Obama: We should probably stop setting examples for Russian aggression

Link via Karl, who wonders what Obama could possibly mean here after his stirring testament at Saddleback to what a “real bad person” Saddam Hussein was.

The Illinois senator’s opposition to the Iraq war, which his comment clearly referenced, is well known. But this was the first time the Democratic presidential candidate has made a comparison between the U.S. invasion of Iraq and Russia’s recent military activity in Georgia.

“We’ve got to send a clear message to Russia and unify our allies,” Obama told a crowd of supporters in Virginia. “They can’t charge into other countries. Of course it helps if we are leading by example on that point.”

Here’s a newsflash, champ: Russia’s foreign minister did indeed invoke a case of U.S. military action in his Journal op-ed the other day, but it wasn’t Bush and the Middle East that he had in mind. I don’t begrudge the guy his leftist cant, but at least put some meat on the bone. How, precisely, would Russian actions have been different if we hadn’t invaded Iraq? Georgia and Ossetia have been fighting since Obama was in his 20s. Are we playing another game of Time Machine here, in which the war somehow becomes a justification even for misfortunes that preceded it?

Exit question: Does it really matter if we lead by example given that, according to Dan Quayle aspirant Tim Kaine, Obama’s already capable of bending Russia to his will?

Update: A commenter wonders where the McCain campaign ad is for this. Good question. For all the liberal pants-wetting over how negative McCain’s supposedly been, his attack ads (with the notable exception of the Landstuhl one) have been notably mild. No Rezko, no Ayers, no Wright — just Britney and Paris. I guess they’re saving the heavy armaments for after the convention.

It’s Bush’s fault.

Changing the subject, BOH? Let’s get back to killing babies, k?

Am I living in a different reality? I seem to recall that there were allied forces with us when we entered Iraq. Serioiusly, has the democrats been THAT successful in this meme?

“They can’t charge into other countries. Of course it helps if we are leading by example on that point.”

What an anti-American jerk.

Another example of influence from Rev. Wright.

Moral Relativism, always sides on the anti-american side when invoked.

Yeah, including Poland. I’m sure they don’t appreciate this kind of equivocation.

Stop blaming America, Obama.

Blame me and my kind (if you get my drift or see Cantor thread). I’m sure that what “blame America” is code for in some people’s minds.

WOW! Slaps head! It’s our fault! Who knew…

sabbott on August 21, 2008 at 1:02 PM

OMFG. Is there any evil in the world that is not somehow directly attributable to the USA? I am so tired of this. I happen to think the US is a great place with great people and great ideas. Anyone who does not agree is free to go live in any other utopia in any other place in the world. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Obama STFU.

Chakra Hammer on August 21, 2008 at 1:03 PM

Uhhh….it doesn’t count when we do it.

And he’s just blaming America first.

crr6 on August 21, 2008 at 1:04 PM

simple history lesson, Russia is much more like Saddam/Iraq if making analogies.

Saddam invaded Kuwait for Oil, the US responded with a large coalition to push him back(and save Oil supplies). ended with a Cease Fire Agreement that allowed Saddam to stay in power(which Dems like Al Gore criticized b/c of all of Saddam’s terror Ties!). Saddam violated agreement repeadetly, each time case to resume war legally. resulted in 1998 Regime Change and eventually the renewel of the War in 2003.

Putin invades Georgia and is seizing oil, Georgia never invaded a foreign nation to do such.

yet to Leftist, history is whatever they want it to be. There worldview has long been destroying which is why they are so unhinged and direct so much irrational and illogical hate on G.W. Bush

Hopefully DURING the convention – McCain bought ad time for that, right?

I was waiting for that lame comment. It’s only interesting that he took this long to get it out. Was the teleprompter broken or did he have to convene his group of “experts” to debate the point?

does anyone else think Obama is going to do ANYTHING to Putin?

Not I!

Deosn’t this man ever read his own press? First he’s against the war, then he says it’s working and then he says troops should leave and then stay in limited amounts and now he’s against the war again and he doesn’t see anything wrong with all this. And up is apparently down and black can be white and success can be failure and right can be wrong and vice versa….as long as HE says it’s so or isn’t so or was so and will be so again and maybe was never so or was it…..

jeanie on August 21, 2008 at 1:08 PM

And so when our troops leave Iraq next year, Russia will withdraw from Ossetia, isn’t that right Baracky?

It’s probably better to hold off until it’s altogether too late for the Democrats to nominate Hillary Clinton instead of Big O. As for the big armaments themselves, though, keep George Obama in mind.

How many UN resolutions were there against Georgia?
drjohn on August 21, 2008 at 1:23 PM

You just can’t use logic with these people.

We don’t ‘occupy’ Iraq. If anyone wants to see what occupation looks like, then look at what is happening in Georgia by the Russians. Or when Saddam sent his army into Kuwait. We went in to Iraq because Saddam continually violated the terms of the cease-fire in 1991. The war was resumed after multiple UN resolutions telling them to comply or they would face repercussions for their actions. We did not go in to take Iraq over and keep it as our own. We did not go in to steal their oil. We did not go in because of any of the moonbat reasons that the democrats claimed.

We don’t ‘occupy’ South Korea. or Germany, or Japan.

Comparing what we do with Russia is a great insult. I can understand when a pot smoking teenager who is a jon stewart fan might possibly agree to this (not saying they are capable of coming up with this idea in the first place) and it’s something that a democrat, let along a grown-up would even think about saying.

Oh, for a party of loyal opposition!

misterpeasea on August 21, 2008 at 1:34 PM

I don’t know. Is he actually directly referring to Iraq in his statement? If so, he’s obviously once again above his pay grade and deep into la-la land.

But if he meant Kosovo, he has a point.

Perhaps they’re waiting to make sure that Obama’s the nominee. With everything that’s come out on Obama in the last week, Hill & Co may be pushing hard that he’s simply not viable as a candidate for the Dems. I think the entire idea behind the new Dem nomination process was to prevent a “recreate ‘68″ situation when Humphrey won the nomination, the McCarthy people were upset and HHH went on to lose the election.

Moral relativism. Liberals just don’t understand good/evil or right/wrong.

DerKrieger on August 21, 2008 at 1:45 PM

Misha I on August 21, 2008 at 1:34 PM

Not really. The UN was involved in Kosovo before the US got involved. US didn’t go in there alone.

Also, Russia’s claims of Georgian-caused ethnic cleansing aren’t held up by independent humanitarian missions, nor hospitals in Ossetia.

If Russia was so concerned about ethnic cleansing, why is Russia against the Iraq mission, where Saddam killed about a million people (many ethnic kurds). So Russia’s claim of ethnic cleansing doesn’t wash there either.

This is all about Georgia entering NATO. Russia is hinting that Ukraine is next for the same reason – and has already promised to violate Ukraine’s sovereignty by docking its navy in Ukraine ports, despite the government’s revoking Russia’s lease of those ports.

If you think this is about ethnic cleansing, you are fooling yourself.

My wife is Russian. I get to hear the propoganda from the Russian media all the time. It’s laughable, and sad how brainwashed they are.

I guess Obama’s theory is that, if America can depose a mass-murdering tyrant who murders his own population, terrorizes and invades his neighbors and violates one UN resolution after another, then why can’t Russia depose the democratically-elected leader of a peaceful state? If Obama doesn’t see a distinction there, perhaps he’s just not nuanced enough to be president. Or to teach a 4th grade current events class.
