New Obama ad: Hey, McCain’s old

posted at 3:24 pm on August 22, 2008 by Allahpundit

Yes, ostensibly it’s another shot at McCain for owning two more homes than John Kerry does, but you don’t need your Josh Marshall Secret Subtext Decoder Ring to figure out what forgetfulness plus the need for motorized transport around the golf course means. I’m honestly curious to see what this line of attack does for Obama in the polls; I think it’s doomed to fail, thanks partly to Maverick’s POW suit of armor and partly to the Dems’ exposure from having nominated a near-billionaire last time (assuming the RNC ever gets around to reminding the public of that), but we’ll see. Hopefully we’ll get some weekend polls about it, otherwise the numbers will be distorted by the convention. Speaking of which, McCain’s team claims it expects a 15-point bounce for Obama. I’m thinking more like eight.

Exit question: What’s the conservative counterpart to liberals’ perennial attacks on the GOP nominee as being “out of touch”? Attacks on lefty patriotism, I guess?

the ad is almost a twofer..

elitist and ageist..

Old people know John F. McCain wants to trash Social Security just like little Bush wanted to do, terrye.

I think McCain’s “old people” vote will be limited to millionaires.

Why is no one focusing on the lies/distortions about McCain’s “$5 million” comment. The funny part is, when he made the joke at Saddleback, he predicted it would be used this way. But this particular ad took it to another level… Setting aside the fact that they’re being dishonest in other ads for saying that he really believes “rich” is defined as having $5 million… this ad says that McCain classifies all people making less than $5 million as “middle class”. This is a flat out lie.

I would love to see McCain or someone else release a video of McCain answering Warren’s question, without edits, and right after the part where he says “The point I am trying to make here, seriously, is – and I am sure that comment I made will be distorted-” and is cut to the democrat’s rapid response ad, where they select answers, cuts them off before he was finished, re-arranges the order of his comments to make it look like he said something he didn’t. They are used to this, have done this several times, deliberately, they distort and lie about McCain, and they have been doing it for months. And they get away with it.

That’s because Barry O and his supporters have figured out that the only way they can win elections is by lying to the voting public about who they are and what they believe.

AZCoyote on August 22, 2008 at 5:19 PM

Reagan held up much better in the second debate. Deftly brushing aside the issue of age, Reagan jokingly promised not to “exploit for political purposes my opponent’s youth and inexperience.” This was the Reagan that voters recognized: witty, confident, presidential.

I thought the lefties like old people.

Also, old people vote in droves, and are very feisty.

They like heroes.

Also, I know way more older millionaires than young ones. Plus, most young and middle aged people I know want to become millionaires.

If only we could be so lucky. If you do the math on the return on your Social Security “investment,” you’d be better off keeping your money yourself in a passbook savings account–particularly when you consider that the Social Security system is mathematically impossible to pull off. Only the economically illiterate believe Social Security could ever be a financially sound system.

McCain is old!

We know he is old, he has admitted he is old, and he has even joked about it! The comedians have told us how old he is, even the media has slipped it into their stories as sly comments when they don’t outright state it.

McCain embraces his joke line! (…)
Obama, either out of fear or out of arrogance, has gone out of his way to deny every single perceived error or flaw he may have. Doing so makes it appear that he really thinks he is a perfect and flawless god.

He lost the ability to pick the laugh line

McCain’s smart if he avoids what makes Obama so stupid.

BHO is the epitome of “stuck on stupid”.

No matter how many years Obama accumulates under his belt, he will always exude repulsive, elitist audacity compounded by his lack of both wisdom and appreciation for our American Constitutional heritage. Obama’s malleable nature is confined to ebb and flow within the stupidity rut. He may mask himself in varying degrees and fashions, but he remains THE IDIOT.

Perhaps you’ve managed to sleep through the Democrat wailing and gnashing of teeth to save Social Security. Why does something that works as fabulously as you seem to believe need saving? As I suggested earlier, perhaps you should do the math. Better yet, take a course or two in economics. While you’re at it, take courses in logic and debate–I have encountered few as desperately in need of them as you.

Ah Good, alphie is around.

Hey alphie, how is your boy Barack doin’ in the polls? I heard he was 5 points down. If this were election day, that would be a landslide.

Quite frankly alphie, I think the Presidency is above Obama’s pay grade. He’s much better off plotting to blow stuff up with his buddies at the weather underground, or shakedown some old lady with Rezko. Are you glad you support such a fascist little ch**cken**it? I bet you just can’t wait for Commisar Lightworker to Lay his Hands on you, you dirty, dirty boy.

I can’t believe you follow such a feeble little windbag. I mean, if you’re going to buy into pure evil, at least the neocons aren’t effeminate little softies waiting for a hero to save them.

As for Social Security, it is sound.

Medicare can be fixed by transferring some “Defense” pork to it.

Or y’all can always pay for your parent’s medical needs out of your own pockets.

alphie on August 22, 2008 at 7:31 PM

One poll composite vs the other. One difference: rcp has McCain winning. Pollster doesnt have Obama winning.

And you said he’s back up. His double digit lead has vanished. He’s within the margin of error. Half a billion dollars just doesnt buy elections for unqualified vapor cloud candidates like it used to.

Social security is in the red after 2017. If it were sound, Obama wouldnt be proposing to lift the tax cap, now would he.

Show me the $57 trillion in defense pork.

And Im still waiting for you to substantiate your “war crimes” allegation against McCains father in law. Got it yet?

Chuck Schick on August 22, 2008 at 7:42 PM

alphie on August 22, 2008 at 7:31 PM

Social Security is anything but sound–by 2037 it is expected to run at an annual deficit of $30 trillion (according to the Social Security Administration).

As for my parents, they made sure to plan so that others would not have to care for them. It’s a simple matter of responsibility–caring for oneself is what an adult does. If they are ever in a position of needing my financial assistance, however, I am fully prepared to give it. What I will not do is look to strangers to care for me or mine.

DrMagnolias on August 22, 2008 at 7:44 PM

Social Security has been putting trillions of dollars away to provide for any tax revenue shortfalls, Chuck.

It will be sound for longer than any of will live.

As for McCain’s Sugar Mommy’s Sugar Daddy being convicted:

In 1948, the Hensley brothers were convicted of falsifying records to conceal, government lawyers contended, the illegal distribution of hundreds of cases of liquor. The sales occurred from 1945 to 1947, postwar years when liquor was rationed and in short supply.

Social Security has been putting trillions of dollars away to provide for any tax revenue shortfalls, Chuck.

It will be sound for longer than any of will live.

It’s spent. It was made usuable by the general fund back in the 60′s to pay for Medicare by your party. Do your research if you don’t believe me.

Odd, your own quote says:

The sales occurred from 1945 to 1947, postwar years when liquor was rationed and in short supply.

Did you mean a “postwar” crime?

And as I pointed out before, Hensley’s 100% legal business was started over a decade after this happened. Ill-gotten is wrong.

Chuck Schick on August 22, 2008 at 8:31 PM

alphie

The “Social Security Trust Fund” to which you allude is a bunch of IOU’s the gov’t has written to itself while taking the money collected from the tax to pay benefits now. Social Security is a Ponzi scheme. If you were to structure your own pension fund the way SocSec is, you would wind up in jail. Ponzi schemes work for everyone involved as long as the pool of participants keeps expanding. SocSec worked and works as long as there is an expanding population. As soon as the population stops expanding, the scheme collapses.

You can become a millionaire very quickly by structuring your own finances like SocSec. Take all your money out of your savings account to pay for big ticket items now and in it’s place in a safe deposit box leave yourself an IOU for $1,000,000 to be paid 10 years from now from a future revenue stream which you project will cover the IOU when it matures.
