New RNC ad: Being a friend to Hispanics means supporting amnesty

And so, after two years of pounding Geraldo Rivera for reducing a complex issue to its lowest, crudest, most demagogic common denominator, we find that our own party leadership agrees with him. Do you have Hispanic friends? No you don’t, not if you’re one of the 69 percent who prioritizes border enforcement over, ahem, “comprehensive immigration reform.” The boss has an English translation but I’d like confirmation from our Spanish-speaking readers, as I simply can’t believe the RNC would stoop to this. Is this an accurate rendering of the beginning?
How do you know someone is a friend?
You know because they stand up and defend you when it is hard.
When Hispanics needed a friend in Congress during the immigration debate… Who stood up? Who spoke out?
John McCain.
Note: This isn’t Michelle’s translation, it’s the version that the RNC’s sending around, so it expresses their intent even if the Spanish version doesn’t precisely match. Exit question: What’s the difference between the insinuation here and the insinuation … here?

McCain is not perfect–he’s goofed up a lot.
But he has never supported amnesty.
Conservatives would be more credible if we used words accurately.

Everyone knows McCain supported immigration reform, which included amnesty. The party is doing what it has to to get its guy elected. Remember that ad where McCain was “challenging his party” that was paid for… by the party?

misterpeasea on August 22, 2008 at 7:59 PM
Wait a second – when HotAirians speak out in favor of a hard-line immigration policy, only Hispandering reverse-racist party traitors would accuse them of being anti-Hispanic! But when a Republican claims to have spoken up in favor of Hispanics, the HotAir line is that it must mean he’s in favor of “amnesty.” I thought we all knew that opinion in the Hispanic community was diverse?
So who’s pandering to whose emotions here?
CK MacLeod on August 22, 2008 at 8:00 PM
why are they doing this???? McCain can’t run to the left of obama on this despite his record. I can guarantee whomever suggested this crap at the RNC is not a Hispanic republican. A Hispanic republican is already to the right of McCain on this issue.

McCain really has a knack for making this difficult. Just when you get over the last poke in they eye, resolve to hold your nose and vote for him, he pulls something. Guess we could have expected pandering to illegals.
But, hey! If they want me to support people who break our laws, then I guess I don’t have to bother with being a law-abiding citizen.
Free at last! Free at last!!
Thanks, Mac. Thanks, RNC.

jgapinoy on August 22, 2008 at 8:06 PM
McCain supports amnesty. Tell me something I don’t know. The RNC knows it has most Republicans voting for him because there’s nowhere else to go, so they’re attempting to round-up the Hispanic vote. Just like Obama was fine flip-flopping on FISA. The people who were outrageously outraged will still vote for him, while he managed to get rid of a “weak on national security” talking point” and appeals to moderates.

Oh for heavens sake. I am an immigrant/naturalized citizen, and never once in the whole immigration “reform” mess did I hear any pandering to my country of origin.
I’m going home to start drinking. RNC, F*CK YOU RUNNING.
RushBaby on August 22, 2008 at 8:07 PM
It’s not that easy. Getting elected doesn’t entitle you to call your own base a bunch of racists.
I’m not sure what your point is here. My point is that illegal immigration is not a racial issue. Attempts to turn it into one are Rivera-esque racial demagoguery. Which is what the RNC’s engaged in here by equating a position on immigration with being anti-Hispanic.
Allahpundit on August 22, 2008 at 8:07 PM
$5000 fine, geographic & bureaucratic hoops to jump through, & waiting. Too lenient, but not amnesty.

I wish I could be treated so leniently.
I wish I only had to pay 3 of the last 5 years of income tax. That would really help right now.
I wish I could get in-state tuition in states where I was, you know, not a citizen.
Not to mention Social Security when I wasn’t even a citizen of the US.
Nope, not amnesty. Just encouragement to more non-citizens to come on over.
misterpeasea on August 22, 2008 at 8:10 PM
Except that, per his latest bill, the government had to fingerprint and find a reason to refuse the illegal alien the ability to stay…within 24 hours. If they didn’t, the illegal gained legal status at least for the short term. That put him/her on the path to legality.
amerpundit on August 22, 2008 at 8:11 PM
The obvious question then is: If John McCain was standing up for them, against whom was he standing on their behalf? It wasn’t the media, they wanted it. It wasn’t Business, they wanted it. It wasn’t D.C., they wanted it. That’s right, our candidate stood up against those whom he is now seeking support. You’re a shmuck, McCain (insofar that this ad speaks for you, which I’m pretty sure it does).

It’s probably just a little lower than the amount of women who vote for GOP. Should the GOP not try to appeal to women?

…………. did anyone think that conservatives ever forgot this? This issue is still on the table, it never went away. Sure, we are dealing with $4.50/gal gas and it’s ripple effect through the economy, Mother Russia, and Victory in Iraq, but securing the borders of this country has never gone away, no matter what the MSM wants you to think.

The problem is that Obama was starting from the far left and working his way in. So the nutroots can pass off his flip-flops as general election pandering. McCain can’t get away with that since already starting so far away from the base on so many issues. They’re just not that devoted to him to begin with.
I hate to say this, but it’d be better if he just didn’t talk about this at all. Arg.

It is my opinion that if you came to this country illegally you should never be given the opportunity to come back legally. Why should we trust people who from the get-go had no respect for our laws? This isn’t a racial issue; it’s a respect issue.

Though no federal statistics are kept on murders or any other crimes committed by illegal aliens, a number of groups have produced estimates based on data collected from prisons, news reports and independent research.
Twelve Americans are murdered every day by illegal aliens, according to statistics released by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa. If those numbers are correct, it translates to 4,380 Americans murdered annually by illegal aliens. That’s 21,900 since Sept. 11, 2001.
But the carnage wrought by illegal alien murderers represents only a fraction of the pool of blood spilled by American citizens as a result of an open border and un-enforced immigration laws.
While King reports 12 Americans are murdered daily by illegal aliens, he says 13 are killed by drunk illegal alien drivers – for another annual death toll of 4,745. That’s [another] 23,725 since Sept. 11, 2001.

Oh come on! What BS you are trying to spin here? It failed when McCain tried it and it fails now. Since nobody, even liberals like McCain and Kennedy, were stupid enough to actually use the “a” word, the bill was called a reform bill and filled with bogus wickets called a path to citizenship for all the criminals all in the country. Peel back all the layers and loopholes and you had an amnesty bill.
I swear everytime McCain seems to be making progress with the GOP base- like his appearance at Saddleback, he comes out with this stuff which does nothing but alienate the bitter old bastard from his supposed constituents. Much more of this crap and I’m staying home so that the only idiots who vote for McCain are the ones who have no defense for the man but the fact he isn’t Obama.

Hey McCain and RNC, buy a clue. You’re not going to be able to out-pander Obama on the issue of what to do with millions of illegal aliens. He’s already promised them amnesty, open borders, and lots of U.S. government hand-outs (including “free” coverage under his universal health care plan — those 47 million uninsured “Americans” Obama talks about includes 12 million illegals). So just quit trying to get votes from the pro-amnesty crowd. They’re already bought and paid for by Obama.
But you might want to think about trying to appeal to another Hispanic group. They’re here legally, and they have learned to speak English — so you won’t need to do the commercials in Spanish. They don’t like amnesty plans, because they understand that rewarding illegal behavior only promotes disrespect for the law and guarantees even more illegal behavior in the future. They live all over this country, some of them live right here in my neighborhood in Arizona. And by the way, they don’t like to be called Hispanic-Americans or Mexican-Americans; they prefer to be called Americans, because that’s how they think of themselves. It would be nice if you acknowledged them, McCain, but since they tend to be conservatives, I guess you can’t be bothered.

John McCain: That is a very good question and yes when I become el Presidente I will put up a physical fence. What will it look like? Well it will run the full length of the border and have special security gates every 100 feet.
All the security gates will have on them:
1) Press one for Spanish (with a response of “Welcome Amigo, my country is your country and please take a free map to the wonderful plantation owner employer of your choice. Also please feel free to enroll you children in our schools and demand that they be taught in Spanish and please also feel free to avail yourself of all the free medical care that you want. Guess I’m a lot more low tolerance..but then again, I was sick of McCain poormouthing the President on the war with Biden and Hagel all the time, and the Gang of 14 really frosted me; so amnesty was pretty much the last straw. Seriously though, the fact that they’re running cr*p like this, means their internals must be REALLY good so they don’t care about alienating the ‘racists’ in the base. You guys that are holding your nose for him, I hope you understand what’s coming. And he’s going to be relying on the Democrats in the house to help him pass it, along with the Republicans who don’t want to abandon their President. And keep in mind, amnesty isn’t Backdoor John’s only bad issue that he can hose us with: remember, he’s another global warming nutjob..and I’ll bet you he’ll drop drilling as soon as he can. Yeah, nobody wants amnesty; the fact that your candidate and now the RNC leadership seem hellbent for leather to pass an amnesty over what people want is why there are so many comments about it. It p*sses people off when they are ignored on an issue by people soliciting our votes and our money. Look, you like McCain; he has an R next to his name and that makes you happy to vote for him. Other people get riled about amnesty; global warming, and pro choice vp candidates. We’re not democrats; we don’t do lockstep voting.

And that is precisely my point. Why the hell doesn’t McCain address Hispanic voters in English, instead of pandering to the larger Hispanic community which includes so many illegals, and non-English speakers. That’s what annoys me, and what others have said. It pre-supposes that American citizens of Hispanic backgrounds favor illegal immigration, favor not learning English, etc.

One day, a man named John McCain looked around at the senate where he was a long time senator and decided that he wanted a change. So he set out on a journey through caucuses and primaries. He climbed over some candidates and went around others until he reached the Republican nomination.
The coming Presidential race would be a tough one, and so John McCain stopped to reconsider the situation. He couldn’t see any way to win on his own. So he thought that he would probably lose.Suddenly, he saw some naive conservatives blogging at a conservative web site. He decided to ask them for help in winning the election. “Would you be so kind, my friends, as to give me a hand in winning the election?”
“Well now, Senator McCain! How do we know that if we help you, you wont betray us?” asked the conservatives hesitantly.
“Because,” senator McCain replied, “If I betray you, then I would fail too, for you see I cannot govern without your support!”
Now this seemed to make some sense to the conservatives. But they asked. “What about when you get close to being elected? You could still start to betray us and might still win anyway!”
“This is true,” agreed senator McCain, “But I might well not be able to get enough conservative turnout to win the presidency!”
“Alright then…how do we know you wont just wait till you get elected and then betray us?” said the conservatives.
“Ahh…,” crooned senator McCain, “Because you see, once you’ve helped to make me president, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with betrayal, now would it?”
So many conservatives agreed to help senator McCain get elected president. He edged out Barak Obama in a nail-biting race and was inaugurated in January of the year 2009. Now president McCain immediately got a democratic majority in congress to enact full amnesty for all illegals in the United States and all of their relatives. He also nominated Hillary Clinton to the U.S. Supreme court along with Senator Teddy Kennedy’s wife. Both were confirmed.
.
“You fool!” croaked the conservatives, “You have betrayed us and you will never get a second term. Why on earth did you do that?”
Now president McCain shrugged and snickered and did a little jig..
“I could not help myself. It is my nature.”

By a jury that favored him. McCain was cleared by a Democratic-controlled Congress.

People say its too difficult and expensive to deport 13 million illegal aliens. I don’t. How much to we give to Mexico each year in foreign aid? I say we deduct out of it to pay for bus tickets. I think you would suddenly find Mexico preventing people from crossing over (since we would deport them right back at their “expense”). Plus it would help out bus companies, and we would even get some of that back in the form of taxes. It’s a win-win-win- (ok, I lost track) opportunity!

and benedict arnold was a very good general and patriot at one time. i dont believe that mccains behavior is treason, but dont act like serving in the military is blanket protection.

Benedict Arnold has a more impressive service record than Juan McCain. It didn’t let him off the hook for his treason either.
Get over the “R” by his name & watch how he’s trying to hand over you child’s birthright to the highest bidder.

Saying John McCain was friendly to hispanics when it was politically hard is accurate. I absolutely disagree with McCain-Kennedy, and made phone calls and faxes from home against it (learned to use a new Brother MFC thingy then, actually!). But I don’t think this ad calls me a racist.
It’d democrats who call each other racists when they disagree on policy, right? Lindsay Graham gets hysterical and squealed that we were bigots (he flies off the handle about lots of stuff, like the Clinton impeachment hearings where he became so popular with lots of folks; I find it off-putting) but … I don’t recall McCain saying anything more than it could appear racist/anti-hispanic to oppose guest worker provisions or something.
Also remember George Bush has been pro-amnesty all along. Romney and Rudy were pro-amnesty. Rudy was still my initial fave for president. shrug.
And if you look at the article in headlines, illegals are going home on their own. Surprise, surprise … once the Bush Administration started enforcing the laws already on the books, folks started to go home.

Just stop talking about immigration. It does you no good.

It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly native criminal class except Congress.
