Video: Carville predicts “safe” Obama VP pick
posted at 10:15 am on August 21, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Newsmax interviews the Ragin’ Cajun, James Carville, regarding the politics of running-mates in both parties. Carville also opines on why Obama can’t gain traction, tries to minimize the polling before the conventions, but notes that Democrats have begun discussing why the race is tied in a year where Democrats expected a walkover.
Sam Nunn? Carville can’t be serious about this selection. Nunn has been retired for years and would be even less exciting than Tim Kaine or Evan Bayh on the stump. Oddly, Carville never mentions Hillary Clinton as a possibility. McCain, on the other hand, wants to “scramble the jets”, providing a game-changing surprise. What kind of game-change is Carville thinking — a Sarah Palin or a Joe Lieberman?
Regarding Hillary, Jim Geraghty and Soren Dayton think that she may still get the nod. Obama has a major event scheduled for Saturday in Indiana where most people expect him to appear with his running mate. That would indicate Bayh, obviously, as Obama would want Bayh to turn Indiana blue for him. However, the e-mail/text message has not yet gone out to supporters, and one would expect that today for maximum media bounce, which Obama desperately needs.
If we do not hear about a VP pick today or tomorrow, the Obama campaign will have decided to hold it until the convention. It makes little sense to announce the pick on a Saturday or Sunday when delegates are in transit to Denver and everyone else is away from their television sets. In that scenario, Hillary becomes the most likely choice. The dramatic reveal would help unify the delegates, or so Obama would hope. Picking Bayh, Biden, Kaine, or Nunn in Denver would be an anticlimactic moment so monumental, the thud will be heard in space.
Hillary would help salvage some of the disaffected Democrats migrating to McCain for the moment, but in the long run would probably be more trouble than she’s worth. The Tuzla Dash immediately comes back into play, along with the Health Care Task Force, her strongarm tactics as First Lady, and the entire Clinton pardon scandal. It creates a target-rich environment for Republicans, and undercuts Obama’s reform message entirely. Even FOB Carville recognizes this much.

Obama would be insane to go with Hillary as she’ll suck all the air out of the room and convention, and it’ll look as if he’s desperate.
The conventional wisdom that it’ll be a slamdunk for them if they’re a team is misguided. The only base it would really energize is the GOP.

Krauthammer’s been saying Obama should pick Sam Nunn as well.
Btw, that pic of Carville on the front page is classic.

It proves what I’ve always said – Carville looks like what happens when you microwave a muppet.

I can’t see a Hillary veep as satisfying the PUMAs. The grip is that she got passed over for a younger, prettier, male airhead with no resume. If she takes the veep spot, it just shines a glaring spotlight on the whole reason the PUMAs are p*ss*d.

Given Nunn’s opinions regarding foreign policy, I can’t see him ever being willing to tag team with Obama.

Going out on a limb here, I’m seeing a Hillary/Obama ticket.
bbz123 on August 21, 2008 at 10:32 AM
A Clinton VP would badly overshadow a lightweight Obama.
Additionally, a Clinton VP would be just the thing McCain needs to energize his base, in a way he hasn’t been able to do so far.

That’s Carville? I thought it was Gollum.
Rod on August 21, 2008 at 10:34 AM
How exciting can the Dem VP pick be? He’s gotta be bland to balance Obama’s far out of the mainstream ideology. And he can’t be a she, and he can’t be a minority, etc, etc.
Lieberman might work :)
JiangxiDad on August 21, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Interesting assessment and I do hope you are correct.
Hillary as VP worries me. If he chooses her, McCain has to pick a VP that will cancel her out. I am thinking Rudy.
Without Hillary on the ticket, my ideal would be Romney.
carbon_footprint on August 21, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Guess I think Carville has it reversed, with present trends. Barry needs a jump start, and McCain just needs to keep on keepin’ on. If the Obama machine thinks he’s gonna reverse present currents with just a Messiah speech in Denver, they’re nuts. He needs some splashy help.

The problem is the blacks.
Anything less than the top slot will cause many of them to stay home.
Longer term, the main reason why they stay with the Democrats even though many of them are more closely aligned with the Republicans socially, is that they have bought into the notion that only the Democrats care about them.
Such a move would be a slap in the face, sufficient to cause many to rethink this belief.

Well I came here to say pretty much what you just said.

Let them have their vote. Then make her the pick. “As I’ve said many times, as I’ve said before, she would always be on everyone’s short list, hope and change and I’m listening to the voters, yak yak yak

Hope you’re right.
Not sure this little smack on the cheek will be enough, though it may start a re-thinking that’s a long, long time overdue.
Why, for example, are African-Americans a “voting bloc” but Irish-Americans just “white folk”?
Note, for cross-reference, that Asian-Americans aren’t a bloc, Mexican-Americans may be a bloc, but not Hispanic-Americans. Hell, even Cuban-Americans, for a long time a reliable Republican bloc, have fractured.
Onion Network News may have this one right:

Don’t forget about Clinton’s wonderful praise of McCain during the primaries. The commercials would be awe-some.

One reason the contest is tied in a year that was expected to be a cakewalk for the Democrat Party is that the Democrat narrative has crashed badly.
* WRONG on Iraq the “civil war.”
* WRONG on General Petraeus “the betrayer.”
* WRONG on Haditha “the next My Lai.”
* WRONG on Ethanol subsidies “magical replacement for fuel.”
* WRONG on Drilling “never.”
* WRONG on Valerie Plame “secret agent.”
* WRONG on Global warming “debate is over.”
* WRONG on Economic collapse of USA “recession!”
* WRONG on Russia in Georgia “Russia isn’t a threat.”
and most of all:
* WRONG on Barack Obama “new kind of politician!”

I don’t see that as much of a stretch – I tend to agree. Assuming Obama manages to pull it out and win nomination, who can he pick that has less experience – not many. Maybe Webb? He is only on his first term….

I thought The One is desperate – in every possible way.
I’ve been thinking about Hillary at the top of the ticket myself; what has become of the super delegates? Are they all pledged – forgive me if that’s a silly question, I’m on election-overload and can only remember that Obama as President would be a disaster. The rest of the details remain fuzzy.
Which could be a good thing…
Still – what about those super delegates? Are they all pledged to Obama or could Hillary still pull out the usual Clinton bagofdirtytricks and snatch this from The One?
KrisinNE on August 21, 2008 at 11:22 AM
The Democratic attack chiluahua has spoken.
TooTall on August 21, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Do the super delegates vote by secret ballot, or is it roll call like the states?
MarkTheGreat on August 21, 2008 at 11:42 AM
Hillary doesn’t want the VP slot. A lot of her supporters won’t vote for Obama at the top of the ticket for reasons having nothing to do with feminism. Now the William Ayers stuff is out on the table, Hillary isn’t going to spend months of her life justifying Obama’s 20 years’ friendships with dangerous lunatics.
funky chicken on August 21, 2008 at 12:08 PM
If she takes the VP nomination, it’s only because Howard Dean has pictures in hand of Hillary driving Vince Foster out to that park.

Now that’s funny. First he used the pics to keep her out, now he uses them to force her in.

How true, how true, but the “long run” would not start for at least 2 and 1/2 months however.

KrisinNE on August 21, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Superdelegates are not required to “lock in” their votes ahead of time. According to the insanity that created the superdelegate system, they’re supposed to vote at the convention, and not before.
In other words, Obama ain’t nominated, and won’t be unless the Supers do what they’ve said they’ll do. They’re Dems, of course, so anything could happen….

How about a Obama/Clinton ticket? Not Hill, Bill.
Can a ex-Prez run for VP?

So.. it will be some old white guy..

Hillary would only agree to a VP post if she were certain of winning the general election because she would then be in position to challenge the incumbent in ’12 (you think she wouldn’t?). To be VP nominee on a losing ticket would forever seal her fate. The outlook for the Dems going in to Denver is not very promising. I believe Hillary has at least one more card to play, but it won’t include the Messiah.
drewas on August 21, 2008 at 5:03 PM
A one-term Prez could run for VP, but a two-term Prez couldn’t because according to the Constitution (I’m paraphrasing) no person shall be eligible to the office of Vice President who is ineligible to the office of President.
Thus, Slick Willie couldn’t be Obamba’s VP… but Jimmy the Peanut could!!!
