How many houses does McCain own? None

posted at 7:50 pm on August 21, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Kenneth Vogel comes up with the answer at Politico that eluded John McCain in his earlier interview.  The actual number of houses owned by McCain is … zero.  That’s right — the Senator doesn’t own a single property in his own name:

John McCain’s family owns at least eight properties — not the seven Democrats are alleging or the four McCain’s staff identified — according to a Politico analysis of property and tax records, as well as interviews.

The presumptive Republican nominee, though, may have some wiggle room in explaining why he couldn’t immediately provide an answer when asked by Politico how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own. Sen. McCain himself does not own any of the properties. They’re all owned by Cindy McCain, her dependent children and the trusts and companies they control. …

Politico’s analysis of the McCain records found that five of the eight properties were purchased between the summer of 2004 and this February, for a total of $11 million. And the analysis found that the McCains hired additional household help in 2007.

The five new properties are all condominiums, and they include three in Phoenix — one of which became the couple’s primary Phoenix residence after a Cindy McCain family trust in 2006 sold for $3.2 million the house in which they raised their children — and a pair outside San Diego.

The new properties joined three previously owned by Cindy McCain, her dependent children and their trusts: a scenic ranch outside Sedona, Ariz., where John McCain has entertained staff, prospective running mates and political reporters; a three-bedroom Arlington, Va., condo that’s been John McCain’s Washington-area residence since 1993; a La Jolla, Calif. condo that is home to Cindy McCain’s elderly aunt and on which the trust recently paid nearly $7,000 in back taxes.

I suspected that this was the actual answer when the story first made headlines.  The McCains have a pre-nuptial agreement that separates their finances.  The “homes”, as Barack Obama and his campaign put it, are mostly investment properties in Cindy McCain’s trust.  Since John McCain has no involvement in his wife’s business affairs, he would have little knowledge of the assets in her portfolio.

Of course, a couple of these aren’t investment properties.  Cindy bought a condo for their daughter, for instance, and she purchased another in La Jolla for an elderly aunt whom she supports.  The McCains live primarily in a 6600-square-foot condo in Phoenix and a three-bedroom condo in Arlington when Congress is in session.  They also have a Sedona ranch that again is part of Cindy’s portfolio.

No doubt, McCain’s clumsy answer gave Obama room to poke fun at him as rich and out of touch at the same time.  However, McCain himself doesn’t own any property and isn’t “rich”, and Cindy and her family earned their money honestly.  They certainly didn’t partner with a now-convicted political fixer to buy a house in a tony neighborhood.

It makes me feel so much better to know that McCain sponges off of his wife. That’ll make it so much easier for him to continue to sponge off of special interest groups.

Ed, the McCains were married in 1980. Prenup agreements at that time would have been highly unusual.

Has anyone actually seen this agreement?

Isn’t this the way it always is with liberals? If you don’t answer fast enough, they smear you with lies. By the time you get to the truth, which requires more than a 3 word answer( which I know, too complex for them to follow…) they’ve lost interest and are looking at the next shiny object. But the smear stands. I despise liberals.

Sponge off his wife? So if one spouse owns property, the other shouldn’t be allowed to use it even with the spouse’s permission? Dude, you have a weird view of marriage.

I haven’t seen the document, and I doubt anyone but their attorneys have, either. Prenups were not all that uncommon among the very wealthy, even in 1980. In the McCains’ case, it stemmed from the wishes of Cindy’s father that McCain not get a hold of the family business. He seems to have gone along with it pretty readily. I think he honestly doesn’t give two hoots about money. He’s not getting any of that property if they divorce or she dies, and that’s why he’s totally unfamiliar with Cindy’s holdings.

Somehow, I think Obama’s supporters are a little more forgiving that McCain’s Church Lady Christians, Rick.

Win for Obama, I think.

alphie on August 21, 2008 at 8:40 PM

Know any Church Lady Christians, do you? If you did, you’d probably find out those little old grey haired ladies possess more forgiveness than anything ever to come out of the Rev Wright’s Trinity Church of Christ. I’m not sure how any liberal arrives at the point where claiming Christians are so much more unforgiving than seculars and atheists. Logic and the powers of observation don’t seem to be particularly strong points in their character. Because forgiveness isn’t a concept born out of politics. It came from religion, and remains the primary focus of the Christian faith to this day.

Because I haven’t found a single Obama supporter yet who doesn’t want Hillary to go away and quit messing up the O’s party, and for me to go to jail for being a Republican. Not just my candidate to be defeated in the election, but honest to “goodness” disgust and hatred that I, as a Republican, actually exist. They will ignore all other distinctions once they know someone is for Obama. But say you are a Republican first, and jail, disgust, seizure of my personal property, and comments and disbelief involving the war crimes of the Bush administration and the stupidity of my family and myself follows. How did I ever get to be an engineer when I am clearly stupid or out of touch with reality?

I am waiting for the morning after the election when the sun still rises in the east, and the US military still stands watch, and the guy who served 5.5 yrs in a North Vietnamese prison cell, served in the US Congress for over 30 yrs, who has kids who serve their country, a wife who adores him, and is one of the most honest Men I have heard of, takes his victory lap with a humble and contrite heart, and no bad words for Mr. Obama. And I’ll open a new gallon of milk, pour some chocolate sauce into it, make myself some ham and eggs…… and laugh my ass off. Justice. And a great breakfast.

It just don’t get better than that!

If Maverick and Cindy were to divorce, it’s possible he wouldn’t get to keep any of the homes. So no, these aren’t “his” homes, he just gets to live in them so long as he stays married to Cindy.

Where’s the logic & critical thinking? How about a straight answer for once or are the Democrap ideas that crappy?

I say congrat’s to the McCain family and any other person who gets out there and works their arse off for what they want instead of whining about what someone else has.

You know, anybody who has flown fighters in combat, been shot down and survived years of torture- has pretty much proved his masculinity. So I figure McCain can still be considered a man’s man, even if his wife brings home the bacon.

Just an unfortunate similarity between St Mc and Bush 41… I agree.

“There also were several comparisons with an iconic moment in the 1992 presidential campaign, during which the first President Bush seemed unfamiliar with a grocery store scanner.

Arlington homeowner, Kevin Appel, speaking in front of McCain’s condo Friday, drew on that same reference and wondered how McCain could be unaware of his property holdings at a time when so many Americans were struggling to maintain the single homes they owned.

“I assume,” Appel intoned, “that he has the mental acuity to know what his finances are.”

Or not..?

Come on now folks, really… If a guy doesn’t know the difference between Sunni and Shiite, doesn’t know that al Qaeda is not being trained in Iran, how the hell do you expect him to know how many homes he has or where they are located for that matter…?

Lighten up already, Mc has…!

Remember Dan Quayle, he was known for being real “light in his loafers”.

Mc’s loafers are much more expensive than anything Danny Boy ever wore…!

She founded and ran a non-profit organization, the American Voluntary Medical Team, from 1988 to 1995 that organized trips by medical personnel to disaster-struck or war-torn third-world areas. She continues to be an active philanthropist and serves on the boards of several charitable organizations.

Yea! Despicable rich a$$ family.

In April 1986, she and her father invested $359,100 in a shopping center project with Phoenix banker Charles Keating. This, combined with her role as a bookkeeper who later had difficulty finding receipts for family trips on Keating’s jet, caused complications for her husband during the Keating Five scandal, when he was being examined for his role regarding oversight of Keating’s bank.

Might be a few reasons why he doesn’t want to know anything about her financial matters, and besides the prenuptial agreement decided to keep his finances separate and file a separate tax return. Not necessarily because she and her family’s corrupt but maybe because she’s a dumb blonde. I mean come on her name is Cindy Lou, she was a USC cheerleader, a sorority girl, and worked with Down Syndrome kids for crying out loud.

and then there’s the corrupt father…

Jim Hensley then served three years as an officer in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He was a bombardier on B-17 Flying Fortresses. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

As for being a convicted felony? It’s interesting how liberals want to accuse people of having fathers as felons, and bootleggers but seem to have no problem with Chappaquiddick Kennedy.

I’m not sure if you are being serious or sarcastic. But just in case you (or any others) mis-read MY comment, I WAS being sarcastic. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Cindy, her family, or McCain. I as irritated by alphie’s comments and think alphie’s pulling at straws.

The Senate Ethics Committee probe of the Keating Five began in November 1990, and committee Special Counsel Robert Bennett recommended that McCain and Glenn be dropped from the investigation. They were not. McCain believes Democrats on the committee blocked Bennett’s recommendation because he was the lone Keating Five Republican.

In February 1991, the Senate Ethics Committee found McCain and Glenn to be the least blameworthy of the five senators. (McCain and Glenn attended the meetings but did nothing else to influence the regulators.) McCain was guilty of nothing more than “poor judgment,” the committee said, and declared his actions were not “improper nor attended with gross negligence.”
