TPM: Er, Solzhenitsyn never wrote about that cross story that McCain supposedly plagiarized

But he may have once told the story to a group of Christian leaders. Which goes to show, I guess, that just because an author hasn’t recorded something in writing before mentioning it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

[I]t turns out that this episode probably never happened to Solzhenitsyn at all, and according to a Solzhenitsyn biographer it appears nowhere in his published writing. Columbia University professor Michael Scammell, the author of Solzhenitsyn: A Biography, says the episode “never happened,” and didn’t appear in Solzhenitsyn’s book, Gulag Archipelago, either.

This only solves a piece of the mystery, but it’s a key piece. It doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility that McCain or his biographer, Mark Salter, picked up the tale that this happened to Solzhenitsyn elsewhere and embellished it for their own purposes.

But it takes one well-trafficked theory off the table: That McCain, a fan of Solzhenitsyn, picked it up straight from his works. More broadly, it also skewers once and for all the cherished right-wing falsehood that this happened to Solzhenitsyn at all.

So, new theory: McCain’s still a liar and a plagiarist (of course), but instead of plagiarizing Solzhenitsyn’s book he’s plagiarizing an apocryphal anecdote about Solzhenitsyn invented by Billy Graham to Christianize the fight against communism. Sounds like a plan, and I really like the consolation prize/moral victory spin of having debunked a treasured wingnut myth that most of us have never actually heard of. If someone pokes a hole in this version, it’ll shift to McCain being a liar and a plagiarist who stole the story from whichever POW it actually happened to (Orson Swindle, maybe?) or having pulled it out of a history of World War II, etc etc. Doesn’t matter how the variables change so long as the constant of McCain being a liar and a plagiarist holds. And now that I’ve done my part to aid the left’s noble cause of focusing media attention on Maverick’s POW experience and Christian belief, I direct you to Tom Maguire, who’s devoted two posts today — replete with neologism — to torturing the most stalwart true believer of ‘em all. And no, I’m not being cute there. This is bona fide torture, at least to the same extent that fake blood is. For shame, Maguire.

Well, I know McShamnesty was out of the ‘cone of silence’ for a fact.

Is it absolutely impossible that this happened more than once?

I would say a cross has been made in the sand with a stick several billion times, why not these two times?

EJDolbow on August 19, 2008 at 6:53 PM

If Solzy did it, so what? It’s not like he invented it.
In the Church’s beginning under brutal persecution, their were many times when they would use secret signs in the dirt to recognize each other.

I can only encourage the nutroots netroots in this important crusade.

Because you know North Vietnam which was a French colony for a 150 years, and 15 years before, the commies got rid of all the Christians. Because you can only “speak truth to power” if there are no repercussions.

mred on August 19, 2008 at 6:58 PM

All this from the same folks that freaked at the slightest mention that John Kerry was embelishing his Vietnam creds?

conservativecaveman on August 19, 2008 at 6:59 PM

So the nutroots are now attempting to claim that just because Solzhenitsyn didn’t write the story down in his life doesn’t mean it didn’t. All while they attempt to make the point that because McCain didn’t write something down for 20 years, means it didn’t happen.

Yup. And remember is all started with St. Andrew and his

I have one simple question: when was the first time that McCain told this story?

Once that simple question was answered with 2 eyewitness (Orson Swindle and Bud Day) – Day describing the sandal in the sand- at the time?

So the ad imagery with the stick is wrong, according to Day. And no Christmas dating.

DU is working on Plan B

Demetrius and the Gladiators (1954) & the Cross in the Dirt.

This is the sequel to “The Robe” (1953).

Victor Mature is Demetrius, a freed Christian slave re-captured and put into gladiator training. In one scene, Ernest Borgnine, playing a slave serving food to the gladiators, draws a cross in the dust (or whatever) on the table. He then makes brief eye contact with Demetrius and wipes it away.

That is one of the few things about that movie, which I haven’t seen in 20+ years, but it was the first thing I said to my lovely ChicaAzul when McSame told that story.

Hopefully Borgnine washed his hands before serving the food and drawing the cross in the dirt….

rw on August 19, 2008 at 7:09 PM

Yes! The goalposts have indeed been moved.
Andrew and the Kossacks have once again put their heads together, and declared that according to Bush’s guidelines, McCain was never tortured at all.

Digg it! Make posters about it! This is going to be the thing to…bring down Bush, maybe? I don’t know. But it’s big!

MayBee on August 19, 2008 at 7:09 PM

The lefties are going to attack anything that is said that is positive from McCain as being lies. Any advantage he has over Obama is because McCain cheats. Without racism and class envy promoting hate, they cannot exist. This is going to get deep into the gutter. Get used to it. It is who they are.

I hear McCain also broke his own bones and smashed out his own teeth just to gain favor with the NVA.

The bayonet wound he received after crashing? Self inflicted.

Even so, such trauma can’t hold a candle to what Baracky suffered in his quest to find arugula in Iowa.

Bishop on August 19, 2008 at 7:24 PM

I didn’t put the Kos link on their because I approve of it. I linked it to show how the goalposts are moving.

I just Matt Yglesies’s blog — he says this episode just illustrates the sad state of affairs of American literacy that people haven’t read Gulag Archipelago, including McCain -since it took so long to find Solzhenitsyn didn’t write such a thing to be plagiarized.

Does anyone recall MY’s blog post correcting the record since he’s a master of American literacy?

Topsecretk9 on August 19, 2008 at 7:27 PM

I’ve been hit with the same thing, Maybee, just take it in stride and move on.

Bishop on August 19, 2008 at 7:27 PM

I apologize for cross-posting. FoxNews will be showing a one hour documentary on Sen. John McCain tonight at 700 CST. Interviews with Sen. John McCain’s colleagues, friends and critics explore his character and conduct.

They had one on the Lightworker last night but 15 minutes was about all I could watch.

I would recommend that our token McCain haters try to watch it and see if has any impact upon your hatred.

carbon_footprint on August 19, 2008 at 7:28 PM

Look, this was as safe of a lie as anyone could tell. No one reads Solzhenitsyn except a few liberal professor types. It’s like when people quote Democracy in America, they’re familiar with the cliff’s notes version, but haven’t actually read it. (For the record, I’m still plowing through it after a year. I read it now and then. I’m on volume one, about half way through. It is the most long winded example I’ve read thus far.)

So the press would naturally swallow the story hook line and sinker. Especially about McCain. The sad part is, you don’t have to lie about McCain, as I’ve pointed out many times, he has enough real reasons to vote against him in his history that a lie is not required.

Of course, it’s easier to lie than to study the record of McCain.

I could see how no one would necessarily remember the relevant parts that were supposed to be in “GA”, it was a dull read IMHO.

Bishop on August 19, 2008 at 7:32 PM

Re. The Robe (1953; or maybe the 1954 sequel Demetrius and the Gladiators?) they don’t have that correct either. It was a maid drawing a Jesus fish in face powder, although I can’t recall to whom she was making the secret sign.

andycanuck on August 19, 2008 at 7:50 PM

Does Greg Sargent read his own writing?

Paragraph 3

This only solves a piece of the mystery, but it’s a key piece. It doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility that McCain or his biographer, Mark Salter, picked up the tale that this happened to Solzhenitsyn elsewhere and embellished it for their own purposes.

Last paragraph

Anyway, this settles two aspects of this tale: This never happened to Solzhenitsyn, and there’s no way McCain could have picked it up from his works.

gabriel sutherland on August 19, 2008 at 7:54 PM

It was Constantine not Solzhenitsyn.

Maverick was spending the week in Constantinople and was told this story about seeing a cross in the sky. He made the story his own.

McCain cheated by duping his Hanoi Hilton guard into making a cross on the floor by telling the guard he’d play tic-tac-toe with him.

And nine other times McCain cheated. I researched this while taking a nap on the Washington Metro.

I work for a health care company whose CEO is a born again Christian. We have the sign of the fish on our bags. I don’t know if people know what I mean, but it is a sign that Christians used to make to find one another. One Christian would make one part of the fish by drawing in the dirt, another would finish it..it was meant to be a signal for believers to find one another. This tradition of making signs and symbols in dirt is not unknown in Christianity and dates back to its earliest days as a persecuted minority.
