Maybe no one wanted the gig?

posted at 10:05 pm on August 22, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

This entire exercise in announcing a running mate for Barack Obama has provided one puzzlement after another.  The campaign at first said that they would announce Obama’s selection in the week before the convention — a wise choice, given Obama’s steep drop in the polling and the limited amount of time between the Democratic convention and that of the GOP the following week.  Obama had an opportunity to demonstrate his gravitas and wisdom with the most important decision he has to make in this race, and enjoy a media blackout of McCain’s suddenly powerful campaign.

Their first fumble came when Team Obama decided to gimmick the announcement by texting it to the world.  As a campaign strategy, it resembled late-night advertising for dating services.  It hardly lent any dignity to the Obama campaign, and made this critical decision into a cheap marketing strategy.

But even that looks wise next to the strangely delayed rollout — now at least day later than Team Obama led people to believe.   Instead of gaining extra media attention, they have wound up burying the story on the weekend.  The VP announcement will gain Obama little earned media, and most people will have other activities keeping them busy rather than paying much attention to the move.  That makes perfect sense as a strategy — if Obama’s embarrassed about his pick.

In fact, one has to wonder whether Obama really had made up his mind, or whether his first or even second choice didn’t turn him down.  That would explain the delays in the announcement, and the apparent disorganization of Team Obama in handling an event that should have underscored the seriousness of their candidate.  After all, they set the expectation that the running mate announcement would come this week, and they missed their own target.

Not only has Obama turned this into a game show, he has also now built up expectations to the point where almost any selection would be a letdown.  The two rumored picks, Joe Biden and Evan Bayh, do not scream excitement.  They don’t have the kind of star status that would justify this kind of NFL Draft Day engineering.  Only Hillary Clinton or Al Gore might approach that kind of celebrity.  Hillary would be better announced at the convention than on a Saturday afternoon, and Gore has already done the VP gig for eight years.

Obama has made a mess out of this announcement, and blown a natural opportunity to demonstrate his leadership.  He also has given John McCain a wide opening to handle his own running-mate announcement in a manner which will demonstrate the Gravitas Gap which has widened considerably this month between the two candidates.

Lenin/Pinocchio 2008 - I’m melting from pride.

Entelechy on August 23, 2008 at 1:52 AM

the way he runs his campaign convinces me that I do not want him running the country.

jukin on August 23, 2008 at 1:57 AM

There’s nothing special, interesting, challenging, or fearful about this pick. I feared the O/H combination more than any other, and the Keane one next.

I have no clue what the ‘mystery’ was all about.

Entelechy on August 23, 2008 at 1:59 AM

HOPE (they don’t notice I have no damn experience)

and

CHANGE (my Depends, you ungrateful little b*st@rds! and get off my lawn!)

sulla on August 23, 2008 at 2:20 AM

You know this morning I decided to do my own experiment. On the way to work, nothing on the radio but constant chatter about everyone keeping their cell phone close due to the “special” text message from the Messiah!. My drive to work, was station after station, that’s all… we are going to be waitin for the text. Well I decided to pull a prank at work to the most loyal democrat idealogues who’s sphincter was the size of pin head, waitin for the text from the exalted one.. I sent a text msg where I spoofed a text message from the Messiah’s web site indicating that the VP pick was Hillary.

What happened next was amazing…. in a very arrogant manner this person announced to the office that he received a text message indicating that Hillary was the VP pick. The office proceeded to have a spontaneous celebration that finally the democrats have realized that enough was enough and that the Clinton’s were going to put Obama over the top. That led to an email broadcasting the announcement that this fellow was the first to receive the txt msg which led to phone calls to his family and friends. That’s when I decided after precisely 2 minutes into this celebration, that enough was enough. I sent another spoofed txt msg indicating it was Robert Byrd. Well… that caused a shit storm of another email message retracting the Hillary announcement and blaming the previous announcement that the republicans hacked into the Obama website.

What is the point of all of this? The realization that Obamican’s realization that Hillary was their only hope to reclaim the White House.

I know that I have posted this several times here tonight. But this to me was significant. The two democrat camps were totally united. The Obama and Hillary camps rallied together. That was profound. They acknowledged the hurt thrust against both camps by McCain, that they were willing to let it be. That was the wise decision to regain the White House. Next week will certainly be interesting to see if the two sides reconcile.

Obama taps the pugnacious plagiarizing pugilist!!

Al Franken would have been more fun, but this isn’t bad.

Time to dust off the Dukakis campaign reel from ’87 that featured Kinnock and do a party mix with some of the other greatest hits.

moxie_neanderthal on August 23, 2008 at 2:53 AM

Not only has Obama turned this into a game show

and the game show would be the gong show right ????

or did they all end up playing rock paper scissors and Bidden lost.

Mojack420 on August 23, 2008 at 2:57 AM

Entelechy on August 23, 2008 at 1:59 AM

Team Messian didn’t have a clue, either, hon, and it was more Agony than it was Mystery to them

My sense is that Ed is right, and several others turned the ‘honor’ down so as to not sink their careers / futures

Janos Hunyadi on August 23, 2008 at 2:58 AM

No really, who is it?

Chuck Schick on August 23, 2008 at 3:01 AM

I wonder if any other VP pick has ever caused so much joy.

Kralizec on August 23, 2008 at 3:52 AM

This was fine commentary, Ed Morrissey.

Kralizec on August 23, 2008 at 3:54 AM

well… this is pure gold… did they pick this guy just so they could whine for 4 more years?

Kaptain Amerika on August 23, 2008 at 4:00 AM

I love how they announced it 3am eastern time. That’s gotta make the old bastard feel welcome.

So are all the senile cranky old white man jokes off limits now?

timed to coincide when Biden had to make his nightly run to the restroom for his week bladder..

DaveC on August 23, 2008 at 6:18 AM

After reading that it’s Biden for sure, I guess the text message went out overnight. If Obama wins, and continues to play these kind of games with the American people, I can’ wait for the next four years!

tazmebro on August 23, 2008 at 6:21 AM

This was a revelation to me – the dems expect to lose.

Keep laughing at them people! It’s working!

Squiggy on August 23, 2008 at 6:50 AM

It’s clear there must have been a few ‘turn downs’ along the way.

tarpon on August 23, 2008 at 7:18 AM

Since Joe thought he was out a few days ago and said so, I wonder who the first choice really was?

JAW on August 23, 2008 at 7:34 AM

Obombem and Bribem what a ticket

MSGTAS on August 23, 2008 at 9:39 AM

What a way to kick-off the Democratic National Carni! How totally kool…am I impressed.

I can’t wait until they open the art booth. Always wanted one of them Bill and Monica paintings on velvet. Maybe I’ll get two; the other a portrait of Obama, crown of thorns…you know, the One that comes with the blue-light.

Earlg on August 23, 2008 at 10:11 AM

the bidden choice (pro-Iraq war) neutralizes BO reason for being.
I’m astonished by this BO strategic gaff.
wow.

now if Mc picks Mitt…kaboom!

Chuck Schick on August 23, 2008 at 5:07 AM

Not a chance. I resemble most of ‘em anyway so why should anyone else get a pass? Cindy McCain probably tells John the best ones already.

You’ll know the grownups are running the show (and on the way to inauguration) when she starts telling blonde jokes during the campaign.

platypus on August 23, 2008 at 11:37 AM

This was the day when the oceans started to… oops, when the wheels started to come off the bus?!

We desparately need a video of Barry O and Uncle Joe singing the “Happy-happy, Joy-joy!” song from Ren & Stimpy! What a wonderful day it is!

drunyan8315 on August 23, 2008 at 2:15 PM

alphie, don’t you have a home, friends, people who want to be with you?

Terrye on August 23, 2008 at 12:59 AM

Ummm… That would be a big NO!

trigon on August 23, 2008 at 3:27 PM

You’re not saying that Biden drew the short straw, are you Captain?

I R A Darth Aggie on August 23, 2008 at 3:47 PM

I’ve been a whole lot less than thrilled with the idea of having John McCain as our party nominee. I doubt I’ll be all that impressed by whatever pick he makes for his VP choice.

But, as a party, we look like political geniuses compared to the Dims. These people must be dumber than a box of rocks. In fact, they just can’t be this stupid, can they? Will they go through with this? Will the convention actually formalize Obama’s nomination? I’m really having my doubts, here.

Somewhere, there have to be some Dim Kingmaker-types who are waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.
