In the dead of night, Obama announces VP choice

I’m not sure a political campaign could possibly screw up a running-mate announcement as badly as Team Obama. The e-mail message that the world awaited for days finally came — at 4:50 am ET. As widely known late the evening before, Barack Obama picked Joe Biden to be his VP nominee, but apparently he didn’t want too many people to know it:
Ed –
I have some important news that I want to make official.
I’ve chosen Joe Biden to be my running mate.
Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois — the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago.
Let’s emphasize the timing of this announcement. Supposedly, Team Obama planned to release this when all the hip kids would have their cell phones at the ready and Blackberries in operation. At least, that was the excuse we heard when Wednesday, Thursday, and then Friday slipped away and Obama hadn’t made his announcement.
So when did the Magic Text Message come? After last call in every time zone in the lower 48. The people in Hawaii were awake, though.
Of course, picking Joe Biden would be a fairly good reason to bury the news. Biden has a long history of really foolish statements, and managed to set a record for kneecapping a campaign through a verbal fumble. On the day Biden launched his own presidential campaign, he made this reference to his new partner:
“I mean, you’ve got the first sort of mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a story-book, man,” Biden said.
Joe Biden also pushed the surge a little after John McCain publicly called for it, which conflicts with Barack Obama’s obstinate refusal to acknowledge it worked. However, Biden also called for the US to impose an ethnic partition in Iraq over the objections of the Iraqis themselves — a position he maintained during the entirety of his presidential campaign. The Biden Plan would have meant a real civil war in Iraq, and probably a genocide, as anyone who has studied the history of partitions would know.
Democrats want Biden because they want an attack dog, since Obama supposedly is too nice to fight back — despite spending the summer smearing John McCain as a racist. As I noted earlier this week, Biden told serial lies on the campaign trail in 1987 about his background and education, rudely dismissed a voter by telling him that he (Biden) had a “bigger IQ”, and most notoriously plagiarized a speech from British Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock. All of this will come out in this election.
But in the end, one has to wonder how Hope and Change and “cleaning up Washington” fits with selecting a running mate who’s been there longer than John McCain. More than half of Biden’s 66 years have been spent in the Senate; he took office during the Nixon Administration. All of those ads about how John McCain was responsible for the state of the nation because he’d been in office for over 25 years now apply equally to Barack Obama’s running mate. Why not pick a governor like Bill Richardson, who had plenty of foreign-policy experience, or even Kathleen Sebelius, who may have bridged the gap between himself and most of the women angry with Hillary Clinton’s defeat?
If Obama needs Biden as a sherpa, then maybe he shouldn’t have been running for President in the first place. That kind of admission maybe suits the timing of this announcement, too.
Update: Here’s some applicable video:

Everyone has to stop and realise reaping the rewards of a successful life is a sin to the socialist on the left.
Besides, Obama and Biden have found that graft money spends just as well and they don’t have to pay taxes on it.

He should have gone with Richardson – all the foreign policy experience with much less (no?) baggage.
Would it bother you to learn that his beard was germinated from Biden’s leftover hairplugs? Or, that Clinton sent Lewinsky to him for safe hiding way back when… ;-)

The excitement of Biden for VP is second only to watching paint dry. Now we have an empty suit and an empty mind on the Democratic ticket.

How did we get to the point that all of the candidates/running-mates (so far) are from the Congress with the lowest approval rating in history? So, they’re failing miserably in the Senate and choose to reward them with the Presidency? Well, I suppose the positive note of any of this, whether McCain or Obama wins, is that more slots will open up in the Senate in order to get some new blood in there.
Thank God for the “write-in” option on the ballot.

This Republican recession
I love it.
Can we, forevermore, refer to any economic period where the economy is growing as a Republican Recession.
Of course, we’ll save real recessions for when the economy shrinks for two consecutive quarters… but none of us actually want that… although it seems like the Dems are oftentimes hopeful about the same, eh?

Your socialist party leaders spend eight years trying to convince people that we are in a recession and feeding the fires of hate for this President, and you call it a Republican recession? If we are in a recession, it’s thanks to your party which is more than willing to destroy the economy under a Republican President so you can win the next election.
Again you prove yourselves to be the party of perpetual hate.

J:
Republican recession? When Nancy Pelosi took the reigns of power she promised to end the war, get rid of debt and over spending, create jobs, bring down oil and gas prices and in general save the planet.
Thus far, she and the Democratically controlled Congress have failed on all counts.
The deficit is roughly double what it was, gas and oil are higher and so is unemployment.
I don’t think we are really in a recession, it has been a long time since this country even saw a bad recession..however, the economy has had to weather some storms and the Democrats have thus far been no help. They have been too busy doing investigations and making bulls##t promises they have no intention of keeping.
Speaking of making promises they do not intend to keep, Obama picks an old white Senator as a running mate. Wow. Hope and Change and all that crap.

I disagree. I hope Bobby Jindal stays as far away from McCain as possible. Any gains to be made in terms of popularity would be lost due to any relation or perceived relation to the policies and baggage of McCain. If Jindal has any hope of becoming President, he needs to keep his distance, continue doing what he’s doing in Louisiana, and then make his move in 2012 under the aptly chosen title of “Conservative Republican”.

If nothing else, the Biden pick probably does lock in the inside-the-Beltway superdelegates from any possible last second effort by the Clintons to steamroll the convention’s presidential nomination. They won’t eat one of their own no matter what crazed scheme Hillary might have had for staging a floor vote revolt.
Other than that, the pick makes virtually no sense, since whatever Biden’s foreign policy credentials, his undisciplined campaigning style makes it just as likely Barack’s campaign will loose votes over damage control as it will gain them due to the experience factor.

Biden dropped out of the 2008 race for the Democratic presidential nomination after a poor finish in the Iowa caucuses, but not before he talked dismissively of joining someone else’s ticket.
“I am not running for vice president,” he said in a Fox interview. “I would not accept it if anyone offered it to me. The fact of the matter is I’d rather stay as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee than be vice president.“

I’m also sure that all the PUMAs’ heads exploded this morning. Obama has chased away about 30% of Democratic voters. The good news is that historians will be so consumed with this insane mistake they won’t even mention Rudy’s Florida/9-11 gamble.
Also, didn’t Barry say he was going to pick someone who challenged his positions or something like that? Does he really think Biden fits this bill? If so, then Senator Arugula is really out of touch.

Good grief; Biden? Rush had a field day with the ‘articulate and clean’ quote; Shanklin did a parody song for him that was hysterical. Obama must want to be made fun of to pick Biden. Well, unless McCain picks a total hoser as a VP, the debates ought to be downright entertaining. Biden lies like Clinton, but he goes to far because he’s such an arrogant pugnacious jack*ss. Goading him could lead to all kinds of notable quotables. Well, let’s hope McCain handles his announcement a little more..traditionally.

There’s your campaign ad right there.
Get the video of Biden making that comment. Show it. Then show it again, right up to the word “bright,” and immediately cut to an excerpt of this clip of Obama at a town hall event being reduced to an “and-and-and-uh” stammering mess when hit with a question he doesn’t have a slick answer for on the teleprompter. Cut back to a quick replay of Biden just saying “articulate and bright”, then quick-cut back to Obama saying “57 states.” Quick-cut back to Biden saying “and bright,” maybe repeat once or twice in the style of Max Headroom, and quick-cut back to another Obama unscripted foot-in-mouth moment. Quick-cut back to Biden saying the word “articulate,” quick-cut back to 3-4 seconds of stammering from that clip I linked above. Repeat a couple more times.
God, if I only had video editing skills and time … somebody please make this happen.

Pragmatism…
J_Gocht on August 23, 2008 at 11:06 AM
It’s not personal. I’m merely writing in my vote this year because I believe neither candidate is worthy. McCain, specifically, has the following flaws: lack of economic sense, to his own admission; failed to understand border security and immigration policy needs; according to Joseph Farah, “[i]n 2004, voters in his own state passed Proposition 200, requiring proof of citizenship before someone can vote or participate in state giveaway programs. Despite opposition led by McCain, the measure was approved by 56 percent of the vote, with close to 50 percent of Hispanics approving it;” he voted to confirm Ginsburg and Breyer to the Supreme Court; McCain-Feingold, which was an assault on free speech; his Global Warming rhetoric and policy ideas; his support for NAFTA; his willingness to consider the potentiality of a pro-choice running-mate; and his lack of understanding concerning the conduct of, and the enemy we’re fighting in, the war in Iraq, Afghanistan and the War on Terror, in general.
Now, if you can convince me otherwise that McCain is worthy of the Presidency, beyond the fact that he is not Obama, then I’m all ears.

I doubt the geezer will be popular enough with anyone to try and run for a second term, so his pick for the #2 spot must be conservative.
Hillery will be there in 2012, bet on it.
If Mitt is the VP, I will vote for Mitt.
