McCotter: Stop Pelosi Now!

posted at 8:00 pm on August 20, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Rep. Thaddeus McCotter has a message for Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the House Democratic caucus, and he wanted it delivered at Hot Air.  The chair of the Republican House Policy Committee says that Americans haven’t been fooled by Pelosi’s ploys to mimic support for drilling, and the outspoken Republican calls for a rational energy policy — now.

Demand Maximum American Energy – Now!

Leaving by example, Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi jetted off on her summer vacation under the assumption energy squeezed Americans would throng to buy her book, Know Your Power.

But Americans weren’t buying it – literally.

Economically maimed by the pain at the pump, citizens demanded vacationing Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats’ “Don’t Care” Congress get back to work and pass an “all of the above” energy bill to lower gas prices.

Unmoved by these working families’ sufferings, Speaker Pelosi conjured up another so-called “energy” proposal – one that is already acclaimed by none other than the anti-energy zealots at the Sierra Club. Yes, this is the same Sierra Club that pronounced: “We’re better off without cheap gas.”

Unfortunately, the Sierra Club’s collective “we” included us.

Not surprisingly, then, the Speaker’s latest lethargy proposal apes other energy schemes she’s brought to the House floor without amendment and under a super-majority vote requirement. Desperate to guarantee these bills’ defeats and blame Republicans, the Speaker orchestrated the nauseating spectacle of “Don’t Care” Democrats, who a few months ago wouldn’t vote to drill a tooth, now hugging derricks instead of trees.

This time, though, with a month of vacation under her Beltway, Pelosi’s ploy has a new wrinkle. In the media she is floating specious reasons why Republicans will vote against her radical cornucopia of energy insecurity.

What she still fails to grasp, as with all her energy scams, is that the public will not be misled.

Americans understand House Republicans’ bi-partisan “all of the above” energy plan provides maximum American energy and, so doing, ensures lower gas prices and energy security.

So let us save the Speaker’s breath, which she can use to inflate Senator Obama’s tires. House Republicans will vote to stop Pelosi’s ploy, because her latest anti-energy proposal will not include “all of the above”:

  1. Maximum American energy production;

  2. Common sense conservation;

  3. Free market alternative energy innovations; and, thus,

  4. A responsible transition to American energy security and independence.

The only real question about the “Don’t Care” Democrat Congress’s proposal is this:

When Pelosi’s ploy thumps into the dust bin of hypocrisy, will she and her Democrat majority’s “Most Hated Congress in History” finally stop saving the planet and start sparing working families’ wallets?

Or will the “Don’t Care” Democrats’ author (nee Speaker) start inking her book’s sequel – Know Your Abuse of Power?

Regardless, there is one thing you can count on. Working families and House Republicans will continue to demand maximum American energy!

“maximum American energy”? This sounds like it’s a catch phrase from a cheesy twenty year old tv show.

Seriously, this post was long on sound bites and short on anything approaching substance.

Careful Thad, Pelosi might butterfly-kiss you to death.

There’s a couple of words there that liberals don’t understand…like ‘Common Sense’ and ‘Responsible’ and ‘Free Market’

Hell, he might as well be speaking North Korean…Chinese….Russian??

Spicy…very spicy.

Is there a link to exactly what the Republican plan is – details and expected results included? Would like to do a side-by-side comparison so people don’t get caught up in the verbal vollies, but rather are forced to see who really stands for what.

Great work, Thad.

Alternate energy proposal: Hook something up to Pelosi’s eyes. I’m sure all that blinking could be used to generate enough power to keep the microphones on in the House.

Califemme on August 20, 2008 at 8:39 PM

Nancy Pelosi is getting the full shock of realism. The working class is sick of these political games at the expense of their pocket books. Energy independence is achievable only if Pelosi and her don’t care Party stop pandering to the environmental whack-o’s and Sierra Clubbers. This is a winning issue for Republicans if they refuse to back down and compromise with another watered-down bill that puts the legislation into the hands of the lawyers that will tie up progress.

Mr. McCotter’s message will be welcomed by those who see the obstruction that has kept this nation from its energy independence for the better part of thirty years.

Know your power!

The American voter has the wisdom of the most powerful women

So,Nancy enjoys jettin off to her vacation destination, while
the average American Joe,has to painfully tell his family

home while Nancy enjoys a glass of wine under the could careless and carefree moon!

With a dirty House,”IT MAY JUST TAKE A WOMEN” to clean up
all the Liberal (Spitzer,client#9;John Edwards,Spiritual

failure,and a 9% rating,

Hellow,Nancy “Know your abuse of Power” Pelosi!

Thank-you Honorable Representative Thaddeus McCotter for visiting us here on HotAir. You give us hope that there are some left to fight the good fight against the commie enviro-terrorists.
Find the traitor Repubs in your midst that would sell us out on this so we may put the pressure on them. We already know of 5 in the Senate that would rather deal for personal prestige than fight for what is right. No deals, drill here, drill now, onshore, offshore wherever oil is found.

The Sierra Club are extreme hypocrites. They whine that we consume too much energy yet they refuse to take a stand against illegal immigration, one of the largest forces driving our growing energy consumption. How many power plants do 20 million illegals require? How much gas do they consume?

DerKrieger on August 20, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Rep. McCotter:

The polls say that the GOP won’t win majorities in either house. So what do you have to lose by holding your ground and not giving into to Stretch? Keep fighting the good fight and let us have our own resources to use. You might just win some votes that you don’t have right now!

RushBaby on August 20, 2008 at 9:01 PM

Rep. McCotter,
It is really very simple. All you have to do is let the oil companies do what they do best; find crude oil, bring it to the surface, refine it into products, and bring those products to market. That’s it.

All you have to do is get the government out of the way. Those oil companies will make a profit, and you will tax that profit. We get product, you get money, everyone wins.

What’s wrong with that?

rockhauler on August 20, 2008 at 9:06 PM

franksalterego on August 20, 2008 at 9:28 PM

Rep. McCotter,

It’s great to see Republicans showing the courage of their convictions again.

This is a great message on energy, but I think a new Contract with America with additional issues could be a game-changer for this election. The democrats have opposed the interests of most Americans so aggressively in this congress that opportunities are waiting for Republicans like gold coins on the ground.

Maximum American Energy, School choice, Health care savings accounts, Immigration reform for American security with a talent-based fast lane for prospective new Americans are all potential winners for America.

Right_of_Attila on August 20, 2008 at 9:28 PM

I’ve said for a while now, McCotter is the coolest member of congress.

Topsecretk9 on August 20, 2008 at 9:29 PM

Well put, it appears the public is climbing out of their cocoons and opening their eyes to the web that is threatening to engulf them via the democratically controlled congress.

I agree with one of the other posters, it is time for a new contract WITH America, and earmarks should also be built into that contract along with term limits.

winemkr on August 20, 2008 at 9:43 PM

Thank you Rep. McCotter. You have a great message and a terrific sense of humor.

Rovin on August 20, 2008 at 8:40 PM

The last thing the environmentalists and democrats need is real cold before the election and up here in the northeast it doesn’t look good. It’s the middle of August and last night it here in southern MA it was 45 degrees and tonight isn’t looking much warmer with it at just about 55 degrees right now. It’s the coolest, wettest summer I can remember and it’s going to really hurt money wise this fall if it continues to be cold. I generally shutdown the furnace about April and this year I had it running until June. Heck I didn’t open my pool until mid July and now in mid August I have shut it down because the water is just to cold for comfort. A pool doesn’t stay warm with daytime in the upper 70s and nights in the mid 50s.

jmarcure on August 20, 2008 at 9:47 PM

Sweet.

nukemhill on August 20, 2008 at 9:49 PM

Our problem isn’t that we’re wrong about energy (as Republicans). Our problem is that we have let Democrats convince everyone that we plan to savage the planet in the process of acquiring resources. Hell, conservation is practically in our moniker so why does everyone think we are completely unconcerned about wildlife and the natural beauty of America? Do we need to make it more clear that we value energy policies that aren’t unnecessarily harmful to the environment? (which is basically everything on the table as far as I’m concerned)

I’m not being rhetorical folks, these are real questions. What can we do to make it clear that our energy ideas are not without conscience?

blankminde on August 20, 2008 at 9:50 PM

Finally! Something ballsy! Rep. McCotter, can you find 400 other people just like you to run for Congress across the country?

MB007 on August 20, 2008 at 9:54 PM

I stopped reading after the second iteration of “don’t care” democrats. The republicans had something good going on here, I hate to see them turning it into a “sound bite”, (and a “cheesy one” at that). Considering their “swing and miss” approach to politics these last “few years”, I’m “not surprised”.

I live in southeast CT and it was 50 when I left my house at 6:45 this morning. August. Dog days never came. With home heating oil over $5.00/gallon where I am, I’m very concerned about heating my house this winter. Thermostat at 60, extra blankets, etc… and using the wood stove more often is where we are at and I know we aren’t alone.

And we have Pelosi and company to thank for it. A pox on all of them. Way to go Mr. McCotter!

KrisinNE on August 21, 2008 at 9:13 AM

I like the “all-of-the-above” energy plan. The latest debate with my enviro-friend (green political lobbyist) involved my position being “pro-energy” just to make it clear I understand her position, which is the typical luddite green argument against everything which produces power. They pay lip service to windmills or solar panels until it comes time to place them somewhere, and then oppose them like any other source.
