I add the following addendum:

There is a chasm between Yikety Yak the Political Hack who used a cheap fake to implement State benefits for gay couples in Alaska, and the honest, brilliant, straight talking Ronald Reagan and his British twin, Margaret Thatcher

Reagan played it straight.

Yikety Yaj was either simple (and misunderstood the Constitutional right to sign a Bill if she supported that Bill and then have the Courts properly and publically decide if it is Constitutional)

or a simple puppet (who could be manipulated by a devious Attorney General to believe she could not sign a Bill if he privately had determined that it would not pass Constitutional muster, thus avoiding the proper review of the Bill by the Courts)

or devious (pretending she could not sign the Bill because of legalities (untrue) so she could get the new benefits installed and pretend she was helpless to act otherwise)

As I said, Reagan, and Thatcher were straight shooters. Brave. Intelligent. Giants. The Alaska governor is a midget

BTW, you can throw in Thatcher’s name for cover all you want, but you’re not fooling anybody.

Mr. Wednesday Night on August 20, 2008 at 7:52 PM

Not fooling anybody about what?

About being old enought to vote for Reagan, and fan enough to give the Reagan re election campaign my largest political donation. Hooked on Thatcher, I never missed an interview. When Reagan died, I wrote a poem which I forwarded to Thatcher's web site. I was honored to receive a reply that Mrs Thatcher was a poetry fan and the poem would be passed to her. I cherish the thought that she might have read my ode to the humble President whom she matched in stature.

When Reagan died I was surprised to see the outpouring of affection for the old man who had been President so long ago. People held signs and banners as his funeral procession passed.

The long line of people waiting to circle the coffin on the bier in the Rotunda brought tears. The Reagan spirit was not dead. I thought of a sleeping Giant - the spirited Americans who shared Reagan's vision. The funeral lines proved the Giant was alive and well. Here is my poem:

Today I Saw a Giant

(written by entagor June 10, 2004 on viewing the silent line of mourners circling the casket of the great, great patriot Ronald Reagan)

Today I saw a Giant wakened after years of sleep
He walked in circles round and round
Beneath a dome on hallowed ground
Which sheltered on a simple bier
A symbol both of yesteryear
and eagles challenging the skies.
So groaned the Giant tears and sighs
as soldiers watched with silent eyes
their treasured guard to keep.

None so sweet as sparrow's eyes
a tiny creature one day dies
and lids now closed
in soft repose
the stars accept their babe.

One symbol on black velvet laid
One star, one stripe
One soldier's blade
The Giant cannot cross the lines
to touch the lips that held the smile
and so he walks the weary mile
and tears become his trade.

One great Giant now awake
The sparrow sleeps his work is done
The Dear Lord gathers back His son
as horses call from pasture far
the hills await the rising star.
So one great Giant circles round
until his soul at last has found
one eagle feather on the ground
the sun again will rise.

-----------
My God I miss those two so much!

Pawlenty...........Why do we need another Dan Quail? Pawlenty seems a little too "milk toast" for me. Also, what makes him presidential material?

The 2 great American political parties have turned to $hit.

I guess nobody worth a damn is willing to run for POTUS. Too much media scrutany I guess. I know there are quality leaders out there, and I for one am ready for some quality candidates instead of the two shmucks we got.

Here is a useful link on Palin, a Charlie Rose interview with Fov Palin and Gov Napolitano of Arizona

Interestingly, if I listen to Palin, without watching her, I hear Michigan Governor Granholm. She has the same perky too intimate voice, with a bit of the Peggy Noonan squeak and gush. Speaks too fast rat-a-tat-tat. Tiresome like being nagged by a speed addict

Could that be why I can't stand her? Nails on the blackboard

Gov Napolitano, without the visuals, has a macho lady contralto with Sunday morning talk show pompousness.

Palin strains my patience. I hate the tiny intimate wraps on sentences which is a Granhom trait. She also does the hanging question tone at the end of sentences.

Between the two it was hard to listen to this interview. Yikity yak yikety yak

I miss Thatcher, who was in the class of Reagan. I wanted to listen to her words

Poptech on August 20, 2008 at 8:18 AM

Thanks for the links on Pawlenty

The two P's (pawlenty and Palin) are my least desirable choices for VP

McCain is already the non conservative choice for Pres. Adding either of the two tiny Peas in a Pod to the Big Pea McCain ticket is more of the same

The strange surge towards non conservative VP choice is a shove, not a surge. Palin pulled a fast one on granting same sex couples State Benefits. Pawlenty is Lindsey Graham with more batteries

I find Lieberman more desirable than either of the lesser Peas and Lieberman is a flaming lib.

If I am going to vote for a social safety net politician, I would rather have it up front and straight from Lieberman with the added certainty that he is capable of making strong decisions about national security

Lieberman is not a slickster and he does not lie to himself about what he is either

I like the idea of Sarah Palin for VP.

Lieberman makes no sense, he has a ACU rating is only 16 lifetime. Besides, I wouldn't be able to vote for the top of the ticket, since I never ever vote for a Democrat.

told ya so… Lieberman… he wraps up the election in one move. checkmate. 6% or 7% from that one move. name me a Republican that will vote Obama just because McCain chose Lieberman? no I don’t see it. but democrats that will vote for the Maverick, because he reached across the isle and made history by asking a democrat to be on the ticket with him… ummm I think so. I could be wrong though…

McCain won't get my vote if he picks Joe Lieberman. Why in this world would I want to put a total liberal who was Al Gore's first pick to be President after himself in the 2nd highest office with a war on? He caucuses with democrats. To me there is not much difference between a leftist with an (I) or (R) after his name as a leftist with a (D).

Why in the name of heaven didn’t the conservatives make an issue of illegal immigration years ago and deal with this problem then?

Terrye on August 19, 2008 at 5:59 PM

We did.

We were promised employer enforcement, and border enforcement, if only we'd allow them to pass amnesty first. So we did. But funny thing... they didn't live up to their promises.

And now here we were, years later... and more promises of employer enforcement, and border enforcement, if only we'd allow them to pass "comprehensive reform", which looked/smelled/tasted like just another amnesty.

But we said no. They promised enforcement. And we were making them honor their original promises first.

And they yelled and screamed at us. Called us racists and bigots. So we informed our friends, who informed their friends, and suddenly switchboards in D.C. were overloaded with angry constituents.

They had forgotten who they serve. They still don't understand the jobs taken that used to belong to teenagers entering the workplace, the depressed salaries of tradesmen trying to support their families, the massive load on social services and healthcare, huge increases in violent crime, the changing of our very culture by aliens who didn't want to assimilate.

So they promised a fence, even funded it. "Now can we pass amnesty?" We held their feet to the fire, and they turned on us like a snake and bit us again. The funding dried up, the fence is not built, sanctuary cities continue.

And you say "we did nothing"?

How is it that truth disappears down the memory hole, and propaganda is spouted from people who claim to belong to our party?

McCain may be floating very bad choices so that if he picks just a bad choice some people, they know who they are, will say, “See what a good pick he made! Vote McCain!”

Do you think the strategy is to just annoy the stuffing out of everybody so they don't care who he picks? I am getting there.

[...] Watching the McCain campaign edge closer and closer toward the convention can be frustrating. For every step forward that we get, such as his modification of his domestic drilling agenda, we also are greeted by two shambling ‘maverick’ steps backward with stories like this. I don’t know if it means anything, but I just got a letter from John McCain, saying all sorts of nice things about me.

I sent him twenty-five bucks once, and haven't been left alone ever since. Sent me a picture of him and his wife. Just about every day the guy sends me something in the mail. My letter carrier has started to smirk, OK?

Maybe I'm his VP.

Or could be, if I'll just send him a check.
