The inexplicable Chet Edwards boomlet

Could Barack Obama be this desperate? Or are pundits getting tired of waiting for the text message? The latest short-lister to be rumored for the #2 spot on the ticket is Texas Rep. Chet Edwards, who not only is a virtual unknown, he’s about as far from Obama as is possible on the issues:

Three days before the party gathers in Denver to nominate Obama for the fall campaign, several officials said Rep. Chet Edwards, whose district includes President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, had made the list of finalists. Sens. Joe Biden of Delaware and Evan Bayh of Indiana were also in the mix, as were Govs. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas — and unknown others Obama had managed to keep secret despite intense scrutiny. …

Edwards is a favorite of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who praised his ”extraordinary credentials” on ABC’s ”This Week” on Aug. 3 and said: ”I hope he will be the nominee.”

One Democratic official with knowledge of the conversation said Obama told Pelosi recently that she would be pleased with the choice. Other Democratic officials said he was on the short list. All spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss Obama’s selection process.

Edwards, chairman of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee, is a nine-term moderate Democrat representing the GOP-leaning Texas district. He is well-known in Texas but does not have a national profile.

Jim Geraghty imagines what the VP debate would sound like:

But the debate would consist almost entirely of the GOP vice-presidential candidate saying, “I agree with Chet’s old position, the one he had before he put his manhood in a blind trust and flip-flopped to agree with Obama’s liberal position.” Edwards would constantly be in the awkward position of defending positions he doesn’t agree with. Add that to the fact that 90+ percent of Americans know nothing about him, it’s a formula for disaster.

How far off is Edwards — the other Edwards — from Obama’s policies?

  • Voted for the Iraq War
  • Wants to drill off-shore
  • Wants to drill in ANWR
  • Opposes amnesty for illegal aliens
  • Opposes CAFE standards
  • Opposes gay marriage (which is actually not far from Obama’s own ambiguous position)

The heck with Obama.  Maybe John McCain may want to give Chet a call.

The mystery here is why Pelosi is pushing him, especially with the drilling positions Edwards has taken.  Of course, maybe Pelosi wants him out of the House when they return to vote on energy.

The only reason Obama would pick Edwards is to make himself look experienced.  Edwards has no national reach, no statewide constituency, and has no hope of carrying Texas for Obama.  This looks like one last head fake from Team Obama … or an act of sheer desperation.

Chet Edwards was pushed by Pelosi so I think Obama is simply paying him a complement by including his name in the veepstakes.

William Amos on August 22, 2008 at 1:31 PM

Oh, for Pete’s sake. If Obama doesn’t announce his pick soon, the pundits are going to start floating Rosie O’Donnell as the next possible dark horse. It’s gone past entertaining into the stupid zone.

aero on August 22, 2008 at 1:32 PM

Polar opposite from what I see. Or he could be a polar pander bear, maybe.

Total head fake. It’s going to be Hillary.

Apparently Barack Obama is too liberal for Barack Obama.

A choice like this will send the nutroots over the edge.

EJDolbow on August 22, 2008 at 1:34 PM

It’s simply being done as the first sign of goodwill between Obama and his perceived future partner in the legislative branch, Speaker Pelosi.

That’s all.

EduardoOTI on August 22, 2008 at 1:35 PM

start floating Rosie O’Donnell

Fire doesnt melt steel and that much crap doesnt float.

William Amos on August 22, 2008 at 1:35 PM

Why would The Bolshevik Bitch San Fran Nan push this guy?

[Chet] Edwards is a favorite of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who praised his ”extraordinary credentials” on ABC’s ”This Week” on Aug. 3 and said: ”I hope he will be the nominee.”

What does she have on this guy? or is he a REAL Manchurian Candidate..

DaveC on August 22, 2008 at 1:35 PM

He might be pro-drilling, per se, but he still wants to open up the valve on the strategic reserve and “punish” speculators – two positions that are in line with Obama.

pullingmyhairout on August 22, 2008 at 1:37 PM

Because he represents Crawford, Texas.

Brat on August 22, 2008 at 1:40 PM

Or a more compliant democrat maybe ?

William Amos on August 22, 2008 at 1:40 PM

Voted for the Iraq War

Ft. Hood is in his district.

Wants to drill off-shore
Wants to drill in ANWR

Oil and gas production are HUGE in his district. He’d be an idiot to have any other stance.

Opposes gay marriage (which is actually not far from Obama’s own ambiguous position)

Again, think “Waco,” “Baylor University” a Baptist university, btw. Conservative democrats rule the day in this part of Texas. To be for gay marriage would end his run as their representative.

Flip side, though, is that McCain gets to rerun a lot of hillary commercials from the primary saying that Barack is inexperienced and shame on Barack, etc.

I agree that Hillary is the only logical choice; but I’m not sure he can make it.

lorien1973 on August 22, 2008 at 1:44 PM

Will Obama please hurry up so we can get back to the business of the American people, namely why John McCain doesn’t know how many houses he owns?

Plzkthx.

fossten on August 22, 2008 at 1:45 PM

I heard from a reliable source he’s going to reach across the aisle and name Michelle Malkin as his VP. He needs a person of color as Obama is pretty light himself. Michelle is a little darker than Obama. She can bring home the minority vote. Michelle is all about race and identity politics.

Paul-Cincy on August 22, 2008 at 1:45 PM

Shows that Obama wants it both ways on the issues.
He is against offshore drilling, but then again, Edwards is for it…On and on.
Very dumb move for a liberal.

jencab on August 22, 2008 at 1:47 PM

George Clooney for VP!!! He thinks he knows everything anyway and is insufferable as heck. Perfection.

mjk on August 22, 2008 at 1:47 PM

Edwards was also a student of Phil Gramm at Texas A&M. Lots of great attack-dog material there. But this would be such a purely political play I don’t see how Obama could get away with it.

I think mentioning Edwards is a tip of the hat to Pelosi, but he will not be the pick. I know Obama’s campaign is uber-stupid, but I can’t believe it would be THIS stupid.

rockmom on August 22, 2008 at 1:48 PM

Like I said in the other thread, we’re screwed if Obama chooses a woman and McCain doesn’t.

It’s a no-win situation for him.

We’re past that. We now need to talk about how racist John McCain is for adopting a child. Or how mean he is for making fun of Paris Hilton. Or how he totes doesn’t know Madonna and George Clooney’s thoughts on Israel and Iran.

mjk on August 22, 2008 at 1:51 PM

Given his many contra-obamist positions, he might be a better choice for McCain than Lieberman.

iam7545 on August 22, 2008 at 2:09 PM

Edwards is “moderate” and in this part of Texas – he has to be. Good talker and does a weekly phone session on the local AM morning talker. Any further left though and he won’t be elected; however, he will tow the party line. A couple of weeks back he sent out a mailer regarding the cost of oil and opening the strategic petroleum reserve. He knows better and he wasted our money sending it the glossy flyer on party propaganda. Baylor and Texas A&M are the most liberal parts of the district and neither university are liberal, though you do have some flakes… He’s also good at securing pork for A&M – a lot of which goes to security training and research.

esperpento on August 22, 2008 at 2:09 PM

Good point Marcus. I don’t know how Obama can square that one.

Edwards was also a junior golf champion. There’s something the average American can really relate to.

rockmom on August 22, 2008 at 2:26 PM

From what I’ve seen on some other lib sites, choosing Chet could indeed lead to a blow-out, for McCain. They simply will not allow him to choose someone who voted for the Iraq war. Every debate this man attended getting to the nomination he was putting himself up on the “I’m too superiorly intelligent to ever have even considered voting yes” pedestal. Hillary and Bill would personally throttle him. Unnnnnn-believable.

Marcus on August 22, 2008 at 2:27 PM

It’s not just you. All the shiny wrappings and ribbons are dull and crumpled now. The convention is going to be Olympic caliber stagecraft, but the “star” has been revealed to be a telepromter-addicted puppet who promises a Dead Baby in Every Linen Closet.

RushBaby on August 22, 2008 at 2:27 PM

Maybe he was going to take John and he has a few million dollars worth of Obama-Edwards 08 stuff in a warehouse.

RW_theoriginal on August 22, 2008 at 2:38 PM

It’s empirical anyway, so I’m not going to link to it, but there are studies that indicate that only massively egotistical men (and women) aspire to seek the presidency. Both McCain and Obama are willing to consider ANYBODY that they believe will help them win, and damn the political differences. Obama is being painted (appropriately) as an extremist, so why NOT pick a very conservative VEEP?

lionheart on August 22, 2008 at 2:39 PM

There me be something to this Chet Edwards idea. Last week Obama said he wanted to select someone who ‘challenged his basic assumptions’ and then would create a lively debate within the White House. None of the other possible candidates would challenge any of the liberal dogma points. This Chet guy would (allegedly). I guess we could then have a Mad Magazine/Penthouse style satire feature called ‘The Chronicles of Barry and Chester.’

JonPrichard on August 22, 2008 at 2:47 PM

Good. They will make Obama/Edwards lawn signs and a lot of people will think they’re referencing Silky Pony and won’t for that ticket.

carbon_footprint on August 22, 2008 at 3:26 PM

Not all that surprising that Chet won here outta the gate, he was hand picked by Marvin Leath back in the days when (reasonably) conservative Dems won Congressional seats in Texas. A couple crossed over, like Ralph Hall.

Chet won’t though, he never really had to.

daveintexas on August 22, 2008 at 3:27 PM

Obama would have a time handling the strain of putting up with two strong willed women!

In her first two years in Congress, Jackson-Lee’s staff reportedly had a 180 percent turnover rate, which was attributed by the Houston Press to overwork and bullying by the congresswoman. [9] Accordingly, House staffers unofficially voted her the “second meanest” member of the body as well as naming her “Biggest Windbag” and “Show Horse” in a 2006 Washingtonian article. [10]

Jackson-Lee has called for the names given to hurricanes and tropical storms to reflect all racial groups, including African-Americans. A racially charged e-mail misrepresenting her actual statements on this subject has circulated widely on the Internet. [11] In response, Bernard Goldberg included her in his book 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America.[1]

This Chet guy seems more GOP than Dem. But, Obama’s young and given his basic philosophy of taking the easy way, he’ll prgobably live forever. So Chet’s chances of bing Pres are slim to none.

If this is his pick and he didn’t bother to bother with La Hillary, then Nancy Pelosi is for SURE the queen bee of DC.

tomas on August 22, 2008 at 5:52 PM

Mary in LA on August 22, 2008 at 8:44 PM

The mystery here is why Pelosi is pushing him, especially with the drilling positions Edwards has taken.

Maybe it’s because Nancy is going to need an ally when the Dems try to throw her out of her leadership position after they lose in November. Meanwhile she can pretend that she’s a moderate in favor of drilling by pushing his candidacy.
