Carl Lewis already did. He won the 100, 200 and the long jump. Bolt could best Lewis, but it will take more.

Bolt is is a sprinter, what lazy sprinters do is never more impressive than mid-distance or distance.

Seriously, Bolt’s 100/200 Gold combo was downright inspirational! Could he have done it barefoot? Maybe!

I still think that the 100 m mark along with the mile mark are the most important/desirable world records in sport.

Why can’t we say that both Olympic performances were impressive, and leave it at that? Is one more impressive than the other? Maybe that depends on which sport you like better.

You know Bolt improved HIS 100 m record too (without running as fast as he could). . . but you are probably right, it’s not as impressive. Bolt isn’t the mamma’s boy that Phelps seems to be. I bet Bolt’s 200 m record stands longer than any of Phelps’ records. . . unless Bolt breaks it himself.

You can use a fast sprint in more parts of the world than you can use a fast swim. Running fast is an advantage in many sports and every day life. Swimming fast has to occur in a pool. . . and likely swimming FAST is not as important as swimming distance or even treading water for long amounts of time merely to avoid drowning.

I’m likely to need to be able to run fast than swim fast in my life and I believe more people are.

But yeah, 7 is bigger than 3. But I bet if he ran in more races, Bolt would have won more. I know, he’s not American otherwise the comparison would be more important to Americans. . . are you racist? (joke)

While I am generally against hot-dogging, I think that anyone who is far enough ahead in the 100 meter dash to even contemplate hot dogging is entitled to. I would have liked to see a 9.58, but it was Bolt’s race and it was the most dominant 100 meter win I’ve ever seen. I think he earned the right to clown around. If he tripped and destroyed his ankle while he was clowning around I wouldn’t have shed a tear for him, but that was his choice.

I would describe Bolt’s hot dogging in the 100 meter run as the “conspicuous consumption of talent”.

Agreed. It isn’t exactly my style, but he seems like an easygoing guy. And a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

Overlooked by whom? I have read and watched various accounts about Clay’s win.

I like him, and feel sorry for the sourpusses who thought he was over-the-top.

Funny how people lionize/worship certain folks who have no accomplishments to boast of and look down their noses at a guy like Bolt who does.

If he wins Gold there, he will match the record now held by Bob Mathias and Great Britain’s Daley Thompson. If he wins Silver or Bronze, it will still set an all time record, as no athelete has ever won an Olympic medal in the decathalon in 3 separate Olympics.
