New Obama ad: Hey, McCain’s rich; Update: RNC releases Rezko memo; Update: Rezko may be sentenced on October 28

After 18 months on the trail, this is the closest he’s come to a memorable ad. Seriously. I wrote about this line of attack back when David Brock floated his “sugar mommy” turd. It’ll help Obama marginally — the appeal of class warfare is evergreen, especially in a bad economy — but it’d help a lot more if McCain actually looked the part Obama’s trying to make him play. Americans are used to the idea of politicians being filthy rich; it’s not wealth itself that puts fangs into the attack, it’s how wealth suggests luxury, entitlement, softness, and selfishness. Good luck with that, Barry. The instant response from McCain HQ:

Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people “cling” to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?

The reality is that Barack Obama’s plans to raise taxes and opposition to producing more energy here at home as gas prices skyrocket show he’s completely out of touch with the concerns of average Americans. –McCain spokesman Brian Rogers

It’s high time for a Rezko ad, just like it was high time for an Ayers ad yesterday. Still, an embarrassing gaffe this morning in forgetting how many homes he owns, nearly matched by the embarrassing lameness of Tim Kaine’s third-grade bon mot in reply. Was the Nelson Muntz “ha-ha” sound effect not available? Exit question: Is this final, definitive proof that Hillary’s not going to be VP? Surely Obama wouldn’t drop this ad and then turn around and put the $100-million-dollar woman on the ticket.

Update: Prepare for Rezko-mania: The McCain camp is e-mailing around Freddoso’s op-ed about him in today’s New York Post. Oh, the fun we’ll have with that Hillary “slum lord” soundbite if she’s the nominee.

Update: Good point at the Standard. Too bad Silky’s no longer in the picture politically. He would have come in awfully handy here.

Update: Rezko-mania arrives at last. Here’s the RNC fact sheet, in PDF format.

Update: October surprise!

Put it in a television ad, guys.

Wow…Obambi really is such a loser. That’s the best he’s got? Don’t vote for McCain because he owns 7 houses? Weak.

JustTruth101 on August 21, 2008 at 12:10 PM

Stay classy, Barack Obama.

Kudos for McCain’s swift and brilliant response. If he could make a response ad on that, it would be fantastic.

Is Obama that stupid? Doesn’t he know that illogical populism always fails? Not to mention the fact that the houses aren’t McCain’s…they’re his wife’s, and bound by a pre-nup.

Obama’s camp is totally desparate at this point. Just pretend that Hillary was the nominee. Would we be seeing this kind of BS? It would be a little more sophisticated.

danking70 on August 21, 2008 at 12:15 PM

I could care less how many homes McCain has as long as he didn’t get financing from a slumlord.

Since Obama has only “one” home, perhaps he can send his half-brother another $1 a month.

moonsbreath on August 21, 2008 at 12:15 PM

Or sell one to fund Obama’s discarded Kenyan school! Or both!

But the Rezko tie in is the strongest, seeing as how Obama now opened the door on the William Ayers story.

Surely the RNC has a commercial ready to go showing how Obama sent government money to Rezko who then built uninhabitable slums for the poor.

“But recently, John McCain said: ‘the fundamentals of our economy are strong.’ … Hmm.”

More of the same from obama.

One of McCain’s ads claimed that the economy was “in shambles.”

So which one is it?

This is my favorite video that shows Obama and McCain speaking on the economy from April 18, 2008. Please forgive me if I’ve posted this a few times, I see this as a very clear lie from Obama that he got away with. Hopefully this video will be something new to at least a few people. McCain’s people should use this sort of split-screen reply to Obama’s continued false claims about McCain. They don’t have to use the same video, as Obama gives them new material just about every week.

wise_man on August 21, 2008 at 12:16 PM

Class warfare does work for voters that are already going to vote for the Dems. The same voters who year after year vote themselves goodies from the Federal government will always vote for the Dems. That’s why class warfare doesn’t do anything to realign the voters to one party or the other.

DerKrieger on August 21, 2008 at 12:17 PM

“When he’s worked as a community organizer, helping inner-city poor organize and educate themselves to improve their lot in life”

How is organized protests to beg for more government money, helping them to “improve their lot in life”? Not everyone can be Al Sharpton.

Obama built his mansion on an obvious bribe, this will be the impetus to expose that fact, indict Obama and to hopefully have Obama’s ass in jail soon, along with his whiny wife.

Better stay away from the Community Organizer (TM) thing. Turns out he didn’t help organize much. Made a lot of nice promises though. Kind of like what he is doing now. Also what is BO’s excuse for having a family member living in abject property? The “Man of the People” meme doesn’t work.

My thoughts exactly. What is Barry thinking? I thought Barry was above personal attacks? I guess the gloves have officially come off – - good, there’s a lot that needs to be fleshed out, as far as Barry is concerned. Time to go after him for all his questionable associations and obvious elitism.

Independent Assessments of Impact of Chicago Annenberg Challenge:

The 2003 report concludes that the Challenge had no effect on student outcomes.

And is the quality of life in inner city Chicago really all that better?

As all those houses are probably his wife’s property I’m sure he doesn’t know/care about all of them. Is this the best the Dems can come up with against McCain? Very weak.

Rich?

The developers Obama created tax credits for while a State Senator are rich.

The poor in his district are still poor.

drjohn on August 21, 2008 at 12:25 PM

I think it’s a very effective ad (and a bad McCain gaffe), but only for the short-term. Like yesterday’s “guilt by association” attack, Obama has opened the door wide for McCain’s obvious, more damaging counter-attack.

And every time Obama slings mud, the dirtier his halo gets. His entire campaign was based on transcending dirty, common politics. That manicured impression has now been squandered and it isn’t even convention time yet.

Without the Hopenchange Hooey, what else has he got? Experience? Leadership? Judgment? None of the Above?

Exurban Jon on August 21, 2008 at 12:25 PM

Wethal on August 21, 2008 at 12:29 PM

I have to thank Obama for working so hard to bring the GOP base into this election. Yesterday he ran a commercial in Georgia slamming McCain for a relationship with Ralph Reed. If you have to, please google Ralph Reed to see how stupid that is.

Now he’s running a commercial bashing McCain and his wife for having achieved material success.

So, the evangelicals are gonna get behind McCain big time, and the business community is gonna get behind McCain big time. I think those were two areas where McCain was struggling a bit. Of course the attacks on the cross in the sand POW story will only help solidify McCain’s substantial lead among the military community.

Please Barry, run some more ads. I think they are brilliant. And be sure to thank your “man of the people” sugardaddy George Soros for me.

As for Obama’s work helping to educate the less fortunate, the reviews of his and Ayer’s collaboration on the Annenberg Challenge were less than inspiring. funky chicken on August 21, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Exactly. McCain “owns” the home, that his children live in.

This is of course the left’s attempt to get back at the time when John Kerry told the union people that he owned pickup trucks and SUV’s … and then when he went to speak to the environmentalists, he underplayed that, mentioned something else. And when questioned about that his response was ‘I don’t own them, my family owns them.’

- so this is the left’s great plan, to explain John McCain’s expensive shoes and multiple mansions. I wouldn’t be surprised if they somehow tried to get back at the Obama/Rezko deal with the claim that McCain’s is a ’slumlord’ because one of the houses isn’t as nice as the others.

And xinay on the eanday. Having him as the DNC chair has been wonderful for us. – Payed back multiple dividends, in fact.

At least the McCains share their wealth with family members, unlike Senator “America’s biggest moral failure is its failure to help the less fortunate” Obama. Obama’s made millions, yet his own siblings in Africa live in squalor, and he’s done nothing to follow up on the promise he made a few years to help the little Kenyan school that many of his relatives attend.

Then there’s Michelle “you college graduates should go into public service jobs” Obama. What job did she take upon graduating from law school? A high-paying job as a private attorney in a large corporate law firm. On the other hand, Cindy McCain has worked tirelessly (and quietly) for years for childrens’ charities.

moonsbreath, B. Hussein probably has a second home in the district, which, along with his radical church here in the capital, has apparently been investigated by the completely unbiased mainstream media.

Now what you do with your wealth is something else. Cindy McCain was a teacher of disabled children when John met her, despite being a beer heiress. We know she paid for the hospital recovery of not only her own adopted daughter, but another infant from Mother T’s orphanage. I’m guessing this is the tip of the iceberg w/r/t the McCains’ generosity. Sometimes you have to toot your own horn, and Mac’s been remiss about doing so.

The Obamas, on the other hand… how much do they give to charity, and is that a charity other than the black separatist church that gave Jeremiah Wright a retirement mansion in caucasianville? And yeah, that other buck per month to double George Obama’s budget.

This ad might have been effective if it had gone after McCain for being so old he can’t remember how many houses he owns. The only shot Obama has at driving up McCain’s negatives is to make people worry that he is senile. Voters know that all politicians at this level are rich. Otherwise no Kennedy or Bush would ever have been elected to anything.

rockmom on August 21, 2008 at 12:47 PM

Its obvious that McCain is an out of touch rich guy, just as his own rich father did, Mac made sure his sons had cushy jobs serving in the military over in Iraq and Afghanistan.

POLITICO
Jonathan Martin & Mike Allen

hack:

said in an interview Wednesday that he was uncertain how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own.

“I think — I’ll have my staff get to you,” McCain told Politico in Las Cruces, N.M. “It’s condominiums where — I’ll have them get to you.”

The correct answer is at least four, located in Arizona, California and Virginia, according to his staff. Newsweek estimated this summer that the couple owns at least seven properties.

McCain did NOT say he didn’t know or was uncertain how many homes he owns. So McCain enjoys “living” in at least four, and may own seven properties. Most Americans do own property, and most Americans do invest in real estate. There’s no reason for shock and awe that McCain shares similarities with wealthy Americans who own more than one property. It may be that some are strictly “investment” homes that he hardly visits and leaves to his accountant to maintain. A US Senator running for POTUS is hardly wrapped up in the menial task of counting houses before falling asleep.

McCain said he’d have his staff answer that question. Reasons might include the timing. Giving a direct response would take whatever message he just finished making “off topic” per headline clip for the likes of Jonathan Martin or another hatchet man to make hay with a “rich” or as it was presented by Martin “uncertainty of mind” quip.

As per wanting to know the exact number, why bother confronting a candidate in public when all the facts are in the tax records. Either Jonathan Martin is starving for a “gotcha” moment to preen in the press, or he’s too lazy to do his own research of public records. Either way, Martin’s approach and message are tacky.

If that question was so pertinent to ask in public and to write about, for the record, how many houses does Jonathan Martin own or not own? It doesn’t matter.

If McCain were Gore spouting deprivation to everyone (yet living the highest of all lives) then there would be relevance. But McCain is NOT Gore’s twin, nor will McCain’s Presidency finish strangling Americans with more Marxist oppressive legislation to tax us dry and prevent our personal and professional industry and independence (KNOCK ON WOOD).

And yes, until Martin actually apologizes for butchering Fred Thompson’s campaign efforts to stabilize the GOP platform upon Constitutional founding principles, there’s no reason to respect Martin’s “journalistic” motives as anything beyond selfish gloat syndrome, a common trait, all the more reason to avoid absorbing.

So it seems.

I’m certain that the people helped by Cindy’s charity would rather that they were still suffering in poverty and ill-health rather than to be tainted by a rich person’s money.

Bishop on August 21, 2008 at 12:54 PM

So Mac has a bunch of houses?

I wonder how many carpenters, plumbers, electicians, sheetrockers, landscapers, (and on and on) were given good jobs while building those houses;

and, how many houses, cars clothes, school supplies, gasoline, food, (and on and on), were bought with the wages from those jobs;

and, how much cheaper other houses are in those markets because Mac’s houses aren’t for sale thereby reducing supply;

and, how much in taxes are paid for those houses, wages, and goods and services (and on and on) because of the houses that Mac owns;

and, on and on.

McCain’s Quick Response Team is pretty impressive. I love the “right back atcha” snark. This tactic is a loser for The One. Relatively speaking, way more flanks to protect.

I watched a good portion of the Fox and CNN profiles on Obama and McCain this week, and it’s really startling to behold the enormous difference in the character and life experiences of these two. It couldn’t be more glaring. McCain has been through enough for ten lifetimes and it seems Obama is still in high school, especially the way he’s behaving this week.

McCain has suffered through unspeakable horrors with dignity and strength and Obama is just a spoiled punk.

JammieWearingFool on August 21, 2008 at 12:56 PM

Maybe the reason McCain didn’t answer is because he doesn’t want anyone to know?

Jesus, he already has to give information on what he has money wise via a statement. And if the houses are in his wife’s name, he has to sign a piece of paper (depending on State) that ensures that Cindy owns the houses and he gets nothing and has nothing from them.

I don’t see a problem here. John Kerry has multiple houses (aka via the ketchup Queen). Pelosi has a BUNCH of California Property. Who the hell cares what McCain has. ugh!

I saw a few minutes of each of those last night. Not biased much, right?
Forget the content, I couldn’t get past the doom doom doom doomsday music track of McCain’s versus the light jazz of Obama’s.

Memo to McCain Campaign and/or RNC:

It’s time to cross check Barry’s donors with properties owned. My guess is that $13MM will seem pretty small compared with many of his highflyers!

Then run the ad that says Barry O should clean his own home, listing his donors and their homes with pitures. Think Bab’s joint by the sea, for example . . . .

Drudge has had the Kaine and Obama attack ad story up for a while now.

You would think Drudge would also link the McCain camps response.

McCain is the former and Obama the latter.
