Obama hiding behind Daley’s skirts?

John Kass has an explanation for Stanley Kurtz for why he couldn’t access what should be public records at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Kurtz apparently didn’t read the name of the building in which the files from the Chicago Annenberg Challenge reside. It’s the Richard Daley Library, and when a Daley gets involved in a Chicago issue, openness flies right back out the door:
The relationship between the ambitious Obama and the unrepentant Ayers is a subject that excites Republicans, who haven’t really thwacked that pinata as hard as they might. It really irritates Obama and his political champion, Chicago’s sovereign lord, Mayor Richard M. Daley.
“This is a public entity,” Kurtz told us Wednesday. “I don’t understand how confidentiality of the donor would be an issue.”
You don’t understand, Mr. Kurtz? Allow me to explain. The secret is hidden in the name of the library:
The Richard J. Daley Library.
Eureka!
The son of the famous Chicago machine boss and one in his own right, Richard Daley Jr doesn’t understand why anyone would want to look into the relationship between a presidential candidate and an unrepentant domestic terrorist-cum-academic. If William Ayers was good enough to wangle a Chicago job with the help of his father, Mayor Daley wondered aloud, why would anyone question him?
The mayor expressed his frustrations with outside agitators like Kurtz.
“People keep trying to align himself with Barack Obama,” Daley said. “It’s really unfortunate. They’re friends. So what? People do make mistakes in the past. You move on. This is a new century, a new time. He reflects back and he’s been making a strong contribution to our community.”
Had Ayers actually apologized for his radical terrorism as a member of the Weather Underground, Daley’s lament would make sense. In fact, though, Ayers has repeatedly refused to apologize for his bombings and his terrorist actions, nor has his wife Bernardine Dohrn repented of her connections to bombings, thefts, and murder. To this day, they still speak publicly about the need to overthrow the capitalist system of the United States and call America a “monster”.
They’re friends. So what? Well, most Americans don’t have friends who plotted to bomb the Pentagon, or assisted radicals in robberies that resulted in murder. Not only did Barack Obama make these people his friends, he worked closely with them on two separate projects, the Woods Foundation — and that pesky Chicago Annenberg Challenge that UIC, a public institution, ran. These were voluntary associations, not a case of both being hired by a corporate manager and forced to work together. In fact, Obama chose to work for Ayers at the CAC.
Kass notes that a release now will prove rather pointless. Daley’s people will have sanitized the records sufficiently by now that when Obama eventually demands their release, the only connection between him and Ayers will be the letterhead. The Daley machine understands its role in protecting Obama, and they’re going to make sure it gets done right.
Tom Maguire has outstanding coverage of this story, and both The Swamp and Top of the Ticket have begun covering it as well.

Obama Spent More on Ads in July Than McCain Spent on Election
And still he is running behind.

Can someone tell me what the occasion was for Ayers to get his photo taken stepping on our flag?
Man that pisses me off.
carbon_footprint on August 21, 2008 at 9:22 AM
Well, Duh. It calls his judgement into question and needs to be explored.
TooTall on August 21, 2008 at 9:23 AM
Yes, William Ayers only plotted bombing a dance attended by young military officers and their wives, didn’t everybody do that during the summer of love? It’s time to move on.
Where William Ayers deserves to be is on his knees, spitting out his broken teeth on a Chicago sidewalk, while Barack Obama sobs helplessly, like the gutless little street punk he is.
Then we can move on, you corrupt bag of rotten incompetence, Mayor Daley.
All Democrats are complete scum. Never forget it.

S.O.S. different day.
Cindy Munford on August 21, 2008 at 9:23 AM
Ayers has basically said that his only mistake was in not doing more bombing.
If they’re “just casual friends” then why not release the records? Of course, we’re still waiting for John Kerry to release his military records like he promised to do over 4 years ago.
rbj on August 21, 2008 at 9:26 AM
Offtopic, shouldn’t there be an ad campaign (from GOP), the theme being “Friends of Obama” calling his judgment in question.
Gaurav on August 21, 2008 at 9:30 AM
Granted I haven’t had my coffee yet, but I’m not sure what would be in the papers that could be worse than what is known. Obama worked with this nut, it was very radical…what else could we learn?
MamaAJ on August 21, 2008 at 9:30 AM
Oh course it would, in his mind. Anything that takes away is not worthy of mention.
upinak on August 21, 2008 at 9:32 AM
The public will be allowed to view the records eventually – just as soon as democrat ops have stuffed the damning ones into their socks and underwear and fled out the back door.

any others?
MarkTheGreat on August 21, 2008 at 9:58 AM
Whatever the reason for the picture, I have no doubt that it is a true representation of Ayers feeling about this great country. He is not repentant. He says he wishes he had done more. I remember seeing his mug shot, head cocked to the side, a bemused smirk on his face. At the time the Ayers connection came out, a lot of people were blaming Hillary. That may have been true, but Bill pardoned two weathermen (women). I never heard much about that though. All I know is that when I see the picture of Ayers stepping on the flag, I think about the fact that he teaches our children.
Glynn on August 21, 2008 at 10:03 AM
They’re friends?
That’s not what Obama has said. He claims he barely knows the guy, and says Ayers is not someone he has ever exchanged ideas with. The Annenberg Challenge papers would probably show — once again — that Obama is blatantly lying, which is undoubtedly why the papers are so mysteriously unavailable for public review now.
AZCoyote on August 21, 2008 at 10:06 AM
This has become obvious to me.
Barack Obama is William Ayers’ protege. Ayers plucked him from absolute obscurity to chair that Annenberg Challenge program, and that gave him the entree to the upper echelons of liberal Chicago society and politics. Ayers later hosted the first major political coming-out party for Obama in his home.
Why? What did Bill Ayers see in this young nobody? What was his intention in taking young Barack under his wing and grooming him? And what will Bill Ayers’ role be if Barack Obama becomes President of the United States?
There’s a HELL of a story here for someone to find out, and I sure hope someone does before it’s too late.
rockmom on August 21, 2008 at 10:07 AM
That’s not the unrepentant terrorist that I knew.

I love this pic (the look on the idiot’s face is absolutely priceless) but I would REALLY love to see a screen shot from that documentary where he’s walking around Chicago with the baseball bat. What an unbelievable tool.

The obama papers are probably being stored right next to the 1960 ballots for Nixon…
rbb on August 21, 2008 at 10:15 AM
I tell you, the RNC and McCain need to spend serious hours and money digging into BHO’s past in the corrupt cesspool that is Chicago. Our reporters in Chicago are too afraid (with the slight exception of Mr. Kass, who is a paraiah at city hall, but a high-enough-profile one that the mayor’s goons can’t do what they’d like to him) to investigate the Most Corrupt City and Mayor in the nation (New Orleans can’t hold a candle to it). Thousands of the dead voting in every election; blatant payoffs to the mayor’s family; city and county offices treated like fiefdoms and hereditary monarchies; and a police force that anyone with experience knows is about 90% on the take (drug dealing from squads, mostly). If the feds ever decided to investigate, there’d be almost no city officeholder not led away in shackles. Yes, it actually is that bad. But we do nothing; the populace is overwhelmingly Democrat, and either too drug-addled to care or too self-indulgent to care – they just slap their Barry O. bumper stickers on their cars to impress others with their “allegiance” and go back to watching Oprah. It’s really depressing to live here.

You left out the good parts.
Like how all of Cook County (locally pronounced “Crook County”) outside Chicago is allegedly Republican but actually Kleptocrat – as corrupt as the city just with different stickers…
Like how this makes any working Illinois Republican Party impossible – how do you have, on the one hand, a bunch of crooks claiming to be Republicans and expect ‘em to get along with the Religious Right from DuPage, and the farmers who just want to be left alone south of I-80?
Oh wait, you’re right. There *are* no good parts!
Condolences.

This is another example of one Chicago Machine Politician watching the back of another Chicago Machine Politician.
Unfortunately for these guys, especially these days with the Feds watching their every move, when a Chicago Machine Politician is watching the back of another Chicago Machine Politician, they are also looking for a good place to stick the knife in.
pilamaye on August 21, 2008 at 10:56 AM
As many here have pointed out, the story as first told wasn’t that they were friends. As first told, it was kind of hinted that Alice Palmer had chosen Ayers’s house to introduce Obama to the neighborhood, and there was ‘no evidence’ they had any other association. Then Axelrod himself said they knew each other because their kids go to school together (just not in the same decade).
They’ve covered up the association, and there has to be a reason for that.
MayBee on August 21, 2008 at 11:27 AM
If Obambi gets elected it will be interesting to watch the Chicago machine going national. The poor amateur crooks from elsewhere will get big time lessons from the pros. Professional fixers will move into any agency having a discretionary budget and the old ward heelers will be wallowing in payola some of which will be used to plan the move the important decision centers from Washington to Chicago where permanent control may be exercised long after the machine dumps the current useful idiot they’re supporting.
/sarc?
Annar on August 21, 2008 at 11:30 AM
Daley on the one hand is dismissing the association but on the other hand admits it was a “mistake” and blocks access to the truth.
That’s Chicago for ya.

“If Obambi gets elected it will be interesting to watch the Chicago machine going national.”
The Obama Cabinet will make the Clinton Cabinet look like normal people.
I can’t imagine what kind of freak show this guy would appoint with a rubber stamp Congress.
Bill Ayers might end up being the Secretary of Defense.
NoDonkey on August 21, 2008 at 11:37 AM
It’s sort of strange watching Jr. Daley “protect” Obama considering how Ayers felt about Sr. Daley. Ayers and Dohrn and minion went nuts in Chicago during Convention and “Days of Rage/whatever”.
I can’t imagine anything that hurt Sr. Daley’s reputation anymore than those days. I’m hopeful that the perfidy shown at this time by Jr. will finally have Chicago sick of the Daley’s, forevermore.
And, you all have got to see the documentary “Weather Underground”. Amazing stuff, at least.
Unrepentant is the word, is the word…

Daley stole the 1960 presidential election for John Kennedy. They tried to steal the 2000 election in Florida, but couldn’t pull it off. Stealing elections is a Daley is a family tradition. Obama is a Daley lap dog and nothing else.

In Chicago politics power and money trump anything, including family. After all, history can be conveniently rewritten later if one has the aforementioned tools.

I’d be very happy to bludgeon Ayers, Dohrn and the rest of obama’s bag of dirt with the truncheon of public opinion.
Society should have scraped our feet of these sneering low lifes long ago (..”in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan”).

You know, if you take a long look at the picture of
Ayers standing on the flag, some things come to mind. He is not a happy looking person. for a lot of personal wealth, he dresses kind of shabby, but that nodoubt is part of his mystique. Arrogant pose, standing on the flag, has to know and care it would offend some people, those he dislikes I guess. An attitude.
And what kind of guy approaching geezerhood would pose for this kind of picture?
Certainly not someone who has left behind the days of his youthful disrespect for this country, someone who figures throwing bombs was a mistake as Dimwit Daley says. No, I think we have a true believer here, who is ready to rub anyone’s nose into their inferior ideas.
And who are the people who can be friends with such a little man? People who agree with him. People who don’t agree with him are going to get the “I stand on your stupid flag, dipstick” treatment. He has the personal wealth to insulate his lifestyle from being a jerk and hating anyone not like him.
A friend of such a man should not be President of this country, and that is why those records are playing hide and seek…
