Huckabee: Romney should have ignored the Massachusetts Supreme Court’s ruling on gay marriage

posted at 7:36 pm on August 25, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

It comes at 30:45, right after he finishes wondering what the difference is between men marrying men and people marrying animals. (Er, consent?) This plays well with the base and no doubt he’ll enjoy the extra venom it earns him from Team Mitt, but I think he’s dead wrong. Where’s the line? If the governor gets to pick and choose which rulings to enforce, we’re forever on the brink of a constitutional crisis. In fact, if Eisenhower had followed this advice, schools wouldn’t have been desegregated after Brown. What he’s suggesting, actually, in the name of empowering the people is making the judiciary nothing more than an arm of the executive. If that’s the government you want, okay, but in that case you might as well go the whole nine yards and abolish judicial review by constitutional amendment. Short of that, you’re not without options. The governor can campaign for an amendment to overturn an unpopular decision or, in states where judges are elected, to get them tossed out and replaced with ones who’ll vote the way the majority wants. Exit question: The Huck approach or the Romney approach? Click the image to watch.

Update: Good question: “Note that Huckabee’s excuse for soliciting additional taxes — any additional tax schemes; they were all ‘all right by me,’ as he said — was that he was compelled by a state court decision to do so. (Actually, he wasn’t quite, but let’s pretend he was.) How come you didn’t just defy the courts yourself, Huck?”

I just happen to agree with him on this issue of Gay Marriage and the Massachusetts Supreme Court not having jurisdiction to make law.

jparks1972 on August 25, 2008 at 9:54 PM

Well, you’re both wrong and it can’t be argued otherwise. A governor doesn’t get to pick and choose which Supreme Court decisions to comply with.

And yet all complaints were dismissed except one which was later over turned on appeal. One since that time ended in a letter but no other discipline.

My question is why do homosexuals feel like they have to enter into a contract? It isn’t for additional “rights” as they claim, since you can get all that with power of attornee and other means. The simple fact is that they want their lifestyle approved by the masses.

dominigan on August 25, 2008 at 9:40 PM

Divorce and remarriage is legal–though many disapprove. For that matter many people believe gambling, smoking, alcohol, caffeine, or red meat are immoral. If gay people marry it is still possible to disapprove of their lifestyle in the same way one might regard a marriage between a 20 year old and 70 year old as wrong.

Now as for Huck, he’s a moron I’d never vote for. I’m not a fan of Romney but I can accept him as Veep. Huck? NEVER!

Look that’s fine, but I’m just wondering what has happened to HA. I’ve never been a Huck fan, even though I’m an evangelical… but I just can’t understand all the name-calling on this thread. HA used to be the place to come for civil discourse.

Name me one Democrat that has managed to get Gay Marriage instituted, Socialized Healthcare signed into law, and taxpayer funded abortion for $50 copay. They have all tried and failed but Romney succeeded. I am sure he had help but he was ultimately responsible.

jparks1972 on August 25, 2008 at 9:47 PM

What a terrible shame that so many bought this rewrite of history and thus sunk the chances in the primary of the most competent concervative candidate in the race.

Romney was on the battlefield fighting hand to hand against liberal craziness. How easy it is for an armchair general like Huckster to sit back from the deep south and claim he is a better warrior then that guy out in the field.

legislature can pass a law, executive can enforce the law, judiciary can overturn a law. A runaway judiciary can cause a great deal of havoc, as we’ve seen far too many times.

Take California for example. When Gavin Newsom decided he was just gonna issue marriage licenses to any two people who asked, the Governator stopped it. When the CA Supreme Court did its thing, though, Arnold did nothing. The only recourse is Proposition 8 (because 22 apparently isn’t enough) to modify the constitution.

But many, many times, a resolution has passed in CA, only to be overturned by the judiciary.

What’s the recourse then? Well, when Rose Bird was CA supreme court chief justice, and overturned every death penalty sentence that came to her, the voters voted to recall her and two other justices. it ended her reign of error, but it didn’t undo the damage she caused.

What will the Christian hating bigot RINO’s on this site do when the Maverick pulls a fast one on them and selects Mike Huckabee as his running mate?

Will they cry, suck their thumbs and head back to the libertarian party or what?

The answer is:… Nobody cares what they will do, as the Christian hating bigoted atheists and mormons that hate Mike Huckabee are a tiny overrepresented minority, far out of mainstream society, and without real voting power.

The more important question to ask would be: What will Christians do if if the Maverick says FU to them and selects Romney as his running mate??

The answer is obvious…many many millions of them will either sit it out or vote for Ubama just to stop them!

It’s a fact that you’re going to have to deal with someday(election day).

The difference is that the MAJORITY of the United States are Christians, and if even a fraction of them sit it out, Mccain will lose!

Come back to reality people.

In addition to all the glaringly obvious flaws in a Romney candidacy; 3com,$50 abortions, universal medicine, flip flops, out right lies, huge fortune spent and inability to connect with voters, etc. etc. etc.

Here are the facts:

1. Mormonism is a cult. (Nobody can disagree with that statement)

2. Mormonism is a cult that claims to represent Christianity.

3. And most importantly of all:

Americans will not elect a cult member!

Yes, I have heard of Roe v Wade… and add to that Kelo. However, we are a Constitutional Republic. The Governor has taken an oath of office to uphold his state’s Constitution. If the judiciary issues an opinion, and unconstitutionally tries to force it as law, it is the duty of the Governor to refuse to comply with the unconstitutional action. To do anything else, is to violate his oath of office.

This is ridiculous. That was a great interview. And Governor Huckabee is a true Conservative. Look, anybody who complains about the answers Mike gave oughta start thinking about joining the Democratic party. Now look at this. Take a look here. The very last question Terry Jeffrey asked Huckabee in the interview was this:

Terry Jeffrey: Governor, we’ve talked about two very fundamental issues here: The right to life and the nature of marriage. They’re central to society, culture, and civilization. And yet you have a Republican party that doesn’t seem willing to wanna really take this debate to the nation and really protect these intitutions. Why?

That was a GREAT QUESTION TERRY!

IS HUCKABEE A FLIP-FLOPPER?

So Huckabee is an ordained minister. I’m assuming that during his sermons he preached against sins–such as not having sex outside of marriage (I assume this would include no sex with hookers too), no getting drunk and loosing control, no drugs, etc.

But Huck apparently had no issues with this un-Christianly behavior while performing with his band and playing songs such as Honky Tonk Woman, a Rolling Stones’ song about getting drunk in a bar and having sex with a hooker!

So is Huck now for sex with hookers or is he against sex with hookers???!!! Based on his history as both a minister and a member of a band playing this type of music…I have to wonder!

FLIP-FLOP…or just a deceiver during his stints as a preacher??? BTW, why will Huckabee NOT release his sermons?! What is he hiding?

And this man criticizes Romney for being a flip-flopper???!!!

Sulla, As a native Californian, born in Sac, I have had to put up with the sickness of the 9th Circuit that has made a mockery of our judicial system. Legislating from the bench was invented by our California courts. Many would think that when any decision is overturned by the 9th 68% of the time by the Supreme Court over the past 20 years there has to be a problem with the system, but these “justice’s” are appointed by the liberal left out of LA and SF respectfully, while they are never represented by the state as a whole.

Governor Reagan bucked this system for a short period only because impeachment was threatened. The rest is history.

Why would McCain recycle his man-crush with Huck when he has much better RINO’s to choose from? Heck Lieberman is still available.

Cold Steel on August 25, 2008 at 10:44 PM

What will the Christian hating bigot RINO’s on this site do when the Maverick pulls a fast one on them and selects Mike Huckabee as his running mate?

SaintOlaf on August 25, 2008 at 10:25 PM

I think I will have to go be a bigot DINO for a while, since Huck on the ticket would mean the end of the Republican Party. Then maybe become a bigot WINO, or a bigot MINO, then a bigot ChINO, something I get from you, Scent O’ Loaf.

SaintOlaf on August 25, 2008 at 10:25 PM

Here are the facts:

1. You are clinically insane.
2. You try to turn every thread about Romney or Huckabee into a pointless religious debate about Mormonism.
3. You are clinically insane.
4. Romney is a viable- if imperfect- VP candidate.
5. You are clinically insane.
6. This is not Iraq. We don’t vote for candidates based primarily on their religious beliefs.
7. You are clinically insane.

Hollowpoint on August 25, 2008 at 10:43 PM

Did you mention that he’s clinically insane?

Cold Steel on August 25, 2008 at 10:46 PM

And did you take my suggestion and read through the comments? Would you describe them as a lively discourse on the various points he made? …or perhaps an interesting diatribe contrasting his stance with Romney’s or McCain’s? …or maybe even a discussion on how they compare with the Republican platform and future strategy?

Let’s see…yes, not always, certainly interesting but not all that informative and…if Huckabee represents the future strategy of the Republican party, why didn’t he win more primaries?

Huckabee is not a man for whom I have any respect.

Sorry to break this to you, SaintOlaf, but I am among millions of evangelicals that voted for Romney in the primaries and will vote for him again as VP. Americians voted for Romney’s father as Gov. of Michigan; why the sudden problem with religion now???!!! Hmmmm…

Only certain Huckie-lover-bigots got a problem with Romney’s religion. Oh, and btw, we are electing a prez and VP, NOT A MINISTER!

Shelby on August 25, 2008 at 10:48 PM

Here are the facts:

1. Mormonism is a cult. (Nobody can disagree with that statement)

2. Mormonism is a cult that claims to represent Christianity.

3. And most importantly of all:

Americans will not elect a cult member!

I’ve read every post on this thread. I’ve read HA for almost 3 years. I never read AP before HA. I came in as a crossover from MM. I prefer to focus on policy stances, instead of personal attacks. I’m an evangelical conservative first and Republican second. And I’m married with 4 kids, trying to figure out how to pay for college. :)

My time is too valuable to spend sifting through noise. And this thread has a lot of noise, and I’m just disappointed in the lack of quality and manners.

(And yes, I work in the IT field… explains all the shortcut acronymns!)

It’s such a shame that we will have to put up with a Ubama presidency for four years(or until we impeach him), but if this is what we have to do to take this party back from the Liberal RINO minority….then SO BE IT.

Even though it will be disastrous…what is far worse is having our party taken away from us, and having a majority of voters in this country losing the right to choose our leaders.

If Mccain picks Romney, not only will Mccain lose…he will come in third to 1. Hussein Ubama and 2. Combination of Chuck Baldwin/registered republicans who did not vote.

You heard it here first!

SaintOlaf on August 25, 2008 at 10:48 PM

I know what I’ll be doing if McCain picks Huckster as the VP- I’ll be on my rooftop with a rifle trying to shoot down the flying pigs.

Mitt wouldn’t be a horrible choice, but I still think it’s a bit risky given the existance of people who inexplicably vote based on a candidates religious beliefs.

This is my first time on Hot Air – just registered tonight. I came here unsure of what to expect, but leave disappointed.

Seems as though intelligent discourse is lacking. Maybe it is just a “down” night but I can only assume this is the norm since those who speak seem very comfortable in their language and disrespect. I guess it was too much to hope for – discussion with substance. I have been on enough of these kinds of sites to know it is not for me.

To those of you who enjoy this kind of environment, I feel sorry for you.

If that’s true it would make you a very unique little snowflake. 100% of the pro-Huckster, anti-Romney commenters to this point have been those motivated solely by the belief that how devout a Christian a candidate is stands above all else.

We’ve had dozens of threads about Huckabee or Romney, and they all end up the same way.
