PUMA alert: “Massive” e-mail campaign to derail Obama at convention

Hillary Clinton’s supporters will not go quietly, it seems. According to a Scripps-Howard report this morning, unnamed backers of Hillary have begun a “massive” e-mail campaign insisting that she won more votes and is the only electable candidate in 2008. Perhaps, in consideration of the polling free-fall Barack Obama has experienced this summer, they may have a point (via TMV):
A massive e-mail and Internet campaign is under way aimed at derailing the nomination of Barack Obama and making Hillary Clinton the party’s standard bearer next week at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. …
Most of the messages Lowery has received from across the country come from Hillary supporters making the case that she won more voters’ votes in the primaries, she won bigger states, that Obama won states that won’t vote Democratic in November, and that she is the only “electable” Democrat.
I’m not sure how electable Hillary would be, but Obama’s looking pretty weak at the moment. Having jettisoned reform, he’s not shown any substantial reason why people should vote for him, which has resulted in double-digit swings in several national polls, with Zogby/Reuters showing him five points behind John McCain. The PUMAs may have a point, at least in terms of Obama’s prospects.
However, the insurgent campaign among Democrats has an ugly tone to it, according to some who have seen the e-mails:
A pledged Obama delegate, [county party chair Keith] Norman noted that some of the attacks are overtly racist and that in one instance Obama was likened to “the Anti-Christ.”
Hold the phone! Didn’t Obama accuse Republicans of these tactics? When can we look forward to Obama appearing on national television accusing Democrats of being racist and xenophobic, and especially Hillary Clinton supporters? We have seen much more evidence of that than anything Team Obama has ever produced from McCain’s campaign or the RNC, which Obama has repeatedly smeared as racist.
Things could get very interesting in Denver next week, folks.
Update (AP): Meanwhile, what’s Tony Rodham doing meeting with top McCain aides? (Sample quote: “Poor Hillary. You can pick you friends, but you can’t pick your family.”) New VP speculation: Hillary on both tickets!

Yeah, his freefall in the polls, and the changes in his rhetoric and positions, could make this a VERY interesting old style convention…
You know, the old conventions where they actualy CHOSE the candidate?
Romeo13 on August 20, 2008 at 1:17 PM
Maybe we can get Romney to challenge McCain for the nomination so that someone will watch our convention, too.

Since Saddleback there are tons of conservatives who are supporting McCain. Laura Ingraham is one that just got on board. That is just how bad Obama is.

Obama MUST chose Hillary as his running mate. Period.
If Hillary steals the nomination the African American vote is lost to her.
The AA’s will go 20 per cent or more to McCain out of spite.
With Hillary on the ticket, Obama cannot lose.

MarkTheGreat on August 20, 2008 at 1:27 PM
I was simply wondering if anyone will watch the boring and predictable Republican convention after the controversial and fireworks-filled Democrat convention the week before. I wasn’t actually suggesting that Romney or anyone else challenge our now-stable and gaining nominee. I was being facetious, you see.

This would be a lot like 1968 Democratic Convention, if in 1968, it had been Gene McCarthy that was the primary-winning shoo-in just before the convention, and Hubert Humphrey was the second-place insurgent with lots of loyal followers who don’t want to give up. Hopefully the overall result will be the same–Democrats implode, and lose.
RBMN on August 20, 2008 at 1:31 PM
“I was simply wondering if anyone will watch the boring and predictable Republican convention after the controversial and fireworks-filled Democrat convention the week before”
I’m not sure how many people watch these things anyway, I rarely do.
I read about them the next day, but they move WAY too slow for me and I imagine that’s how most people feel.

If Hillary manages to pull off a coup like this, there will be blood in the streets of Denver. Besides Five Points blowing up, the Black-bloc will have some surprises for Mayor Hick and the rest of the yokels - and, they’re Heeeeere!
I had lunch on the 16th Street Mall yesterday and saw several groups of likely black-bloc’ers.
Since I eat lunch on the Mall 2 or 3 times a week in the summer(the eye candy is superb), I’m very familiar with the diversity of its denizens. These guys were walking around in groups of 3 or 4, mid to late twenties, fit and studly (not the flaccid Green Peace types that hang around with their petitions) and wearing casual clothing - cargo shorts & T-shirts. You almost never see young white men dressed like that at lunch time (they’re dressed for office work). One group was speaking French, one German or Dutch and the other English. If not for their language, I would have placed them as undercover Delta types.
Denver’s gonna Rock next week!
lonesomecharlie on August 20, 2008 at 1:36 PM
That’s probably a challenge McCain’s people are afraid of. It’s pretty clear that McCain would not have become the nominee if it weren’t for Romney/Thompson/Huckabee voters picking each other off in states where the delegates were selected as winner-take-all. It’s also the reason I think Romney is ultimately going to be named as the VP nominee.
As for the Dems, Clinton supporters SHOULD be out there challenging Obama.

I would so love to see a major donnybrook at the DNC. Maybe they’d “draft” Jimmeh Caataa, the Goracle or some other loser of a candidate. Just so the rest of the country can see how screwed up the Democrat Party now is, get over the notion that they can seek their “salvation” from a particular political party and instead focus on each individual candidate and demand that the candidates clearly state their positions on the issues.

After Obama gets the boot, and he organizes the black community to riot! (Or Michelle will say it, if little Barry has been neutered and is unable to fake having a pair.)
Video from this convention should be very useful - hundreds of assinine comments, delegate fights, sleeping delegates, unsympathetic victim groups, etc. Statements from the political prisoners at Gitmo-Denver campus should be good for many laughs, too.

The similarities between the Dem Convention in 1968 and the Dem Convention in 2008 are inspiring…and not in a good way…for Democrats.
When they are done eating their own…they’ll be too bloated or ill to run an effective national campaign.
coldwarrior on August 20, 2008 at 1:54 PM
The chaos, should Hillary snap this out from the jaws of Obama, would be something to behold.
Entelechy on August 20, 2008 at 1:54 PM
Obama needs to step down so the Dems can flip the ticket. He just needs to be convinced it’s in his long-term interest that he appear as a humble messiah in waiting, caring only for the good of his party and his people.
Then we would get 4-8 years of “Prince Obama how we yearn for thy wise and mature leadership as our glorious king” websites.

It’s one reason the PUMAS like McCain. Because of his strong response to the racist smears, people are starting to realize that Obama’s been playing this game for a year now.

While I don’t think any Blacks would vote for Hillary, if she grabbed the nomination she would pick up enough Republicans who are impressed with her cahones to win the election. Still, the damage to all the other Democratic candidates by Blacks leaving the party would be immense.
And if McCain picks Lieberman, there could be a complete realignment of voting blocks in both parties.
pedestrian on August 20, 2008 at 2:21 PM
Hillary on both tickets?!
She won’t win a damned thing spreading herself out too thin in all directions:
1) coup as DNC POTUS trouncing Obama via Convention vote.
2) DNC VP nomination
3) RINO VP nomination
If McCain thinks he has a good rapport with Hillary, it’s only because they’ve barely dealt with each other on a daily all day basis beyond the normal courtesy level of “how’s it going”, “this one’s for you” water cooler bar talk smile for the camera. No, if McCain’s the wiz chesting his cards, the Queen of Spades better not be his choice for VP. And the same goes for Lieberman; though a great guy, so far off target on economic taxation in all guises promoting global warming nonsense that destroys America’s strengths and liberty. Pawlenty will slip down that path, taking us all down as well. And no one wants the odious Huckabee who promotes the loathing of one’s conservative neighbor. Talk about active bigotry to AVOID AT ALL COSTS, Huckabee even lacks Obama’s presumed “nuance” exercising such spite for fellow Republicans.
Palin would be a knock-out ticket combo supporting McCain, and he could claim first rights as the Original Maverick POTUS with his brilliant complement of a leading woman VEEP. So long as she glorified the traditional VP role in Congress, I’d feel comfortable with her. I’m not sure how ready she is should a tragedy place her into the Oval Office.
Of course, Fred’s my choice. He’d be the very best ever. He’d handle so many fronts magnificently; he has no failing weakness as our strong VP, AG, or Sec./State.
And Romney would stand his ground when confronted by adversaries, polite as ever but no wimp on principles facing the likes of Putin, etc. McCain could have the politely distant relationship with Romney VP that Washington had with Adams if the personality lifestyle thing is really chafing. A POW survivor can endure the squeaky likes of Romney, though having survived torture already, may well choose to never subjugate himself again. Pride aside, it always helps to have a designated driver!

Everybody slow down. Obama is the nominee for no other reason then turnout. If the big “O” turns into the big Zero then all his youthful supporters stay home and the Party bleeds African-American support in November. The Democrats are forced to go with the horse that “brung Ya.” Obama will not put Hillary on the ticket because she would work throughout his adminstrations to undermine him. It would be the sort of constant covert war between President and Vice President not seen since the early days of the Republic.
I expect the full 1968 treatment in the streets but don’t count on the John Edwards media to cover much of it. The MSM is part of the Democratic Party’s ruling elite and they will not show anything that reflects badly on Denver or the Democratic Party.

True enough about (most of) the media. “Rocky” music as the spunky white underdog makes the comeback…
But what kind of national campaign could she put together between conv and November? Clinton campaign prowess is overesteemed. She’d never have time to unite the party and put together a viable campaign, even with total media support. But she wouldn’t even get total support. Lots of bitterness would be aired on the alphabet networks.

I think Obama’s more beatable than Hillary at this point, so I’m happy for him to remain their nominee. It’s just fun to have a ton of discord and chaos to further weaken his position in the meantime. It would also be nice if Hillary’s disgruntled supporters get disillusioned enough to stay home in November or vote for McCain in protest. No unity in Denver!

Spanglemaker on August 20, 2008 at 2:45 PM
I don’t think any of this will change the eventual nomination although a lot of the super delegates are probably having serious second thoughts. There is probably not enough time left before the convention for this to develop into anything serious for Obama. Hillary would be a much harder candidate for McCain to defeat so this is good news for the republicans.
