New Obama ad: Why is McCain trying to distract us with that unrepentant terrorist I’m friends with?

posted at 5:33 pm on August 25, 2008 by Allahpundit

Mark Halperin has the clip, which is ironic since he described Ayers with the same polite euphemism yesterday that The One’s ad team uses here (George Will thankfully was there to correct him). Conventional political wisdom demands a forceful response to a forceful attack, but even so, I can’t quite believe Obama would throw fuel on the Ayers thing by running a reply ad. His argument is so weak that it doesn’t really qualify as an argument: Yes, we’re friendly, but it’s ancient history and I denounced what he did, so what’s the big deal about socializing with, um, an unrepentant terrorist? As for the submoronic point about Ayers’s crimes having been committed when Obama was eight — a staple of the left’s feeble defense of him on this subject — imagine what the reaction would be if Bobby Jindal, say, had struck up a chummy pen pal correspondence with Charles Manson while in his late 20s. Think the left might find that relevant to his character? Think the fact that Jindal wasn’t even born when Manson’s crimes were committed would get him off the hook? Of course not, because as even an eight-year-old can understand, the salient point isn’t how old Obama was when the crimes were committed, it’s how old he was when he formed the moral judgment that led him to associate with Ayers in the first place. The response from McCain HQ:

“The fact that Barack Obama chose to launch his political career at the home of an unrepentant terrorist raises more questions about Senator Obama’s judgment than any TV ad ever could. And the fact that he’s launching his own Convention by defending his long association with a man who says he didn’t bomb enough U.S. targets tells us more about Barack Obama than any of tonight’s speeches will.” –McCain spokesman Brian Rogers

By all means, let’s keep talking about this. Click the image to watch.

Bon Jovi is playing at the convention?

I can’t say I’m surprised, but it is a bit of a letdown. Ah well. At least the soundtrack will be good. Bon Jovi at the beginning, riot sirens at the end.

Ok, some one explain this to me…When Obama ‘Denounces’ Ayers’ acts, how does this help anyone…especially Obama?? He denounces ‘Americans’ murdering other Americans…wow..how profound. Way to stick your neck out there!!

‘Obama Denounces Toilet Bug’s Acts…Toilet Bug Still Sorry He Didn’t Do More!!’ Obama still chums with Toilet Bug.

Wow..

And another thing..does Ayers still actually teach?? Does he get up in front of a class??

BigWyo on August 25, 2008 at 6:46 PM

El_Terrible– good point. McCain wasn’t talking about Ayers. He was talking about Obama’s other friend, Rezko.

Even with all the problems in the world, why was Obama talking about McCain’s houses? So McCain could bring up Rezko of course. But if Obama would rather talk about Ayers…..

MayBee on August 25, 2008 at 6:47 PM

Ayers and Dorn only surrendered in 1980. Obama was working with them about 10 years later.

If the McCain team plays its cards right, this is just an amazing weapon. In fact, he doesn’t have to to anything. It’s Obomber that has raised the issue.

Jeez, it’s like they are trying with all their might to sabotage themselves!

The issue is the UNREPENTANT TERRORIST who funded your campaign and coming-out party, as well as hired you to run his Marxist “re-education” program, the files of which are now being shredded.

J.J. Sefton on August 25, 2008 at 6:11 PM

It doesn’t appear that there was any educating (“re” or otherwise) going on with the Annenberg Challenge. All Obama and Ayers seem to have accomplished is that they burned through a huge amount of money (generously donated by Walter Annenberg to improve public education), with absolutely nothing to show for it.

No doubt a preview of coming attractions if Obama is elected and gets to implement all his big-government “social justice” programs.

AZCoyote on August 25, 2008 at 6:56 PM

After her divorce, Dunham married Lolo Soetoro, and the family moved to Soetoro’s home country of Indonesia in 1967, where Obama attended local schools in Jakarta until he was ten years old.

Barack Hussein Obama II born August 4, 1961

so for about 4 years from about 6 to 10 years old Obama played Muslim.

When he talked about his parents going to Selma, wasn’t that during the 1960’s? When he talked about his parents meeting to conceive him, wasn’t that during the 1960’s?

Steve Z on August 25, 2008 at 6:43 PM

The Selma march, which supposedly inspired Obama’s parents to conceive him, occurred in 1965.

Obama was born in August, 1961 (so he was conceived in 1960).

Pretty neat trick, eh? An event that occurred when Obama Jr. was four years old inspired his conception, five years earlier.

Of course, the story of the Obamas having been brought together as a result of their passionate dedication to the U.S. Civil Rights struggle is a lot more appealing than the truth — which is that Obama Sr., a 26-year old opportunistic womanizer, left behind a wife and child in Kenya, came to the U.S. to get a free education, met a gullible white teenage girl in Hawaii, lied to her about his marital status, impregnated her, and then “married” her in a bigamous ceremony. A couple of years later, Obama Sr. abandoned the girl and their baby, went to Harvard, met yet another gullible woman who followed Obama Sr. back to Kenya, where Sr. fathered numerous children with her, and intermittently, with his first wife and other women, until he killed himself driving drunk at the age of 46.

AZCoyote on August 25, 2008 at 7:12 PM

I’m amused by Democrats who complain about other people bringing up the 60′s.

Their entire agenda is one long replay of the silliest parts of the 1960′s.

McCain has not run a single ad or said a single word about Bill Ayers. Now he can!

As long as Ayers doesn’t wear 400 dollar shoes and doesn’t own 7 houses I guess Obama can abide by him.

Flint Stone on August 25, 2008 at 7:27 PM

I always thought that Sen. Obama wasn’t ready for primetime. Until this ad, though, I didn’t think that Sen. Obama was outright stupid. This ad has forced me to change my mind. Sen. Obama is inviting more conversation by talking about terrorist Bill Ayers. Crazy like a fox? Not hardly.

LFRGary on August 25, 2008 at 7:27 PM

ninjapirate, thanks for the Ayers link. Another reason to kick that coward’s arse if I ever come across him.

btw, McCain needs to hit back HARD on this Obama ad and keep Ayers on the forefront (with more to come: Annenberg, etc.)

ex-Democrat on August 25, 2008 at 7:27 PM

The speed of the McCain campaign’s response is getting so HOT! Paris Hilton Hot. I heard the crack of the whip on that one. Excellent.

EyesOpen on August 25, 2008 at 7:28 PM

Team Obama is out of their mind and are now giving even more attention to Ayers.

The latest

Sen. Barack Obama has launched an all-out effort to block a Republican billionaire’s efforts to tie him to domestic and foreign terrorists in a wave of negative television ads.

Obama’s campaign has written the Department of Justice demanding a criminal investigation of the “American Issues Project,” the vehicle through which Dallas investor Harold Simmons is financing the advertisements. The Obama campaign — and tens of thousands of supporters — also is pressuring television networks and affiliates to reject the ads. The effort has met with some success: CNN and Fox News are not airing the attacks, and some local affiliates have refused as well.

Obama has also launched his own response ad, directly addressing Simmons’ attempt to link him to domestic terror.

My two cents: The Obama-Ayers ad ran here in SW Ohio all afternoon yesterday. I think it is very effective. The line about Obama kicking off his political career at Ayers’s home is a crusher.

The Donks are the only human beings who think that’s irrelevant. If you know about Ayers already, you just shake your head and wonder why Obama is even in the race. If you know nothing about Ayers (yet), you can’t possibly consider voting for Obama–we don’t elect candidates who associate with the Ayerses of the world to the office of president.

Good luck to Michelle Obama trying to portray Obama as a plain old regular family man. What a joke.

BuckeyeSam on August 25, 2008 at 7:45 PM

You should hear some of the trash being run on the radio in Philadelphia against McCain by some of the unions. So far I haven’t seen McCain’s campaign calling them and pressuring them not to run the ads or threatening litigation.

They still can’t BELIEVE Republicans are not using any racial attacks against Obama.

rockmom on August 25, 2008 at 7:50 PM

Sorry this just doesn’t cut it Berry.

Ayers has recently stated that not only does he not regret his terrorist acts, but he should have done more. Knowing this, Berry kicked his presidential campaign off at Ayers house.

Borislav on August 25, 2008 at 8:00 PM

I was watching Glenn Beck this evening and one of his guests said that the MSM is treating Obama as a “moderate.” That goes for the Obama-Biden ticket as well. The same MSM is calling Ayers a “respected college professor.” How is the American public ever going to learn the truth when the truth is not being reported? Many people I know cannot afford cable TV, much less a computer. If it weren’t for these blogs, I might be just as ill-informed as my neighbors. Question: How do we get the information from blogs to the MSM?

mushroom on August 25, 2008 at 8:01 PM

Nice going Berry, now every idiot with a computer who had no idea about your relationship with Ayers will google Obama/Ayers relationship.

Obama says that it’s above his pay grade when a baby gets human rights.

My question to Obama, If it’s above your pay grade to know when a baby gets human rights why did you vote against banning partial birth abortion, should you have left that decision and vote up to someone else more qualified?

Chakra Hammer on August 25, 2008 at 8:53 PM

What a lame attempt to deflect Obamas connection Ayers.
They know that this connections is much deeper and Obama
is about to be exposed to being associated with Ayers in
the Chicago Annenberg Project.
This was a huge mistake by Obama and his people to open
this up now, most of the public had no idea what this about.

Poor man. He’s so far out of his league. McCain has a treasure trove of ammo to use against “THE ONE”, it’s astounding. Even more astounding is how far Obama has come in this whole election cycle. It is truly amazing to me.

Putting aside the usual taunts about HRH “The One” and “ObaMessiah” for a moment, by what authority does the Obammy campaign “demand a criminal investigation” of free speech?

Of course not, because as even an eight-year-old can understand, the salient point isn’t how old Obama was when the crimes were committed, it’s how old he was when he formed the moral judgment that led him to associate with Ayers in the first place.

McCain needs to memorize and use that statement against Barack, word for word.

CliffHanger on August 26, 2008 at 12:11 AM

I believe that there is evidence (can’t find it in my mental roledex right now) that Obama worked with Ayers as early as 1987.

Given that we have the NY Times op-ed piece from September 11th 2001 http://tinyurl.com/ywjs7g (for those who didn’t know — weird, huh) in which Ayers says he didn’t do enough bomb making, and video of him and wife Bernadette Dohrn in the fall of 2007 (? date — at an SDS reunion?) denouncing the US, I would hope to heaven that many of the Democrat voters out there would question Barack Obama’s mind boggling record of dismally poor judgment — and the Democrat leadership that allowed him to get this far un-vetted.

The unexamined life can be dangerous.

But you know — Ayers and Dohrn are probably nice people. After all, they raised the son of their Weather Underground friends who are in prison to this day for a Brinks robbery (in 1981!) in which a Brinks guard and two police officers were murdered and others seriously injured. There were nine children left fatherless. So yeah, who can fault Barack for hanging — and working on “reform” — with a guy in his neighborhood.

JAL on August 26, 2008 at 12:43 AM

As per a previous poster — Kathy Boudin was released on parole in the fall of 2003. From what I can find on the net she did voice repentance. The claim of course was that she was unarmed and in the passenger’s seat of the U Haul that contained an armory of weapons and bad guys who shot everyone up.

She was also in the building that blew up accidentally in Greenwich village in the 60s, but had been sick and was asleep. She was supposed to have had nothing to do with the bomb in the basement, although it is clear from the context that the Weathermen were violently radical.

JAL on August 26, 2008 at 1:10 AM

Don’t have time to read all the comments, but did you all see this from Politico?

The effort has met with some success: CNN and Fox News are not airing the attacks, and some local affiliates have refused as well…

Bauer’s letter called on the Justice Department to open “an investigation of the American Issues Project; its officers and directors; and its anonymous donors, whoever they may be…”

…Obama’s also targeting the advertisers of stations airing the ad, in an attempt to keep it off the air, an aide said.

I think an apt comparison with the Obamanation’s twenty year friendship with Ayers and Dohrn (and that pali terror apologist as well) would be if Sirhan Sirhan got out of prison in 1988 and then had McCain or any repub for high office had a close personal relationship with him and sought his blessing for his running for federal office, what would the media say? Oh, it was twenty years ago, no big deal? Yeah, right.

eaglewingz08 on August 26, 2008 at 8:48 AM

There are just too many people in Obama’s past that hold this country in contempt. McCain should continue to use Obama’s hate America crowd in ads.

His idea of change does not include keeping America number one, but to reduce our ability to help freedom seeking people around the world and embold our enemeies.

johnsondw on August 26, 2008 at 8:49 AM

Wow, the slow motion suicide of the Obama campaign continues. What an absolute gift to McCain. And, by the way, what’s this crap about John McCain going back to the ’60s? McCain’s campaign didn’t even launch the Ayers ad in the first place. So not only is Obama’s response lame, he lies and says he’s responding to an attack by the McCain campaign.

eyedoc on August 26, 2008 at 9:37 AM

The better anaolgy I think is with Eric Rudolph. Imagine McCain could have been found to have attended a church who’s pastor was once associated with a radical pro-life group which had endorsed eric rudolph’s tactics. The outrage would be deafening. “Rightwing” malfeasances are that radioactive. When a progressive kills a security guard with a bomb intended for a senator, its justice perhaps to stridently persued.

eh on August 26, 2008 at 10:26 AM

Lame to even make this ad–all it does is remind people of the (true) charges against Obama and his terrorist/leftist associations.
