passing” to try to be the state that puts the candidate over the top?
Why isn’t the MSM all over this story?
I guess that last question shoots a hole in the maxim about there being no such thing as a stupid question.

The way the Convention looks like a patriotic light show I think you should have titled this “Panic at the Disco.”

What a grand manipulator.
Rightwingsparkle on August 25, 2008 at 5:15 PM
We have become such an impatient society. The Democratic primary was very close and probably should have gone to the convention. But the media can’t stand the unpredictable, everything has to be staged. If the Democratic Party hadn’t have been so impatient and eager to get a nominee, the Democratic voters would have felt the process played out itself out fairly and not hold such bitterness. Now everything seems so contrived.

It would have appeared very gracious and unifying if it had been done as a surprise. Now that it’s out and being discussed, the whole “they’re trying to cut a deal” makes the roll-call interruption just venal premeditated drama. The only people stupid enough to buy it are already stupid enough to support Obama, so what does it solve?

Yeah- this bit about there being friction between Clinton and Obama supporters is all just another Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. The polls showing a significant number of Clinton supporters flipping to McCain? DIEBOLD. The quotes from disaffected Clinton supporters? ROVE.
Obama went from a commanding lead in the polls to a statistical dead heat. He’s an empty suit who’s greatest accomplishments consist of a speech and two books written about his most favorite subject- himself.
McCain is the average looking girl next door with a steady job and dreams of a house in the suburbs. Obama is the hot, easy stripper with big fake knockers but little between the ears. Sure, the latter might be fun for a few initial dates, but when it comes time to pick a wife, most will sober up and pick the former.
