New DNC ad: How many homes do you own?

Picture the response ad that’s coming. Opening line: “The Democratic Party would never nominate a candidate who owns multiple homes. Would they?” Cut to photos of mansion after mansion, each tagged with its property value and synced to the sound of cash registers: $4.9 million, $6.6 million, $9.1 million. Grand total: $29 million, more than twice what ol’ Moneybags McCain’s properties are worth. Nail it down with a graphic citing the 2004 net worth financial disclosure — somewhere between $198,794,683 and $839,038,000 — and wrap it up in a bow with a shot of Barry O and his buddy Waffles palling around on the trail. Closing kicker: “The Democratic Party: For Multimillionaire Nominees Before They Were Against Them.” The script writes itself, boys. Chop chop.

The Democratic Party is insane.
Two words:
John Kerry

Zany!
JeffreyLloyd on August 22, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Stupid class warfare schtick. Won’t change any minds. I hope McCain can move beyond this type of ad and attack Obama where he is weakest, on his obvious supoprt for socialism, higher taxes, government takeover of health care, inexperience, weakness on defense, lack of energy policy, etc. The ‘celebrity’ angle is played out for now. We get it.
DerKrieger on August 22, 2008 at 11:22 AM
John Kerry – the gift that keeps on giving.
sulla on August 22, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Stupid ad and line of attack, but it will likely be effective.

AP, you really need to be working for the RNC.
SouthernDem on August 22, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Again, truth escapes the Democrats.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 22, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Hey, how many apartments does Charlie Rangel own?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 22, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Why’d the Democrats have to go down this road? There’s nothing we can hit back with. Sigh.

Dude, that’s weak. Do the Democrats have any ideas that don’t suck completely?

For that matter how much lasting damage can owning one peanut farm do?
bbz123 on August 22, 2008 at 11:24 AM
didn’t Kerry have a mansion in France that he sold once he got nomination in 2004?
lets bring that up in this
jp on August 22, 2008 at 11:24 AM
You have to be really good at losing elections if you wanna work for the RNC.
malan89 on August 22, 2008 at 11:24 AM
They are milking it for all it’s worth (kind of like the celebrity thing with McCain). It is really really stupid though. I thought it was stupid when people did it to John Kerry and it is stupid now. One millionaire attacking another richer millionaire. Give me a break.
DanStark on August 22, 2008 at 11:24 AM
We don’t even have to hit Kerry. When they bring this up, respond with one word…”Rezko”.
malan89 on August 22, 2008 at 11:25 AM
Typical Democrat standing in front of a $6 million home:
“Nobody should own a home like that!!”
Typical Conservative standing in front of a $6 million home:
“Everyone should be able to own a house like that.”
coldwarrior on August 22, 2008 at 11:26 AM
Here’s a picture of Obama’s house: it’s worth almost $2 million. How much is your house worth?
drjohn on August 22, 2008 at 11:26 AM
Two more words:
Al Gore
MarkTheGreat on August 22, 2008 at 11:26 AM
Another ad: Do you know how much money is in your Social Security fund/account?
(It’s a trick question!)
Second ad: Barry vs. JMac – How much did you pay in property taxes?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 22, 2008 at 11:26 AM
Wasn’t Obama complaining just the other day, about how McCain was only attacking him, and never dealing with the issues?
MarkTheGreat on August 22, 2008 at 11:28 AM
Next DNC ad:
“Your mama…..”
then,
“Why is Mrs. McCain blonde? Is it real? What sort of evil hair dye does she use?”
Then,
“What does John McCain watch on TV? Has he ever seen ‘Lost’?”
Then,
“Why does John McCain hate children?”
mjk on August 22, 2008 at 11:28 AM
WE could go on for quite some time:
Jon Edwards
carbon_footprint on August 22, 2008 at 11:28 AM
Wait a minute. Don’t we all “own” multiple homes? Don’t we all pay in part for the White House and our states’ governor’s mansion’s etc.????
Brat on August 22, 2008 at 11:28 AM
I don’t own a house. So zero. Maybe Obama wants to help me get a shady real estate deal where I get a 1 million dollar home but only really pay 100,000.
mjk on August 22, 2008 at 11:29 AM
I presume this is why we have the delay in the VP announcement so the Dims can beat this dead horse another day.
HawaiiLwyr on August 22, 2008 at 11:29 AM
So, the guy who did this interview and stuck a totally nonsensical question right at the end of it are on the DNC payroll, obviously. It was a stupid question to ask any candidate.
Perhaps the next question will be “which stock do you have in your portfolio?”
funky chicken on August 22, 2008 at 11:30 AM
Weak. You can bet every speaker at the convention will have some cheesy line about this. So lame.
If they need to run with a non-story like this, they’re toast.
JammieWearingFool on August 22, 2008 at 11:30 AM
I happen to own 57 homes.
One in each state.
jeff_from_mpls on August 22, 2008 at 11:31 AM
I don’t understand the Dems. With Iraq being so unpopular, they have a lot they could be running ads on. Instead, they run ads that give a lot of ammo to the GOP. First “ExxonJohn” (umm, actually it’s “ExxonBarry”), now this. Is it possible that the only people with a worse ad team the Republicans (although it is getting a little better)…are the Democrats?
malan89 on August 22, 2008 at 11:31 AM
this is a sign of just how desperate the Dems are right now, they are in complete Shock Obama isnt running away with it.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 22, 2008 at 11:35 AM
So far, Obama’s made this race about tire gauges and candidate homes. Does anyone else find this… pathetic? Scary (considering the job he might have is that of C-in-C)?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 22, 2008 at 11:36 AM
Not only that, but as AP suggests it opens them up for major counterpunching, which doesn’t even have to be about houses. Now that Cindy Mccain has become an indirect target, doesn’t that make the Michelle O-Blackwell relationship fair game for ads?

How many homes I own alone, my wife owns or we own together? Does a condo count as a house?

The ad fits his meme. He (and pretty much all of the Dumbocrats) despises wealth no matter where it comes from, while enjoying the benefits of being wealthy himself.
What’s the word I’m looking for to describe his campaign?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 22, 2008 at 11:38 AM
I’d rather have president that knows how many states are in the union.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on August 22, 2008 at 11:39 AM
This interview was yesterday? And already the DNC has “town hall” events set up to talk about it? McCain wasn’t ready for the question, because it’s an idiotic one.
The real answer was “Cindy handles the family finances, but I’ll have her or her accountant call you later.” But if you don’t expect such a bizarre question out of the blue, while you are walking away and thinking about something else I could see stumbling.
Yes, this ad will go into heavy rotation because it’s all they have. I think even without rebuttal it may hurt Obama. After all, McCain is a very busy man who actually knows which US Senate Committees he sits on, and who didn’t just spend a week in Hawaii. Busy people who take their jobs seriously hire folks to manage their investments all the time.
funky chicken on August 22, 2008 at 11:40 AM
What’s wrong with having investment property? If they want to criticize someone they should look no further than John Kerry, who I believe with his wife claimed 7 or 9 mansions that they did live in, plus the 9 suvs, while yammering to every one else about conservation.

This is the old tried and true Marxist tactic of Class division.
Egfrow on August 22, 2008 at 11:50 AM
Allahpundit,
The question is not about the number of houses one owns, it’s about forgetting that number. That’s the #1 problem with McCain’s answer.
Also, in another Hotair post, Hotair made the point of specifying that McCain’s owns 0 houses because they belong to his wife. In that case, you might want to also write this info from the site you linked to:
Of course, you are talking about the response ad, and it might be exactly like you picture it. If it is like you describe, it will be a misrepresentation of the facts.
mycowardice on August 22, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Someone should make a graph of Importance of Candidate’s Wealth vs. Importance of Candidate’s Military Service
in Democratic party politics.
It seems to be ever changing, depending on the year.
MayBee on August 22, 2008 at 11:53 AM
As astutely pointed out by Byron York, McCain didn’t say he didn’t know, when you listen to the whole answer, it was basically, “why don’t you idiot reporter go ask my staff that inane irrelevant question?” Or “F*** Off”
kirkill on August 22, 2008 at 11:53 AM
I’m quite enjoying all your huffy blither blathering about how McCain isn’t wealthy when, in fact he is.

Are you living in a cave? McCain made a mountain out of the tire gauge molehill, not Obama. That you believe those 2 things are all Obama has “made thie race about” shows you’re either unable to read a newspaper or watch the news, or more probably, unwilling to.
Dave Rywall on August 22, 2008 at 11:55 AM
So it’s an ad about McCain being senile? Or just a momentary brain fart like Obama’s “57 states” line?
Don’t be so willfully naive. It’s embarrassing.

Dem’s are really scraping the bottom of the barrel with this non-issue.
They’re not even John McCain’s homes.

Um, dude, sorry– but it was Obama who originally came up with the tire gauge plan as an alternative to drilling (his FIRST quote about it; he subsequently backed off that he was just suggesting it). And um, Obama put an ad out the number of houses McCain has, not McCain. Sheesh.

57 states back on the table! Yay!
Could you guys look at bumping the Obama praising China’s infrastructure post? Vincenzo found some articles from The Economist that talk about exactly how they built that gleaming new airport that Barry so admires. And it ain’t pretty.

hey drywall, please point to the person who has said that McCain isn’t wealthy.
Pointing out that many Democrats are richer is not the same thing.

A good response ad would include a photo spread of the Hanoi Hilton, also one of John McCain’s homes for 5 years.
rockmom on August 22, 2008 at 12:06 PM
I find it very interesting that all the Dems have are class warfare and wealth envy. So if you are successful, and have a few things more than your opponent, you are the evil one?
Geez, someone needs to tell Obama the old addage – that the one with the most pieces…Wins!
JohnnyD on August 22, 2008 at 12:11 PM
This is the most lame issue possible. My god Barack….you are so not ready for prime time.
Winebabe on August 22, 2008 at 12:12 PM
even better ad would be showing that 3 of those houses he own were bought for his family members. then cut to the saddle back convention where Obama once again quoted Scripture. He quoted Matthew where he said that the United states has forgotten what Matthew said in that what you do for you least brother you should do for everyone. Then cut to a picture of Obongo Obamas hut in kenya who lives on 1.00 a day to which obamas teams stated that Obama doesnt know his half brother so why should he help him out.
then go into the fact that Obama wants to take more tax money from me to give to people “I dont know” and also is trying to pass the Global Poverty Act which will take 864 million from tax money to give to people like Obongo Obama who Barack wont even help.
CaptainObvious on August 22, 2008 at 12:15 PM
You are a wonderful human being.
And after that ad – using the general public, They could also go to all of the democrats in office with this question as well. In the same style that Michael Moore did on f9/11. Ambush democrats congressmen and senators on the sidewalks of DC, and ask them if they launched their political career from the home of a domestic terrorist who regretted that they didn’t set off more bombs to the Pentagon and the Capitol building.

And I am quite sure that every card carrying member of the Democratic Party, including its respective elected officials, all only own one single home. It most likely is even in the Official Democratic Party Handbook that members can only own one home.
Of course, I am also sure that if the Democratic Party REALLY had its way, they would own more than one home, like yours, mine, his, hers, that home over there, that other home way over there……
pilamaye on August 22, 2008 at 12:20 PM
Isn’t that the truth.
RushBaby on August 22, 2008 at 12:28 PM
As Dr.Cwac.Cwac said, Charlie Rangel owns what, four reduced priced apartments. Not long ago on O’Reilly, they showed how Wexler claimed to live in florida but does not, as that’s his in-laws apartment. He lives in VA. How many homes does the Kenneys own? Rockefeller? The list goes on.
But the downside to this retaliation, is that this may be what the democrats want us to do. And any response by us, without seeing the original video from the democrats, just comes off as petty and irrelevant as theirs. And this can be used against us by the hypocrites who say that we are going off message, when it is a response to theirs.
wise_man on August 22, 2008 at 12:28 PM
*shiver*
RushBaby on August 22, 2008 at 12:29 PM
Exactly:
Warren: “Everybody talks about taxing the rich, but not the poor, the middle class. At what point – give me a number, give me a specific number – where do you move from middle class to rich?”
McCain: “I don’t believe in class warfare or re-distribution of the wealth. But I can tell you, for example, there are small businessmen and women who are working 16 hours a day, seven days a week that some people would classify as – quote – “rich,” my friends, and want to raise their taxes and want to raise their payroll taxes.
So, I think if you are just talking about income, how about $5 million?
But seriously, I don’t think you can – I don’t think seriously that – the point is that I’m trying to make here, seriously — and I’m sure that comment will be distorted — but the point is that we want to keep people’s taxes low and increase revenues.
So, it doesn’t matter really what my definition of “rich” is because I don’t want to raise anybody’s taxes. I really don’t. In fact, I want to give working Americans a better shot at having a better life, and we all know the challenges,”
wise_man on August 22, 2008 at 12:31 PM
[mycowardice on August 22, 2008 at 11:51 AM]
I can’t agree with you here. While HA, did write a post clarifying who owned what, namely that Cindy McCain owned the ‘houses’, this is not the argument Obama is making. Obama is, by argument, saying the McCain’s own them and they persist in this. The campaign ad would compar Dem claimed apples with apples of the same characteristics to make a point, the same point that the Dems are making.
It is only a misrepresentation in the sense of outside the debate, the rules of which, in this instance were defined by Obama.
As for McCain not “knowing” (as the Obama campaign is arguing now) how many homes his wife owned, I seem to remember that Kerry, for different reasons, did not “know”, how many cars he and his wife had in their driveways when he was campaigning.

Democrats are dumber than rocks. In this country property ownership is a sign of success. Furthermore, McCain is more interested in serving his country than tallying his capital assets. This is without a doubt the most stupid issue these dolts could have formulated.
rplat on August 22, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Obama’s house.
Oh, and we own two houses. Because we work hard, save and invest our money.
That’s the American Way!
Blue-eyed Infidel on August 22, 2008 at 12:43 PM
I am so sick of the class warfare schtick. I grew up the product of teenage parents of the sixties, my Dad worked 2-3 jobs to support us in a small town of less than 1,000 people. I finished high school, went to college on loans and very few PELL Grants, and then moved to Washington, DC and got better and better jobs over the years.
I make good money but am not loaded. I’ve made enough to know that money doesn’t buy happiness but I still try to make as much as I can for a better life after my employment years. Call me Satan then! I also try to give where I can. I’m the adoptive father of two children. Why am I evil by definition of the left?
Do they have some sort of internal chart I could look at that tells me when I should just give up on making money because I’m making too much? Who the hell do they think pays for all of their social programs? Tooth Fairy? Santa Claus? I’ve never seen such a group of hand-biters as the Dems are nowadays.
Furthermore, lets run out the timeline a bit here. Obama is roughly 25 years younger than McCain. How much will Obama be worth, especially if he wins POTUS, when he is McCain’s age? They ever thought about that? No, I doubt it, because they can’t see the forest for the trees.
MarkABinVA on August 22, 2008 at 12:51 PM
That fence is WAY north of our southern border. Or is that to keep the Canadians out that swim across the lake?
MarkABinVA on August 22, 2008 at 12:55 PM
yeah, I did remember right. In contrast to McCain astutely referring Politco to campaign staff for the answer to how many homes the McCain’s own and get the info to them right the first time and not hide anything, back in 2004 Kerry played the “I don’t own an SUV” game until he was quickly caught not mentioning the SUV owned by hs wife.
With his typical nuance, Kerry explained, “The family has it. I don’t have it.” (via QandO)
Dems: We were for candidates who didn’t know what they owned before we were against candidates who didn’t know what they owned.
Dusty on August 22, 2008 at 1:03 PM
Evidently the DNC views poor campaign tactics in the same way they view years of failed entitlement programs.

OT, but looking at Rassmussen on the electoral college numbers, EVERY state that has made a move recently has been in the republican direction. Barry better find something more powerful than 7 houses, and quick, or this will no longer be a horserace.
