Udall flips on drilling, Colorado reels

When last we saw Mark Udall, the Democratic Representative and Senate hopeful had skulked off a plane from DC after reneging on his promise to keep the House in session until Nancy Pelosi allowed a vote on drilling. When Pelosi called for the adjournment vote, Udall suddenly took a powder — and Pelosi won the adjournment by the single vote Udall failed to cast. The NRSC published this web video on Udall, capturing the furtive, over-the-shoulder look the AWOL Congressman gave a local TV videographer in the airport:

Now Politico reports that Udall has pledged to support drilling in the OCS, reversing himself on a key environmental position:

Udall, one of the House’s preeminent environmentalists and the Democratic nominee in a closely contested Colorado Senate race, came out in favor of a bipartisan, comprehensive energy plan that would permit additional offshore drilling — a striking departure from his past opposition to such measures.

He also aired a television ad featuring oil workers on a derrick, with Udall saying, “We’ve got to produce our own oil and gas here in our country and keep it here to power America’s economy. …

But Udall — whose Senate campaign has renamed his GOP opponent, Bob Schaffer, “Big Oil Bob” — is certainly one of the least likely proponents of offshore drilling.

His family name is closely tied with the protection of natural resources and conservation, consistent with the approach that he has advocated in the House. In Congress, Udall opposed offshore drilling on numerous occasions, and voted against expanding refinery capacity six times.

This is a measure of how well the Republicans have managed the oil crisis over the last few weeks, or perhaps more accurately, how badly Democrats have bungled it.  Udall himself became a poster boy for Democrats fleeing from the drilling question. The House OIl Party conducted by the GOP caucus has continually reminded everyone that the Democratic leadership has been AWOL all along.

Now Democrats want to try reversing their loss in standing by offering somewhat less demonization and at least a rhetorical paean to American production.  Udall kept painting his Republican opponent for the Senate, Bob Schaffer, as “Big Oil Bob”, right up to the point where even Democrats realize that the populist demonization of American oil producers has become passé.  Instead of real solutions, though, they insist that oil companies have to drill on unproductive leases first before they can look for more oil elsewhere, and that a windfall-profits tax will help investment by stripping producers of their capital for exploration and extraction.

Udall and the rest of the Democrats have finally awoken to the anger of an American public which finally realized that they have been fed populist pap for decades on oil production.  Now life-long obstructionists like Udall want to cover themselves by pretending to be more oil-friendly than Republicans while offering nothing in terms of actual increased domestic production.  Udall and his friends may think they can fool the American electorate one more time, but Americans understand the issue much more clearly than ever — which is why Udall and his caucus have reluctantly begun their retreat from retreat.

I wish that were true.

Forgone conclusion?

The answer is “yes”.

they are not retreating on this issue they are doing what pelosi told them to do a couple of weeks ago which was in essence to LIE about the drilling issue.

It’s hard to imagine that he is in office in Colorado. We came through Rifle a couple of days ago and could find no room at any Inn. There are derricks drilling madly for oil all over that part of the country. All of the motels are full to the gunnel’s. The place is a boom town.
These dems are such a joke! I think they really want our country to go down the tubes, otherwise why do they want us to send our $ to our enemies?

Bambi on August 19, 2008 at 9:11 AM

Based on this issue alone, I don’t see how the Dems can expect to maintain a majority yet so many “experts” are predicting they gain seats?

HOW?!?!?!?

Yakko77 on August 19, 2008 at 9:12 AM

The dems will allow limited drilling offshore, but not as much as is needed. The thing they’re really going for is to renew the moratorium on drilling.

thekingtut on August 19, 2008 at 9:12 AM

but Americans understand the issue much more clearly than ever

Not really. I read daily in the opinion section of my local rag of a newspaper, comments from people who continue to demonize the oil and gas industry. And I live in south Texas where oil and gas refining and exploration is KING.

They bite the hand that feeds them. But it really doesn’t surprise me, considering that we have a pretty large drop out rate and the average yearly income in our city is less than $35K. The ignorance surrounding this issue is truly astounding.

pullingmyhairout on August 19, 2008 at 9:14 AM

HOW?!?!?!?

I’m guessing you don’t watch the networks much?? And I’ll bet, with drilling the major issue these days, that the GOP is movin’ on up…

Shivas Irons on August 19, 2008 at 9:17 AM

It’s all a psych operation Yakko. The pimps, I mean the dems, have their bitches, I mean the MSM, feeding us a steady diet of doom and gloom, hoping to convince us that it’s a waste of time to vote. It’s similar to the operation they’re pulling on us pushing this global warming nonsense.

thekingtut on August 19, 2008 at 9:19 AM

The problem with the democratic position on environmentalism is that they’ve demonized the oil and gas industry for 40 years. Now that it is quite evident that more drilling is necessary, they look like buffoons for holding on to outdated, populist ideas. To flip and end the moratorium on drilling, would be in effect, admitting they were wrong all along – which is why they are still trying to pander to their loony base with “windfall profit tax” and “drill on your existing leases” nonsense.

They are like little children who stomp their feet when they know they’re wrong.

pullingmyhairout on August 19, 2008 at 9:20 AM

Republicans in the house have seized this issue, and rightfully so. Now if we can keep some idiots from doing brain dead things (such as the gang of ten), our guys can drive this issue towards making America energy independent during my life time…

A good friend of mine asked several of us at a luncheon yesterday this question “what have the Democrats done for the American people over the past several years”… Even the left leaning folks at the table stuttered while searching for a viable answer. Washington DC is broken, the proof is in the results (or lack thereof). Democrat politicians are on the same level as UN ambassadors, utterly and completely useless waste of money, time, and energy…

Shivas Irons on August 19, 2008 at 9:17 AM

If the stupid “gang of 10″ will get out of the way, this issue is a homerun for the GOP in November. If a bunch of GOP senators decide that now is the time to “come together,” then we’re screwed.

There should be no compromise with any democratic position that taxes the hell out of an industry already taxed to hell. There should be no compromise with any democratic position that refuses to open up ANWR and the OCS to drilling and exploration.

Hell, with what the school system is teaching these days, it is a toss up as to whether the students are better off if they graduate.

The donks will retreat to a position of ostensibly allowing drilling while regulating it further. Udall is just showing a flash of thigh in return for a date to the prom. We already know what his promises are worth. I don’t think Pelosi and crew can play catch up fast enough, although I expect some concilliatory gesture in the platform at Denver.

a capella on August 19, 2008 at 9:28 AM

It is just words. You don’t suddenly reverse a couple of decades of actions by making a slick commercials and suddenly saying you are for something that you have opposed all along. But to the great unwashed who only tune into politics 30 days before an election this will pass and he will once again, no doubt return to congress safe under the wing on Momma Pelosi and then continue to block any real effort. Afterall Nancy has already told them to do and say whatever it takes to keep her as the speaker of the house, er I meant to get reeclected.

Just A Grunt on August 19, 2008 at 9:35 AM

Classic Republican leadership – try to do what is best for the country, no matter how bad it hurts your chances of getting re-elected.

Classic Democrat leadership – Check the polling, moisten your finger, raise it in the air, figure out which way the wind is blowing, proceed from there.

Classic American response to the above — what’s in it for me?

Your guess is correct. I watch virtually no tv news. I get most of my news via blogs. I’ve come to the conclusion long ago that news from sources like HA are infinitely more accurate and reliable. If only most of the rest of the nation we so wise.

;)

Yakko77 on August 19, 2008 at 9:40 AM

Promises, promises. All Udall will offer is to vote for a bill which says that companies must drill on land where there is little or no oil. He’s hoping the gang of 10 bail him and his party-mates out on this one…

Think_b4_speaking on August 19, 2008 at 9:41 AM

I’m in Udall’s district and he really is an embarrassment. He’s never held an actual job in his life. He’s a rich kid whose district, the ultra-liberal Boulder, was cherry-picked for him. Before that, he rode his bike and hiked a lot and was the director of “Outward Bound” for a while. That’s it.

I really like Schafer but Colorado is so stuffed with Californians and illegals that we seem to be tilting Democrat.

Oh, illegals can’t vote? Oh. Why are they all standing in line at the polls on election day, voting, then?

bonnie_ on August 19, 2008 at 9:41 AM

He’s only taking San Fran Nan’s advice to get elected. I don’t believe him one bit.

Directly looking at KO or The Spittle Monster is not conducive to a happy life… and junk.

Doesn’t matter if he’s flip flopped or not; the damage was done by his vote to adjourn Congress.

I question the timing.

Ed, it’s “awakened” not “awoken.”

but Colorado is so stuffed with Californians

I find it sadly amusing that CA Dems are fleeing the paradise they created in CA and yet don’t see the connection between the policies and politicians they supported and the havoc they created. Now that they have escape CA they continue to vote for the same insane policies in their new home. The WSJ had a story a few weeks ago about Montana turning blue due to new residents from the Left coast. The story reported how many locals were leaving the cities due to rising taxes. Liberals are like a swarm of locusts.

DerKrieger on August 19, 2008 at 10:10 AM

Same thing is happening in Virginia with a liberal invasion from Massachusetts and New York and a huge influx of legal and illegal immigrants.

Udall and his pal Ken Salazar have also prevented votes on allowing further development of oil shale within Colorado, which has some of the nation’s richest shale fields. They claim that extraction of oil from shale is harmful to the environment.

rockmom on August 19, 2008 at 10:21 AM

Folks, his “joining” the gang of ten, along with other Dems… is interesting…

Heres what is happening. On October 1, OCS and Shale prohibitions END! They have to get some kind of vote, and put those prohbitions back as an amendment to some bill.

Chances are they will try to put it in as an addition to a conference report on an Continuing resolution to keep the government going, because they have NOT done ANY of the Budget Bills.

Now, if they “compromise” they not only win polticly, and look like they are doing somthing… but they dont’ go into a Standoff with a Presidential Veto, backed by the vast majority of the American People…

Key is to short cirtuit the gang of ten, or the Dems win… stick to your guns Reps.

The republicans have their “winning issue” and it was handed to them on a platter. I wish that I had a bit more confidence that they won’t manage to screw it up.

Boy, how I wish that was true. I don’t think all the ear marks they vote for are good for the country. They are on the right side of this issue, but we still need to hold their feet to the fire on their spending addiction.

I’d disagree. The Republicans had years to enable additional energy resources and did exactly nothing. Now these assclowns are about to be booted out of Washington by a disgusted populace for something even worse, all in the name of “change.”

If the Congresscritters of the Republican Party had any principals at all, the GOP wouldn’t be in this mess. They spent years pandering to anyone in the quest to “expand the base” – and they’re still spending like drunken sailors (apologies to drunken sailors) and trying to fellate Illegal Alien Vote. It’s only out of sheer desperation that they’re sucking up to us now.

So what is the base to do? Much of the GOP base is too terrified of the thought of a Democrat-controlled congress to undertake a little bit of regime change on its own side. This has enables the GOP to slap them around in a manner more reminiscent of a “pimp / ho” relationship. “Oh, I’m sorry, did I earmark another Billion? Get your *#&%$ back to work and make me some money or it’s Democrats for you!”

Slimy politicians are only a symptom – the real problem in the GOP is a base too cowed to stand up for itself and busy cowering in the corner while its elected “representatives” run roughshod over their values. Want conservative practices in government? Then grow some balls or ovaries and don’t vote for or support RINOs. Yes, there will be some short-term pain – but it’s a small thing; not like they’re asking us to die for our country or anything.

Reporting in as a Republican-Californian who moved to Montana to become a Montanan… I didn’t read the WSJ story you have mentioned here, but I can report this bit of news based upon my 2 years of living here in Montana.

First off, any reports of Montana turning blue based on left coast Liberals moving here are completely false. Montana’s population has grown in the last (10) years a whopping 58,000 people, only half of which came by way of migration. Montana has a population of approximately 970,000 people. Migration to Montana is primarily due to college students coming here for various reasons; skiing, hiking, cost of education… Some Hollywood Liberal elitists have come here and bought up large ranches. These critters get the head lines and make it appear that Liberals are heading for the negative zero climate, when in fact they are few in numbers.

The real reason why Montana has turned purple for the moment is simply because Conrad Burns (and a host of past Republicans) got caught in corruption scandals, and Montanans won’t put up with that crap for a minute. Most people here consider themselves Americans rather than a member of a political party. If an elected official behaves badly, they get booted. Simple as that. Both of the current Democrat Senators are in hot water here due to one simple fact; they both are in DC representing the DNC rather than the people of Montana who are suffering big time due to living in a remote environment, and the rising costs of fuel-energy-food… Democrats will get the boot here in good time simply because they will fall out of favor due to their Liberal behavior and the need to follow party lines rather than following the will of the Montanans.

Migration to Montana is a non factor. It simply isn’t happening. 40 degrees below zero is not real attractive to the average Liberal currently living on the left coast.

Keemo on August 19, 2008 at 11:44 AM

Udall doesn’t keep his promise to vote against cloture which he made in a televised appearance only 24 hours earlier and NOW we are supposed to believe this snake with a familiar name?

We get the government we deserve, but I know Coloradans are smarter than this. Now Californians, that is a different story. ; ))

Angry Dumbo on August 19, 2008 at 12:36 PM

Even though I am a registered Democrat, the party leadership no longer reflects my values, not that the Republican Party leadership is anything to crow about either. I do hope that the Democrats continue to “drag their feet” over this issue as it may be the best chance the country has for the “party of inevitably” and “candidate of inevitably” to be unceremoniously derailed in November.

I find it hard to believe that mainstream America cannot see what the rest of already have; the Obamessiah is completely unqualified to be POTUS.

Wildcatter1980 on August 19, 2008 at 12:56 PM

Bambi

Not that hard to understand, a simple plan is in place here.

1) Californians ruin the Californian economy, meaning they have to move as they can’t afford to live there, and can’t find jobs.

2) They move to Colorado (Front Range area in general) and start voting the same stupid policies in.

Which is why we now have 1 Conservative Republican Senator, and 1 Liberal Democrat Senator. Basically Colorado is a wash on any vote in the Senate.

So Udall doesn’t surprise me, he is Boulder’s representative, and he represents those liberal nutjobs to the best of his (or anyone’s) ability. He’s the “Front Range” representative, and that’s where the Californians like to move to. Vail, Aspen, Boulder, Breckenridge…

You may think he’s a crazy liberal; but he is representing his constituency pretty well.
