Open thread: Bright, clean, articulate nominee introduces VP in Springfield; Update: Video added; Update: 20% less likely to vote McCain if he picked woman VP, says poll

John Miller wanted to see that headline, so there you go. 3 p.m. ET around the dial; if you’re tuned in, comment below. We’ll be taping so look for video here later in case Biden cracks a fried chicken joke or pats Obama on the head or does something else refreshingly politically incorrect for the left to coo over. Your exit question while you wait: Where does this leave McCain with his own VP pick? Stephen Hayes and Tom Bevan offer unconvincing answers (Lieberman and, er, John Kasich, respectively), but Bevan’s analysis is otherwise spot on. If Obama had named Hillary, Maverick might have been forced to throw a Hail Mary with Joementum or Palin or Carly Fiorina. As it is, one safe pick permits another, which means Mitt or Pawlenty. The latter’s safer than the former among the base, but I can’t see undecideds handing the keys to the country to a guy no one outside of Minnesota has ever heard of. I have to think it’s Mitt.
Special bonus exit question: Why exactly is Palin a worse choice than Pawlenty? I swear I remember seeing a poll somewhere that McCain would actually lose points from picking a woman VP, but after 20 minutes of googling I can’t find it. Can anyone help?
Update: Hotline’s on the same page.
Update: You know who this helps, asks Hugh Hewitt? Mitt Romney.
Update: Commenters have dubbed this the “Clean and Jerk” ticket.
Update: Obama-NBC has video of both speeches uncut.
Update: Bill Amos found the poll I was looking for. Why Pawlenty is better than Palin:
For all the chatter about the pros and cons of picking a female vice president, a new poll commissioned by Lifetime finds that women are not particularly likely to be influenced by the selection of a lady VP. In the poll, 55% of women say that Obama’s selection of a female running mate would make no difference to their voting choice, and 62% said the same of McCain. (A Republican woman VP could actually hurt McCain. A full 20% responded that they would be LESS likely to support the GOP nominee if he selected a female on the ticket.)

Hey, I just noticed that “Biden” is in blue on a blue background on the new signs. Ouch. Could there be a clearer semiotic signal that the campaign wants Joe to fade into the background?

This is Atlas Shrugged ‘08.
Biden: “When have the American people let themselves down when they have a great leader to lead them?”
What the fu#$ does that mean? Some more idolatry from the socialist party, it really never ends. Americans are only great when they have a politician to guide them. The Democratic Party is so lost I can’t find the words to describe it.
Subsequently, Romney would dominate Biden, he actually has had a job in the private sector and understands how our economy works, and is not some empty suit that has pushed papers in Washington for 30+ years.
Biden just called BHO “Barack America” and said he has “steel in his spine”.

Biden talks too much. He’s like a Saturday Night Live skit that’s funny for about 30 seconds and then goes on excruciatingly for another 5-10 minutes. He made his point a long time ago — America sucks — he’s just repeating himself in slightly different ways now.

Putting Mitt’s extraordinary experience, fundraising ability, and organization aside…. Mitt easily brings Nevada and Colorado (+14 EVs) with their Mormon population. New Hampshire is a shoe-in (+4EVs), but thats irrelevant, so long as we’re expecting to hold onto Virginia and Indiana. Victory then requires winning one of three states: Michigan, Ohio, or the long shot, Pennsylvania. Ohio will be all about campaigning, adding Mitt to the mix actually brings Michigan into play, Pennsylvania with Ridge but that’s a longshot. Or Pawlenty with another maybe +10 electoral votes if he could even deliver Minessota, but those 10 EVs don’t change the outcome.
It’s Mitt.

Biden doesn’t overwhelm Obama physically. While Obama is tall, he’s very slight. A solidly-built man of similar height would have made Obama look like a teenager. While Biden is sturdier-looking than Obama, he’s of a similar height and is not large enough to make O look like a kid.

I said earlier that Biden’s style was boring-white-guy compared to Obama’s Baptist-preacher, but I take it back. Biden built it up gradually and ended with the impression of emotionalism, which libs love. Not too bad really, just too long and repetitive.

Biden said something like to the effect that it was “literally incredible” that they both wound up being where they were about to become president and vice-president.
I agree with him. It is literally incredible. Meaning “beyond belief or understanding”

My goodness Keith Olbermann’s analogies are violent. He used the analogy of hitting someone (I’m guesses McCain?) with a wooden table leg and then talks about double edge sword.

You know what’s rich, besides McCain’s wife?
A guy rich enough to get hair plugs, lecturing McCain on his seven kitchen tables, while his presidential candidate basks in the limelight of support from celebrities more the richer than McCain’s even been in his life.
Then again, just like how political correctness is only required if you’re something other than a Democrat, I’m sure the amount of wealth you have only matters when you’re something other than a Democrat.
How completely tasteless, hypocrisy-infested, and faux.

I think it will be Romney now.
He can debate well enough, can make a strong free-market case that the Democrat contolled congress is doing the damage by not slashing taxes, and will be Ok on foreign policy.
Biden also takes away Huckabees trump card of having some sort of veep veto-power on the South vote. Biden/Obama gun grabbing trumps worries over “those Mormons”.
You lose Huck.

Bill Kristol is laughable sometimes. I flipped over to Fox News to listen to the talking heads go over the Biden announcement. Kristol was worried because since many Republicans are looking forward to Biden as VP, they must be wrong. Yeah, because we Republicans were wrong about Harriet Miers, Alito, Roberts, Dubai (though this point is arguable), amnesty, etc.
Kristol was one of these inside the beltways who liked the Gang of 14, and didn’t see what was so bad about the amnesty bill. His connections as being an insider is, to me, the only reason why he’s still one of these talking heads on tv.
