LAT/Bloomberg bombshell: Obama only up 2

posted at 5:50 pm on August 19, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

According to the latest Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll, Barack Obama has lost ten points in the last two months since clinching the nomination.  In the second major poll to show a catastrophic drop in that period, the LAT survey shows registered voters registering only a 2-point lead for Obama over John McCain in a head-to-head contest, and only one point when Ralph Nader and Bob Barr get considered.  McCain has overcome the enthusiasm gap and has defined the central issue as experience and leadership:

When last we had a L.A. Times/Bloomberg poll to peruse, the result that stood out (aside from Barack Obama’s 12-percentage point lead over John McCain in a head-to-head matchup) was what we termed the “passion gap” that favored the Democrat back in the June survey.

The new, just-released poll not only shows the race between the two dramatically tightening — into a virtual dead heat, with Obama leading in the head-to-head by only 2 percentage points — but it also identifies a distinct McCain asset: a huge advantage on the question of experience.

The survey of almost 1,250 registered voters showed that the vast majority have no doubt McCain is qualified for the White House. Asked if the Republican had the right experience to be president, 80% said yes (with only 14% saying no).

By contrast, close to a majority — 48% — said Obama lacks the experience for the job (with 44% saying yes).

Today, Obama tried talking patriotism with the VFW and attacking McCain, but he didn’t convince too many of the attendees.  Small wonder; only 55% of registered voters think of Obama as “strongly patriotic”, as compared to 89% for McCain, and 35% question Obama’s patriotism.  That’s actually unfair; Obama may be a hard-Left ideologue as shown by his track record and associations, but nothing he’s personally done has indicated a lack of love for his country.  Perhaps that impression comes from statements like this, though:

“America is …, uh, is no longer, uh … what it could be, what it once was. And I say to myself, I don’t want that future for my children.”

Mostly, though, McCain has made experience and leadership the main focus of the campaign. He has turned the contest into a referendum on Obama’s resume, and the result has been a collapse in support.  Even while Obama raises tons of money, McCain has raised even more questions about Obama’s judgment, grasp of the issues, and track record.  Meanwhile, Obama keeps reversing himself on all of the qualities he claims made experience irrelevant; he’s reneged on public financing, started raising money from PACs and lobbyists, and when an international crisis unexpectedly emerged, Obama wouldn’t come out of seclusion to answer questions from the media about it.

Democrats have to wonder what it will take to elect Obama.  The more money they raise, the worse he seems to perform.  The more he’s seen, the more ammunition he provides for Republicans.  After winning the nomination, Obama should have shored up support and extended his lead from the post-Hillary bounce.  Instead, he’s flailing in the water, and looks in over his head.

And this poll surveyed registered voters.  Imagine what the numbers look like for likely voters.

Update: Jammie Wearing Fool has a laugh at the credit given McCain for his success:

Daily onslaught of attacks? I guess they’ll ignore the daily onslaught of attacks on McCain from 98% of the media and blogosphere. … That’s called exposing Obama’s record, or lack thereof.

I guess they missed Obama’s continual smearing of McCain and the GOP as racists ….

The LAT poll has Obambi up by 2? Must mean McCain is actually up by about 5 or 6.

In June this same poll had Obama up by 12

No, it’s not unfair. Obama has a track record of putting down America. Not to mention his wife who says she’s never been proud of the downright mean America, or his pastor of 20 years who says G.D. America. Heck, you could just point to Obama befriending a confessed terrorist bomber and stop there.

I think Obama (and most leftists) love American Real Estate…but they hate American spirit, culture, values, economics, the constitution, etc. What they really love is the opportunity to turn this horrible country into a Marxist utopia — with the elite given special privileges, of course.

Obama only leads by 2% among registered voters — a group he tends to do better with — when he previously lead by double digits. That in addition to the fact Obama tends to do better in polls than he does on election day. Yeah, McCain’s the loser here.

amerpundit on August 19, 2008 at 6:05 PM

I wonder, did it cost McCain fifty million bucks to attend Saddleback?

Bishop on August 19, 2008 at 6:05 PM

And it’s a national poll. Presumably those polled from high population density, high percentage democrat regions always give an advantage to the democrat in national polls.

The state by state polls of likely voters have to be terrible for Obama.

JiangxiDad on August 19, 2008 at 6:10 PM

Obama has the stink of a loser, now.

It is going to get more difficult for him to raise money as this smell becomes more pronounced. People do not want to buy the guy who loses the election. They want to buy the guy who is going to win. The Smart Money is going to start going to McCain.

Of course, Obama will always have Soros’ Stupid Money. Having that jackass flush another couple of hundred million dollars down the sewer suits me just fine.

gridlock2 on August 19, 2008 at 6:10 PM

Alphie, exactly what about Obama do you like? His tax proposals, healthcare, energy plans? I could care less that you obviuosly despise McCain, but what is there to like about Obama?

Admiral Pay Grade’s going in the wrong direction. You guys should let him speak without a teleprompter more. That should fix it.

Chuck Schick on August 19, 2008 at 6:10 PM

You know, the fact that Obama being “Only” ahead by 2 points is characterized as “Catastrophic” is pretty telling. Out of probably nearly 100 national tracking polls taken since he clinched the nomination and was endorsed by Clinton he was only behind in one poll ever and that was only because they removed some of his supporters from their larger polling because they were registered but not “Likely”.

Yeah you could argue he was expected to win in a blowout but I find it weird that even with all the close calls he still consistently tracks ahead of McCain according to all polling agencies even if it’s only by a little. It’s been nearly two months now.

Typhonsentra on August 19, 2008 at 6:10 PM

alphie on August 19, 2008 at 5:56 PM

The poll was conducted from last Friday to Monday, so McCain’s debate performance on Saturday night only influenced the final two days of polling.

Basically, since it is widely agreed that Senator McCain outperformed Obama on Saturday night, this poll represents the best case scenario for Obama.

jeff_from_mpls on August 19, 2008 at 6:17 PM

You know, the fact that Obama being “Only” ahead by 2 points is characterized as “Catastrophic” is pretty telling.

It is when you spend tens of millions per month and you’re numbers keep dropping, even though everyone and I mean everyone was saying that this was a democrat year. The DFL picked their man to blow the GOP out of the water and it ain’t happening, yeah I’d say that catastrophic.

alphie on August 19, 2008 at 5:56 PM

The Saddleback bounce, if there is one, would not be in this poll.

But the Obamamessiah should be ahead by 10 or 15 points by now. The leftist media and their pollsters alwaays give the Dems and advantage in the way the polls are worded so it looks like your man Obama is in a world of trouble.

EJDolbow on August 19, 2008 at 6:27 PM

There hasn’t been enough time for the Saddleback appearance to affect the polls.

The poll’s match-up numbers are these: Obama, 45%; McCain 43%. By comparison, the June numbers were Obama, 49%; McCain, 37% (in each case, the margin of error is plus-or-minus 3 percentage points).

Typical MSM bovine fecal matter……….. McCain surges to tie, Obama is within the margin of error and he is still “Ahead in the Polls………. the Polls……… look at our Polls………..”

The reason Obama is not killing McCain is because the MSM has lost credibility, as it should, because of the internet being able to diffuse their propaganda. If there were no internet, the brainwashing by the MSM would have this naive, incompetent rookie in the White House.

Racist poll.

this isn’t a bombshell…this is like Clinton saying Lewinsky testimony was really bad just before it was released…If he were down it would be different

tomas on August 19, 2008 at 8:23 PM

If I remember correctly, was not John Kerry way ahead of Bush in polls until election day ‘04? The exit polls even had Kerry winning the presidency.

How did those polls work out for Mr. Waffles?

Barack Obama…Citizen of the Curdled!

RushBaby on August 19, 2008 at 8:29 PM

And MB4, as I know what a fan you are of the silly RCP average, its got Barack Obama 264, John McCain 274. I believe that is a first on RCP.

Chuck Schick on August 19, 2008 at 8:55 PM

According to RCP McCain has a lead in the Electoral College. Note the numbers for Indiana, they have McCain with a slim lead. I could be wrong {happens everyday} but I think McCain will do better than that here. Dole beat Clinton here in Indiana. Bush 1 carried this state in 1992. Bush beat Kerry by over 20. The blue dogs did do well here in 2006, but even they did not support Obama in the primaries. Hillary won here, just like she did in Kentucky. {cue alphie to call hoosiers racists}.

If Obama picks Bayh, that might help. In fact the idea that he might do that could account for the better than usual numbers for the Democrats here.

I sometimes wonder if MB4 isn’t The Toilet Bug(aka Alphie) just experiencing one of his/her more lucid moments…

BigWyo on August 19, 2008 at 9:09 PM

For the record on RCP, I think taking the last 6 major polls, adding them and dividing them by 6 is so ridiculously unscientific that it shouldnt even have the word “scientific” after it. No regression used with multiple takings of the same poll, no weighting for sampling sizes or R/D proportions, no correction for RVs vs LVs, and most of all, no historic comparisons of past polls vs election outcomes. Just divide by the number 6!

Chuck Schick on August 19, 2008 at 9:11 PM

Crap! Crap crap crap!

Obama wasn’t supposed to fall apart until *after* the convention!

Chuck:

I have kind of wondered the same thing. I tend to pick a couple of polls and stick with them. That way at least I get trends. Maybe.

Terrye on August 19, 2008 at 9:30 PM

alphie is definitely the most successful troll on HotAir, for reasons I can’t divine.

I think alphie is a trollbot designed to increase the post count.

That being said, I’m not even going to bother reading threads anymore, they all break down into a “reply to alphie” thread. It’s getting old.

Speaking of lucid moments, you should get what gray matter you may have out of a preoccupation with toilets long enough to have one sometime.

Reuters/Zogby today has McCain up by 5%.
