Video: Volleyball team wins gold, blindsides NBC with shout-out to Bush

A palate cleanser by popular request; you’ll remember our heroines here from the Butt-Pat That Wasn’t. The official Olympics site has highlights of the match but this snippet had to be rescued from oblivion by Tivo. Exit question: Good lord — don’t they know who runs this network now? Click the image to watch.

Update: Oh my. Even worse than a Bush reference!

Update: Some people are reporting trouble with the video at the link. If it doesn’t work for you, try this.

Watch the press (such as the “journalists” at MSNBC) compare this to the ‘black power’ salutes from decades ago.

[US VOLLEYBALL TEAM ... THE WORST PERSONS .. IN THE WORLD!]

wise_man on August 21, 2008 at 2:33 PM

I watched the replay at like 4 AM because I wanted to see if NBC would cut the interview. They didn’t. I really hope this moment gave Olbermann an aneurysm.

I watched this live. Very cool.
They are the best at what they do, they seemed enormously nice, and are very easy on the eyes.

Cool for them. I hope they have their babies, come back and win the gold a third time!

I think Misty might get that butt pat now.

Well played, ladies.

Shoot I missed that last night! I’m kicking myself.

redshirt on August 21, 2008 at 2:36 PM

I saw them being interviewed for a few seconds during the night of the opening ceremony– they were talking about what a thrill it was to meet Bush the night before. These girls rule.

Pasalubong on August 21, 2008 at 2:36 PM

I saw that last night. It was awesome. The shout out to Bush was too cool. NBC left that pretty quick afterwards LOL

lorien1973 on August 21, 2008 at 2:37 PM

I watched this last night, and it was, by far, my favorite olympic moment. The match, that is. I didn’t get to see the shout out.

:O(

I’ll keep trying.

:O)

OhEssYouCowboys on August 21, 2008 at 2:37 PM

These two are in a class by themselves, and not just on the sand. Way to go!

Think_b4_speaking on August 21, 2008 at 2:38 PM

I saw that live last night and when I told my mother about the President remark she said they only ran the first part of the interview (as I described it) this am on Mess-NBC but cut it off after Misty talked about her mother. I saw it again this afternoon and again it was cut off before the President was thanked. I’ll be charitable and think the only reason they ran it at all was because Misty talked about some of her mother’s ashes being distributed on the volleyball court sand which I guess is the reason they ran it again at all.

I had to restrain myself from shouting in joy when they won. My 8 month old son was sleeping in my wife’s arms right next to me. The match was awesome! I wish I hadn’t gotten the glass of water right afterwards when they gave the shout out.

Brat on August 21, 2008 at 2:38 PM

I know – - Olby and Matthews don’t know what to do with themselves after this. They have to be asking themselves whether anybody actually watches and listens to their rants (which they would know the answer to if they looked at their ratings).

Rick on August 21, 2008 at 2:44 PM

Sweetness. Thanks wise_man for the new link or I might have missed that.

I’m surprised NBC didn’t have them shot by the ChiComs after the interview.

Aw, daggum. ::snifflesniffle::

That was GREAT.

tree hugging sister on August 21, 2008 at 2:46 PM

As a woman, I was immensely proud watching these ladies and listening to them afterward. Not only have they worked so hard to achieve their ultimate athletic goal, but they are now looking forward to achieving another goal of becoming mothers, and clearly that is now a priority for them. I figured that made as many liberals’ heads explode as did the shout-out to the President.

I already loved these ladies but now I love them twice as much. I envy the children they will have because they will be awesome moms.

rockmom on August 21, 2008 at 2:47 PM

WOW! I actually have a tear in my eye. This tells me that the folks who are too busy doing great things to watch the main stream media, don’t buy the msm’s “America Sucks” propaganda.

BadgerHawk on August 21, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Good for them!! I’m proud of them.

elduende on August 21, 2008 at 2:49 PM

Ha, good natured American women who like to ham it up and interact with the crowd. I watched the entire match on the edge of my seat and jumped into the air when they won; their dominating success on the sand is something to see.

Anyone see the Chinese chick on the other team constantly putting her hands on her teammate’s butt every time they won a point? She also patted Walsh’s booty when the hugged immediately after the game.

Oh to be THAT hand.

Bishop on August 21, 2008 at 2:49 PM

Reminds me of an interview with a woman diver from the Sydney games. The woman wasn’t expected to medal, but won gold when the favorite faltered, and she had some of the best dives of her life.

Little reporterette ran up to her right after the diver found out she had won and asked something along the lines of, how do you think that you won.

The diver responded, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I’ve never seen a reporter work harder to end an interview in my life.

MarkTheGreat on August 21, 2008 at 2:49 PM

How unbelievably refreshing to see appreciation given to our
President instead of the psychotic drivel we usually see coming from liberals and their friends in hollywood.

Their success still pales in comparison to what Baracky achieved as a community organizer. God help them if they own more than one house.

Bishop on August 21, 2008 at 2:55 PM

Heh. I saw this last night and figured that NBC execs were stroking out in their collective living rooms. I was quite pleased that these young women thought to give the thumbs up to their president after winning an international competition. Heck, I would have been pleased if they’d done the same thing during Clinton’s presidency. It’s called class and love of country, two things that the nutroots might not be well aquainted with.

Django! (I have a relative whose name is Django, believe it or not.)

Love this video…unfortunately, they’re probably going to take a fair amount of pushback for being appreciate of the POTUS – but something tells me these strong young women can handle it.

Physics Geek on August 21, 2008 at 2:56 PM

Great comment. Completely agree. I used to slam Clinton all the time until someone said to me “that man was elected President of the USA, and that’s got to count for something.” Since then, I tried to be more respectful, especially in public company, and even more so in an international setting.

Me too. But wise_man’s link worked. Thanks.

Congratulations, ladies, on both the gold medal and on winning with class. You do us all proud.

AZCoyote on August 21, 2008 at 3:08 PM

Not to veer too far off of these two sparkling ladies, but there are other class acts from other nations in the Olympics.

If you watched the end of the NBC show last night, they profiled an Australian open-water swimmer with one leg who managed to finish 16th in a field of 3o+. The winner of the heavyweight weightlifting contest was a German dude who, after winning the gold by lifting 561 pounds!!! over his head, displayed a photo of his recently deceased wife while he stood on the podium.

There are many class acts in the Olympics, people who don’t need to fake their ages to win a medal.

Love you gals!!!!

RobCon on August 21, 2008 at 3:09 PM

He does deserve to be thanked by the Olympians.

There was a lot of pressure on him to politicize the games- to pull out altogether or to boycott the opening ceremonies. Instead, he went and made the Olympics all about the Olympians. He honored them.

MayBee on August 21, 2008 at 3:12 PM

God help them if they own more than one house.

Bishop on August 21, 2008 at 2:55 PM

Good point. Also, how dare they want to have kids?? Don’t they understand that kids increase one’s carbon footprint? It ruins the environment, for crying out loud? Maybe they’ll reconsider – - if Obama is elected president, they will be able to change their minds up through the third trimester.

SARCASM

Sarcasm? Hardly. POTUS Baracky would allow them to reconsider for a few hours after the babies are born.

Those women are incredible. Before this year’s Olympics I didn’t even think much of beach volleyball, but watching them play was incredible.

And now this…

Incredible women.

Esthier on August 21, 2008 at 3:16 PM

It was a nice statement by them. That said, I know they mean well, but doesn’t anyone know anything about flag etiquette anymore? It’s been a long time since I was in the Boy Scouts, but from my vague recollection I don’t think you’re supposed to drape it over your wet, sweaty, sandy body (no, not even if your bod is as nice as these two).

…”he went and made the Olympics all about the Olympians. He honored them.”

That’s what leaders with class do. It is never about them, no matter how roughly they are treated, they smile through it all, and get the spotlight back on to the folks that they are priveleged to be honoring for us.

I have read in history books that occasionally Democrats used to do that too, but I have to admit that I find it hard to believe.

Someone probably gave them those flags to hold up after winning. Once they were done holding them, they probably didn’t know what to do with them.

And in these world games, nearly everyone wears their country flag.

The flags look beautiful draped on such women. Etiquette shouldn’t matter more than intent.

Esthier on August 21, 2008 at 3:50 PM

Those Deadspin guys are having fun needling the Local Olympic Committe:

It was their 108th consecutive win dating to August of last year, and not even a Chinese government-ordered rainstorm could prevent the local pair, Tian Jia and Wang Jiefor, from losing.

Rich on August 21, 2008 at 3:51 PM

Seeing that made me feel not so bad about giving NBC an extra viewer for the Olympics.

These ladies put on another great performance, sure Phelps was great but these two never lost even a set in the Olympics.
