New Florida Democrat ad: Hey, McCain’s rich — and so’s his wife

Oh my. The One was quite insistent last month about “civilians” not being dragged into the campaign, wasn’t he? Well, we’ve been through this tapdance before with McCain: State party attacks candidate’s wife, party nominee refuses comment lest he be forced to play “referee” for everyone on his side, and all’s well. Like I’ve said before, the market is perfectly capable of dealing with this tactic. If the Dems want to chance a backlash by needling Maverick’s “sugar mommy” a tiny bit, so be it. No need for histrionic faux outrage of the sort the left specializes in, although of course Team McCain’s obliged. And right on cue, here it is.

Housegate is the stupidest talking point, ever.

How many little hovel’s does Kerry own?
Also, why attacking Mc’s wife? I thought spouses were off limit’s.

Every time they show McCain next to Bush show Obama next to Rev. Wright, Farakkhan, Ayres, or Rezko.
Chakra Hammer on August 22, 2008 at 5:51 PM
Hey, Obama’s rich, so is his wife.
Hey, Obama’s donors are on billionnaire row. Did you know that? Some are husbands, and some are wives.
Hey, John Kerry is rich, but his wife, Mrs. Heinz is even richer.
Hey, Bill Clinton is rich. Hillary is no Cinderella either.
Hey, did you know that Soros is a billionnaire?
Hey, Warren Buffet is the 2nd richest man in the world?
Hey, did you see Bill Gates on all those Fortune magazine covers? He’s really rich.
Hey, did you know those pretty Hollywood people who give to Obama are very rich? Some are men, and some are women, and some are even married, to each other.
Oh, did you know that Chris Dodd is rich?
Do you think any of the people who run for the presidency are poor?
My favorit question of all – what’s wrong with being rich?
Entelechy on August 22, 2008 at 5:52 PM
What a clueless crew up there in DNCville. This meme is a dead end.
leftnomore on August 22, 2008 at 5:55 PM
Yes, yes, it’s my “favorite” question.
I forgot, did you know the Kennedys were, are, and will be very rich?
Oh, and my favorite rich subject, my bud, Al Gore – did you know he lives in veeeery big and expensive houses, which are not green?
Entelechy on August 22, 2008 at 5:55 PM
Hopefully at the convention McCain will push the issue hard: Republicans will never criticize American citizens for honest success and achieving the American dream, etc., and the belief that all American’s aspire to greatness blah blah drives them.
DaveS on August 22, 2008 at 5:56 PM
Yeah, that will really anger all of the people living in Boca Raton, Naples and South Beach.
Star20 on August 22, 2008 at 5:56 PM
Evidently nothing as long as their money is supporting Obama. Let’s play a game during the Dem convention. We’ll count rich people.
Connie on August 22, 2008 at 5:56 PM
This class warfare will nip them in the rich/poor arses.
It’s so un-American, and every Joe/Mary wants to be better off, and be “rich” in one way or another. If this is all they have, they are indeed very poor on the left side, in more ways than one.
Entelechy on August 22, 2008 at 5:57 PM
That clip of Cindy McCain talking about flying around Arizona was, as usual, truncated and taken out of context. She was talking about how when McCain first ran for senate, she took flying lessons, because in large states you have to fly around to campaign for statewide office. She flew him to campaign events.
She wasn’t talking about ordinary travel. The lefties have been have freaking over this clip for awhile, and it’s deliberately edited to be misleading.
juliesa on August 22, 2008 at 5:57 PM
So we should want our President to be somebody who has not achieved the American Dream?
Failure and poverty is what we want in our leaders?
EJDolbow on August 22, 2008 at 5:58 PM
This Obama realy IS stupid, huh? Mav should say “you really wanna go there?”. And he will.
LtE126 on August 22, 2008 at 5:58 PM
Did you hear the latest? Michael Moore, Al Gore, Barbra Streisand and John Edwards have donated all their money to the poor. They’ve sold their estates and moved into regular apartments, in the name of the common good. They are pleading with the rest of you rubes (those making over $133,000 and voting for McCain), to lead by example.
Entelechy on August 22, 2008 at 5:59 PM
Definitely on the list, but most of these fade from memory.
What’s interesting about this one is how desperate the Dems were to seize on it, and how totally coordinated and overboard their attack has been from top to bottom. They clearly were waiting to seize on something, anything, no matter how trivial, no matter the risk – kind of like the Russians waiting for a provocation to launch their invasion of Georgia.
CK MacLeod on August 22, 2008 at 6:00 PM
The most important takeaway on this is it removes restrictions on Michelle Obama, creating a neat entrance into the Blackwell scandal. I really don’t understand why the donks want to open themselves up like this.

They’re calling McCain an elitist, like we did to Obama and Lurch. If the shoe fits, he’s gonna have to wear it. So many of our pols are.
JiangxiDad on August 22, 2008 at 6:02 PM
For whatever it’s worth, I think every battle-scarred veteran who had to endure the kind of pain McCain went through for his country should be given a house or two and a check for $10 million, courtesy of the U.S. Government.
McCain returned home but a shell of a man. If Cindy’s wealth gave him a far better and more comfortable life, she deserves our accolades.
Eat that Obama.
fogw on August 22, 2008 at 6:06 PM
Hmmm, another Baracky flip-flop.
Wow, what a stunning revelation…-YAWWWWWN-
What’s next, Cindy McCain known to get her nails done on a weekly basis? The horror!
Bishop on August 22, 2008 at 6:06 PM
The main difference between McCain and Kerry on this point is that Republicans generally don’t fear and hate the wealthy, recognizing as we do that the richest of us carry this nation through the exorbitant taxes they pay.
When you spend a great deal of your time tearing down the rich and then nominate one of the super-wealthy, you run the risk of looking like hypocrites. When you spend your time trying to encourage wealth-building and financial success, you don’t look quite so silly for nominating one of them to lead you.
Besides which, John and Cindy probably put as much into charity every year as the Obamas earn between them.

He wears nice shoes? I’ll bet a good pair of Nike’s worn by a local gang-banger probably cost as much and they’re imported too! So I guess Mac is Imelda Marcos now. What a lame idea. The problem is the Democrats have a long track record of turning the least offensive statement into a demagogue-fest. Macaca anyone? Is this McCain’s Macaca moment? It only works if the electorate lets it happen I guess.
JonPrichard on August 22, 2008 at 6:10 PM
Are we suppose to hate the rich now? That ad is absolutely infantile, its on the level of a schoolyard taunt. The idea in the good old USA is not to be jealous of the rich but become rich yourself.
Only a Marxist/commie/socialist class-warfare artist would even mention it.

Poorly done too.
McCain should make an ad of Cindy visiting the orphanages in third world nations and caring for “the lease among us”.
She even adopted one of the “least among us”.
Let’s go down this road. The list is long on the Dem side… starting with the Kennedy’s, Kerry’s, Pelosi’s, Reid’s, … on and on and on…
Last I knew, it was not a crime to have money. It will be if the big ZERO is elected.

These ads are dumb, but the China comments could be the thing that actually loses the election for Obama. I mean, puts him away for good. A commercial in heavy rotation on cable here in NV talks about how bad Wal Mart is because 70% of their products come from China. I believe it lists the poison pet food and lead paint toys in there too. And it was put out by some big labor union.
so with his “China is better than us” comment he exhibits communist ass-kissing (piss off conservatives and moderates) and disses American labor. And offends folks concerned with human rights.
But I have to thank Barry for running ads insulting Ralph Reed (powerful and popular former president of, I believe, the Christian Coalition), successful property owners (Rush Limbaugh etc), and now senior citizens. Thanks for helping to motivate so many people to come together to support John McCain.

The question was asked at the very end of an interview and had nothing to do with anything else that was discussed. Can you say “ambush?” And no way the DNC was able to jump into action not knowing it was going to happen. Huge organizations just can’t act that fast.
shrug, I don’t care actually, and am not trying to get into tinfoil hat territory. But I’m confident that this guy won’t get any more McCain interviews.
funky chicken on August 22, 2008 at 6:22 PM

bigbeas on August 22, 2008 at 6:24 PM
Final point–if they keep going after Cindy, Senator McCain probably won’t be able to stop his two military sons from starring in an ad of their own.
The democrats don’t want America getting to see those young men defend their mother.
Um, so please DNC, how about more attack ads aimed at Cindy McCain?

Just wait until the RNC convention. If I know the RNC, and I do, there is going to be a big show about Cindy and her massive amount of charity work which very few Americans know about. Democrats are going to look like complete fracking idiots for attacking her. There will be grown men weeping by the time they finish the film about her and the hundreds and thousands of lives she has saved and changed around the world. I’m willing to bet that even a lot of the so-called strategists dreaming up these ads don’t even know what an incredible human being Cindy McCain is. She may be the most selfless and giving person to ever occupy the White House if her husband is elected.
rockmom on August 22, 2008 at 6:33 PM
Cindy McCain was talking in that clip about the small prop plane that she flies (she’s a pilot.) She wasn’t talking about the campaign jet. The ad is a big fat LIE.

Isn’t the “Priceless” ad campaign the copyrighted property of Mastercard? Haven’t I heard of them going after other businesses and entities who’ve used it without their permission? Can we expect to see Mastercard taking legal action to protect the integrity of their ads? I’m not holding my breath.

Agreed. Cindy McCain inherited enough money to kick back and live a life of leisure. Instead, she has spent a lot of time and a lot of her own money improving the lives of impoverished children around the world. I’d bet she’s done a lot more to help poor children in Africa than Barry Obama, and they’re not even her relatives!
As for the commercial, do the Dims really think anybody is going to vote against McCain because he wears expensive shoes? Take a look at the price tag on some of those designer shoes Michelle Obama wears, and then get back to us on that issue, Dims.

If the Dims are so interested in an “every man” life style, then why aren’t they backing Ralph Nader? I don’t know where he lives now, but I remember reading a profile on him once, and he lived in a room that he rented in a boarding house in D.C., didn’t own a car, owned a couple of suits that he bought at some discount place, and shaved with regular soap because he thought shaving cream was a waste of money.
He’s running in this race too, Dims. If you’re really so gung-ho on electing someone who’s not wealthy and doesn’t wear expensive shoes, why aren’t you getting behind Nader?
AZCoyote on August 22, 2008 at 7:25 PM
A leader sets the tone. Obama brought up Housegate, so naturally others will follow his lead. If Obama had a father, which we know he doesn’t, he’d say, Barack, my son, that is a lame attack. Didn’t I teach you better than that? To me, Obama jumped the shark with “Housegate”.
Paul-Cincy on August 22, 2008 at 7:28 PM
I watched Fox tonight and the panel talked about this. Mort Kondracke and Nina Easton thought this would hurt McCain, because it would define him as an elitist. Fred Barnes said they were full of it. Mort said that they were both elitists but Obama had an edge because he talks about de people and their concerns.
Gag me. The whole problem with the Messiah,Chosen One shtick is that it immediately takes Obama out of the regular guy category. After all, he is special. McCain on the other hand is McCain. I mean God, are people really going to say What is this? He is {gasp} rich?
Everybody knows these guys have money. Obama is a regular money making machine for heavens sake.
I think the panel gave the whole issue to much credence. Most people’s eyes have glazed over by now.

and alphie, McCain spent years being beaten and tortured, he has earned that disability the hard way. That money is his, not his wife’s.

The class envy gimmick is not going to work this time. There’s a candidate in the race that knows exactly what it’s like to be starving, in severe pain, and without hope. And it’s not Obama.
