“My husband said he was going to see his family,” she said. “And the Russians said again, ‘Are you going to the American side?’”

“So the Russians view you as the American side, even though there are no Americans here.”

“Yes,” she said. “Because our way is for democracy.”

There are no Americans in Georgia? :) I think Allah is now going North Korea on us. Propaganda can now even be insane, not just “false”.

Anyone who says in the real life “because our way is for democracy” is a brainwashed idiot.

Or perhaps they just feel very strongly about it because they being forced to relive a repressive past. Poor “idiots”, not smart enough to realize the wonders of pseudo-communism.

Of course that’s not what was claimed.

There are no Americans in that particular location/town.

I stand corrected. I think Michael Totten did mean no Americans in Georgia not just that area.

I’m sure he meant no Americans of consequence that pose any threat to Russia.

Well, I’m not sure where on the political spectrum freevillage is.

But his comments on US-Russian relations mystify me.

The US, according to him, “never helped Russia” following the collapse of communism and never acted as a “friend” toward the country.

My goodness, the US could have raped the country following the collapse of the communists. Just went and bought everything on fire sale prices (or just bribed officials to hand it over).

But we did none of that.

So, I’m not sure where he’s coming from.

Were you ever in an X-soviet state? I was in Georgia before their new president took over and cleaned house. It has made a serious turnaround economically since then.

These people realy do believe in freedom because they never had it like you and me. People like you seem to take it for granted, therefor cannot understand why so many other countries risk so much just to get a taste of it.

If anyone is attempting brainwashing it is the gov’ts censoring and controlling the media LIKE Russia and Venezuela. Democracy and freedom are not brainwashing. Freedom is a natural desire of all living things of wanting to live and prosper without interference or restrictions.

El Guapo on August 20, 2008 at 11:08 PM

Yes, I agree. As I added, I think he meant no Americans of consequence that pose any military/security threat to Russia.

The threat to Moscow from Tbilisi is indeed one of independence and democracy. Moscow wants these countries Finlandized if not in actual Russia control.

If they’re democracies and are open and have independent institutions, Putin’s control of the country is threatened.

Now thats funny. most people who are successful in coming here from a communist state are more in favor of conservatism and fredom. (i would hope) that would be like a Cuban evading death by drowning just to come here for a better job and life, and finding it, but then protesting agaist our free states and the freedom that gave him his new job and more pay than he has ever seen before. Wait that just defined George Soros. well, okay HE IS brainwashed!

Revisionist history is a powerful thing when your country does not allow any corrections or oversight from other media. “Propaganda”. Bush is Hitler too, remember? Even though it was the Arab leaders who were siding with Hitler because of a common cause. Yet we still have idiots calling Bush, “Hitler”.

Peopel forget why NATO was formed in the first place. It was because Russia (USSR), a member of the newly formed UN, refused to let go of the land it was occupying after invading East Europe to destroy the Nazis. Nato was formed without Russia to “counter” this, thus the beginning of the Cold War.

Georgian country women seem to understand who their friends and enemies are. “I am very thankful to the West,” Maya said as her eyes welled up with tears. “They support us so much. We thought we were alone. I am so thankful for the support we have from the United States and from the West. The support is very important for us.” She tried hard to maintain her dignity and not cry in front of me,

We are so blessed to live in America.

These people’s lives will be determined by our actions. Nor NATO. Not the french. Not the UN. (Most)Republicans can see this and understand what is at stake not only for these human beings, but what happens after this, the next target of Russia’s. (A few)Democrats also see this, but a lot more don’t. People like Pat Buchanan, don’t. Lord help us and Lord help these people if countries like the US don’t try to help as many people around the world when we can. Lord have mercy on the people who have read this, who know better and would ‘leave them to their destiny’ as they democrats who were opposed to keeping the troops in Iraq, wanting them to fall victim to the thug with the biggest army who wanted to slaughter them all.

I wish I could say that all Americans would want this woman and others not to be bullied, molested or killed by a force or government that wishes them dead. And in this case, Russia. It’s amazing how far we’ve come from the end of WW2 till today.

If the democrats fielded normal politicians, then I would be very happy to see the presidency leap-frog from D to R.

It’s like it’s all a game to them now. There are so many examples, but I like this particular one. Go to Michelle Malkin’s site and search “Why I can’t trust the Democrats on, well, anything”. It’s a quick but enlightening example. And this is my opinion on all democrats, until I am proven otherwise. So far, the two that I do trust is Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman. I’m sure there are others. I sure don’t trust Pelosi and Reid.

Cute and typical that you show up in threads like this, being mocking and trollish while you are completely absent in posts where Russia makes threats against Poland, Ukraine, and this nation. Easy to snipe when you still manage to have minor reason to scoff at pro-Western sentiment, but when those fly out the window due to your home country acting like the bunch of imperialist conquering barbarians they’ve always been, you’re nowhere to be found.

Make excuses for your Soviet berserker pals all you like, bud. They’re going to go too far, and then they’re going to be reminded why they fell 17 years ago.

Anyway, Michael Totten never fails to disappoint. I don’t know of any blogger more learned about Eastern Europe, and he writes like a storybook. Takes a lot of guts going to Tbilisi in the middle of this, and I’m very glad he’s come back with some truth about the attitudes and situations over there. Hell, I’d say future presidential candidates should keep him in mind for foreign policy positions.

Likewise, the women seemed to understand what Russian imperialism has always been about—and not just during the Soviet era. “Why do you think the Russians are doing this in your village?” I said.

“They want our territories,” Nana said. “Some of them are Ossetians, too, not only Russians, and not only soldiers. Some are there just to steal things, from Ossetia and Chechnya.”

Isn’t it odd how a nation who, for three quarters of a century, railed against the individual trying to acquire things for themselves, is doing exactly what it hated its citizens for trying to do?

After the women’s beach volleyball team beat China for the Gold, May-Treanor and Walsh ran around the court waving American flags. drunyan8315 on August 20, 2008 at 11:59 PM

It’s amazing how far we’ve come from the end of WW2 till today. (11:39 PM)

I know that we weren’t 100% behind going to war, but we did go. millions of Americans volunteered, women went to factories to build machinery and everything was rationed and people bought war bonds and planted victory gardens.

And now, after viewing the images if Iraqi’s with purple fingers after having voted, the left replies, “so what, they are occupied by us.” The democrats themsleves recognized the danger of Saddam while Clinton was president, but when Bush actually did something about Saddam, they all (except one, it would seem) changed their tune. And most follow the line that Bush lied. This is so bizarre that it borders on insanity.

And today, in Georgia, we have people from a sovereign nation who are threatened with ethnic cleansing and murder by Russia – and the UN, NATO, and just about the entire democrat party it would seem, replying with “Meh.” It really is maddening.

freevillage on August 20, 2008 at 11:57 PM

CIA world fact book:

Georgia’s economy has sustained robust GDP growth of close to 10% in 2006 and 12% in 2007, based on strong inflows of foreign investment and robust government spending. However, a widening trade deficit and higher inflation are emerging risks to the economy. Areas of recent improvement include increasing foreign direct investment as well as growth in the construction, banking services and mining sectors. Georgia’s main economic activities include the cultivation of agricultural products such as grapes, citrus fruits, and hazelnuts; mining of manganese and copper; and output of a small industrial sector producing alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, metals, machinery, aircraft and chemicals. The country imports nearly all its needed supplies of natural gas and oil products. It has sizeable hydropower capacity, a growing component of its energy supplies. Despite the severe damage the economy suffered due to civil strife in the 1990s, Georgia, with the help of the IMF and World Bank, has made substantial economic gains since 2000, achieving positive GDP growth and curtailing inflation. Georgia’s GDP growth neared 10% in 2006 and 2007 despite restrictions on commerce with Russia. Areas of recent improvement include increased foreign direct investment as well as growth in the construction, banking services, and mining sectors. In addition, the reinvigorated privatization process has met with success. However, a widening trade deficit and higher inflation are emerging risks to the economy. Georgia has suffered from a chronic failure to collect tax revenues; however, the new government is making progress and has reformed the tax code, improved tax administration, increased tax enforcement, and cracked down on corruption. Government revenues have increased nearly four fold since 2003. Due to improvements in customs and financial (tax) enforcement, smuggling is a declining problem. Georgia has overcome the chronic energy shortages of the past by renovating hydropower plants and by bringing newly available natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan. It also has an increased ability to pay for more expensive gas imports from Russia. The country is pinning its hopes for long-term growth on a determined effort to reduce regulation, taxes and corruption in order to attract foreign investment. The construction on the Baku-T’bilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, the Baku-T’bilisi-Erzerum gas pipeline, and the Kars-Akhalkalaki Railroad are part of a strategy to capitalize on Georgia’s strategic location between Europe and Asia and develop its role as a transit point for gas, oil and other goods.

I’m sure that alone was enough to drive the bear crazy. Can’t have democracy actually prospering, and corruption being dealt with, so close to home.

Even through Babelfish, you still stink of patchouli and socialism.

Note that so far, in my opinion, there is no indication that Russian troops mass in its lead any action against innocent civilians.

You remind me of Chomsky, the Chomsky that fawned over Pol Pot as he slaughtered millions. Except that in this case, I guess you’d be Cambodian and a propagandist for the Khmer Rouge.

spmat on August 21, 2008 at 1:02 AM

The Russians murdered several thousand civilians

Can I see the pictures?

freevillage on August 21, 2008 at 1:03 AM

Really. Have you ever been faced with an enemy in your front yard? Have you ever lived in a place where the stability of day to day life is suddenly in jeopardy? Have you ever even been to Georgia or Azerbijan to see what life is like there?

Let me answer that for you. No you haven’t. You just read the Times, and watch network news and wonder why we all just can’t get along. Kum-Ba-Fuckin-Ya.

Come out of mommy’s basement for awhile. There are folks in the world who have lived real oppression and fear. They don’t like it, and it isn’t anything remotely like what your feeble imagination can dredge up.

Democracy is a big freakin deal to those who are in danger of losing it. It’s an even bigger deal to those who didn’t have it, now have it, and are in danger of losing it again.

It’s worth fighting for. Someday you peacniks will realize that.

Winner of the thread. :)))))

If a group of Russian soldiers showed you their military identification, and proceeded to rape and kill a group of children right before your very eyes, you’d claim their IDs were fraudulent. You’re a modern-day Stalin sympathizer, no more. If you have any balls, return to the land where they will provide you with all the propaganda you desire.

MadisonConservative on August 21, 2008 at 1:08 AM

Anyone who says in the real life “because our way is for democracy” is a brainwashed idiot.

freevillage on August 20, 2008 at 10:48 PM

The unintentional self-parody of that statement, coming from you – of all people – is perhaps the single funniest thing I’ve ever seen.

Projection much?

Professor Blather on August 21, 2008 at 1:10 AM

So, I’m not sure where he’s coming from.

SteveMG on August 20, 2008 at 11:04 PM

He’s an undereducated, semi-literate leftist Russian. Check his blog. If you can speak a little Russian, its endlessly amusing.

So no pictures? Your sorry attempts to be my shrink are still pathetic.

Why do you come here?

WisCon on August 20, 2008 at 11:50 PM

Easy answer: he comes here to remind you that no matter how disappointing conservative politicians may be, they’re always infinitely better choices than liberals.

He’s here to point out Professor Blather’s First Rule of Politics: Liberals can’t win elections as long as they keep remind us what they really are.

Is that your thousands of dead bodies? Is there a single person here who can at least pass his annual physical?

freevillage on August 21, 2008 at 1:18 AM

You can tell a lot about someone by who hates them.

The fact that totalitarians hate the US is a very good sign. Kudos to you.

Good point. And new. Any chance you might have pictures of thousands killed by the Russians?

I wonder how the peace movement in Russia is going these days…

VolMagic on August 21, 2008 at 1:35 AM

Frankly, after skimming the douchebag’s blog through Babelfish, it’s going to be difficult to quote him saying anything of consequence. Most of the cite consists of him stroking his over-inflated epeen, waxing lyrically about how concerned he is about stuff and congratulating himself for being so awesome.

But hey, it’s Babelfish. Might be some Gogol hiding in that mountain of suck for all I know.

spmat on August 21, 2008 at 1:41 AM

Pretty badly in my estimation.

Odds that the woman actually said “because our way is for democracy” unprompted are pretty slim, free.

Totten has a way of hooking up with the propaganda organs of whatever country he’s visiting, and indeed he is touring Georgia in the company of the wife of a Georgian government official.

It’s possible to feel sorry for the Georgians without feeling the need to help them, Johan.

I would say it under those circumstances, absolutely.

The fact that these words sound trite to you either speaks poorly of your grasp of the reality of the situation there, or of your moral values.
