New Obama ad: Why is McCain trying to distract us with that unrepentant terrorist I’m friends with?

Mark Halperin has the clip, which is ironic since he described Ayers with the same polite euphemism yesterday that The One’s ad team uses here (George Will thankfully was there to correct him). Conventional political wisdom demands a forceful response to a forceful attack, but even so, I can’t quite believe Obama would throw fuel on the Ayers thing by running a reply ad. His argument is so weak that it doesn’t really qualify as an argument: Yes, we’re friendly, but it’s ancient history and I denounced what he did, so what’s the big deal about socializing with, um, an unrepentant terrorist? As for the submoronic point about Ayers’s crimes having been committed when Obama was eight — a staple of the left’s feeble defense of him on this subject — imagine what the reaction would be if Bobby Jindal, say, had struck up a chummy pen pal correspondence with Charles Manson while in his late 20s. Think the left might find that relevant to his character? Think the fact that Jindal wasn’t even born when Manson’s crimes were committed would get him off the hook? Of course not, because as even an eight-year-old can understand, the salient point isn’t how old Obama was when the crimes were committed, it’s how old he was when he formed the moral judgment that led him to associate with Ayers in the first place. The response from McCain HQ:
“The fact that Barack Obama chose to launch his political career at the home of an unrepentant terrorist raises more questions about Senator Obama’s judgment than any TV ad ever could. And the fact that he’s launching his own Convention by defending his long association with a man who says he didn’t bomb enough U.S. targets tells us more about Barack Obama than any of tonight’s speeches will.” –McCain spokesman Brian Rogers
By all means, let’s keep talking about this. Click the image to watch.

The left doesn’t see what Rich Boy Ayers did as anything really wrong.
In fact, they applaud it, they like that Barry is friends with him.

You know, for a Messiah, Obama’s sure dumb. Doesn’t the sentence “I’m friends with him” when said “him” totally unacceptable?
Of course, Obama really agrees with Ayers. Doesn’t he? I mean, what in Obama’s background, for you lefty trolls here, what in his background shows he DOESN’T agree with Ayers, etc.?
Vanceone on August 25, 2008 at 5:38 PM
John McCain is talking about the ’60s because that is very obviously where you draw your spiritual inspiration from my thin-resumed goldbricking friend.
Your “um uh um I was about 8″ response is assinine Barry as it implies that if Osama can remain on the run long enough Chicago and by extension you will welcome him into their education system.
You can’t see racist hate when it is in front of your face for 20 years and your mentor has an explosive pyrotechnic display of dissension issue…..

It’s the old “Kerry failed to respond forcefully to the Swift-boaters” mentality at work, here. Funny that they never considered the fact that Kerry would have played right into the Swift-boaters’ hands by doing so.

Weak. McCain has been pounding Obama for about a week, and this is the best he can do to defend himself? Obama is done.
BuckNutty on August 25, 2008 at 5:43 PM
Why is Obama feigning that the ’60s never happened? To “change”. By erasing the 60’s, Obama gets his “change” with more deceit. Then again, Obama needs to be 10 years younger in order to use his lifelong excuse, “I was only 8 years old”.
maverick muse on August 25, 2008 at 5:43 PM
How is McCain talking about the sixties. Wasn’t the Ayers ad done by an independent group? And the point of that ad is that as of 2001, Ayers still promotes terrorism, and Obama is still friends with him.
El_Terrible on August 25, 2008 at 5:43 PM
McCain wants to talk about it because Obama is running on his superior judgement. How is befriending a terrorist – unrepentant terrorist – exhibiting superior judgement. And his judgement told him to oppose the Iraq war – when he didn’t even have a vote – but he selects a VP who supported the war? More superior judgement from Obama? I don’t get it.

Obama needs to use his lack of national security strength to allow the old media to change the tune or else MM will set the drum beat mid week with a title like O’brother where art thou, or maybe Am I my brother’s keeper? Obama looked kosure kissing Biden’s wife the other day, and I’m shocked they can get away with that after Silky’s “What time will my wife be back from Chemo” trist. McCain may actually win this yet, but there are ways he can LOSE…like picking Romney or Lieberman. Which will un-inspire the base. Here in NC, we hear that our state and SC are in play!
Mark Young on August 25, 2008 at 5:47 PM
McCain: You started your career with and are still friends with an unrepentant terrorist.
Obama: My unrepentant terrorist friend is ancient history. Like you, you uh, er, old guy, you. Old.
Obama should have just gone with “Ayers is not the unrepentant terrorist I thought I knew. I have always said that. This does not help Michelle’s kids. Additionally, it is above my pay grade.”

Was Obama older than 8 years old at the time?
Do you know how old McCain was when he launched his political career in the home of a domestic terrorist. Ha. Trick question.

Ayers never demonstrated any remorse except for the remorse that he didn’t commit more terrorist acts.
Ayers was never punished but escaped on a technicality.

This ad is a huge mistake for Obama. It reiterates the idea that he was only a casual acquaintance of Ayers and that he really didn’t have contact with him after he was 8 years old. The public knows better than that and with all the info coming out about their work on the Annenberg Challenge it will only make Obama look like a liar. He should have let sleeping dogs lie on this one. I think that Axelrod is proving that he can’t handle the big time. It’s one thing to get a mayor or governor elected, but a President is a whole other ball game.

It probably COULD have been “ancient history” is Ayers had made pretty and begged forgiveness. Almost enough time has gone by to have pulled that off…if he’d ever done it. But, since he STILL chooses to be a happy, bomb making/throwing/planting professor of higher learning, it’s STILL relevant.
On the other hand, the whole, sorry, Democratic mad Japanese soldier meme IS getting a bit wearying. I mean, Tom Hanks on the island is a more relevant analogy, n’est pas? Wilson, anyone?

I ask, did Obama even know whom Ayers was when they met in the 90’s? Seriously? I bet he didn’t even know who the man was. They had a “collegial discussion” about Marx and “economic justice” and that was all Obama needed to befriend him. That is how green I think he is. He probably didn’t know who Ayers really was and now he can’t disown him, any more than he can Wright or his grandmother! HA!

bbz123 on August 25, 2008 at 6:02 PM
I think the picture of Ayers in the response ad is better (i.e., worse) than the one in the original 527 ad. But the best (worst) pic of Ayers is the one of him stomping the American flag…which gives me an idea:
I think the Ayers/flag pic is owned by the NY Times. Thus, if the McCain camp or a 527 uses it in an ad, we get a 2-fer:
1) A picture dramatizing the America-hating scum that Obama hangs out with,
2) Additional publicity centered around the same image when the NY Times objects to the copyright violation.

Yeah that is the disservice the M$M has done ot the Democrats in general this time and Messiah the Lightworker in particular. Ordinarily since 2000 they have at least waited until after the nominations to go into full court press cheerleader mode, but Chrissy’s leg got to tingling and they saw the opportunity to “be a part of making history” and they put a rocket under the arse of a man who is not as bright as he is well-scrubbed and articulate…apologies to Joe Biden. Obama never went through a serious hard cross-x vetting by the party powerbrokers and he looks a lot like a deer in the headlights on a lot of issues that are gonna resonate with the American electorate based on his life choices. The American undecided could probably forgive his drug use, his racist epithets against his own grandmother and middle america, his obtuse insistence on complimenting Russia and China, his refusal to acknowledge until even the NYT browbeat him into it the success of the surge, maybe even his apprenticeship to William Ayers, but asking them to forgive ALL those things is a bit much.

If Senator McCain’s track record of who he was married to when is a legitimate subject (and the MSM seems to think it is), I’d say that Senator Obama’s track record of who he was in bed with and when is, as well.
Especially if said someone believes that high explosives are a legitimate tool of political discourse. And regrets not having used enough of same to make people dance to his tune.
After all, no one in Senator McCain’s circles has ever tried to blow up the Pentagon. That dubious distinction belongs solely to al-Qaeda, the Weather Underground- and Senator Obama’s great good friend and political mentor, William Ayers.
If Senator Obama’s judgment in matters of personal behavior is this flawed, what does it say about his judgment otherwise?
Nothing good, IMHO.
And the fact that he (at least publicly) considers this matter “a distraction”- along with the rest of his previous record- speaks volumes about his arrogance, his narcissism, and his complete lack of judgment.
Three things you generally do not want in whoever sits in the Oval Office. (Two words; Richard Nixon. Two more; Jimmy Carter.)
If the Democratic Party is not experiencing “buyer’s remorse” at this point, it can only be due to excessive use of pharmaceuticals.
My guess is, they’ll need even more before this is over.

Another thing I notice from Obama’s ad. The photo of Obama at the age of 8.
I think that McCain should use that image of Obama whenever he can. Because this little kid in the striped shirt is a good metaphor of Obama’s experience. His resume. His political experience and the way Obama sees the world and makes suggestions as to how to deal with things.
Russia invades Georgia and as their tanks roll through the streets, this little 8 year old (mentality) Barack Obama tells them to just get along.
Little 8 year old Obama wants to rid the world of nuclear weapons. And how is he going to do that? Will we get rid of ours first, and hope that if we are nice to foreign powers, they’ll be nice to us and get rid of their nukes? Or will they use them against us, or other people in the world after ours are scrapped.
More bad people in the world threaten their own people and their neighbors? Little Barack Obama thinks that we should talk to them without any preconditions.
This could go on.

Why does the media ignore Ayers’ wife, Bernardine Dohrn, and her involvement in the 1981 Rockland Co., NY Brinks robbery?
Certainly, Obama was more than “8 years old” when that occured (and living in NYC) — when a guard and two policemen were mowed down by former WU friends of the Ayers.
Dohrn served 7 months of a one-year sentence for refusal to testify in the string of robberies that culminated in the ‘81 slaughter, which left 9 kids orphaned.
When released, she and Ayers married, then adopted Chesa Boudin, the son of the couple convicted and sentenced for the crime. Cathy Boudin was paroled last year. David Gilbert, Chesa’s father, is still serving a life term in Attica. He’s referred to by Ayers/Dohrn as a “politica prisoner.”
Tell that to the widows and orphans.

This ad is yet another unforced error loaded with straw man arguments. Obama’s people should have pretended there were no cockroaches in the kitchen and let the issue fade, but instead they flipped the lights back on to reveal Ayers’ non-photogenic face in a state of surprise. Couldn’t they have found a picture where he didn’t look like he just delivered a nail bomb? Idle thought: where are the “Ayers the little league coach” pictures?
I’m eagerly awaiting the revelations from the archives of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.
“The picture that is emerging is that Obama’s anti-American associates would disqualify him for a low-level security clearance—much less election to the office of commander in chief.” R. Trancinski

When Barack Hussein Obama wrote “Dreams From My Father”, wasn’t he talking about the 1960’s? He last saw his father when he was 10 years old, in 1971.
When he talked about his parents going to Selma, wasn’t that during the 1960’s? When he talked about his parents meeting to conceive him, wasn’t that during the 1960’s?
People who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. See Carter, James Earl, 1977-1980. Cue the 6 AM lines of cars stretching for miles from every gas station.
