Just for the record, I hate that sh!t. If people are too stupid to understand sarcasm when they see it, I see that as their problem, not mine. I refuse to use emoticons or those cutesy little markers. Somehow or another, writers got their pints across up until now without them.

I work for a health care company whose CEO is a born again Christian. We have the sign of the fish on our bags. I don’t know if people know what I mean, but it is a sign that Christians used to make to find one another. One Christian would make one part of the fish by drawing in the dirt, another would finish it..it was meant to be a signal for believers to find one another. Maverick was spending the week in Constantinople and was told this story about seeing a cross in the sky. He made the story his own.

This only solves a piece of the mystery, but it's a key piece. It doesn't necessarily rule out the possibility that McCain or his biographer, Mark Salter, picked up the tale that this happened to Solzhenitsyn elsewhere and embellished it for their own purposes.

Last paragraph

Anyway, this settles two aspects of this tale: This never happened to Solzhenitsyn, and there's no way McCain could have picked it up from his works.
