The “Social Security Trust Fund” to which you allude is a bunch of IOU’s the gov’t has written to itself while taking the money collected from the tax to pay benefits now. Social Security is a Ponzi scheme. If you were to structure your own pension fund the way SocSec is, you would wind up in jail. Ponzi schemes work for everyone involved as long as the pool of participants keeps expanding. SocSec worked and works as long as there is an expanding population. As soon as the population stops expanding, the scheme collapses.

You can become a millionaire very quickly by structuring your own finances like SocSec. Take all your money out of your savings account to pay for big ticket items now and in it’s place in a safe deposit box leave yourself an IOU for $1,000,000 to be paid 10 years from now from a future revenue stream which you project will cover the IOU when it matures.

Social Security is anything but sound–by 2037 it is expected to run at an annual deficit of $30 trillion (according to the Social Security Administration).

As for my parents, they made sure to plan so that others would not have to care for them. It’s a simple matter of responsibility–caring for oneself is what an adult does. If they are ever in a position of needing my financial assistance, however, I am fully prepared to give it. What I will not do is look to strangers to care for me or mine.
