Biden’s son consulted for credit company Biden defended in Senate

Remember when Barack Obama wanted to change the manner business got conducted in Washington?  If that seems a long time ago, it retreated further in the distance when Team Obama admitted yesterday that running mate Joe Biden had a son consulting MBNA, a credit company who had a lot to lose if a bankruptcy bill Obama opposed became law.  Biden actively supported the bill, which made their investment in consultants look wide indeed:

During the years that Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. was helping the credit card industry win passage of a law making it harder for consumers to file for bankruptcy protection, his son had a consulting agreement that lasted five years with one of the largest companies pushing for the changes, aides to Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign acknowledged Sunday.

Mr. Biden’s son, Hunter, received consulting fees from the MBNA Corporation from 2001 to 2005 for work on online banking issues. Aides to Mr. Obama, who chose Mr. Biden as his vice-presidential running mate on Saturday, would not say how much the younger Mr. Biden, who works as both a lawyer and lobbyist in Washington, had received, though a company official had once described him as having a $100,000 a year retainer. But Obama aides said he had never lobbied for MBNA and that there was nothing improper about the payments. …

Mr. Biden’s support for the bankruptcy changes, which were signed into law in 2005, puts him at odds with Mr. Obama of Illinois, who opposed the bill and has criticized the presumptive Republican nominee, Senator John McCain of Arizona, for supporting it. Consumer advocates and other Democratic allies remain sharply critical of Mr. Biden’s actions, saying in recent days that they could hamper the campaign’s efforts to attack the Republicans over their handling of the nation’s credit crisis.

The timing on this just has to be coincidental, right?  Hunter Biden goes to work for $100,000 a year as a consultant to MBNA, just when the Republicans come to power and bankruptcy reform becomes a hot topic.  After paying a half-million dollars to Biden’s son, Biden himself crosses the aisle and defends the bill as well as the credit companies lobbying Congress for its passage.  Once the bill passes, though, Hunter Biden has to look for work elsewhere.

Coincidence?  Uh …. sure.

That doesn’t mean that the bill itself was bad, by the way.  Bankruptcy had become too easy an out for debtors, and the system needed reform.  However, Barack Obama has hammered McCain on this exact same bill, claiming that he sided with corporate interests over the welfare of average Americans.  At least McCain voted his conscience on the bill, rather than protect his family’s pecuniary interests.

Obama has built his campaign on ending these kinds of lobbying relationships and their effects on politics.  Now he has to abandon both his criticism of the bankruptcy bill as well as throw lobbying reform under the bus.  According to the New York Times, Obama considered this when he chose Biden as his running mate.  What does that tell you about the character and integrity of Barack Obama?

Well, even the local “news” rag (the Wilmington News Journal) endorsed the other candidate because Beau Biden had no experience. He ran on his name and won. The first thing he did in office was try to get a private bathroom installed in the AG’s office. He lives about two miles from his office and a state-owned SUV and driver chauffeurs him in every day.

Unfortunately I don’t think that all of those Obamabots who sit behind him during his campaign stops – nodding head in agreement – clapping at appropriate times – laughing on cue – have any clue what character and integrity means.

Character? That’s a part in a movie.
Integrity? Isn’t that a car rich people drive?

So lets see Junior’s billing records. What EXACTLY did he do for MBNA. He was a “consultant”. Consulting on what? From where? For how many hours a week? They say he wasn’t lobbying, well lobbying is legal. It’s protected by the first ammendment. A no show job used to influence your daddy the Senator is corrupt. So tell me Junior, what EXACTLY did you do for your $100K ?

Statergery wise..

It may not be a good idea to bust on Biden quite yet… wait till he is nominated, then go after his record and such…

Muledriver on August 25, 2008 at 11:46 AM

I think some people have this a little backwards.

Joe Biden was always going to support MBNA’s agenda in the Senate. It’s by far the biggest employer in the state. Many other banks are technically HQed in Delaware because of its lenient banking laws. Tom Carper, Delaware’s other senator, is on the Banking Committee and has also been a reliable friend of the banks. It would be political madness for any Senator not to support his state’s biggest employer especially in a small state like Delaware. Tim Johnson also supported the bankruptcy bill because Citibanks’ credit card operation is one of South Dakota’s biggest employers.

My concern is that Joe Biden strong-armed MBNA into giving a huge consulting contract to his no-talent son. This happens more than you think.

rockmom on August 25, 2008 at 11:49 AM

Time for an RNC ad on that one.

bridgetown on August 25, 2008 at 11:45 AM

You’re right; they don’t. But for Obama to focus his campaign on a certain type of populist rhetoric and then bring on a politician who could ostensibly have been the very target of his rhetoric is remarkable hypocrisy.

For the definition of hypocrisy in this context, see every public statement Obama has made since declaring that he had secured the nomination. He is making John Kerry look like a granite pillar of principled resolve.

Jaibones on August 25, 2008 at 11:52 AM

Big problem? Messiah has about the same problems with respect to Michelle in her position at the Medical Center and “minority contracts”.

In chemistry, we say that “likes go with likes”. That is, molecules tend to go to the environment in which they are suited. For example, salt dissolves in water, but fat does not. I think you can draw the relevant parallels yourself.

On the other hand, if Obama dumps Biden, just days after naming him, he will shoot what little credibility he has left to heck and back.

So much for his claims of having superior judgement.

Hmmmmm. From the Times story:

In late 1996, the company hired the younger of Mr. Biden’s two sons, Robert Hunter Biden, known as Hunter, who had just graduated from Yale Law School, as a lawyer. The company promoted Mr. Biden to senior vice president by early 1998. And after the younger Mr. Biden worked at the Commerce Department on electronic commerce issues from 1998 to 2001, MBNA hired him back on a monthly consulting contract to advise it on such issues, aides said.

I wonder how much money he made as a Senior V.P. (I’m guessing a lot) and why he would leave that job to work for the Commerce Department (not much?).

Related, here’s a very interesting piece from Byron York, written in 1998 but reprinted two days ago in honor of Biden’s achieving running mate status. It appears that there is a question about the sale of Joe Biden’s house (oh no!) in addition to questions then about his son’s ties to MBNA.

(enter Rush Limbaugh old man rustling sound effects) McSwish called lobbyists birds of prey …and vowed to enforce a lifetime ban on lobbying for members of his administration. That’s the kind of straight talk we can expect from a man who has 850 bundlers working for his campaign. 76 of which are lobbyist bundlers (by far more lobbyist bundlers than another candidate in either party during all 2008 primaries). Now, is this not a man ready for leadership.

a_sure_thing on August 25, 2008 at 2:11 PM

A lefty on another site defended this by saying Biden’s son was 38 – long moved out of his father’s house and old enough to make his own decisions!

I marvel at how the mind contorts. Boo-urns indeed.

Maybe I’m missing something here, but don’t you mean MBNA had a lot to gain by the passage of the law? A) That would be much closer to the reality of the situation, as the credit card companies lobbied fiercely for passage of this bill. B) It would be more consistent with JB’s strong support of the bill.
