John Miller wanted to see that headline, so there you go. 3 p.m. ET around the dial; if you’re tuned in, comment below. We’ll be taping so look for video here later in case Biden cracks a fried chicken joke or pats Obama on the head or does something else refreshingly politically incorrect for the left to coo over. Your exit question while you wait: Where does this leave McCain with his own VP pick? Stephen Hayes and Tom Bevan offer unconvincing answers (Lieberman and, er, John Kasich, respectively), but Bevan’s analysis is otherwise spot on. If Obama had named Hillary, Maverick might have been forced to throw a Hail Mary with Joementum or Palin or Carly Fiorina. As it is, one safe pick permits another, which means Mitt or Pawlenty. The latter’s safer than the former among the base, but I can’t see undecideds handing the keys to the country to a guy no one outside of Minnesota has ever heard of. I have to think it’s Mitt.
Special bonus exit question: Why exactly is Palin a worse choice than Pawlenty? I swear I remember seeing a poll somewhere that McCain would actually lose points from picking a woman VP, but after 20 minutes of googling I can’t find it. Can anyone help?
Update: Hotline’s on the same page.
Update: You know who this helps, asks Hugh Hewitt? Mitt Romney.
Update: Commenters have dubbed this the “Clean and Jerk” ticket.
Update: Obama-NBC has video of both speeches uncut.
Update: Bill Amos found the poll I was looking for. Why Pawlenty is better than Palin:
For all the chatter about the pros and cons of picking a female vice president, a new poll commissioned by Lifetime finds that women are not particularly likely to be influenced by the selection of a lady VP. In the poll, 55% of women say that Obama’s selection of a female running mate would make no difference to their voting choice, and 62% said the same of McCain. (A Republican woman VP could actually hurt McCain. A full 20% responded that they would be LESS likely to support the GOP nominee if he selected a female on the ticket.)

So Joe was just Biden his time for 35 years in the Senate until someone asked him to be veep? Biden is probably the best pick the Dems could come up with, as Al Franken is busy running for the Senate.

Did you see the Dim commercial where they zoom in on McCain’s expensive shoes — and even draw a red circle around them? Meanwhile, Michelle Obama boasts a collection of $800 a pair Jimmy Choo shoes, but nobody’s supposed to mention that.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but a VP pick is supposed to give you a spike, not maintain your flatline, right?
Could Obama have picked a less exciting running mate?
Got a feeling Biden wasn’t the first pick or even the third pick; rather, he was the only guy on the list to accept…
Hope McCain’s paying attention to this carefully as a textbook example of what not to do.
In every aspect of making a VP pick and announcement.

What got me about both of their speeches is that they droned on and on about how everyone who works hard and doesn’t quit will become a success like they are… how that is the American way. (btw, I agree with them that)
And yet, they both believe that their audience is incapable of doing exactly that without government handouts. They want to punish the rich (>$200k) and take the profits of corporations, and redistribute it to people who don’t work as hard or smart, or who quit.
And they don’t seem to see the inconsistency and the lack of logic and reason in their own statements. At the convention they will parade out a whole list of real people who just cannot solve their own problems. Instead of encouraging everyone to do what they did (work hard and never give up) they want us all to feel guilty for being more succesful than the losers in our society.

Tough day, isn’t it Dave? Buck up, you’ll have your shot, but down deep you just know that unless McCain really goes mavericky, none of the potential pubbie candidates are as delightful to behold as Greasy Joe. Sure, you can whine a bit about the GOP pick, but it won’t have the BITE that Barry’s judgment gives us to use. Just don’t get suicidal or anything, you’ve had a sinking feeling about Barry for some time now, so this exhibition of his judgment shouldn’t shock too much.

Biden gave AN ENTIRE SPEECH that was plagiarized
the speech was ABOUT DETIALS OF HIS LIFE GROWING UP rather than some policy speech.
Biden LIED FOR 10 - 15 MINUTES
Janos Hunyadi on August 23, 2008 at 5:45 PM
Link or source? I did read somewhere he claimed to be from a coal mining family, which was discredited.

I pressed the ’submit’ button by mistake, but said most of what I meant to say. This is not some gaffe or ‘clean articulate’ remark; Biden stood there and talked extensively about his family life as a child, and every word was a lie.
HE STONE AN ENTIRE SPEECH–AN ENTIRE CHILDHOOD–FROM NEIL KINNOCK
You can’t do that and ever be taken seriously again ( expect maybe by Dem voters in 3 counties in a slowly-dying mini-state )
WTF is wrong with the Dems? People outside the Odd Incestuous World of Delaware politics aren’t idiots, are they? Did I miss something……………..
Janos Hunyadi on August 23, 2008 at 5:50 PM
“STOLE” an entire speech, although maybe Biden was stoned
Google it, a capella. The transcript of Biden’s speech is in the NYT and WaPo archives, and Kinnock’s speech is on video somewhere. I heard the Kinnock speech, then read the coverage of Biden
It ended his 1988 campaign–as it should have. I’ve been studying poliltics since the 1960’s, and have never seen anything like this.

If Biden weren’t a chronic “borrower” of ideas, a fibber, and an exaggerator, then he could get by with two or three transgressions over a career, but he exaggerates all the time. He makes up stuff all the time. Then he just grins and says “I misspoke,” and for some reason the public just laughs, “Oh that Joe,” and forgives him.

I don’t think that poll takes into account the PUMA factor. I think a lot of PUMAs are going to vote for McCain out of spite. His having a female VP would bring in the rest. Maybe not Sarah Palin, but what about Christine Whitman? She has the executive experience as a governor; the business experience (she’s a director at Texas Instruments); She’s on the outs with the Bush admin, and she hails from NYC and NJ. The only downside is that she’s pro-choice, which may be the ultimate no-no now.
Kafir on August 23, 2008 at 6:54 PM
Neil Kinnock was the Opposition Leader in Parliament: the leader of the Labour Party during the 80s while Margaret Thatcher was PM.
He’s Welsh ( more or less ) and gave a routine speech about how his father would come home from the coal mines after a long hard day, but still have time to play football with little Neil. I think Biden is from Pa, and saw a chance to ‘relate’ ( a la Hillary Clinton telling kids in New Zealand that she was named after the Only Famous New Zealander: Sir Edmund Hillary, who climed Mt Everest in 1953 or so.
Problem there is that Hillary was born in 1946 or so
Hillary made a lying remark in a foreign country to children; Biden made an entire speech in a presidential campaign. There are lies, and then there are Enormous Lies

Deep down in his inner soul, this man is haunted by his own ineptness; this man is angry at his own country; this man is 8-12 years away from being ready to run a national campaign for potus. Talk all the cheap crap you want alphie, your candidate will still be tanking despite your desperation & denial…

BTW alphie,
I dare you to listen to Rush Limbaugh on Monday. Joe Biden has as many (or more) skeletons in the closet than Hillary, and that is saying a lot. Rush Limbaugh has a library of sound bites and information on Biden in his own words… It’s going to be a field day; open season on one Mr. Joe Biden. Open season on one Mr. Barack Hussein Obama has already started, in case you didn’t notice. The only positive about Mr. Biden, is that he is not the typical sissy that comes with most Liberal men.
Keemo on August 23, 2008 at 7:04 PM
The poll notwithstanding, Palin for VP? I’d vote for a candidate for POTUS if he had a qualified female VP running mate without hesitation… but a wholly unqualified bitter female with a personal vendetta who uses her Queenship powers to lash out at people for personal reasons? NEVER in a lifetime.
SilverStar830 on August 23, 2008 at 7:04 PM
You must be referring to Hillary.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 23, 2008 at 7:16 PM
Are you referring to the bitter gun and religion clinging rural voters with antipathy towards people different from themselves… or are you saying that you and your ilk are better than everyone else because you don’t live in the country… or are you saying that all Republicans are bitter gun & religion clinging antipathic country bumpkins?
I really don’t follow what you’re trying to say. I mean, regardless of who wins POTUS, American “bumpkins” are still being represented since they (whatever bumpkins are to you) still live in this country and are, in fact, your neighbors and maybe even among your friends and family.
And that’s truly not a very nice way to treat people who are different than you, Alphie. Some might even call that “elitist” and “snobby”. Hmmmm… where have I heard that before?
SilverStar830 on August 23, 2008 at 7:16 PM
Understand that poll was aimed at women. Men have no problem with a female VP but women are much harder on women candidates.
I think Palin could win them over. I think that 20% of women are hard core Feminists who would veiw a GOP candidate picking a woman as just a publicity stunt.
William Amos on August 23, 2008 at 7:19 PM
Did I read that right? 20% of women would be less likely to vote for McCain if he picked a woman?

Nope. I’m referring to the Alaskan Governor, Sarah Palin, whom is currently under investigation for using her Queenship powers to carry out a personal vendetta against her sister’s ex-husband and ultimately his boss.

Sometimes they pick a VP who has the same flaws as the prez candidate but exaggerated. Quayle is inarticulate preppy next to Bush, Gore is big southerner policy wonk to Clinton, and now Biden is freewheeling talker who puts foot in mouth all the time. They make the prez candidate’s worst qualities look almost normal by comparison.

The poll actually says 20% less likely vs. 15% more likely to vote McCain if he chose a woman, a net loss of 5% of women.
But, I still think it would be a net gain; African Americans and Hispanics were oversampled in the poll, and they strongly leaned against McCain.

I don’t care what polls have to say about it. Feminists will cheer and get on board is my prediction–except possibly black feminists who will most certainly have schizoid issues about it. Are you guys hearing these talking head pundits on tv twisting themselves into pretzels trying to put lipstick on this pig of a VP selection? It is laughable. We have to suspend a belief in reality and believe this alternate world that Biden is a good pick because:
1) He has been in Washington for 36 years, more than half his life and almost all of his adult life yet he is not part of the Washington DC insider’s club because he takes Amtrak home everynight to nearby Deleware.
2) He is such a regular guy, he knows the train conductors by name (subtle implied message, since almost every time I have been on a train and the conductors/porters are usually African Americans, Biden is just a regular guy who gets along with working minorities)
3) He was born in Sranton, PA (so?!!)
4) He lost his wife in a car accident 36 years ago, and his daughter. Yes, it was a tragedy, we all have tragedies in our lives. My brother died from AIDS.
5) He relates to the working class, his mom was on food stamps. When is the last time he grabbed a beer with Joe 6 pack at the corner bar? When was the last time he had to worry about making the rent himself? What a blowhard
6) He brings experience to the ticket but it doesn’t REALLY mean the top of the ticket lacked experience. After all the top of the ticket has the JUDGMENT to lead. Oh really? Are you trying to sell me swamp land, too?
7) Joe Biden knows the same foreign heads of states as McCain. Ummm, so, and John McCain is at the TOP of his party’s ticket, not in the VP slot.
These are the ridiculous statements that these blowhards are robotically parroting on all of the news channels. BARF!!!
By the way, what is this so called scandal someone was illuding to about Palin and her sister’s ex husband?
I really hope he picks Palin. Biden won’t be able to be a butthole during the debate to an awesome woman of these credentials without looking like the butthole we know him to be in real life.
