Convention speakers named: Fred, Palin, Jindal, Romney, Huck, Pawlenty — and Rudy as keynote

CBS has the list. Rob Portman and Chris Cox aren’t there but everyone who’s everyone else is (including Michael Steele), so unless Maverick goes dark horse for his VP pick this schedule will change to move the nominee to Wednesday night. Rudy is the nominal keynoter — er, why? — but note the spot reserved for Jindal: Wednesday night, after the VP speaks. Has that ever happened before? The VP gets his/her big moment in the sun, and then promptly gets upstaged? Maybe Jindal’s the nominee and the schedulers are just being coy.

Interestingly, neither Romney nor Pawlenty is scheduled to speak in primetime while Rudy and Schwarzennegger are. Why stiff two up-and-comers in the party in favor of two guys going nowhere who already delivered major addresses four years ago?

Update: Ed e-mails to say he has a copy of the schedule and Jindal is slated to speak before the VP, not after. No wonder.

Update: Hold the phone. NBC says Jindal will follow the veep, too, but for the specific purpose of formally placing McCain’s name in nomination. Again, that seems like something that should be done before the VP goes on.

Update (Ed): Want to know who’s not on the list?  Governor Mark Sanford.  I’m just sayin’ ….

Update: Good catch, but there may be a non-VP explanation for that. Supposedly McCain and Sanford were on the outs for awhile, and Sanford didn’t do him any favors with his notorious CNN appearance last month.

Wednesday primetime (10-11pm Eastern Time)
Cindy McCain
Vice Presidential nominee
Gov. Bobby Jindal, R-La., will speak after the VP nominee

Very odd.

What I thought was odder was Palin, Huck and Rudy speaking around the same time.

Hmmmm….. weird. I am not going to specualte though.

I wish Arnold Shriver-Schwarzennegger would just go to the Dem side, where he really belongs.

He does more damage than good.

HebrewToYou on August 20, 2008 at 12:56 PM

I have mixed emotions about watching this convention. I’m looking forward to listening to everyone here with the exception of Huckabee. But at the same time its going to be painful listening to people I have respect for talk up someone I have very little respect for. Kind of like seeing a girl you like with another man. You still like her but the situation makes you a little sick to your stomache. As for Huckabee though, I’ll definitely be changing the channel before I have to look at that smug, crooked tooth slimy smile. How I wish he would just go away.

As soon as they announce his name for VP.

Zetterson on August 20, 2008 at 1:00 PM

While waiting to purchase my lunch, I was behind a lady who worked in the Democrat campaign office in town. She talked about how furious the office was to hear that Lieberman was going to speak at the GOP convention. If her attitude was any indication, the McCain campaign really got under some Democratic skin with that move.

Well played.

Slublog on August 20, 2008 at 1:00 PM

Hmm. Well, Romney has consistently said he doesn’t expect to be on the ticket this fall. Maybe he won’t be. But banishing him to some afternoon slot? McCain really doesn’t like him, I guess.

Frankly, I’m surprised–if Romney’s not VP, then given McCain’s well known dislike of him, why not just snub him entirely?

Vanceone on August 20, 2008 at 1:01 PM

stenwin77 on August 20, 2008 at 1:04 PM

Amid all of this chatter and noise, and the effective push back against Obama’s ever-changing efforts and hopes to get elected, Reuters/Zogby shows McCain up by 5 in a poll of likely voters.

We have breached the outer defenses…now it is time to pour through that gap.

The arrangements of speakers, the former GOP primary hopefuls included, can serve to bring a lot of dissatisfied GOP voters out, bring in a lot of new independents, and quite a few Dems, and solidify the larger strategy…defeat Obama soundly.

This one cannot, simply cannot be another 51-49 vote in November. It simply must be, by all means, a 65-35, or even a 60-40, landslide.

True. Though its not so much that I’m uninterested and don’t want to listen. coldwarrior on August 20, 2008 at 1:28 PM

Since Governors Romney, Pawlenty, and Palin are all scheduled speakers, does that mean that none of them are the VP nominee? Or would the VP nominee get to give two speeches?

Interesting that Palin, Huckabee, and Giuliani get primetime speeches, but Romney does not. In the primaries, Romney won more delegates than either Huckabee or Giuliani.

Is McCain going to wait until September 3 to announce his VP nominee?

Steve Z on August 20, 2008 at 1:28 PM

Rudy shouldn’t be VP–too much baggage, his pro-choice views negate the Saddleback bump, and his campaign floundered in the primaries. Save him for Attorney General or Homeland Security Secretary in a McCain Administration.

Steve Z on August 20, 2008 at 1:32 PM

I can understand scheduling Mitt and Huck for different nights. Would hate to see the convention marred by a bar brawl.

Mitt’s got the height advantage, but Huck has a long history of fighting dirty. And we know his kid’s packing heat.

sulla on August 20, 2008 at 1:35 PM

It is interesting that Romney is getting the shaft. He came in Second in the primaries, and Huck and Guiliani are getting primetime slots. They finished behind him. Of course, Huck played pattycake with McCain to derail Romney. Fred! isn’t getting a primetime slot either, but I think that’s because he genuinely doesn’t care–he’s done, and he’s not the future of the party anyway.

So of all the defeated candidates, Romney’s the only one who is getting the shaft in a major way. Unless he will be picked Veep–easier to move an afternoon speech?

Else Romney is getting the shaft somehow. Why?

Vanceone on August 20, 2008 at 1:36 PM

Perhaps afraid of being upstaged by the big crowds at the dem convention, are they just going with their big hitters to keep the crowd energized?

Typhonsentra on August 20, 2008 at 1:39 PM

Pawlenty is scheduled after the VP candidate would normally speak, so that slot can easily be “overtaken by events.” The schedule points to Pawlenty, I’d say.

RBMN on August 20, 2008 at 1:40 PM

The following are missing from the list: Cantor, Kasich, Portman, Sanford, Pataki

ConservativePartyNow on August 20, 2008 at 1:41 PM

BLITZER: Are there any significant economic differences between what the Bush administration has put forward over these many years as opposed to now what John McCain supports?

SANFORD: Um, yeah. For instance, take, you know, take, for instance, the issue of — I’m drawing a blank, and I hate it when I do that, particularly on television. Take, for instance the contrast on NAFTA. I mean, I think that the bigger issue is credibility in where one is coming from, are they consistent where they come from.

Sanford finally came up with an answer — McCain has opposed earmarks while President Bush hasn’t — but Blitzer twisted the knife a bit further, following up on Sanford’s initial mention of NAFTA. “He’s a huge supporter of free trade, John McCain, the Bush administration supports free trade. I don’t see a big difference.”

Is it just me, or is that question incoherent? No wonder Sanford was at a loss. Of course, hind sight being 20/20, and playing Tuesday morning quarterback, he should have asked Blitzer to restate the question.

But Sanford is still a winner, and would be an awesome VP selection. The best.

Steve Z on August 20, 2008 at 1:28 PM

No. He already said August 29th is the day. I do anticipate that this schedule will change, since I still think that McCain will pick a woman, either Sarah or Meg.

ConservativePartyNow on August 20, 2008 at 1:43 PM

Pataki

Damn. Ewwww another bona fide Republican who would be worse than Lieberman.

funky chicken on August 20, 2008 at 1:44 PM

But I just love how the GOP is keeping its convention in the news LOL poor Barry running around whining and stomping his little feeties, and McCain still running circles around him.

Good job fellas, now don’t get cocky. No Lieberman or Ridge for VP.

funky chicken on August 20, 2008 at 1:45 PM

I confess I don’t care anymore. If McCain is still holding a grudge against Mitt, and using the schedule to punish him…oh well. I think people would notice, and if Mitt – who has since his decision to leave the race has been the consummate team player – is given a back seat while the backstabbing weasel Huckabee is given prime time, I could seriously see Mitt going along if it means helping McCain. The folks who can’t stand Romney will be pacified, the folks who get a thrill up their leg whenever Huckabee is mentioned will take enormous comfort in the relative generosity shown their guy, and that segment of the GOP population that has been threatening to hijack the party if they’re not appeased will rejoin the tent (assuming McCain’s VP isn’t a travesty).

Consider it a replay of Solomon and the two mothers. Look at Mitt, look at Huck – who is willing to sacrifice their desires for the good of the party, and who is willing to cut the baby in two to satisfy their own selfish desire – I get my way or nobody goes away happy.

Especially since I imagine Huck won’t be able to resist twisting the knife at least once in his big prime-time opportunity, he’ll savor the battle…but lose the war four years from now.

sulla on August 20, 2008 at 1:46 PM

C’mon Allah. Rudy delivers a blockbuster speech, and you know it. That’s why he’s the keynote speaker. You want to fire up the crowd, and reach as many voters as possible, you go with your A team.

Waaaahhhh, it’s not fair because the dems can’t do as well? Or they could have done as well maybe with Slick Willie but the Obama folks won’t allow it? So the GOP should send out our B team so the dems won’t look so pathetic? C’mon.

Is the Republican Party smart enough to broadcast the GOP Convention via internet with contributions payable online during voters’ favorite speakers, or only channel through the elitist MSM defeatists?

Sure would be fun for the Fredheads to make a positive mark on the ‘08 POTUS platform. Likewise, Mittens would like some bragging rights as well.

Thank God Americans saw through Obama’s hole in time for some lifted spirits before the Conventions. HA! McCain overcame Obama’s lead DESPITE being ignored by the MSM.

Laura Ingraham and Sean Hannity will be at the Denver DNC Convention–will they podcast YouTube highlights for us? After all the Hillary shtick America has endured, her final POTUS gasp deserves full coverage, aka “closure”. If she doesn’t succeed with a POTUS coup this time around, she’d better accept life as the Senator from New York, no small feat.

Huckster ?? Why? I hope COPS re-runs are on at the time of his *speech*. Thank God for remote controls. OOffaahh..

This one cannot, simply cannot be another 51-49 vote in November. It simply must be, by all means, a 65-35, or even a 60-40, landslide.

Agreed. If they lose this election, big time, with no arguments of the election being stolen, maybe the Democratic Party will finally take a step back and look at its conduct and realize how un-American they have been these last few years. If they wanted to differentiate themselves, they should have done it on domestic policy, not flip flop on a war they voted for but now hope to lose. That behavior cannot be rewarded by the American people.

tommy, the Dems will never step back nor would they ever admit to it’s conduct.

So of all the defeated candidates, Romney’s the only one who is getting the shaft in a major way. Unless he will be picked Veep–easier to move an afternoon speech?

Ding, ding, ding. I think you win…

We have so many great republicans! Amazing line up indeed.

Huckabee on after Palin and before Rudy? Get out the crackers, there’s going to be a lot of cheese.

Some good speakers (like Jindal, Steele, Fred!, etc), many crappy ones. Who wants to hear Mel Martinez speak? He is SO unimpressive, boring, uninspiring… my God. Crist? Should we wear sunglasses so the light from his glowing skin doesn’t blind us? Arnold? Held out hope for him once, now he completely grates. At least several of them are on the last day, when things are winding down.

Carly has always been a good speaker, interested to hear Whitman; nice to have two prominent businesswomen give addresses. Unfortunately I will be in Disneyworld and will only get bits and pieces of this. =(
